Associations of socioeconomic status and healthy lifestyle with incident dementia and cognitive decline: two prospective cohort studies

Little is known about the complex associations of socioeconomic status (SES) and healthy lifestyle with cognitive dysfunction. Using data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) [2008-2020] and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) [2004-2018], SES was constructed by latent class analysis using education level, total household income and wealth. Overall healthy lifestyle was derived using information on never smoking, low to moderate alcohol consumption (drinks/day: (0, 1] for women and (0, 2] for men), top tertile of physical activity, and active social contact. A total of 12,437 and 6565 participants from the HRS and ELSA were included (40.8% and 46.0% men and mean age 69.3 years and 65.1 years, respectively). Compared with participants of high SES, those of low SES had higher risk of incident dementia (hazard ratio 3.17, 95% confidence interval 2.72-3.69 in the HRS; 1.43, 1.09-1.86 in the ELSA), and the proportions mediated by overall lifestyle were 10.4% (7.3%-14.6%) and 2.7% (0.5%-14.0%), respectively. Compared with participants of high SES and favorable lifestyle, those with low SES and unfavorable lifestyle had a higher risk of incident dementia (4.27, 3.40-5.38 in the HRS; 2.02, 1.25-3.27 in the ELSA) and accelerated rate of global cognitive decline (β=-0.058 SD/year; 95% CI:-0.073,-0.043 in the HRS; β=-0.049 SD/year; 95% CI:-0.063,-0.035 in the ELSA). Unhealthy lifestyle only mediated a small proportion of the socioeconomic inequality in dementia risk in both US and UK older adults. Risk Analysis of the Development of Sustainable Dongtan

Dongtan is set to be developed as a sustainable urban-rural integration, aiming to attract a wide range of commercial and leisure investments. The Shanghai Industrial Investment Corporation (SIIC), the largest international investment group owned by the Shanghai municipal government, is leading the Dongtan project in partnership with Arup. The project’s risks are categorized into eight major groups: (1) Force majeure, (2) people-related risks, (3) financial and economic risks, (4) political and country risks, (5) environmental risks, (6) completion-related risks, (7) design-related risks, and (8) technology risks. Among these, political risk is particularly notable for its high probability and significant impact. Effective project risk management is essential to foresee and address uncertainties that could jeopardize the project's objectives and timelines. Appropriate strategies must be implemented to manage and mitigate these risks.

The proton-proton ( ) fusion chain dominates the neutrino production in the Sun. The uncertainty of the predicted neutrino flux is at the sub-percent level, whereas that of the best measurement is (10%). In this study, for the first time, we measure solar neutrinos in the electron recoil energy range from 24 to 144 keV using the PandaX-4T commissioning data with 0.63 tonne year exposure. The neutrino flux is determined as , which is consistent with the Standard Solar Model and existing measurements, corresponding to an upper flux limit of at 90% C.L..

Neutrinos from core-collapse supernovae are essential for understanding neutrino physics and stellar evolution. Dual-phase xenon dark matter detectors can be used to track explosions of galactic supernovae by detecting neutrinos through coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scatterings. In this study, a variation of progenitor masses and explosion models are assumed to predict neutrino fluxes and spectra, which result in the number of expected neutrino events ranging from 6.6 to 13.7 at a distance of 10 kpc over a 10-s duration with negligible backgrounds at PandaX-4T. Two specialized triggering alarms for monitoring supernova burst neutrinos are built. The efficiency of detecting supernova explosions at various distances in the Milky Way is estimated. These alarms will be implemented in the real-time supernova monitoring system at PandaX-4T in the near future, which will provide supernova early warnings for the astronomical community.

Signal reconstruction through software processing is a crucial component of the background and signal models in the PandaX-4T experiment, which is a multi-tonne dark matter direct search experiment. The accuracy of signal reconstruction is influenced by various detector artifacts, including noise, dark count of photomultiplier, photoionization of impurities in the detector, and other relevant considerations. In this study, we presented a detailed description of a semi-data-driven approach designed to simulate a signal waveform. This work provides a reliable model for the efficiency and bias of the signal reconstruction in the data analysis of PandaX-4T. By comparing critical variables that relate to the temporal shape and hit pattern of the signals, we found good agreement between the simulation and data.

