Investigating the Relevance of ESP Materials in Indonesian Vocational Schools: The Voice of Pharmacy Students

A study on Taiwan's vocational senior high school teachers' teaching identity and teaching transformation when facing a new competency-based curriculum.

The competency of education is advocated in the 2023 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. UNESCO encourages countries to provide inclusive, equitable, competency education and lifelong learning opportunities for all. Starting from 2019, 12-Year-Basic-Education, a new curriculum, was fully implemented in Taiwan to conform to the competency education strategy. For the teachers on site, teachers' understanding of the new curriculum and teaching practice has a direct impact on the competency of the implementation of this new policy. The main purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between vocational senior high school teachers' competency-oriented teaching, teaching identity and teaching transformation regarding this new curriculum. In order to effectively expand teachers' understanding of competency-oriented teaching identity, this study put forward 6 hypothetical approaches based on the implicit theory of teaching transformation. The 747 valid questionnaires accounted for 97.1% of the total recovered questionnaires. The reliability and validity analyses, as well as overall model fitting analysis and research model validation were performed on these valid questionnaires. The results of the study showed: (1) With the background of Competency-oriented teaching, teachers' teaching attitude and teaching willingness has a positive impact on teaching identity; (2) teachers' teaching identity has a positive impact on teaching preparation, teaching practice, further study, three types of teaching transformation. In summary, three conclusions from this study were concluded on the aspects of teaching preparation, teaching practice and further study on practical competency-oriented teaching, teaching identity and teaching transformation in the educational field. Three conclusions were derived for the relationships among these six constructs: (1) Teachers with a "good attitude" and "strong willingness" to teach, a "high sense of identification" acceptance and full implement of "teaching preparation" are considered as teachers with a "foresight and a visionary predictive style"; (2) Teachers with a high sense of self-awareness who can fully practice "teaching practice" are teachers with a "pragmatic teaching by example style"; (3) Teachers with a "good attitude," a "strong willingness" to teach, a "high sense of identification" acceptance and who are able to fully practice "advanced research" are considered as teachers with an "empowerment-enhancing coaching style".

Using a Level-based RPG Educational Game to Enhance Students’ Knowledge of Mathematics

This study utilized RPG Maker MZ to develop a simulated mathematical educational game that enables learners to immerse in the digital game while also acquiring knowledge about all units in Mathematics 3A, such as radian measure, trigonometric function graphs, trigonometric angle sum and difference identities, superposition of sine and cosine functions, exponential function, logarithms and its laws, logarithmic function, and plane vector operations, inner products, and applications. The said mathematical educational game aims to increase students’ learning interests and assist them in achieving better learning efficiency. Ninety-three second-graders from a vocational senior high school participated in the study and were given questionnaires to fill out afterward. This study discovered that mathematical educational games enable students to not only go through a variety of situations and experiences but also improve their learning efficiency and their ability to think about the problems around them through virtual life situation-based games. This type of interaction can assist students in better understanding and mastering the flexible application of mathematical concepts and knowledge in a variety of life situations.

History and Cartography meet youth through Digital Technology

Through collaboration between the Onassis Foundation, the Historical Archive of the National Bank of Greece, and the Vocational Senior High School of Kamatero, an innovative digital project was developed that is both trendy and geared towards youth. This project showcases how a concept aimed at emphasizing the historical significance of the Capital of Greece inspired students to merge the disciplines of Computer Science and History, resulting in the creation of a 3D game on a popular platform. Additionally, this project demonstrates how Project-based learning can be achieved through collaborative and inquiry-based learning, real-world connections, initiative, and the satisfaction of creating something new. The impetus for the cooperation was the Panhellenic Student Competition of the Onassis Foundation, "Hack the Map: Imaginary Worlds." This competition invited schools to promote the cultural heritage of Greece, especially cartographic exhibits/evidence of the old days, through students' digital projects. The Historical Archive of the National Bank of Greece, which is a significant resource for studying Modern Greek History through primary sources, reached out to the Vocational Senior High School of Kamatero, located in the western sector of Athens, to work on a project. The school has an IT department, among other disciplines. In close collaboration, they developed a scenario that is about the civil war that occurred in Athens during the Interregnum period (October 1862-October 1863) after the dethronement of Greece's first king, Otto I. The scenario highlights the bloody events that took place between political factions in the city. In these conflicts, the implication of "Kyriakos," a dangerous leader of robbers, is a paradoxical historical event that stimulated the 2nd-grade Informatics students' imagination. Therefore, they created a 3D digital game entitled "Thieves and Policemen in the newly established Greek city-state: Iouniana." This presentation intends to demonstrate how the students' team of the Vocational School of Kamatero rebuilt Athenian monuments related to Kyriakos' action in a 3D environment; how they reconstructed the cartography of the capital's center during the second half of the 19th century based on these monuments and how they utilized digital resources (maps, photos, and texts) and books proposed by NBG Historical Archives; how a single player, via Kyriakos' persona, has to accomplish missions-battles and match parts of Athens' map of that era; and finally, how students narrated a historical event in a game constructed in Roblox platform inviting other young people to involve history knowledge.

