W czasie wiersza. "Posłańcy" Stanisława Grochowiaka

This paper – presenting a close reading of Stanisław Grochowiak’s poem Posłańcy [The Messengers] – proposes reflections on the “time of the poem”. It deals with the issue of experiencing different temporalities while reading (when and where you are while experiencing written words; what is the relationship between the reader's "real" and "fictional" – immersed in the process of reading – lives), and proposes a depiction of pace moderations in the analyzed work – of its own, differential dynamics. The problem of time and velocity is the starting point for a hermeneutic interpretation, or rather hermeneutic exercises (inspired by Raymond Queneau's Exercises in Style): a conceptual, anthropological and semiotic reading experiment carried out on Grochowiak's poem. This essay is an attempt to pave a few paths for understanding The Messengers and their messages. Following in the footsteps of the title characters (with the help of associations and seemingly trivial observations) becomes a cognitive and imaginative adventure, a revolve around an ineffable, dark mystery of the poem (perhaps of all poems and their messengers).

THE APPLICATION OF THE SEMIOTICS OF QUR’AN TOWARD THE STORY OF THE CHOSEN SERVANTS IN SURAH MARYAM

This study elaborates the application of semiotic theory in Surah Maryam (Maryam). This study is library research. The library research was conducted through various literature studies related to the problem investigated. The approach used is a semiotic approach. The data sources are divided into two; primary and secondary data. The primary data source is the Qur'an (surah Maryam) and the secondary data sources are books of interpretation, semiotics and linguistics. The data collection is done by quoting, adapting, and analyzing the representative literature and relevant to the problems discussed, then reviewing and concluding. The study results showed three forms of semiotic application in Surah Maryam: first, semiotics of significance from Ferdinand de Saussure's (synchronic-diachronic theory). Second, semiotics of communication from Charles S. Peirce's includes iconic, indexical, and symbolic theories. Third, connotative semiotics from Roland Barthes' which consists of denotative meaning and connotative meaning. This study implies that the semiotic reading of the Qur’an prioritizes the interpretation of the text in a synchronic and diachronic, denotative and connotative way. Hopefully, by this reading, religious and Islamic moderation could be achieved.

Criticism As A Resistance Strategy in Fārūq Juwaidah’s Poems

<p>This study aims to reveal the resistance strategy used by Faruq Juwaidah, an Egyptian poet who has high concern for the fate of the Palestinians who are under Israeli Zionist rule. The object of this research material is Risalatun Ila Sarun I and II in which there are resistance values. The method used is a semiotic reading which consists of heuristic and hermeneutic reading. The results of this study indicate that the resistance strategy in Faruq Juwaidah's poetry is criticism. This form of criticism is expressed in characterization which in psychological terms is called labeling. In this term used <em>tasybīh</em> and <em>isti'ārah</em>, which are the likeness of a pig, dog and cobra. In addition, criticism is also carried out by directly pinning negative traits, such as <em>qabī</em><em>h</em> "bad", <em>al-ma</em><em>l</em><em>'un</em> "the cursed", j<em>abbanun</em> "coward" <em>al-</em><em>f</em><em>āsiqu</em> "people who do bad things", and al- ' irbidu "a bad person in character". In addition, criticism is also expressed by the satire. REPRESENTATIONS OF TRAUMA, TRANSFERENCE, SUBALTERN DISCOURSE AND STOCKHOLM SYNDROME IN SYLVIA PLATH’S “DADDY”

Sylvia Plath’s controversial poem “Daddy” has usually been interpreted in biographical terms as an allegory of the poet’s troubled relationship with her father and her husband: the numerous references in it to Nazi Germany and the Holocaust are generally understood to be metaphors for the dominant and oppressive characters of these male figures. Thus, the aim of this study is to show other aspects such as trauma, transference, and subaltern discourse in the poem and to open the codes within the language. The methodology of this article is conducted through a semiotic reading. This essay reverses the metaphor, focusing on the speaker’s constantly shifting perspectives. And it argues, against the tradition, that the biographical context is of secondary importance: the focus of the poem, which was written in the context of the trial and execution of Adolf Eichmann, is on the speaker’s problematic identification and engagement with the trauma of the Jews. The analysis illustrates that it can therefore be understood as a unique and complex critique of Nazi ideology and social indoctrination, as they are experienced physically, linguistically, and psychologically.

Concept cathedral and “squaring the circle”: Interpreting the Gothic cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris as a standing hymn

Semiotics is used in the sphere of visual arts as a tool that helps reading the message included in a certain work. Gothic architecture, as an outcome of the rich cultural context of medieval tradition, where metaphysics, numbers and geometry were indispensable tools to symbolically manifest cosmological and theological concepts, is suggested as a good example for testing this approach in the field of architecture.In this paper, a semiotic reading for one of the most distinguished works of this era; i.e., the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris, is introduced as a model for this methodology. Among many message included in the building, such as the functional or the technical messages, this is a trial to introduce a reading, i.e., an interpretation, of what could be called “a hidden spiritual message”. The paper comes to a conclusion that the Gothic cathedral, as represented in Notre Dame de Paris, might be perceived as an externalization of a standing hymn that was meant to send continuous appeals of protection to Heaven.

