Identification of fingerprint patterns and axial triradius digital angles on male prisoners at Prison X in 2021

Dermatoglyphics is the science of describing streaks on the skin at the tips of the fingers and toes as well as the palms and feet and skin folds on both palms. Several studies have shown a distinctive dermatoglyphic tendency in prisoners. This study aims to determine the fingerprint pattern and the angle of ATD in male prisoners involved in murder and sexual crimes at Prison X. The research sample was obtained by total sampling. The sample size was 113 people. Fingerprint patterns were taken using the Digital persona U.are.U 4500 Fingerprint reader and the ATD angle using a wet stamp on plain paper. The results showed that the dominant fingerprint patterns were the ulnar loop (341 of 720 fingers) and plain whorl (202 of 720 fingers). The dominant ATD angle was >50°. In conclusion, there is no distinctive trend in the fingerprint patterns of male inmates, but there is a distinctive trend in the ATD angle.

What differentiates sexual from non-sexual homicides? A case–control study

ABSTRACT Research comparing sexual homicide (SH) and non-sexual homicide (NSH) has been rare outside North America and Europe and has contributed to addressing whether SH is primarily a sexual or homicide offence or a hybrid. This case–control study compared 142 SH and 142 NSH cases from Australia and New Zealand. Bivariate analyses indicated SH offenders more often had sexual problems, lacked intimacy, and appeared more prosocial, had less serious mental health problems, with lifestyles giving opportunities to access victims. Planning rather than reacting, sexual fantasies and arousal, time, and isolation to interact with victims privately, control of victims and crime scenes, lack of remorse, reliving the experience later, preventing detection, and more intrusive, intimate, and sadistic interactions characterised SH offences. Victims were more likely to be strangers, unrelated, single, and living alone. We developed multivariate models to predict SH, with the final model including: offender single, with a sexual disorder, but not a substance use disorder or major mental illness; offence long in duration, with expressive physical violence and unusual or ritualistic features, against a stranger, in an isolated location. These results are consistent with previous studies and indicate SH is different from NSH, supporting differential practice with SH. However, the findings could primarily reflect the over representation of sexual sadism in SH and the over representation of intimate partner victims in NSH. Future research needs to consider the heterogeneity of SH.

No Time for Justice? Obstetric Violence, Damages Claims and Prescription Periods in South African Law

Obstetric violence is currently not acknowledged as a form of gender-based violence in South African law. In this article I deal with the various issues associated with this failure to correctly categorise obstetric violence. One of the issues relates to access to legal recourse for survivors through delictual claims (torts). Delictual claims are wrongful acts or limitations of rights that can lead to legal liability in the form of monetary compensation. The current framing of obstetric violence as medical malpractice limits women's time to launch a case to only three years after the violation. To show how this issue of prescription (a legal principle where an outstanding debt can be extinguished after a prescribed time period) plays out, I focus on the 2020 report by the South African Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) on the forced or coerced sterilisation of women living with HIV at state healthcare facilities. I also examine the current case of the Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS), a university-based human rights law clinic, which represents over 40 women who have experienced different forms of obstetric violence at state-run facilities. In both of these examples, I explain how justice through legal recourse is denied to these victims or survivors through the mischaracterisation of obstetric violence as medical malpractice in current South African law. To show that the three-year ‘limit’ or prescription period to institute a legal claim is unjustifiable, I explore three reasons why women may not choose to or be able to proceed with a legal claim within that time period. The first of these relates to the ‘personal’ barrier women face around acknowledging they have experienced obstetric violence and bringing a claim against the state. The second, the ‘political’ barrier, includes the general and prevalent systemic gender discrimination experienced by women in South Africa and the specific barriers women face around access to dignified treatment in the country's public healthcare system. Finally, an ‘economic’ barrier is the general inaccessibility of legal representation for economically disadvantaged people in the country. Proceeding from the above, I then argue that by acknowledging obstetric violence as a form of gender-based violence and aligning it with legislation around prescription periods for other forms of gender-based violence (such as sexual offences), the burdens related to access to justice (at least in delict) can be lightened for survivors.