Prevalence and associated factors of smoking among chinese adolescents: a school-based cross-sectional study

BackgroundShenzhen has made great efforts to address the tobacco epidemic in the past decade. This study aims to evaluate the current status of the tobacco epidemic among adolescent in Shenzhen, China.MethodsThe multi-stage random cluster sampling method was used in the school-based cross-sectional study in 2019 and a total of 7,423 junior and high school (both senior and vocational) students were recruited. Information on cigarette use was collected by the electronic questionnaire. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the associations between current cigarette use and associated factors. ORs with their 95% CIs were reported.ResultsThe prevalence of current cigarette use among adolescents was 2.3%, with boys (3.4%) significantly higher than girls (1.0%). Smoking rates in junior high schools, senior high schools, and vocational senior high schools were 1.0%, 2.7%, and 4.1%, respectively. The results of multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that gender, age, parental smoking, teachers smoking in schools, friends smoking, exposure to tobacco marketing, and misconceptions about cigarette use were associated factors for adolescent smoking behaviour.ConclusionsThe prevalence of current smoking was relatively low among adolescent in Shenzhen, China. Personal characteristics, family, and school were associated with current adolescent smokers.

Duolingo Mobile Application for English Listening Skill Improvement of Vocational School Students

Duolingo application in mobile assisted language learning can help students flexibly to learn English listening skills by its game-based features. Meanwhile, listening skill as one of significant language aspects for oral communication purpose is highly required for professional need by vocational senior high school. Therefore, this research was intended to find out the progress of students’ English listening skill in SMK Analis Kesehatan Nasional Surakarta using Duolingo and students’ perceptions toward the mobile application. This study used quantitative research with pre-experimental design and its data collection used pre-test, post-test, and close-end questionnaire. The findings show that scores of students’ pre-test and post-test presented significant improvement of students’ English listening skill. The average students’ pre-test score was 73.25 while the average students’ post-test score was 83.3. It was supported by students’ perception that 90% students gave positive perception to the usage of Duolingo mobile application in their English learning process.

The level of perceived efficacy from teachers to access AI-based teaching applications

The purpose of this study is to develop the ‘Teachers’ Efficacy Perceptions of the AI-based Teaching Applications (TEP-AITA) scale’ and to describe the analysis of the background variables and the differences between six factors in the application of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) teaching efficacy perceptions questionnaire. In total, 714 vocational senior high school teachers participated in random and cluster sampling in Taiwan. The results showed that the internal consistency reliability of the measure was .988 and that the reliability of the six subscales was .975, .971, .981, .976, .972, and .967. The results found that TEP-AITA scale included ‘Resource support’, ‘Innovative teaching’, ‘Cross-disciplinary’, ‘Professional learning’, ‘Learner demand’, and ‘Self-reflection’. ‘Cross-disciplinary’ and ‘Learner demand’ were highly rated, while ’Resource support’ was low. This study analyzed the differences in the perceived efficacy for AI-based teaching applications among teachers according to their background variables, such as their gender, current position, school attributes, teachers’ seniority, and application AI teaching experience. The research results on teacher background factors and the six factors of the TEP-AITA scale could be provided to education units for the active promotion of AI information technology teaching and training.

READABILITY LEVEL OF READING TEXTS IN THE ENGLISH TEXTBOOK “ENGLISH IN MIND” FOR TENTH GRADE STUDENTS AT SMKN 3 KOTA BENGKULU

The objective of the research is to find out the readability level of the texts in English textbook based on Fog Index (FI). This research was categorized as descriptive quantitative research. The object of this research was reading materials English textbook entitled English in Mind Second Edition by Cambridge University Press for tenth grade of Vocational Senior High School. FOG index was used to determine the readability level of the texts based on the average number of sentences and hard words (polysillabic). The finding of this research revealed that the readability of the texts in English in Mind second edition textbook by Cambridge University was easy based on FOG Index (FI) analysis result. Based on FOG Index (FI) analysis result, the percentage of level of readability of English in Mind textbook showed that there were 26 (68%) of texts were easy and 12 (32%) of texts were moderate. Overall, the readability of the texts in English in Mind second edition textbook by Cambridge University was dominantly easy for grade tenth of SMKN 3 Kota Bengkulu. It was suggested for the teachers or the readers to understand readability level of reading materials and know whether the reading materials given to their students are appropriate for them or not.