Exploring Household Food Waste Reduction for Carbon Footprint Mitigation: A Case Study in Shanghai, China.

With the steady growth of the global population and the accelerated urbanization process, the carbon footprint resulting from food waste has a significant impact on the environment and sustainable development. Considering Shanghai's significance as a major urban center in China and a global hub for economic and cultural activities, this study primarily aims to accurately estimate household food waste generation and calculate the carbon footprint related to edible food waste. It analyzes the factors influencing household food waste generation and reviews the anti-food waste-related policies at both the national and Shanghai regional levels. The study reveals that although the Shanghai municipal government attaches great importance to the issue of food waste, the current policies mainly focus on the catering industry, and there is still a need for further strengthening measures to address food waste at the household level. In Shanghai, the per capita daily food waste generation is 0.57 kg, with 43.42% being edible food waste, contributing to a per capita daily carbon footprint of 1.17 kgCO2eq. Employing the logistic regression analysis to scrutinize the characteristics of the respondents, it is ascertained that education level and annual household income significantly influence food waste generation. In addition, excessive food quantities and expiration dates lead to high-frequency food waste. The culmination of this study is the formulation of a series of pragmatic and impactful policy recommendations aimed at curbing the carbon footprint that stems from food waste.

Safety and immunogenicity of a modified COVID-19 mRNA vaccine, SW-BIC-213, as a heterologous booster in healthy adults: an open-labeled, two-centered and multi-arm randomised, phase 1 trial

We assessed the safety and immunogenicity of a core-shell structured lipopolyplex (LPP) based COVID-19 mRNA vaccine, SW-BIC-213, as a heterologous booster in healthy adults. We conducted an open-labeled, two-centered, and three-arm randomised phase 1 trial. Healthy adults, who had completed a two-dose of inactivated COVID-19 vaccine for more than six months, were enrolled and randomized to receive a booster dose of COVILO (inactivated vaccine) (n=20) or SW-BIC-213-25μg (n=20), or SW-BIC-213-45μg (n=20). The primary study endpoint was adverse events within 30 days post-boosting. The secondary endpoint wasthe titers of binding antibodies and neutralizing antibodies against the wild-type (WT) of SARS-CoV-2 as well as variants of concern in serum. The exploratory endpoint was the cellular immune responses. This trial was registered with http://www.chictr.org.cn (ChiCTR2200060355). Between Jun 6 and Jun 22, 2022, 60 participants were enrolled and randomized to receive a booster dose of SW-BIC-213 (25μg, n=20, or 45μg, n=20) or COVILO (n=20). The baseline demographic characteristics of the participants at enrollment were similar among the treatment groups. For the primary outcome, injection site pain and fever were more common in the SW-BIC-213 groups (25μg and 45μg). Grade 3 fever was reported in 25% (5/20) of participants in the SW-BIC-213-45μg group but was resolved within 48h after onset. No fatal events or adverse events leading to study discontinuation were observed. For secondary and exploratory outcomes, SW-BIC-213 elicited higher and longer humoral and cellular immune responses than that in the COVILO group. SW-BIC-213, a core-shell structured lipopolyplex (LPP) based mRNA vaccine, was safe, tolerable, and immunogenic as a heterologous booster in healthy Chinese adults. Dynamic zero-COVID strategy in controlling COVID-19 in Shanghai, China: A cost-effectiveness analysis