Implications of Victim Blaming Narratives for Sex Workers: Informing Social Work Practice and the Law

The purpose of the paper is to explore social works practice response to sexual violence and the impact of victim blaming narratives for sex workers. Using a feminist standpoint epistemology, in keeping with an interpretivist/feminist qualitative framework, we critically explore the oppressive structures which impact on service users′ lives. Data collection consisted of interviews with 15 female sex workers in the Republic of Ireland. In locating sex workers experiences, we set out the argument that social work practice is complicit in victim blaming narratives in response to sexual violence. Themes emerging from the data to support this claim are (1) victim blaming perspectives for sex workers (2) reporting sexual violence to authorities, and (3) impact of the Law. By using the Irish standpoint, and the 2017 Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act, where sex work activities remain subject to penal measures our paper provides conclusive evidence which calls into question social works response to sexual violence. We argue for a revised social work response to sexual violence which includes a critical examination of ′victim blaming′ narratives and the current legislative process which inform their practice.

Acts of sexual violence have now become a crucial issue regarding the moral decline in society. Sexual violence is a situation where a person experiences harassment in the form of inappropriate words and physical contact without mutual consent, resulting in discomfort for the victim.In fact, Article 28B Paragraph 2 of the 1945 Constitution states, 'Every child has the right to survive, grow, and develop, and has the right to protection from violence and discrimination.' However, in reality, many communities that still uphold patriarchal values often offer socially manipulative solutions, such as asking the victim to marry the perpetrator. Reflecting on this article, every human being has the right to be protected from acts of violence. However, the widespread sexual crimes against teenagers and the failure and injustice in handling such cases have become serious issues. Motivated by the spirit to prevent and address the problem of sexual violence, the service team implements sexual violence prevention education for the younger generation. This program is a child-friendly initiative that not only addresses sexual crimes but also serves as an educational platform. It is not limited to handling victims but also aims to break the vicious cycle involving teenagers as perpetrators of sexual violence. Therefore, this program is expected to answer, assist, and raise public awareness about the critical issue of sexual crimes in Indonesia.

How Children Stop Adult Perpetrators From Unwanted Touching Within an Institutional Setting: Termination Patterns During Sexual Contact Stage.

This qualitative study analyzes victims' narratives of male-on-male child molestation within the Boy Scouts of America. The focus of previous literature on sex crime victims mostly centered on how to avoid sex offenders based on the offenders' behaviors and effective victims' treatment plans to alleviate their posttrauma as a result of sexual abuse. Yet studies have not provided detailed descriptions of when and how to resist sexual advances to children when such incidents are in progress within youth-oriented institutions. Few have examined victim narratives to discover the dynamics of child molestation, such as physical and verbal interactions between the two parties while sexual touching is occurring. The author used victims' narratives to identify how boy victims responded to unwanted sexual advances by scout leaders within the Boy Scouts of America. Based on qualitative-oriented analysis, this study presents verbal and physical resisting patterns of male victims and the effectiveness of such actions in terminating sexual advances. The findings suggest practical and potential intervention strategies so children know how to stop adult perpetrators from developing unwanted touching within youth-centric institutions.

Perlindungan Perlindungan Terhadap Perempuan Korban Kekerasan Berbasis Gender Online Dalam Era Digital

In today’s digital era, sexual violence crimes often occur in cyberspace. Based on the annual records of the National Commission on Violence Against Women, reports of cases of online gender-based violence have increased in the last five years. Cyberspace is currently not a safe space for women. As a basic law, the Indonesian Constitution of 1945 explicitly regulates the right to a sense of security and protection for everyone. The methods used in this study are normative juridical using a legislative approach and a case approach. The purpose of this study is to provide legal arguments regarding whether an event is right or wrong and how the event should be according to law. Based on the results of the study, in law enforcement, law enforcement officers often use the electronic information and transactions law and the pornography law which results in victims being in a vulnerable position. The negative stigma from society and criminalization of victims result in a minimum of cases being resolved through litigation so that victims do not get the right to handling and recovery as mandated by the law on sexual violence. The state must guarantee a safe space for women in cyberspace. The state must carry out its commitment to provide justice and restitution to victims as mandated by law. For the sake of legal certainty, the government must immediately ratify the implementing regulations of the law on sexual violence. Provide socialization to the public regarding the law on sexual violence to increase public legal awareness and improve the competence of law enforcement officers by providing training in handling cases of online gender-based violence.

