Serum trace element levels in HIV-infected subjects

The absolute number of T4 cells and the serum concentrations of Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, P, Se, and Zn were determined in 59 Walter-Reed staged, HIV-infected men, compared to healthy controls, serum levels of Ca, Cu, and Fe were significantly higher, those of P and Se significantly lower in the HIV-infected subjects. In the HIV-infected cases, but not in the controls, the concentrations of Se and Zn, of Ca with Cu and Fe, and of Fe with P, were directly correlated. In the controls, the correlation between the levels of K and Mg was direct, and inverse between those of Zn and P. Trace element levels did not significantly correlate with WR-stage. However, the absolute number of T4 cells was directly correlated with the serum Mg concentration.

Papillomavirus and c-myc antigen expression in normal and neoplastic cervical epithelium.

Cervical punch biopsy specimens or brushings were collected from 33 patients with cervical human papilloma virus (HPV) infection, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), or invasive cervical carcinoma, and from eight control patients with recent normal cervical cytology. Prostatic chippings obtained from six men with benign prostatic hypertrophy were used as further controls. Biopsy specimens and brushings were assayed by flow cytometry for c-myc oncogene antigen and papillomavirus antigen expression and rate of cell division (by measuring DNA content). Results obtained from analysis of specimens and brushings were similar in terms of c-myc antigen and total DNA content, but when the percentages of nuclei from biopsy and brush specimens staining positively with antibody to papilloma viral antigens were compared, brush specimens gave consistently higher percentages than biopsy specimens. More specimens from normal epithelium were c-myc antigen positive (five of eight, (63%) than specimens from CIN II or III (two of 10, 20%), or invasive carcinoma (0%). No association was found between c-myc antigen expression and cell division. HPV antigen positive specimens were found to contain more dividing cells than negative specimens.

Study of trace elements (copper & zinc) in oral submucous fibrosis

A study of serum levels of trace elements like copper and zinc in oral submucous fibrosis (O.S.M.F.) reveals that the mean serum copper level rises by 24.60 ug/100 ml (p<0.001) as compared to controls. The mean serum zinc level did not show any significant alteration. The copperzinc ratio also shows a rise of 0.28 (p<0.05). The maximum rise of mean serum copper level is observed in stage I of oral submucous fibrosis. This study may be helpful as an additional diagnostic tool for oral submucous fibrosis and may also reveal some clues about the advancement of disease. The mean rise in serum copper level is less in oral submucous fibrosis than in malignant lesions. This, though a lesser rise but a definite and constant one, may favour the possibility of oral submucous fibrosis being a pre-malignant lesion, as thought earlier by Paymaster (1956).

The relationship between the levels of trace elements in the serum of mice bearing subcutaneous tumors and the use of laser, hematoporphyrin derivatives, gamma-ray and hyperthermia treatment

The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes of Cu, Zn and Se in the serum of ICR strain mice bearing subcutaneous tumors after various tumor treatments. Ascites tumor cells were implanted into the subcutaneous tissue of the femoral area of mice. After the tumors had grown to 19±2 mm in diameter, the animals were divided into many groups and received tumor treatments with laser, Hpd, γ-ray and hyperthermia singularly and in various combinations. The contents of Cu, Zn and Se in serum were measured with ICP-AES at different times after treatment. The serum Cu levels (SCL) of mice bearing subcutaneous tumors were significantly increased, while the levels of Zn and Se (SZL & SSL) were decreased; Cu/Zn ratios were also higher than normal. Except following Hpd treatment, there was a trend for the SCL, SZL, SSL and Cu/Zn ratio to recover to normal value after treatment. Most of the Measurements especially for SCL, SZL and Cu/Zn ratio, were in the normal range on the twelfth Furthermore, comparison of the survival rates showed that the therapeutic effect of combined treatments was higher than that of a singular treatment and the treatment of HPD injection had the least therapeutic effect. This data also revealed that the changes of SCL, SZL and Cu/Zn ratio directly correlated with the therapeutic results of the various treatments.

The Zinc, Copper, and Selenium Status of a Selected Sample of Canadian Elderly Women

The zinc, copper, and selenium status of 90 noninstitutionalized Canadian elderly women (M age = 70.3 years) in a university community and consuming self-selected diets was assessed using hair and serum trace element levels and dietary trace element intakes. Mean (+/- SD) serum zinc and copper levels (analyzed via atomic absorption spectrophotometry, AA) were 1.09 +/- 0.13 and 1.22 +/- 0.29 micrograms/ml, respectively. Mean serum selenium (+/- SD) (analyzed via instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) was 0.115 +/- 0.03 micrograms/ml. Median hair trace element values, analyzed via INAA, were 156 for zinc, 12.8 for copper, and 0.63 micrograms/g for selenium. Mean (+/- SD) daily dietary intakes determined via chemical analysis of 1-day diet duplicates were 1.2 +/- .06 mg/d for copper (via AA), 7.6 +/- 3.3 mg/d and 77.6 +/- 44.5 micrograms/d for zinc and selenium (via INAA), respectively, whereas mean copper and zinc intakes (+/- SD) calculated from 3-day records were 1.6 +/- 0.7 and 10.1 +/- 3.5 mg/day, respectively. Median hair and serum trace element values were above the levels associated with deficiencies. Thus the zinc, copper and selenium status of these elderly women appeared adequate.

Trace elements in burned patients: Studies of zinc, copper and iron contents in serum

The significance of three trace elements in thermal injuries is stressed with reference to previous work. Zinc, copper and iron were simultaneously studied by means of atomic absorption spectrophotometry in a group of patients burned at a major disaster. Zinc and iron gave high values within the first 6 hours, descending to minimal values at the 48th hour post burn. The three remain low in close correlation to the burned surface area. Furthermore, copper and iron did not return to normal levels in the larger burns. Our study differs from others on the same subject in that the onset of decreased serum levels of trace elements occurs sooner in our series. We suggest that attempts be made to supplement the diet with trace elements to restore normal levels. This may well lead to an improvement in healing and an amelioration of the concomitant anaemia.

Changes in serum trace element levels following local irradiation of a solid tumor

The changes in concentrations of a number of trace elements have been determined by neutron activation analysis in tumor, liver, and blood serum of host animals, following local irradiation of a solid tumor (3924A Morris hepatoma). These trace element changes are compared to the changes observed in a parallel study of the effects of the chemotherapeutic agent 5-fluorouracil on the same tumor. Since the changes in some of the trace elements parallel the changes in pathological and biochemical factors resulting from the insult of radiation on the tumor, these trace elements may be valuable markers in the clinical evaluation of therapeutic response and as monitors of the long term effects of cancer therapy.
