The complexes [M(CO) 3(NCMe) 3] (M = Mo and W) react with X 2 (X = Br and I) in NCMe to afford high yields of the new seven-coordinate complexes [MX 2(CO) 3(NCMe) 2].

Reactions of substituted carbonyl complexes of molybdenum(0), Mo(CO) 4(DAB) and Mo(CO) 2(PPh 3) 2(DAB) with Cl 2, Br 2 and I 2 (DAB = 1,4-diazabutadiene)

The reactions of Mo(CO) 4(DAB) compounds (DAB = diacetyldihydrazone (DDH), glyoxalcyclohexylamine (GCy)) with Cl 2, Br 2 and I 2 under mild conditions can be described as oxidative elimination reactions. CO is eliminated, and seven-coordinate molybdenum(II) species containing halogen are generally formed, but frequently ionic or neutral binuclear species through bridging CO or halogen were isolated: {[MoX(CO) 2(DDH) 2] 2(μ-CO 2)}X 2 (X = Cl, Br), {[Mo(CO) 2(DDH) 2] 2(μ-Br) 2}Br 2, [MoCl(CO) 2(GCy)] 2(μ-Cl) 2. In these compounds DDH acts as monodentate ligand. One binuclear molybdenum(I) complex, [Mo(CO) 3(DDH)] 2(I 3) 2, and one molybdenum(III) complex, [MoBr 2(CO) 3(GCy)]Br were also isolated. Only one typical oxidative elimination reaction product, MoI 2(CO) 3(GCy), was isolated. However the reactions of Mo(CO) 2(PPh 3) 2(DAB) compounds (DAB = glyoxaldihydrazone (GDH) and (GCy)) with halogens in the same mild conditions take place with PPh 3 elimination and formation of typical oxidative elimination products MoX 2(CO) 2(PPh 3)(DAB).

Chromium, molybdenum and tungsten carbonyl derivatives of an unusual oxygen tripod ligand

(Cyclopentadienyl)tris(diethylphosphito- P)cobaltate(1-), [(C 5H 5)Co{P(O)-(OC 2H 5) 2} 3] −, reacts as an oxygen tripod ligand L − with (CH 3CN) 3M(CO) 3 (M = Cr, Mo, W) in water to produce the tricarbonyl complexes [LM(CO) 3] −. These anions react with N-methyl- N-nitroso- p-toluenesulfonamide to give the nitrosyl compounds [LM(CO) 2(NO)], (M = Cr, Mo or W). Further substitution with triethylphosphine yields [LMo(CO)(NO)(PEt 3)]. The air-stable and volatile hydride complex [LMo(CO) 3H] can be precipitated from an aqueous solution of Na[LMo(CO) 3] by addition of acetic acid. Heating the molybdenum hydride [LMo(CO) 3H] to 150°C in vacuo results in the formation of the metalmetal bonded species [{LMo(CO) 3} 2]; this compound, containing formal seven-coordinate molybdenum(I), is rigid on the NMR time scale at room temperature.

Crystal structure of (2,2'-Bipyridyl)tricarbonylchloro(chloromercurio)molybdenum-(II)

The crystal structure of the title compound, [(C10H8N2)Mo(CO)3(HgCl)Cl], has been determined at 295 K from diffractometer data, being refined by full-matrix methods to a residual of 0.08 (1407 reflections, I > σ(I)). Crystals are monoclinic, P21/c, a = 12.685(4), b = 12.494(4), c = 11.925(3) Ǻ, β = 118.70(2)�, Z = 4. The seven-coordinate molybdenum atom has the following bond distances: Mo-Hg, 2.700(7); <Mo-N>, 2.29(4); <Mo-C>, 1.89(4); Mo-Cl, 2.51(2).