The role of the Interview Manager (IM) in UK policing: perceptions and experiences of the IM when deployed in high stakes crime investigations

ABSTRACT The last 30 years have seen a dramatic shift in investigative interview training in the United Kingdom (UK) as a result of miscarriages of justice cases featuring vulnerable suspects. In 2001, the UK Police adopted a five-tiered approach to investigative interviewing, with Tier 1 for new recruits through to Tier 5 for interview managers (IMs). The IM is responsible for overseeing strategic decisions with regard to the investigative interviewing process. Even though the role of an IM has been in existence for over twenty years, it is one of the most under-researched aspects of investigative interviewing. The aim of the current paper is to present an oversight of the role of an IM in UK policing using a self-report questionnaire, presenting the responses of 53 UK police IMs’ perceptions of their role in high-stakes crime investigations. Content analysis was carried out on the responses and revealed that IMs are most frequently deployed to murder investigations, followed by serious assaults, then sexual offences. However, not all of the respondents had received the pre-requisite training for the role. Nevertheless, the IMs broadly agreed that the senior investigating officer respected the advice provided by the IM, though without fully understanding what the role entailed. IMs unanimously said the role was crucial to high-stakes investigations and presented their perceptions of the skills, qualities and knowledge that IMs require to perform the role. Finally, future directions of research in this area are outlined.

Criminal Histories, Risk Profiles, and Predictors of Recidivism Among Men Who Sexually Offend Over the Age of 60 Years

Research has consistently found sexual recidivism risk drops as men convicted of sexual offenses age, but little research exists on those few men who do sexually offend when older. The current study examined the criminal histories, risk profiles, and predictors of sexual recidivism in a large sample of men who sexually offended over the age of 60 years. Analyses showed low levels of sexual offending under the age of 60 years prior to the commission of a sexual offense over the age of 60 years, with only 27% of the sample having sexually offended under 60 years. Examination of the risk profiles of the sample evidenced high levels of possible deviant sexual attraction and sexual cognitive distortions, which restricted the range on these variables, and limited their ability to predict sexual recidivism. Instead, nonsexual risk factors and protective factors appeared better predictors of sexual recidivism for men who have sexually offended over the age of 60 years.

Mental Health Among Incarcerated Male Youth With Violent and Sexual Offense Convictions by Race and Offense Type.

Incarcerated adolescents are at increased risk for negative mental health outcomes. Race and offense type can differentially influence legal outcomes as well as mental health symptom presentation. Our study examined whether adolescent mental health problems differed for 1,303 male youth at a Southeastern U.S.-based juvenile prison depending on the adolescent's race and offense type (specifically offenses involving physical or sexual violence). Results indicated significantly different patterns of mental health symptoms and psychopathic traits between Black and White male youth and between male youth with adjudicated violent and sexual offenses. Study findings have important implications for policies and practices centered around rehabilitative practices in juvenile prisons.

What About Language?: A Mixed Methods Examination of the Impact of Person-Centered Language on Students' Perceptions of Individuals Who Commit Sex Offenses.

