Design and Implementation of i-lnhs: A Learning Management System for Lananpin National High School

Background/ Objectives: The use of technology such as Learning Management System (LMS) is helpful during the pandemic to enforce distance learning in public schools in the Philippines. The Department of Education (DepEd) introduced various formats and platforms to teachers to cope with the situation mentioned and to attain continuous learning amidst any circumstances. However, in some cases like in Lananpin National High School (LNHS) which used to implement traditional method, modernization without consideration of technological acceptability issues has reduced the influence of e-learning and the desired academic achievement. In this regard, the researchers conducted this study to find out the level of acceptability and usability of i-lnhs; a learning management system for Lananpin National High School using an e-learning platform, Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment (Moodle), to address the existing learning gaps. The objective of this research is to examine the implementation of i-lnhs to help the teachers and students facilitate learning and easily monitor students’ progress. Methods: This study used a descriptive and developmental research design. A questionnaire survey was used to assess teacher and student acceptance in implementation, content validity, and technological acceptability. Respondents were purposively chosen; 11 senior high school teachers and 40 senior high students. Data was obtained using Google Forms and was analyzed thereafter. Findings: The result showed that the implementation of i-lnhs in terms of functions and capability requirements, user interface and design, content validity, technical quality, and usability were acceptable to teachers and students. Therefore, the use of this technology could address the gaps of distance learning and the skepticism of teachers and students to adapt shift in learning methodology. SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH TEACHERS’ PUNCTUALITY, ATTENDANCE AND STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

This study sought to determine the Senior High School English teachers’ teaching practices in terms of punctuality, attendance and its relationship to students’ academic performance. Specifically, it determined the Senior High School English Teachers’ level of punctuality and attendance; the Senior High School Students’ level of academic performance in English; and the significant relationships of the teachers’ level of punctuality and attendance and their Senior High students’ level of performance in English. The study used the descriptive-correlational survey method. The respondents of the study were the twenty four (24) teachers of the twelve (12) senior high schools of Maguindanao, Philippines. There were two (2) Senior High English teachers that were chosen randomly from each senior high schools of Maguindanao. It has a total of twenty-four (24) Senior High English Teachers. In every teacher, there are 10 senior high school students chosen randomly with a total of two hundred forty (240) senior high school students. The immediate supervisors of the teachers from the twelve (12) secondary schools answered the research problem number 1, while the final grades in English of the two hundred forty (240) senior high students were taken from their English teachers to answer the research problem number 2. The respondents of this study were chosen randomly using lottery. Pearson’s Product - Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to determine the significant relationship of the level of punctuality and attendance of the English teachers to the students’ level of academic performance. Based on the findings of the study, it is concluded that the Senior High School English Teachers’ level of teaching practices is influenced by their punctuality and attendance. It further concluded that teachers’ punctuality and attendance contributed to students’ level of academic performance in English.

The Role of Self-Esteem and Perceived Parental Mediation in Cyberbullying

When access to information on the internet is expected to support the growth to adulthood, cyberbullying is instead becoming a threat to adolescents' psychological well-being. Parental mediation and self-esteem are considered as protective factors to youngsters from online risk. The present study examines whether self-esteem mediates the relationship between perceived parental mediation and cyberbullying. The study participants were 351 senior high school social students in Yogyakarta who are media and internet users. The data were collected using the Cyberbullying Scale (Cronbach’ α = 0.784), Self-Esteem Scale (Cronbach’ α = 0.766), and Perceived Parental Mediation Scale (Cronbach’ α = 0.656). Analysis using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) showed that the proposed model was reached the goodness-of-fit ( = 53.711; df = 18; p = 0.001; RMSEA = 0.075; GFI= 0.964; CFI= 0.923). This study concluded that self-esteem partially mediated parental mediation and cyberbullying, with an indirect effect = -0.047 (p = 0.024; p<0.05). Self-esteem as the cognitive-personality factor and optimal parental mediation as environmental factors were considered to prevent adolescent cyberbullying. Therefore, we would recommend practitioners of educational, social, and clinical psychology to take the opportunity to involve self-esteem and parental mediation factors in intervention program design.