Mapping coexistence in Italy: Reshaping the cartographic feelings of the plural nation

Rarely considered from the perspective of ordinary citizens as opposed to institutional actors, national maps have been primarily deconstructed as abstract tools of power that express nationalist agendas. This paper offers an alternative examination of the map as a performative tool of national pluralism. In tune with the most recent conceptualizations of everyday forms of nationhood, I explore multiple creative auto-cartographies of Italy as experiential images for investigating the coexistence of several senses of nationhood and cultural diversity. To this end, I combine an inductive visual content analysis of nearly three hundred remappings of Italy, uploaded online by readers of a popular national newspaper, La Repubblica, with a visual semiotic reading of six samples. Here, the playful idea of remapping the nation becomes a catalyst to produce or resist a sense of belonging to the nation, while eliciting a wider spectrum of feelings with regard to internal and external perceived meaningful others. This paper concludes that the different ways in which ordinary people map the nation have to be taken seriously, as they show evidence that these readers absorb and decode, but also resist or challenge, different mainstream discourses regarding the idea of nationality, coexistence, and cultural diversity.

Contemporary semiotic paths

Après avoir rappelé la généalogie théorique de la sémiotique, entre linguistique, anthropologie et phénoménologie, nous souhaitons mettre en évidence les propriétés de la sémiotique post-greimassienne en montrant que la « signification en acte », son objet, implique simultanément la saisie des formants, leur structuration, leur énonciation, leur mise en perspective, leurs implications dans le champ social et leurs enjeux anthropologiques. Nous nous appuyons sur deux exemples, l’un textuel, l’autre lexical. Le premier aura pour objet une lecture sémiotique transversale d’un texte de Victor Hugo, « L’archipel de la Manche », prologue de son roman Les Travailleurs de la mer (1866, éd. de 1883) : nous montrons comment la grande trame pluri-disciplinaire des sciences naturelles, humaines et sociales prend corps dans ce texte travers une poétique et une politique de l’énonciation, discipline première et ultime. Le second exemple a pour objet l’actant collectif à travers la saisie du pronom « nous », entre inclusion et exclusion. Nous prenons alors appui sur le texte ultime de Paolo Fabbri (à paraître), « Les identités collectives », pour interroger les nombreuses voies de passage entre la forme langagière et les politiques de l’altérité qu’elle induit. Cette conférence est donnée en hommage à ce grand sémioticien italien, disparu le 2 juin 2020.

The Boy on the Beach: A Semiotic Reading of Photographs

Photojournalism has been an important aspect of reporting social trauma since at least the American Civil War (1861–65), bringing the horrors of conflict “into the living-rooms” of homes across the world. Based on the photographs of two Syrian refugee children, Aylan Kurdi (“the boy on the beach”) and Omran Daqneesh (“the Aleppo boy in the ambulance”) the present research suggests that photographs of children in conflict are particularly memorable across different cultures: through their appeal to empathy they are able to resonate with viewers in a very direct way. Each of these photos has been widely reproduced in newspapers and on television worldwide. The photos acquired iconic status, published, forwarded and repeated in a plethora of media, including in the recent cases vast exposure on social media.

Makna Ritual Ganti Kelambu Makam Syeh Junaedi Desa Randusanga Wetan dan Potensinya Sebagai Sumber Belajar Bahasa Indonesia

The purpose of this study is to describe the ritual replacing the mosquito net of Syeh Junaedi grave in the village of Randusanga Wetan, analyze the meaning of the ritual replacing the mosquito net of Syeh Junaedi gravein the village of Randusanga wetan, and describe the potential of the ritual of replacing mosquito net syeh Junaedi grave in the village of Randusanga Wetan as a source of learning indonesian high school. The data collection techniques in this study are observation, interview, documentation, questionnaire and heuristic techniques. The approach used in this study is the ethnographic approach. The data analysis technique used is a hermeunitic reading technique (second-degree semiotic reading). Rereading by providing interpretation based on language and cultural conventions. The Icons in the Story of Al-Zill Al-Ari [The Naked Shadow] A Semiotic Study

This paper aims to present a semiotic reading of the Icon in the story of Al-Zill Al-Ari [The Naked Shadow] by the Yemeni short story writer and novelist Mohammed Al-Gharbi Imran. This paper is grounded in the critical semiotic approach to seeks to reveal the meaning of the Icons represented in the story by tracing the process of signification and the dynamics of importance within the story discourse. The study explores the implications of the Icons to produce general significance and to embody them in the context of the story discourse where its elements intermingle to reveal close and far meanings. The story of Al-Zill Al-Ari revolves around the character Alwan, who strives for a better life for himself. Still, he faces several obstacles that prevented him from fulfilling his aspirations.The story has an implicit criticism of the situation in Yemen. The writer implicitly criticizes the economic, social, and political life in Yemen. The study aims to highlight the importance of the Icon and the semiotic analysis of the literary texts.