BackgroundThe sustainability and generalizability of China’s dynamic zero-COVID strategy on eliminating SARS-CoV-2 transmission has casted doubt globally, mainly because it has exacted high social and economic cost. This study aimed to estimate the disease burden during the first wave of Omicron in China and compared the cost-effectiveness of implementing a Real-world strategy (adjusted dynamic zero-COVID strategy) with two simulated strategies (routine and stricter dynamic zero-COVID strategy) to inform appropriate strategies for COVID-19 pandemic control. MethodsA dynamic state-transition simulation model was developed to compare the health and cost outcomes between different dynamic zero-COVID strategies. Omicron-related healthcare costs were estimated from the societal perspective. Epidemiological parameter values were derived from data of real-world or generated by model calibration; costs and effectiveness parameter values were informed either by local data or published literature. The primary outcomes were total social cost, disability adjusted life-years (DALYs) and net monetary benefit (NMB). Deterministic sensitivity analyses (DSA) and scenario analyses were performed to assess the model robustness. ResultsThe first wave of Omicron in Shanghai resulted in 47,646 DALYs lost and 415 billion RMB losses. At a willingness-to-pay threshold of 173,630 RMB (the GDP per capita of Shanghai in 2021) per DALY saved, the Real-world strategy was considered as the most cost-effective strategy due to its highest NMB (−407 billion). Results from DSA confirmed the robustness of our findings. ConclusionOur finding supported the Real-world strategy taken by the Shanghai Municipal Government between March 1 and May 21, 2022 to control the first wave of Omicron outbreak. Moreover, our results indicated that whether the Stricter dynamic zero-COVID strategy is worth implementing at the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak mainly depended on the infection rate of COVID-19 among primary contacts. Our analysis provides important evidence to inform policy makers to make appropriate decisions regarding COVID-19 pandemic management.

Caregiver Perceptions of Children's and Adolescents' Psychosocial Functioning During the Stringent COVID-19 Lockdown Restrictions in Shanghai: Cross-sectional Study.

The COVID-19 pandemic represents a global health crisis. The Shanghai municipal government in China implemented strict and comprehensive pandemic control strategies in the first half of 2022 to eliminate a wave of COVID-19 infection. The pandemic and the resulting government responses have led to abrupt changes to families' daily lives, including the mental health of children and adolescents. The aim of this paper is to examine the impact of COVID-19 exposure and the stringent lockdown measures on the daily life and mental health of children and adolescents and to provide suggestions on maintaining their mental health when similar public health emergencies occur in the future. In this cross-sectional study, an anonymous survey was distributed online in May 1-15, 2022, in Shanghai. Individuals were eligible to participate if they were currently the caregiver of a child or adolescent (aged 4-17 years). Outcomes were psychosocial functioning of children and adolescents, as reported by parents, using the Pediatric Symptom Checklist-17. COVID-19 exposure and life changes were also reported. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze risk factors for poor psychosocial functioning. In total, 2493 valid questionnaires were analyzed. The rate of positive scores on the global Pediatric Symptom Checklist-17 scale was 16.5% (n=411). Internalizing, attention, and externalizing problem subscale positivity rates were 17.3% (n=431), 10.9% (n=272), and 8.9% (n=221), respectively. Caregivers reported that 64.2% (n=1601) and 20.7% (n=516) of the children's interactions with friends or peers and parents deteriorated, respectively. Compared with male caregivers, female caregivers were less likely to report psychosocial problems in children and adolescents (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 0.68; 95% CI 0.53-0.88). Older children and those with lower COVID-19 Exposure and Family Impact Scales scores were less likely to have psychological problems (aOR 1.15; 95% CI 1.10-1.21). Compared with children with screen times <1 hour per day for recreation, those using screens for >3 hours had higher odds of psychological distress (aOR 2.09; 95% CI 1.47-1.97). Children who spent 1-2 hours exercising and had better interactions with friends or peers and parents showed a trend toward lower odds of psychological problems. Children and adolescents with worse sleep compared with preclosure were more likely to have psychological problems. The prevalence of psychosocial problems among children and adolescents is relatively high. Being young, having more COVID-19 exposure, and having more screen times (>3 h/day), less exercise time (<30 min), worse sleep, and deteriorated interactions with friends or peers and parents were risk factors for poor psychosocial functioning. It is necessary for governments, communities, schools, and families to take appropriate countermeasures to reduce the negative impact of the stringent control measures on caregivers' parenting and psychosocial functioning of children and adolescents.