The Role of Parents in Increasing Economic Learning Motivation during Pandemic Period for Senior High School Students

This research was conducted based on the results of researchers' observations about the role of parents in increasing children's economic learning motivation during the pandemic for senior high school level students in Bajulan Village, Loceret District, Nganjuk Regency. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of parents in increasing motivation to learn economics during the pandemic for senior high school education level students. The researcher used a qualitative approach with field research methods, especially descriptive types with the research subjects were parents and high school students who took economics subjects. The research was carried out using observation, interview and documentation techniques. The results showed that the role of parents in increasing children's learning motivation were 1) parents as children's facilitators, the form of facilities provided by parents to students were providing Wi-Fi, cellphones, study tables and money allocated for internet quotas, 2) parents as motivators for students, the form of motivation given by parents to students in the form of advice and warnings, and 3) parents as guide, the form of guidance given by parents to students was role model. Based on data analysis, it can be concluded that the role of parents in increasing motivation to learn economics is quite good. Students’ Perception in Instagram-Assisted Vocabulary Learning with Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy

The objective of this research was to investigate senior high students' perception on learning survival vocabularies through Instagram-assisted Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy. This research provides two research questions: (1)In what ways Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy and Instagram facilitate students in learning vocabulary? (2)What is the students’ responds toward the VSS project with Instagram assisted? The study was conducted by using classroom action research as the research design. The participants of this study were the senior high school students majoring social program in Karawang. The instruments used in this study were semi-structure interview for students, reflective journal and students’ VSS chart. The findings of this study found three main themes regarding to the students’ perception on Instagram-assisted Vocabulary Self-collection Strategy: (1)Instagram-assisted Vocabulary Self-collection Strategy Enhance Students’ Vocabulary, (2)Instagram-assisted Vocabulary Self-collection Strategy help Students’ Comprehension on Vocabulary, (3)The Challenges of Vocabulary Self-collection Strategy in learning vocabulary. The result implies students can consider taking some text from quotes that have been posted on Instagram as learning media outside of school. Sexual Harassment on Senior Highschool Female Students

This research aims to determine sexual harassment on senior high school female students. The subjects of this research were 40 senior high school female students in Purwokerto, Banyumas, Central Java, as many as 40 people were selected using random sampling. Analysis of the data used is a descriptive analysis of the test categories through the help of SPSS 20.00 for windows. The results of the analysis show a range score of 109, a minimum score of 55, a maximum score of 164, a mean score of 98.37, a standard deviation score of 27.26 and a variant score of 743.112. Based on the results obtained from the data collection, the category of subjects of sexual harassment on senior high school female students in Purwokerto was very high at 1 subject or 2.5%, high at 10 subjects or 25%, medium at 18 subjects or 45%, low at 7 subjects or 17.5% and very low by 4 subjects or 10%.

Developing and Creating Board Game as a Media to Learn English Vocabulary for Senior High Student

Students have a general problem to even start learning the English language. Through the game, student will only feel that they’re playing games and not studying, increasing the willingness of someone to learn more by averting their mindset to think that they are playing instead of studying. The game will be created in a form of a board game, the reason is the game is seen as more a friendly and more acceptable by more people. The objective of this research is to design a board game helping student to increase their English proficiency in a friendlier, easier, and enjoyable manner. The board game was tested to 40 students on high school by letting them play it 10 times in different day each time they play, and then filling the questionnaire. The questionnaire then will be processed in SPSS software to conclude the result of the research. This research will produce an English learning educational board game which will improve their English proficiency in a fun and cooperative way (togetherness).

Perception on Multiple Choice Questions: Its Challenges and Implication Among Grade 12 Senior High Students of Mindanao State University-Sulu

This study investigated the perception on Multiple Choice Questions: Its challenges and implications among Grade 12 Senior High Students of Mindanao State University-Sulu. Descriptive survey method was used in this study. Random sampling was used to select 100 students, 50 from GAS strand and 50 from STEM strand Grade 12 Senior high school students. The researcher prepared a survey questionnaire to obtain the necessary data.Mean was used to analyze the perceived challenges and implication while an independent T-test sample was used to test the hypotheses at alpha level of 0.05.The following were the highlight of the study: Multiple Choice Questions is a test format only used as an assessment tool during their Quarterly Examinations and it was revealed that MCQ is challenging foremost due to the need to answer critically under time pressure. Consequently, they need to manage their time in order to answer every subject. The challenge of MCQ also lies in the difficulty of the subject Also, the result revealed the implications of MCQ tends to urge students to answer each subject at limited time pressure students that they experience test anxiety. Meanwhile, there is a need to look into the level of difficulty of the subject matter which requires student rigorous preparation before exam. More so, MCQ develop student’s analysis on problem solving which provides them a real time experience of taking major exams and develop time management in studying and strategies in answering as it encourages them to answer with persistence and resilience.The study recommended that the school administration should encourage the applicability of this test format to other colleges in the institution that require licensure examination, Setting programs and intervention for the improvements of this endeavour and Creating more research studies.