Deep learning course development and evaluation of artificial intelligence in vocational senior high schools.

This study aimed to develop cross-domain deep learning courses of artificial intelligence in vocational senior high schools and explore its impact on students’ learning effects. It initially adopted a literature review to develop a cross-domain SPOC-AIoT Course with SPOC (small private online courses) and the Double Diamond 4D model in vocational senior high schools. Afterward, it adopted participatory action research (PAR) and a questionnaire survey and conducted analyses on the various aspects of the technology acceptance model by SmartPLS. Further, this study explored the impact on the effects of deep learning and knowledge-ability learning of artificial intelligence after 16 weeks of course teaching among 36 Grade I students from the electrical and electronic group of a vocational senior high school. This study revealed that (1) the four stages of the SPOC-AIoT Teaching Mode of the Double Diamond 4D model may effectively guide students to learn AIoT knowledge and skills. (2) Based on the technology acceptance model, the analysis of learning and participation in SmartPLS indicated that this model conformed to the academic fitness requirements of the overall model. (3) After learning with the SPOC-AIoT Teaching Mode, the learning effects of students in AIoT have been significantly improved to a positive aspect. Finally, some suggestions were put forward to promote the development of the SPOC-AIoT Teaching Mode Course in the future.

Group-based trajectory model to analyze the growth of students’ academic performance: a longitudinal investigation at one Taiwanese high school

This study investigated the growth trajectory of academic achievement in Math and English among 519 students in a vocational senior high school in Taiwan. Covering the complete individual learning profile, our dataset included pre-enrollment variables, periodic test scores, and college entrance examination scores. We employed a group-based trajectory model that identified three homogenous subgroups with distinct trajectories of academic achievement in Math and English and demonstrated baseline predictive factors associated with these trajectories as well as relationships between different trajectories and students’ college entrance examination scores. Our analysis contributes to the literature in two ways. First, this study demonstrates that when school practices focus on improving or remediating the performance of students in the low-achievement group, the obvious decrease in performance of those in the middle is ignored. Such finding indicates the need for inclusive or specialized practices that enhance the performance of students in all groups. Second, our analysis reveals that pre-enrollment academic preparation appears to be a strong predictor of later academic performance as noted through the reproduction of pre-enrollment academic performance in students’ college entrance examination scores. Therefore, upon enrollment, schools should start interventions that reflect the needs of different groups of students.

Characteristics and Associated Factors of E-cigarette Use Among Secondary School Students - 6 PLADs in China, 2021.

What is already known about this topic?Previous studies on electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use in China among secondary school students have provided information on the awareness and usage of e-cigarettes.What is added by this report?This study not only described e-cigarette usage rates, but also explored the characteristics of e-cigarette users’ behavior and factors associated with the current use of e-cigarettes among secondary school students.What are the implications for public health practice?E-cigarette use among secondary school students, especially among vocational senior high school students, requires more attention. Although some policies have been developed to protect youths from the harmful effects of e-cigarettes, enforcement of these policies needs to be strengthened.

Upaya Peningkatan Semangat Belajar Siswa Materi Lingkungan Hidup dengan Model PjBL Berbantuan Media Pembelajaran Inovatif pada Jurusan Teknik Otomotif

Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) is one of the subjects that is only given in class X in the independent curriculum for Vocational Senior High School (SMK) students. Based on the results of observations, the low enthusiasm for IPAS subjects is because IPAS is a complex subject that combines material from biology, physics, chemistry, and social science so that there is a lot of theory to understand, while vocational schools are expected to have a lot of practical learning so that it is boring for students. Project-based learning (PjBL) is assumed to be very suitable as an implementation solution and is also very dominant in vocational-based schools. The study aimed to determine the increase in enthusiasm for studying science and technology in class X majoring in automotive engineering at SMK Takhassus Wonosobo. The subjects in this classroom action research were 40 students majoring in automotive engineering in environmental matters. The data collection method is in the form of observation sheets and documentation. Based on the empirical data that has been obtained through this research, it shows that before the action the data on students' learning enthusiasm reached 47.50 with the Less Enthusiastic (MB) criteria. After the action was held in cycle I, it increased to the level of 53.75 which also met the criteria for Less Enthusiastic (KB) but these results had not yet reached an indicator of success so the researchers held a follow-up cycle where students' enthusiasm for learning reached 62.50 or with the criteria Enthusiastic (B). Therefore, PjBL learning assisted by innovative media has succeeded in increasing the enthusiasm for learning science and science in class X majoring in automotive engineering, SMK Takhassus Wonosobo