Does winning a venture competition encourage entrepreneurial exploration? Evidence from China

This paper examines whether winning venture competition spurs entrepreneurs to carry out entrepreneurial exploration. We use data from new venture competitions organized by Shanghai municipal government that are open to innovative small ventures. Using a regression discontinuity design, we show that winning leads to a higher level of entrepreneurial explorations in the year following the competition. However, this effect is reduced for female entrepreneurs, and entrepreneurs whose affiliated ventures have a shorter time of operation. Our findings are consistent with existing theories about entrepreneurship and behavioral economics, including entrepreneurial experimentation and “house money” effect.

Neutron-induced nuclear recoil background is critical to dark matter searches in the PandaX-4T liquid xenon experiment. In this study, we investigate the features of neutron background in liquid xenon and evaluate its contribution in single scattering nuclear recoil events using three methods. The first method is fully based on Monte Carlo simulations. The last two are data-driven methods that also use multiple scattering signals and high energy signals in the data. In the PandaX-4T commissioning data with an exposure of 0.63 tonne-year, all these methods give a consistent result, i.e., there are neutron-induced backgrounds in the dark matter signal region within an approximated nuclear recoil energy window between 5 and 100 keV.

Study of background from accidental coincidence signalsin the PandaX-II experiment* *Supported in part by a grant from the Ministry of Science and Technology of China (2016YFA0400301), National Science Foundation of China (12090060, 12005131, 11905128, 11925502, 11775141), and Office of Science and Technology, Shanghai Municipal Government (18JC1410200)

The PandaX-II experiment employed a 580kg liquid xenon detector to search for the interactions between dark matter particles and the target xenon atoms. The accidental coincidences of isolated signals result in a dangerous background which mimic the signature of the dark matter. We performed a detailed study on the accidental coincidence background in PandaX-II, including the possible origin of the isolated signals, the background level and corresponding background suppression method. With a boosted-decision-tree algorithm, the accidental coincidence background is reduced by 70% in the dark matter signal region, thus the sensitivity of dark matter search at PandaX-II is improved.

Shanghai municipal investment corporation: Extending government power through financialization under state entrepreneurialism

Financialized urban governance means that local governments have been increasingly reliant on financial techniques and in some extreme cases, been captured by shareholders’ interests. However, financialized governance mutates with various characteristics of local governance. This paper unpacks financialized urban governance in China based on the operation of Shanghai Municipal Investment Corporation (SMI). The Shanghai municipal government uses SMI as an intermediary to finance urban development. Based on the latest corporatization of SMI, we illustrate an embryonic form of financialized governance in which the Shanghai municipal government relies on financial means especially shareholding to manage and support SMI. In doing so, the municipal government internalizes financial techniques to manage state assets, seek funding, and guide urban development projects. The power of the state is not undermined during the process of financialization. Instead, the Shanghai government extends its power to the financial market to achieve its goals.

中華人民共和國 初期 攤販 管理 연구: 上海市 사례를 중심으로

The article examines how party-state governed street vendors in 1950’s Shanghai. Street vendor[tanfan], usually refers to independent merchants on streets and neighborhoods, was one of the huge unorganized and uncontrolled group with a long history. In Republican period, Shanghai Police had tried to keep a lid on street vendors but it failed confronting with strong opposition among vendors and citizens. Previous studies on Shanghai street vendors pointed that close and inter dependent relationship between citizens and vendors was the primary reason of this failed governance. And it also attributed successive governance of street vendor after 1949 to the Shanghai party-state’s assault on this relationship by individualization and thorough control of citizens. However, other than connection with citizens, street vendors had several characteristics to challenge the regime and party-state of Shanghai targeted at these. Shanghai Municipal Government recommended cooperative of street vendors in the context of denying small private economy and pursuing convenience of management. Although cooperative hurts street vendor’s interests, street vendors surrendered and be integrated. To overcome vendor’s mobility and disgregation, government organized them as street vendors committee[tanfan weiyuanhui] based on their business place and government affairs. The most differentiated policy was “Education of Patriotism and Law Abiding” against street vendors. During the mass movement, party-state encouraged street vendors to accuse each other’s illegal acts. And it not only insulted disloyal street vendors but also forgave and promoted surrenderer in public. The procedure is usually taken against counter-revolutionaries, bad element, or corrupted cadres. It means that Chinese Communist Party regard street vendors as enemy of regime despite of petty scale of their business, which was almost no difference with laborer. This characterized the governance of street vendors by Chinese Party-state in 1950’s.