A Study of Tactics of Cultivating Senior High Students’ Critical Thinking Skills of English Writing Based on the Production-oriented Approach

As an embodiment of the comprehensive language competence, writing is also an effective way of promoting students’ critical thinking ability, and the writing process involves not only language usage but critical analysis as well. In traditional English classes, however, the cultivation of critical thinking skills is sometimes overlooked and the teaching of English writing pays more attention to the usage of grammar or lexical knowledge, in other words. A lot of students just write for high scores by applying flowery language without logicality or internal essay structure, and writing teaching is always one of the difficulties in English classes. In this case, in order to enhance senior high school students’ English writing ability, arouse their English writing interests and train their critical thinking skills in the meantime, in this paper, the author sets the production-oriented approach as the theoretical basis, applying it to English writing classes and discussing feasible teaching strategies from three aspects: preparation for English writing production, process of English writing production and assessment of English writing production, aiming at providing a guidance or some new ideas for English writing teaching in Chinese senior high schools.

STEM Students' Engagement in Horizontal Transfer from Calculus to Physics and their Difficulties

Majority of science students are facing different problems in applying their calculus knowledge to physics courses. Researchers started to develop an integrated approach to address this problem however, many schools are still teaching calculus and physics as two separate subjects. Moreover, there has been no significant research on senior high school students' transfer of learning and difficulties in calculus-based physics subjects. It is crucial because this is when the students first experience applying calculus in a physics context. Hence, the study investigated the engagement of senior high school STEM students to horizontal transfer from Basic Calculus to General Physics subjects and the difficulties they experience in solving calculus-based-physics problems. A correlational study research design was employed to explore the relationship between the students’ physics and calculus performance using a physics worksheet. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were also employed to determine the difficulties of the students in calculus-based-physics problems. The Pearson correlation revealed that there is a significant positive correlation between the students’ physics and calculus performance. Although this could not serve as strong evidence of transfer, this strong correlation implies that senior high school STEM students were able to construct the similarities between the calculus-based physics problems and their calculus schema. As revealed in the questionnaire and the students’ responses in the worksheet and interview, students have difficulty in solving calculus-based physics problems in terms of identifying the variable that needs to be integrated, setting-up the limits of integration, evaluating the limits of integral, and identifying the appropriate rules of integration and applying it in solving the physics problem. These difficulties are rooted in the fact that students have little experience applying calculus in word problems, especially in the physics context.

Exploring Motives and Types of Bullying in Young Adults: Cases From China

Bullying issues occur among adolescents and young adults globally, however, it does not get enough scholarly attention in mainland China (Zhou et al., 2013). This article aims to explore the motives and types of bullying through two cases: one in a high school setting, and the other in a college/university campus in the mid-eastern area of China. Participants included 315 senior high sophomores and 265 freshmen university students. Students completed a questionnaire reporting their bullying experience as witness, victim, or/and perpetrator, as well as their definition of bullying behaviors. 258(81.90%) senior high and 239(90.18%) undergraduate participants had witnessed bullying behaviors before. While 199(63.18%) senior high and 175(66.10%) undergraduate participants reported as bullying victims. The most-reported bullying behavior was verbal bullying, most bullying incidents happened in a classroom, and were inflicted by their peers. Moreover, the researchers explored the motives behind the bullying behavior. The findings help deepen our understanding of bullying epidemics in China educational settings and have implications on preventing the problems and improving the campus climate.

Teacher Talk: Student’s Perception and Expectation

Teacher talk undoubtedly makes a certain factor whether the class will meet objectives of teaching and learning process or not. This research investigated (1) students’ perception towards teacher talk that happened during the teaching and learning process, and (2) students’ ideal expectations about their English teacher. This was a descriptive qualitative research. One English teacher and one class of first year senior high students were engaged in the research. The data of this research were collected from transcribed-classroom video recording and interview to some students. The results indicated that (1) students’ perception towards teaching style, such as teaching method, motivating, giving feedback were almost negative and (2) students’ ideal expectations that an English teacher should be more effective, efficient interactive and creative for creating more interesting classroom atmosphere. Prediction of addiction based on procrastination, distress tolerance, and perceived competence in senior high school girl students

