Capacitive deionization (CDI) isa novel, cost-effectiveand environmentally friendly desalination technology that has garneredsignificantattention in recent years. Carbon materials, owing to theirexcellent properties, have become the preferredelectrode materials forCDI. Giventhe significantdifferences betweendifferent ions, ion-selective performance has emerged as acritical aspect ofCDI applications. However, comprehensivereviewson the selective ion separation capabilities of carbon materials for CDI remain scarce. This review examines the progress in developingcarbon materials forion-selective separation in CDI,focusing onregulatory mechanisms and representativematerials.Italso discusses the applications of selective CDI carbon materialsin areas such asheavy metal removal, nutrient recovery, seawater desalination resourcing, and water softening. Furthermore, the challenges and futureprospects for advancingcarbon materials in CDIare explored. This review aims toprovide theoretical insights and practical guidance for utilisingcarbon materials in wastewater treatment and resource recovery.
