Semiotic Analysis in Barbie Film by Charles Sanders Peirce's Theory

This research discussed the meaning of the signs in the Barbie (2023) film. This research aimed to find the signs contained in the film based on the types of signs in Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic and to interpret the meaning of these signs based on the semiosis process which involved the relationship between representamen, object, and interpretant. In this research, researchers used qualitative methods and data was collected by marking and sorting with a semiotic approach. The researcher found 4 types of signs: icon show that every woman has the same opportunities and rights as other women and has equal gender roles as men in society, qualisign show the feminine side of women and the sexual violence that women often experience, symbol shows allusions to sexism and patriarchal culture, and index shows self-discovery. Based on 4 types of signs that have been analyzed through a semiosis process involving representamen, object, and interpretant, the researcher found the meaning of this film was about the position of women in society, the importance of gender equality without gender stereotypes, women also had the same rights in a career regardless of their physical appearance and skin color, women had ambition and dreams and be able to play an active role in society as well as the meaning about the importance of being yourself.

A Comparative Analysis of Hotspots in Semiotics Theory Research in China and Abroad: A Knowledge Mapping Analysis Based on CiteSpace

Based on literature data with "semiotics theory" as the research topic from the CNKI and WOS databases, this study employs CiteSpace software to conduct a comparative analysis of the relevant research on semiotics theory in China and abroad from 2000 to 2022. The results show that: Domestic and international research on semiotics theory exhibit a multi-centered development trend, gradually forming distinctive and complementary schools of semiotics theory. China's and abroad research focuses differently, with foreign research focusing more on applying semiotics theory in social sciences, educational research, language fields, and biological sciences. In contrast, domestic research tends to focus on introducing and studying foreign semiotics theories, with linguistics being an important research area. Both domestic and international research on semiotics theory have expanded the scope of theoretical research, forming widely applicable categories of semiotics. Hotspots in foreign research include "student";"model"; "future"; "evolution"; "information"; "framework"; "discourse"; and "construction", while hotspots in domestic research include "semiotics", "Peirce", "pragmatism", "Lotman", and "symbols". The development process of domestic and international research on semiotics theory has some differences, with each stage exhibiting different research characteristics. However, both have developed from theoretical to applied research, phenomenon to essence law research, and single-mode to multi-mode research. Domestic researchers should strengthen communication and cooperation with international counterparts, build a research community for semiotics theory, deepen research connotations, and provide more case studies as paradigms; timely summarize the current status and development patterns of domestic research on semiotics theory, and gradually form a Chinese school of semiotics with international influence.

Gaze and power relations: A semiotic analysis of Thomas Hardy’s “Neutral Tones”

In this paper, I analyze Thomas Hardy’s “Neutral Tones” (1876), which has traditionally been interpreted through historical and personal lenses related to the poet’s voice and the nineteenth-century context. Diverging from these perspectives, my semiotic reading focuses on the aesthetics of the language, revealing hidden aspects and deeper layers of meaning within the text. This study explores literary devices such as metaphor (Friedrich Nietzsche and Jacques Derrida), prosopopoeia, and ekphrasis, also exploring the theoretical concepts of male/female gazes (Laura Mulvey) and power relations (Michel Foucault). The findings suggest that the speaker’s identity is not confined to a male persona, and that power relations and the interplay of gazes shape the dynamics between the characters.

Non-Verbal Communication in the Tom and Jerry Film

The purpose of this writing is to delve deeper into nonverbal and verbal communication in the cartoon film "Tom and Jerry." In this research, a qualitative research method is used with the semiotic analysis model of Charles Sanders Peirce. Data collection techniques include document analysis and indirect observation. In the film Tom and Jerry, the researchers found nonverbal communication that has several functions, namely repetition, accentuation, complementation, contradiction, substitution, and regulation. In nonverbal communication, there are body movements, touch, vocalics, and others. In the film Tom and Jerry, there is 99% nonverbal communication. In this film, Tom and Jerry mostly always fight and communicate nonverbally. Although this film has no sound, most children and even adults find it entertaining.