BACKGROUND: Transitional stages of life are one of the most dangerous times for more vulnerability to drug abuse. The purpose of this study was to predict addiction based on procrastination, distress tolerance, and perceived competence in senior high school girl students. METHODS: The method of study was descriptive and correlational. The population of this study consisted of all senior high school girl students of Divandarreh, Iran, during the academic year of 2018-2019. Among them, 266 students were included in the study using multi-stage cluster sampling. The Iranian Addiction Potential Scale (IAPS), Procrastination Scale, Distress Tolerance Scale (DTS), and Perceived Competence Scale for Children (PCSC) were used for data collection. Data were analyzed by Pearson correlation and multiple regression analysis. RESULTS: There was a significant positive correlation between addiction and negligence (P 0.010). Regression analysis revealed that 21% of the variance of addiction tendency could be explained by procrastination, distress tolerance, and perceived competence. CONCLUSION: According to the findings of this study, it is necessary to emphasize on these psychological characteristics in educational programs and prevention and treatment of addiction in schools.

The Effect of Teacher’s Code Switching on Vocabulary Acquisition of Senior High School Students: EFL Learners

This research is aimed at finding and describing the effect of teacher’s code-switching on vocabulary acquisition of senior high students: EFL Learners the eleven grade students at MAN 2 LEBAK in the academic year of 2020/2021. This research was conducted from January to February 2021. This research was classified as a pre-experimental study. It involved 25 students from one class. The pre-test was given to the participants before the treatment and the post-test was given after the treatment. The data of the pre-test and post- test of the participants were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. After the data were tested and found the hypothesis (H 1 ) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H 0 ) was rejected. The result of the research shows that the difference in the mean score between the students’ score pre-test and post-test. the score was 7,2, which obtained in the degree of freedom (df) of 23, with the degree of significance 5%, it gained score 1,71387. Which means the t-observation was higher than t-table. It showed that teacher’s code-switching on Students’ vocabulary acquisition is effective.

Enhancing Students’ Critical Thinking Skills through Problem Based Learning Integrated with Mindmapping

The critical thinking skills of class 10th from senior high school Banda Aceh students have not been trained in the learning process, students are not given the opportunity to analyze a problem, identify, conclude or come up with new ideas or an action on a problem. In fact, research shows that the learning process of biology in schools does not encourage students to think critically, thus affecting low learning outcomes. The research objective was to determine the increase in critical thinking skills in class 10th skills on the concept of environmental pollution and knowing the differences in critical thinking skills of class 10th students on the concept of environmental pollution in the experimental and control class. Data were collected from March to April 2019. The approach of this research is to use a quantitative, evaluation research type, the method used is quasi-experimental, with a factorial design group pre-test post-test. The sample in this study amounted to 253 students from two high schools in Banda Aceh. Essay questions are used to measure students' critical thinking skills. The data analysis used ANCOVA at a significant level of 0.05. Hypothesis test results show the value of ρ α, 0.00 0.05. The conclusion of this study is that the application of the PBL integrated with the mindmap can improve students' critical thinking skills. There are differences in students' critical thinking skills using integrated mindmapping PBL, PBL, mindmapping, and conventional.

Resumption of School amid the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Rapid Assessment of Knowledge, Attitudes, and Preventive Practices among Final-Year Senior High Students at a Technical Institute in Ghana

Background. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about significant challenges to Ghana’s education system, leading to the closure of schools for months. On 31 May 2020, the government of Ghana took a bold decision based on expert advice to reopen schools for final-year students amid the COVID-19 pandemic. However, data for students’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards COVID-19 are limited. We sought to investigate students’ level of knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards COVID-19 at Tamale Technical Institute, Ghana. Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 175 final-year students from June to August 2020. A validated questionnaire adapted from previous studies was distributed to the students in their various classes by the researchers. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, and multivariate logistic regression. All analyses were significant at a p value of less than 0.05. Results. The mean age of the study participants was 21.1 years (SD = 2.67), with more males (72.0%) than females participating in the study. The majority (69.7%) of the students trust traditional media sources, i.e., television and radio to receive COVID-19-related information. Awareness about COVID-19 was high (98.3%), and in total, 62.9% (n = 110) had good knowledge, 58.3% (n = 102) had positive attitudes, and 54.9% (n = 96) had good practices towards COVID-19. Factors associated with knowledge were receiving education on COVID-19 (AOR = 0.23; 95% CI: 0.01, 0.55) and mother level of education (AOR = 0.13; 95% CI: 0.02, 0.66). Positive attitudes towards COVID-19 were 63% less likely among students who did not receive education on COVID-19 (AOR = 0.37; 95% CI: 0.15, 0.90). Students who received education on COVID-19 exhibited good practice towards COVID-19 than students who did not receive education on COVID-19 (p = 0.014). Conclusion. Final-year students of Tamale Technical Institute possess good knowledge, attitudes, and practices toward COVID-19. Our findings demonstrate the significant role of health education in improving students’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards COVID-19. We recommend continuous and targeted health education to mitigate the widespread misconceptions about COVID-19 through the use of traditional media such as television and radio.