Coping with Access Difficulties and Absenteeism through Data Visualization: A Case Study from a Rural Vocational School in Northern Greece

Absenteeism and early school leaving (ESL) constitute two main problems in education with a significant impact on adolescents’ life. Early leavers from education and training may face considerable difficulties in the labor market later as adults. Motivated by the necessity of minimizing this phenomenon, we developed a novel application that uses big data, generated from a student attendance management system in a vocational senior high school in Greece. This application first automatically conducts data preprocessing and data transformation and saves the processed data on a cloud data warehouse. Then, an online analytical processing (OLAP) analysis is performed, resulting in a real-time visualization that provides a variety of different graphs. In this study, we demonstrate the need for real-time visualization of the analyzed data. Such a type of presentation provides information on the spot regarding potential early leavers’ behavior, helping school administrators gain time for prompt and effective actions. Through the data processing and analysis, the application provides instructors with constant information, in addition to those acquired by the formal student attendance management systems. Our research provides indicative evidence in favor of the use of such applications, as by adequately reacting to the observed patterns in real-time, we observed a significant decrease in students’ unnecessary absences and a reduction of the ELS phenomenon in a three-year school period.

The Effect of Practical Experience, Knowledge of Job Opportunities, Teacher Professionalism and Work Motivation on Work Readiness

The main problem faced by the education world is the low employment level for graduates of Vocational Senior High Schools (SMK). Ideally, there should be 80% to 85% graduates that should be directly admitted to the work forces, but up till now this percentage is approximately only 61%. The article analyze how the effect of Practical Experience, Knowledge of Job Opportunities, Teacher Professionalism and Work Motivation on Work Readiness at Vocational High School (SMK) Semarang Automotive mechanical expertise program. The research sample was taken using cluster proportional random sampling. Data were collected by questionnaires and documentation. Based on a preliminary test on grade XII students of Mechanical Automotive of SMK found that there were 36 valid problems and 18 invalid ones in the questionnaires. These problems were then refined and reduced proportionally to only 40 according to the existing sub-factors. After being e-tested the instrument produced a validity score higher that the table r (0.334). It meant that the instrument was valid and could be used as an appropriate tool for tests. The data were analyzed using percentage-descriptive analyses. The total effect of experiences in practices on the readiness of the students to enter the existing wok force was 2%, the total effect of students’ knowledge about employment was 3.04% and the total effect of teachers’ professionalism was 2.63%. Based on the above findings, it can be concluded that there were effects of experiences in academic practices, of students’ knowledge about the existing employment, of teacher professionalism and of students’ motivations for work on readiness to enter the work forces. Collectively, these four factors contributed 30.6% of the total effect, while the remaining 60.4% of the total effect was due to by some other factors not investigated in this research.

Pelatihan Bahasa Asing di SMKN 1 Temon Kulonprogo

This community service was conducted by considering Kulonprogo Regency’s development. Massive physical development in Kulonprogo Regency should be balanced with the human resources improvement. Foreign languages skill was chosen to be improved because Kulonprogo Regency’s community will be intensively interact with foreigners due to the existence of new airport (New Yogyakarta International Airport). Foreign languages training focused on the English, Korean and Japanese was given to the students of Vocational Senior High School in Temon (SMK N 1 Temon) which has specialty in marine and sailing. Teaching materials were prepared by conducting an interview with the teachers to find the need based on the curricullum competency. Based on the findings, community service team composed and compiled teaching materials. The team also delivered the materials through classroom teaching in several classes of SMK N 1 Temon. Through this program, foreign languages training on English, Korean and Japanese has been optimally received by SMK N 1 Temon students.

Smoking Behavior Among Secondary School Students - China, 2021.

What is already known about this topic?In 2019, China CDC conducted the National Youth Tobacco Survey among secondary school students, and the prevalence rates of ever, current, and frequent smoking were 17.9%, 5.9%, and 1.8%, respectively.What is added by this report?The prevalence rate of cigarette use in males decreased largely from 2019 to 2021 in China, while it increased in 18 provincial-level administrative divisions (PLADs) for females. The tobacco control situation remains challenging among vocational senior high school (VSHS) students. Significant geographical disparities existed in cigarette use.What are the implications for public health practice?Targeted tobacco control policies aimed at VSHS students are needed, specifically those PLADs with higher smoking rates. Additionally, close attention should be paid to female smokers.