BUNDA: KISAH CINTA 2 KODI BY ASMA NADIA: A STRUCTURALISM STUDY

This study aims to describe the socio-historic background of (1) Asma Nadia and (2) the structure of Bunda: Kisah Cinta 2 Kodi, This study uses the descriptive qualitative method. The research strategy is embedded in case studies. The research data are in the form of words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs in the novel Bunda: Kisah Cinta 2 Kodi that contains information about the socio-historic background of Asma Nadia, and the structure of the novel. The primary data source is the novel and the secondary data source is relevant journal articles. The data were collected through the library, observation, and documentation techniques. The data were analyzed using the semiotic reading method, namely heuristic and hermeneutic reading. The results of the study are (1) Sociohistorical setting: Asma Nadia was born into a literary family (her grandfather, Teuku Muhammad Usman El Muhammady and her two siblings, Helvy Tiana Rosa and her brother Aeron Tomino, and her husband, Isa Alamsyah, were writers). Her works have particular characteristics: Islamic theme, simple language, and the struggle of Moslem women. (2) The structure of the novel: the theme is the struggle of a mother in a family. It uses the flashback method since the story takes a regressive plot. The important figures are Kartika, Aryani, Farid, Bagja, Farid’s mother, Anton’s mother and Siti. The setting: schools, Kartika boarding house, campus canteens, cinemas, bookstores, Aryani's house, hospitals, abortion clinics, Tanah Abang market, Aryani's in-law's house, mushalla, and food stalls. Time setting: 1962, 1963, 1965, 1989, 1992, 1998 and 2000. Social setting: Kartika comes from Javanese and Minangkabau parents, whose works are civil servants and teachers.

KAJIAN SEMIOTIK DALAM NOVEL NY. TALIS (KISAH MENGENAI MADRAS)KARYA BUDI DARMA

This research is backed up by the desire to understand and interpret the semiotic meaning in Ny. Talis (Kisah Mengenai Madras) novel by Budi Darma. The purpose of this study is to describe: (1) hermeneutic code; (2) semantic/semes code; (3) symbolic codes; (4) proaretic code, and; (5) cultural codes in Ny. Talis (Kisah Mengenai Madras) by Budi Darma. The theory used to analyze the data is Roland Barthes' semiotics which focuses on semiotic codes. The approach used is poststructural semiotics by applying heuristic and hermeneutic semiotic reading methods. Research data in the form of dialog quotes, words, sentences, and paragraphs that are related to the focus of research on semiotic codes. research data sources come from Ny. Talis (Kisah Mengenai Madras) by Budi Darma (1996) published by Balai Pustaka.The results of the research and discussion show that the semiotic codes in Ny. Talis (Kisah Mengenai Madras) novel there is a lexias fragment that connects five semiotic codes. Liaison lexias is nothing but the meaning of signification about death and matters related to death. In addition, the reality of life refers to death.

Aesthetic Interpretation and Construction of an Illusionist Painting in the Qing Dynasty: A Semiotic Approach to Learning

Abstract As a discipline, semiotics has gained recognition in many fields. Cultural background plays an important part in the field of the visual art. Given the rich cultural context of the pictorial hybridization Chinese-European in the early Qing dynasty, the pictorial works can be used in studying semiotics. This article addresses a discourse on some semiotic reflections in painting. It focuses on the application of the theory of the semiotic scientist Charles Peirce that has proven to be suitable for analyzing pictorial works. The model chosen as a subject for investigation is a painting in ink on silk titled “Portrait of Qianlong’s Consort with Yongyan as a Child,” painted using Western techniques in the eighteenth century. The analysis of the portrait offers an appropriate basis to develop some semiotic reflections on this work of art by contributing to aesthetic and artistic awareness. Semiotic structures were employed to develop an understanding of the pictorial forms by turning each element into a tool of communication. The semiotic reading of this work is concerned with the visual art education and sensorial message of the painting.

Reading and Responding to Poetry: To Know, to Experience

Three poet-researchers conduct three different readings of Tishani Doshi’s poem A Fable for the 21st Century. We ask how as creative practitioners and critics we can negotiate the desire for mastery of a text, and the dangers a semiotic reading presents, allowing for difference, indecision, and complexity. We present our initial readings of the poem and summarize our discussions of them grounded in the transactional reading theory of Louise Rosenblatt and nuanced by assemblage theory. A final section includes three original poems written in response to Doshi, together with a brief discussion of them, and forms part of our conclusion.