Person-centered language is a well-known approach to reducing stigmatizing labels among marginalized groups. However, little research has explored person-centered language's impact in criminal justice classrooms. Utilizing a mixed-method research design, this study explores the impact of person-centered language on students' perceptions of persons convicted of sex offenses. The study used three sections of an online Sex Crimes course. The course sections were identical, except for the language used and awareness of person-centered language; the control group section did not utilize person-centered language, the second section utilized person-centered language, and the third section utilized person-centered language and was given an informational lecture on stigmatizing language. Quantitative data was collected from the Perceptions of Sex Offenders Scale at the beginning and end of the semester. Students' end-of-semester reflection papers served as the qualitative component. The findings suggest shifts in punitive attitudes toward sentencing and management for the group exposed to person-centered language and the informational lecture. These differences were not apparent for the other groups and subscales. While qualitative data provided a more in-depth understanding of students' perceptions, overall, exposure to person-centered language didn't seem to impact student perceptions. However, exposure alongside a lecture about person-centered language, seemingly had a more pronounced impact on students' perceptions, suggesting that transparency surrounding language and reducing stigma are important components of person-centered language. The findings have implications for using person-centered language for criminal justice pedagogical practices, as well as considerations beyond the classroom (e.g., program development and curricula).

This paper aims to analyze the role of the Women and Child Services Unit (PPA) of Satreskrim Polresta Banyumas in dealing with the crime of prostitution against minors and the factors causing the crime in the territory of the law of Polrest Banyumas. A qualitative approach is used to collect data through interviews, observations, and document analysis. The results of the research show that the PPA Unit has a significant role in dealing with cases of sexual abuse against minors, including in the prevention, law enforcement, and victim recovery aspects. The causes of such crimes include low awareness of children's rights, gender inequality, lack of adequate sexual education, and vulnerable socio-economic conditions. The conclusions reaffirmed the need for collaborative efforts between various parties, including government agencies, communities, and non-governmental organizations, in improving child protection and combating sexual offences against minors in the area of law of Polresta Banyumas. This research contributes to a greater understanding of the dynamics of dealing with crimes of sexual immorality against minors and the efforts that can be made to address them in a holistic way. Reflective functioning and emotion regulation in adolescents with a history of sexual offending: a comparative study with a non-offending control group

BackgroundSexual offenses encompass a diverse array of behaviors across various contexts, affecting numerous individuals. Despite the prevalence of sexual offending among adolescents, there is still a limited understanding of this population. To contribute further to the literature in this field, the present study was conducted to compare a group of male adolescents convicted of sexual offenses with a control group in terms of reflective functioning (RF), emotion regulation (ER) strategies, and emotion dysregulation (ED).Methods60 male adolescents aged 12 to 18 years (M = 16.90; SD = 0.97) who had been convicted of at least one serious sexual offense were recruited from male adolescents referred by juvenile courts to the Legal Medicine Organization in Mashhad, Iran, and compared with a control group of non-offending adolescents consisting of 60 male adolescents aged 12 to 18 years (M = 16.97; SD = 0.82) who were attending school. The groups were matched on age and education level.ResultsA comparison between these two groups revealed that adolescents with a history of sexual offending exhibited poorer RF capacity, greater use of suppression as an ER strategy, and higher scores in all ED domains (p’s < 0.001) except non-acceptance of emotional responses compared with the control group.ConclusionsResults suggest that RF, ER strategies, and ED need to be considered as important psychological factors in understanding and treating adolescents with a history of sexual offending.

Studi Deskriptif Gambaran Pola Asuh Pada Pelaku Pedophilia

Sexual violence is a phenomenon that often occurs in the world and in Indonesia. Data showed that victims of sexual crimes are dominated by the 13-17 age group, while perpetrators are dominated by the 25-44 age group. In this case, adults who commit sexual crimes against children are called pedophiles. This study aims to determine the type of parenting that is most highly applied to pedophilia perpetrators. This research uses descriptive quantitative methods. The research was conducted on inmates of correctional institutions with child protection cases. The results showed that the subjects in this study received permissive and authoritarian parenting types in the high category, while democratic parenting was in the low category. It can be concluded that permissive and authoritarian parenting are the types of parenting most often applied to pedophilia offenders.