Efficacy and safety of vibrating capsule for functional constipation (VICONS): A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter trial

SummaryBackgroundFunctional constipation (FC) is an intractable disease that carries large financial burden as well as emotional and physical stress. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of the newly developed smartphone-controlled vibrating capsule (VC) in patients with FC.MethodsFrom December 2018 to February 2020, we did a multicenter, blinded, placebo-controlled randomised trial in six top general hospitals in China focusing on patients aged 18 to 80 with FC. Patients were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive VCs or placebo treatment for six weeks (two capsules per week) after a two-week baseline period. The primary outcome was the responder rate, defined as the proportion of patients with an increase of at least one complete spontaneous bowel movement (CSBM) per week during treatment compared to baseline in the full analysis set. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT04671264, and is completed.Findings107 patients aged from 18 to 74 were randomly assigned to receive VC (n = 53) or placebo treatment (n = 54). The responder rate in the VC group was significantly higher than that in the placebo group (64·2% vs. 35·8%; difference, 27·7% [95% CI, 10·4–45·1]; P = 0·005). More patients in the VC group reported weekly CSBMs ≥ 1 for at least four weeks during treatment (difference, 22·7% [95% CI, 8–46]; P = 0·022) and follow-up period (difference, 17.3% [95% CI, 0–35]; P = 0·048). The mean Patient Assessment of Constipation-Symptoms score and Patient Assessment of Constipation-Quality of Life score differed significantly from the baseline in both groups (all P < 0·0001). The most common adverse event associated with VC was abdominal discomfort (3·7%).InterpretationVCs can promote defecation, as well as ameliorating symptoms and improving the quality of life in patients with FC with sustained efficacy. Aerobic glycolysis imaging of epileptic foci during the inter-ictal period.

SummaryBackgroundIn drug-resistant epilepsy, surgical resection of the epileptic focus can end seizures. However, success is dependent on the ability to identify foci locations and, unfortunately, current methods like electrophysiology and positron emission tomography can give contradictory results. During seizures, glucose is metabolized at epileptic foci through aerobic glycolysis, which can be imaged through the oxygen-glucose index (OGI) biomarker. However, inter-ictal (between seizures) OGI changes have not been studied, which has limited its application.Methods18 healthy controls and 24 inter-ictal, temporal lobe epilepsy patients underwent simultaneous positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. We used [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose-PET (FDG-PET) to detect cerebral glucose metabolism, and calibrated functional MRI to acquire relative oxygen consumption. With these data, we calculated relative OGI maps.FindingsWhile bilaterally symmetrical in healthy controls, we observed, in patients during the inter-ictal period, higher OGI ipsilateral to the epileptic focus than contralateral. While traditional FDG-PET results and temporal lobe OGI results usually both agreed with invasive electrophysiology, in cases where FDG-PET disagreed with electrophysiology, temporal lobe OGI agreed with electrophysiology, and vice-versa.InterpretationAs either our novel epilepsy biomarker or traditional approaches located foci in every case, our work provides promising insights into metabolic changes in epilepsy. The Relationship Between Knowledge, Attitude, Practice, and Fall Prevention for Childhood in Shanghai, China.

