The purpose of this project was to develop and pilot-test a nutrition program for parents, coaches and 400 children 7 to 10 years of age participating in a youth soccer league. The objectives were to increase parents, coaches and children's awareness and knowledge regarding sports nutrition and to encourage families to use easy to prepare recipes for meals and snacks on game and practice days. Based on a needs assessment of parents' nutritional concerns, a series of nutrition booklets and refrigerator fact sheets were developed. Topics included Nutrition Tips for parents of Young Athletes, Beverages Kids and Sports, Eating Tips for Game Day, Fast Foods Kids and Sports, Snacks and Facts, and Quick and Easy Meals for On-The-Go Families. To kick off the program, Nutraman presented information on sports nutrition for parents and children while a star high school soccer player and his coach demonstrated various soccer skills. Nutrition resources were either distributed to parents via coaches and children during games or brought home to parents by children. Survey results along with individual comments from participants suggest that the brochures were useful, they increased awareness and knowledge regarding sports nutrition and encouraged positive dietary choices by some parents and children. There was concern that some parents did not receive all six booklets and refrigerator fact sheets. In the future, alternative methods to communicate a nutrition message to parents through community-based sports programs should be addressed.