Selling homes: the polysemy of visual marketing

ABSTRACT In this article, we will demonstrate how a social semiotic reading of a housing advertisement campaign differs from the audience reception of it. We have talked to the campaign’s producer – the Norwegian housing developer Block Watne – whose reflections are somewhat different from our own. The producer emphasises a policy of selling homes by choosing certain semiotic resources at the expense of others; however, in contrast to our academic reading, the producer does not pay particular attention to the grammar of visual design, such as composition and modality, which is understandable, because specialist language is required to do so. This is also the case for the audience, without compromising their ability to criticise the campaign in different ways. Furthermore, while we read gender roles in the campaign, the producer and the audience do not. We will demonstrate that incorporating knowledge about sign makers’ intentions and audience reception of visual marketing, provides additional insight into the dynamics of communication.

Reinscribing La Llorona

This article performs a semiotic analysis of La Llorona in Gloria Anzaldúa’s children’s book, Prietita and the Ghost Woman/Prietita y la Llorona, and Sandra Cisneros’s adult picture book, Have You Seen Marie?, theorizing both as examples of Anzaldúan praxis. The analysis begins with a close reading of Prietita and the Ghost Woman as a straightforward semiotic reinscription of meaning onto the laden signifier “La Llorona,” as represented in the cautionary folktale. This analysis elucidates the process of linguistic meaning making, exposing ideology when present and subverting ideology by layering additional meaning, a process Chela Sandoval refers to as “meta-ideologizing.” This reading of Prietita and the Ghost Woman provides the methodological frame to undertake a multitiered semiotic reading of Have You Seen Marie? Cisneros makes repeated allusions to La Llorona while refusing to complete the signification chain, never once mentioning La Llorona in a text that utilizes all her tropes and marries them to symbols referent to other female archetypes. In so doing, Have You Seen Marie? attempts a reconsolidation of symbols representing La Llorona, La Malinche, and La Virgen de Guadalupe as all part of the same unitary system. The text offers a symbolic “re-membering” of multiple archetypes as a symbolic, semiotic enactment of Anzaldúa’s “Coyolxauhqui imperative.”

Ivan Vyshensky’s Polemical Tractate “Porada” as a Synthetic Text

Polemical prose is a crucial and interesting part of Ukrainian literature of the 16th–17th centuries. It represents not only social realities of that time (the Union of Brest), but also the philosophical and ethical views of Ukrainian polemicists. These texts have significant multilayer symbolism, images, and Biblical intertext. The article highlights the short history of the study of the heritage of Ukrainian polemicist Ivan Vyshensky in general and the “Porada” in particular from the end of the 19th century (I. Franko, M. Hrushevskyi) to the end of the 20th century (P. Yaremenko, S. Pinchuk). Works of the polemicist are studied in historical, cultural, and philosophical terms. The author’s attention is concentrated on structural and semiotic readings of the third chapter of the polemicist’s magnum opus (“Knyzhka”). A structure is presented as an artificial scheme to organize all textual material into one discourse (according to Umberto Ecco). It is shown that some specifics of the composition’s structure influence the entire meaning of the “Porada”. Its construction, formed by such key elements as “frames” and a semantically meaningful center, is correlated with ancient religious beliefs (Mircea Eliade) as well as the Christian antithesis of “spirit and body”. Singled out are main codes, symbols, and images of the antithesis of the tractate. The code is a semiotic system and the text is a code-generator. The main codes of the “Porada” are its language code (liturgy), the code of mainting Christian customs (in the church as well as at home) and the code of faith. Loci (church, house) and monk’s clothes (hat, hair, belt, shoes) are symbols that represent the objectivity of image and depths of meaning (S. Averintsev). Images of antitheses reveal leading dichotomies: sacral – profane, monastic – secular, spiritual – sinful.

DIGITAL COMMUNICATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL HUMAN GENOME EDITING SUMMIT Exploring the multimodal potential of conference presentations 1

This study investigates the multimodal potential of conference presentations for specialized knowledge dissemination purposes during the International Summit on Human Gene Editing. The methodological framework combines a genre perspective with a social semiotic reading of multimodal artefacts, focusing on the main canvas of analysis represented by the video recording of a PowerPoint-based conference presentation, with the parallel corpus of slides and commissioned papers. The study pursues the aim to assess how different semiotic codes interact in the resulting multimodal artefact, and, specifically, how video recording of conference presentations contributes to the dissemination of scientific knowledge on human gene editing in slides and papers. The findings pinpoint the disappearance of elements typical of dissemination and popularization from the papers and the PowerPoint slides, and at the same time confirm that videos provide adaptive choices for integrating different modes for the fullest knowledge dissemination attempt, with some minor technical shortcomings.