THE QUESTIONS USED BY THE NON-ENGLISH TEACHERS AND THE STUDENTS' RESPONSES

This study addresses three major problems: (1) Which type(s) of questions are asked by the teachers to the students at Tunas Harapan Vocational senior High School of Pati? (2)What levels of questions are related in those types of questions? (3)How effective are the questions given by the teachers? The qualitative approach was used to explore the implementation of teachers’ questions. Afterwards, the students’ responses were analysed to describe the interaction between them and teachers. The subjects of this study were the Math, Chemistry and welding teachers and the machine department students. Each teacher was recorded during the teaching and learning process. The result shows that they more frequently used the divergent questions to encourage students to give responses and require students to engange in higher level cognition. They dominantly used lower levels of cognition such as understanding and applying. Referring to the students’ responses it could be categorized that the questions given by the teachers were effective for the students since more than 50% of the students answered “yes” from the questionnaire given, supported with the rubric of NYSUT’s Teacher Practice.

The Relationship between Academic Dishonesty, Ethical Attitude and Ethical Climate: The Evidence from Taiwan

Academic dishonesty has become a global issue widely studied in many countries. Plagiarism using the Internet is prevalent across the world and seems to be increasing, affecting the reputation of schools and even countries. On the basis of the social cognitive theory and the theory of planned behavior, this study explored the relationship between ethical attitude and academic dishonesty, and we focused on the moderating effect of ethical climate on the relationship. A survey of 1271 students (745 female students, 526 male students; mean age = 16.38 years, SD = 0.76) from 31 senior high schools in Taiwan was conducted and analyzed using hierarchical regression by SPSS 26 to test the hypotheses of this study. The result shows that: (1) Compared with male students, female students had a more positive attitude towards ethical attitude and showed less academic dishonesty. Compared with general senior high school students, vocational senior high school students showed a more positive ethical attitude and a positive ethical climate; (2) ethical attitude was negatively related to academic dishonesty; (3) high ethical climate strengthened the negative relationship between ethical attitude and academic dishonesty. In addition, the theoretical implications, practical implications, and directions for future research are also discussed in this article. The result of the study can be a credible reference for educational researchers and educational administrative systems, when planning ethical-related courses or educational policies for high schools with more emphasis on academic dishonesty and other relevant issues.

USAHA MENINGKATKAN MANAJEMEN PEMBIAYAAN PENDIDIKAN OLEH KEPALA SEKOLAH (Studi Deskriptif kualitatif di SMKN 2 Bengkulu Tengah)

The objective of this reseach is to describe the effort to increase educational financing management by principal at Vocational Senior High School Number 2 Central of Bengkulu. The formulation of specific objectives are efforts to increase the planning, coordinating, actuating, controlling, and accounting educational financing management. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitatif. The data for this study were obtained from interview, observation, and documentation.The data analysis technique used in this study was desctiptive- qualitative.The result of this reseach shows that the efforts to increase educational financing management by headmaster at Vocational Senior High School number 2 Central of Bengkulu was implemented through planning, coordinating, actuating, controlling, and accounting.

AN ANALYSIS OF SPEECH ACTS IN THE STUDENT’S TEXTBOOK AT THE SENIOR VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

The current research objectives were to analyse the eleventh grade students’ textbook in the Senior Vocational High School publishes by the Indonesian Ministry of National Education based on the 2013 Curriculum. The research problems were focused on the speech acts’ social functions, linguistic features, and language elements. The research was designed in a qualitative approach. Data were collected through document analysis method. Data were analysed descriptively by classifying the speech acts’ social functions, linguistic features, and language elements. The research was delimited on the verbal acts or speech acts, focusing on their social functions, linguistic structures, and language features as outlined in the 2013 Curriculum (Kemdikbud 2016). The three verbal learning focus assisted students in improving their communicative competence in English. The research findings are, firstly, there were four speech act types found, namely directive, assertive, expressive, and commissive acts. The speech acts’ social functions were ordering, asking, telling, advising, praying, stating, explaining, welcoming, thanking, apologizing, offering and refusing. Secondly, the speech acts’ linguistic features designed were imperative, interrogative, and declarative sentences. Thirdly, the speech acts’ language elements specifically grammatical rules used were simple present tense, simple past tense, present continuous tense, present perfect tense, and past continuous tense.
