Electronic Serials Cataloging Workshop (SCCTP)

Serials cataloging is a difficult specialty to master, often requiring the cataloger to grapple with changes in title, frequency, numbering, and whether or not a given title is current, ceased, or resurrected. Until relatively recently, one of the few constants about serial issues was that they were delivered in a physical medium, usually in print, but sometimes also in microform. The advent of electronic resources adds another layer of complexity to an already amorphous type of material by rendering it virtually. The Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program's (SCCTP's) Electronic Serials Cataloging Workshop is intended to help catalogers new to the challenges presented by electronic serials by providing a comprehensive overview of CONSER (Cooperative ONline SERials) practice; the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, second edition (AACR2); and MARC 21 tagging specific to electronic serials.

CONSER Updates: The Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program at Ten Years and Revision of Integrating Resources: A Cataloging Manual

In this column, CONSER specialist Hien Nguyen recognizes the ten-year anniversary of the Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program. She discusses program successes, including the development of new material for Web delivery. CONSER coordinator Les Hawkins gives an update on the revision of Integrating Resources: A Cataloging Manual, the basic documentation used by CONSER and BIBCO members to create and maintain records for integrating resources.

SCCTP Electronic Serials Cataloging Workshop

ABSTRACT This preconference was a presentation of the Electronic Serials Cataloging Workshop created by the Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program (SCCTP). The workshop assumed a general knowledge of print serials cataloging and focused on issues specific to cataloging electronic serials. Presenter Jeanne Baker followed the course content developed by SCCTP, while highlighting changes introduced by the new CONSER standard record where applicable.

Advanced Serials Cataloging Workshop

ABSTRACT This pre-conference covered all 10 sessions of the Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program Advanced Serials Cataloging Workshop. The workshop gave an overview of the bibliographic description of serials and explored the most common problems encountered in the cataloging of serials, focusing on print. Steve Shadle helped workshop attendees develop cataloger's judgment for decisions that need to be made in the cataloging of challenging serials, including when to treat a resource as a serial as opposed to a monograph or integrating resource. He discussed the title, numbering and publishing statement, main entry, and uniform titles for serials, pointing out the differences from monograph cataloging. He then discussed the more complicated elements of serials cataloging, such as notes, series, title changes, and linking fields, including those used for former and later title, translations, editions, supplements, and other related works.

Basic Serials Cataloging Workshop

ABSTRACT This two-day pre-conference covered the seven core sessions of the Basic Serials Cataloging Workshop of the Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program. The first eight sessions of the workshop were covered. Each session contained illustrative examples and practice exercises. The goals of the workshop were to give participants the ability to identify a serial, create original records for serials, identify and edit serials records, and become familiar with MARC tagging used for serials. The sessions were practical with many useful “rules-of-thumb” examples. The scope of the workshop focused on non-electronic serials unless specifically mentioned.

Integrating Resources Cataloging Workshop

SUMMARY This pre-conference covered the first four sessions of the Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program's Integrating Resources Cataloging Workshop, focusing on electronic resources. Steven Miller defined integrating resources and how to identify them. He then explained initial decisions to make when cataloging these resources. He covered the MARC fields and AACR2rules that are unique for integrating resources and new to people accustomed to cataloging e-journals. Miller discussed how records should be updated to reflect changes in the resources, including how to update records created before the new rules. He concluded by discussing the difficulties of maintaining records for these resources.

The Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) is working to make tools available to catalogers of electronic serials and integrating resources. These resources are being developed to help catalogers understand and implement the 2002 revision of Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2d ed. (AACR2), related Library of Congress Rule Interpretations, and new MARC 21 coding. This column focuses on the revision plans for documentation of the program components of the PCC and new workshops from the Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program. Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program (SCCTP)

Summary The Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program (SCCTP) makes available standardized training materials and provides a pool of experienced trainers to deliver continuing education workshops. The program is authoritative, effective, affordable, and widely available. This paper describes the experiences of a number of trainees and trainers who participated in the Basic Serials Cataloging Workshops given across Canada.

From AACR Revision to CONSER's SCCTP: An Interview with Jean Hirons

ABSTRACT Jean Hirons, CONSER Coordinator, Library of Congress, discusses her career in serials cataloging and control. Topics include the revision of AACR concerning seriality and treatment of continuing resources, Hirons' critical role in this process, and the roles of other individuals and of CONSER task forces; harmonization of AACR proposed revisions with ISBD/S and ISSN standards and practices; changes in CONSER's governance; the continuing development of CONSER's Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program (SCCTP); the creation of a publication pattern database; and CONSER's future.

The Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program: A Trainer's Perspective

ABSTRACT The Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program (SCCTP) is a cooperative program that provides standardized training materials and trained trainers in the field of serials cataloging. The SCCTP was created under the auspices of the Cooperative Online Serials (CONSER) Program, a component of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC). In this paper, the author describes his reasons for volunteering to become a trainer for the SCCTP, his experiences at a SCCTP “train the trainer” workshop, and describes the first SCCTP workshop, the Basic Serials Cataloging Workshop, that he and a colleague conducted for the Harvard University Libraries.

A Trainee Perspective on the Basic Serials Cataloging Workshop

ABSTRACT This article is a trainee's perspective of the Basic Serials Cataloging Workshop, the first course in the Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program (SCCTP). A brief description of the course is offered as well as a discussion of the program goals. The emphasis of this course was the need to maintain CONSER standards in creating serial records and this article offers one person's view of how the trainers presented material from the CONSER Editing Guide and CONSER Cataloging Manual to guide participants in following those standards.

SCCTP - Continuing Education for Continuing Resources

The Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program (SCCTP) provides standardized authoritative training materials and trains catalogers to present the materials in support of continuing education for serials cataloging. SCCTP was inaugurated in 1998 and became operational during 1999. This article explains the impetus for the program, how it evolved during the planning stages, and possibilities for its future.