Sexual harassment prevention application with a Moerija Cultural approach for students with special needs

In Indonesia, the government is trying to safeguard and protect children from sexual crimes. Sexual crimes are particularly vulnerable to students with special needs. These students have limitations and minimal access to sexual education, making them frequent targets of sexual harassment and abuse. Students with special needs are at a higher risk of becoming victims of sexual violence due to their unique vulnerabilities. The impact of such abuse includes inferiority, anxiety, panic, and even depression. This must be addressed immediately, as it can disrupt the psychological and emotional development of students with special needs, hindering their potential to thrive and compete in the increasingly competitive digital era. The aim of this community service activity is to provide digital media with a local Moerija cultural approach to introduce sexual and application-based education. The method used in these community service activities is participant active learning, ensuring engagement and practical application. The results obtained are the development of an application designed to prevent sexual violence, utilizing a culturally relevant Moerija approach to raise awareness and enhance protective measures.

The “virtual” child: The unconscious functions of child sexual exploitation material

AbstractThe narratives of individuals using child sexual exploitation material (CSEM) highlight the individual and unconscious functions of this type of sexual offense. Fluid cycles of projection into and identification with the children in the imagery were evident, as were marked differences in the intensity and exclusivity of pedophilic sexual preference. Anger was a common trigger, but conscious awareness of any associated hostilities toward the child in the imagery was vigorously defended against. The Internet, the now dominant context of child sexual abuse, offers a distinct type of environment, on the porous boundary between the internal and the external, that seems to encourage regression to early, varied paraphilic sexuality and part‐object relations. Interactions in online forums facilitated the projection of pedophilic interests and sadistic impulses into other users. Broad empirical findings on the characteristics of those who use CSEM, coupled with this study and clinical experience, suggest that many who engage in this activity have an essentially neurotic structure.

A Narrative Review of Sex Tourism in India: a Danger that Needs Addressal

Kolkata holds the title for possessing Asia’s largest red light area. Therefore, India is one of the largest booming industries for commercial sex tourism and a transnational crime .Through the review it was analysed that human trafficking and sex slavery is in increased numbers. Various reports/case studies state that missing numbers of women and children are vast in number and included in dark figures of crime. It was also studied that some victims were voluntarily involved in the sex work while mostly children were exploited into the business. This paper explores the dark side of sex tourism in India. This paper is a discussion paper that reviews about sex tourism , activities that run under its shade such as human trafficking and slavery, reasons for this tourism developing in the country and at last recommends key points to deter illegal Sex tourism. Hence this paper highlights the situation of human trafficking of children and women into Sex tourism and gives attention to curb this criminality from the society.

“Unless you’ve got a conviction, there’s not much you can do”: Rethinking long-term disruption and exit strategy in RASSO investigations

Purpose This paper aims to evaluate how five Operation Soteria Bluestone (OSB) participating forces integrated principles of procedural justice and proactive disruption of offending into their investigations, specifically during the closing stages of a case when considering exit strategy and longer-term prevention. Design/methodology/approach A mixed-methods approach was taken, including 32 semi-structured interviews with officers and 59 case reviews of recent rape and serious sexual offences (RASSO). Data analysis methods included qualitative thematic analysis of interviews, while data from reviewed case logs was extracted and analysed using a bespoke case review tool. Findings Increased workloads, preparation of evidence and relational/communication difficulties with the crown prosecution service (CPS) were identified as barriers to implementing long-term disruption options. Dedicated resourcing, training and support are needed to promote suspect-focused investigative strategy and wider uptake of long-term disruption methods. Early investigative approach was also found to have “snowball” effects on suspect exit strategy, with initial lack of suspect focus and preoccupation with victim credibility, impeding consideration of long-term disruption and safeguarding options. Findings also point to a disparity between promising practice in relation to procedural justice for victims and (a relative lack of) proactive policing of repeat suspects. Originality/value The study represents a novel contribution to research on policing RASSO, illustrating the scale and nature of the obstacles to changing how these offences are investigated, even when under intense scrutiny from policy makers. It also highlights how increased organisational investment and support is linked to positive changes in practice in some forces.
