A previous laboratory study [J. K. Schrodt, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. Suppl. 1 87, S128 (1990)] confirmed the broad bandwidth nature and high receive response of a piezoelectric copolymer material (PVF2/PVF3). The results of the previous study provided a technical framework for the future use of this material in hydrophone design and construction. The present talk is concerned with the performance of a broad bandwidth copolymer hydrophone array whose specifications were based on this technical framework. A comparison is also made between an air-backed cylindrical hydrophone with piezoelectric copolymer material bonded to the inside wall of the cylinder and the same hydrophone except with polymer (PVdF) material as the piezoelectric element. The effect of copolymer/polymer thickness and the use of different window materials for the cylinder wall are investigated. It is expected that the thicker copolymer material will increase the hydrophone sensitivity and also extend its usable frequency range relative to the PVdF material which is less reactive.