Constructivist Learning Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic: Investigating Students’ Perceptions of Biology Self-Learning Modules

Modes of teaching and learning have had to rapidly shift amid the COVID-19 pandemic. As an emergency response, students from Philippine public schools were provided learning modules based on a minimized list of essential learning competencies in Biology. Using a cross-sectional survey method, we investigated students’ perceptions of the Biology self-learning modules (BSLM) that were designed in print and digitized formats according to a constructivist learning approach. Senior high school STEM students from grades 11 (n = 117) and 12 (n = 104) participated in a survey using a 3-point Likert-scale questionnaire uploaded online through Google Forms. The survey results indicate that majority of the students perceived the modules positively, suggesting that aspects of the modules that were salient to students corresponded to essential elements of constructivist pedagogies. However, during interviews, students reported several difficulties in learning with BSLM as it was constrained by, to name a few, the use of unfamiliar words, lack of access to supporting resources, slow internet connection, and time constraints. To address these problems, teachers reported that they gave deadline extensions, complemented modules with other channels of support, and used online and offline platforms for reaching out to students to answer their queries and plan out their schedule for the week. The findings across the data sources point to the complex demands of emergency distance education that teachers, as curriculum designers and enactors, need to bear in mind in order to craft productive pedagogies, constructivist or otherwise, during this unprecedented time.

This research studies the impact of the implementation of the Jigsaw technique with a musical background to comprehend reading at Senior high school in Sidrap, Indonesia. This research uses a quasi-experimental method to answer the question, "is the use of Jigsaw with a musical background as a technique able to improve the reading comprehension of senior high students at senior high school? This research also uses a random sampling technique to select the sample in the experimental and control class. The data is analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The result of the calculation of students' scores from the post-test indicates that there is a significant improvement in students' comprehension achievement before and after learning reading by using the Jigsaw technique with background music. The result of this research finally shows that the use of the Jigsaw technique with background music improves the reading comprehension of the eleventh-grade students of senior high school in Sidrap, Indonesia. It is proved by the students' comprehension in the reading text that was 42.3 in their pre-test, but increasing in the post-test by mean score was 63.35. It means that the alternative hypothesis is accepted, which the t-test value is more significant than the t-table value. In the post-test, the t-test value is 11.92, while the t-table value is 2.042. Based on the result of data analysis, the writer concludes that using the Jigsaw technique with background music is useful to improve the reading comprehension of the student in reading text.

The technological knowledge and the content knowledge on acid-base concepts of senior high school STEM students

The purpose of this study is to assess the levels of Technological Knowledge and Content Knowledge on Acid-Base Concepts and relationship between the Technological Knowledge and Content Knowledge on Acid-Base Concepts among the Senior High School STEM students in Iligan City. The study utilized two (2) Public High Schools in Iligan City schools division that offer STEM Strand. The respondents are the Senior High School STEM students that are taking up a Chemistry subject in the School Year 2018-2019. Questionnaires for Technological Knowledge and Content Knowledge on Acid-Base concepts were used. The collected data were analyzed using mean, frequency distribution, percentage, p-test, t-test, pearson correlation and levene’s test. The level of Technological Knowledge of Grade 11 STEM students in Iligan City National High School is very good. The level of Technological Knowledge of Grade 12 STEM students is also very good. The level of Technological Knowledge of Senior High School STEM students in Iligan City National High School is very good. The level of Content Knowledge on Acid- Base Concepts of Grade 11 students in Iligan City National High School is satisfactory. On the other hand, the result shows that the level of Content Knowledge on Acid- Base Concepts of Grade 12 STEM students one the same school is poor. Moreover, the level of Content Knowledge on Acid- Base Concepts of Senior High School STEM students in Iligan City National High School is poor. The level of Content Knowledge on Acid- Base Concepts of Senior High School STEM students in Iligan City East National High School is poor. The result shows that the difference and relationship of the technological knowledge and the content knowledge of Senior High School STEM students in Iligan City is not significant. Since the level of Technological Knowledge of the students were very good, teachers may make use the available technologies in teaching Acid- Base Concepts. Future researchers may utilize a larger population like different Schools Division in this region to validate this findings.