BackgroundEarly childhood fall is a pressing global public health problem and one of the leading causes of child injury. China has a high proportion of children and a high burden of illness from falls. Therefore, educational interventions to prevent childhood fall would be beneficial.MethodsWe used the outcome of knowledge, attitude and practice questionnaire, which was conducted by Pudong New District of Shanghai Municipal Government, to summarize demographic and baseline characteristics grouped by intervention or not, and analyzed descriptive statistics of continuous and categorical variables. A logistic stepwise function model was established to study the influence of different covariables on the degree of injury, and AIC/BIC/AICC was used to select the optimal model. Finally, we carried out single-factor analysis and established a multifactor model by the stepwise function method.ResultsAttitude and actual behavior scores had significant differences. The intervention and control groups had 20.79 ± 3.20 and 20.39 ± 2.89 attitude scores, respectively. Compared to the control group (5.97 ± 1.32), the intervention group had higher actual behavior scores (5.75 ± 1.50). In the univariate analysis results, fathers' education level, mothers' education level, actual behavior and what cares for children had a significant influence on whether children got injured. In multivariate analysis, attitude had a positive influence on whether injured [odds ratio: 1.13 (1.05–1.21), P < 0.001].ConclusionEducational intervention for children and their guardians can effectively reduce the risk of childhood falls, and changes in behavior and attitude are the result of educational influence. Education of childhood fall prevention can be used as a public health intervention to improve children's health.

Exploration of Labor Education System of Private Universities from the Perspective of "Three Comprehensive Education" —Take Shanghai Sanda University of as an example

The MOE issued a set of Guidelines on Labor Education for Primary, Secondary and Higher Education in March, 2020. In August, the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee and Shanghai Municipal Government also issued Implementation Opinions on it. Both guidelines provide the aim of labor education for universities and colleges. As one of the main channels, labor education will dramatically improve the morality enhancing and talents culturing for higher education. This paper lays out the value of labor education in private universities and analyzes the current problems. Based on the three dimensions of complete participation, engagement and collaboration, it aims to construct a solid, comprehensive and effective system of labor education in private universities, thus, creating a new pattern of labor education in private universities in the new era.

RESEARCH ON DEVELOPMENT PROCESS AND OPTIMIZATION STRATEGY OF THE INTERNATIONALIZATION OF SHANGHAI GOVERNMENTS ENGLISH WEB PORTAL

The English web portal of the Shanghai Municipal Government is a platform for the Shanghai Government to release information and provide services, and it is also the best window for publicizing Shanghai to the outside world. This research reviews the history of the English web portal construction of the Shanghai Municipal Government and finds its future direction by gaining enlightenment from the characteristics of foreign governments foreign-language web portals construction, so as to promote more accurate and timely release of information on the government website, and answer questions for foreigners. It is conducive to creating a real service-oriented web portal and increase the influence of communication.

Rectal indometacin to prevent pancreatitis after extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (RIPEP): a single-centre, double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial

Pancreatitis is the most common complication of pancreatic extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). There has been little research into effective prevention of post-ESWL pancreatitis. Therefore, we aimed to assess the efficacy of prophylactic rectal indometacin in preventing post-ESWL pancreatitis. In this double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial done at Changhai Hospital (Shanghai, China), patients aged 18 years or older with chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic stones (>5 mm in diameter) who were eligible for treatment with ESWL were randomly allocated using a computer-generated randomisation table, in a 1:1 ratio, to receive 100 mg rectal indometacin or identical glycerin (placebo) suppositories 30 min before ESWL. Patients, endoscopists, and outcome assessors were masked to group allocation. The primary outcome was the incidence of post-ESWL pancreatitis within 24 h of ESWL, analysed by the intention-to-treat principle. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT02797067. Between May 31, 2016, and June 26, 2019, 1370 patients were enrolled, with 685 patients randomly assigned to the rectal indometacin group and 685 patients to the placebo group. All patients received their allocated intervention and completed final follow-up, and were included in the intention-to-treat analysis. Post-ESWL pancreatitis occurred in 60 (9%) patients in the rectal indometacin group and 84 (12%) patients in the placebo group (relative risk 0·71, 95% CI 0·52-0·98; p=0·042). Transient adverse events occurred in 235 (34%) patients in the rectal indometacin group and 252 (37%) patients in the placebo group, with asymptomatic hyperamylasaemia being the most common (189 [28%] patients vs 197 [29%] patients). No difference was noted between groups in the incidence of other complications and transient adverse events. Pre-procedural administration of rectal indometacin is an efficacious and safe means of reducing the incidence of post-ESWL pancreatitis.