Diagnostic errors in assessing magnetic resonance imaging semiotics of primary extracerebral tumors: a case series

Primary extracerebral tumors are represented by benign and malignant neoplasms of the meninges and cranial nerves. Their presurgical differential diagnosis is based on the analysis of magnetic resonance imaging semiotics. The critically significant aspects for classifying tumors of this group include the following: neoplasm structure, contrast enhancement type, delimiting from the brain tissue, and relationship with the meninges or cranial nerves. Differential diagnosis of extracerebral tumors based on visual analysis of magnetic resonance imaging data is generally not challenging because most tumors have typical magnetic resonance imaging semiotics. However, in cases with atypical magnetic resonance imaging signs, reliable differentiation of tumors can be challenging. Moreover, the greatest complexity is the differentiation of meningioma grades, distinction between solitary fibrous tumors and meningiomas, and identification of the tumor type when localized in the cerebellopontine angles. The case series presented the most typical features leading to errors in the differential diagnosis of primary extracerebral tumors. All the presented tumors were verified with postsurgical histological examination. The analysis of the case reports demonstrates that a review of the combined semiotic signs can lower the number of diagnostic errors.

This research is limited to several main ideas related to the observation of the following two questions: What are the signs and markers of the meaning of the Sikerei wife's tattoo in Madobag, What are the provisions for marking the meaning of the Sikerei wife's tattoo in Madobag, The aim of this research is to find out the linguistic signs that used in the meaning of the Sikerei Wife tattoo. To explain the signs and markers in the meaning of the Sikerei Wife tattoo in Madobag. The theory used comes from Chandler and Barthes' semiotic theory which is used to answer the objectives of this research. For the data analysis method, the author uses qualitative research with the emphasis on inner meaning and understanding (verstehen), reasoning, definition of certain situations (in several contexts), studying things related to everyday life such as the culture of a region and also semiotic theory. Data collection techniques use literature study techniques to search for data that is relevant to the main analysis. This research is qualitative research using field notes, interviews, personal documents, and photos or drawings. The conclusion in this analysis is that the Sikerei Wife Tattoo for the Madobag community is part of the order of life based on Arat Sabulungan beliefs. This belief is a genuine religion and gives enthusiasm for life. Sikerei's wife's tattoo is one of the cultural heritages of the Mentawai people's ancestors. Sikerei's wife's tattoo pattern is a visual language as a means of communication to show the origin of existence, a sign of territorial ownership, and other symbols.

Semiotic Analysis of Carving Symbol on Minangkabau Traditional House Rajo Mulie in South Solok

This research aims to describe the relationship between the form of cohesion and the meaning of coherence in the discourse analysis of Sandiaga Uno's Speech in the High Level Thematic Debate On Tourism United Nation General Assembly 2022. The frequency of use of cohesion markers and coherence varies in their use, in The subject of this study focused on sentences in speech texts. The theoretical research used in this research is Tarigan's theory which discusses aspects of cohesion and coherence. This research is the researcher himself with based on knowledge of theories regarding aspects of cohesion and coherence. This study used qualitative descriptive method Data were collected through observation methods. Then, the data is analyzed through the method of interpretive findings with the technique of collecting data taking notes techniques. The results showed that markers of cohesion and coherence were used in the script of Sandiaga Uno's speech. Shows the element of grammatical cohesion consists of elements of reference, subtitution, ellipsis, and conjuction. Then The lexical cohesion element consists of repetition, synonymy, antonymy, collocation. From the aspect of coherence observed through contradiction, contrast, and temporal coherence.

The aim of the research carried out is to find out how the meaning of denotation, connotation and myth is analyzed in Bobon Santoso's YouTube content in the Kuali Merah Putih episode so as to build the spirit of nationalism in the audience. Data collection was carried out using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis, literature study and documentation so that in the end it created a conclusion about the meaning of the Kuali Merah Putih denotation, namely the spirit of nationalism is depicted in scenes where activities such as flag ceremonies, singing the national anthem, regional art performances become media in instilling noble values. nation and nationalism in everyday life and also in the world of elementary school children's education. The connotation meaning, Kuali Merah Putih is the stretching of the Red and White flag along the road which involves all elements of Papuan society. A narrative that makes it clear that the Red and White is still flying high in the land of Papua even though it is on the edge of Indonesia and rarely receives attention from the government. And the myth, the Red and White Cauldron, namely the spirit of nationalism, should be spread from an early age and from the tip of Aceh to Papua there without distinction between language, ethnicity and other differences.

Representation of Existentialism in Jo Yong's Fairy Tales in the Drama It's Okay to Not Be Okay (A.J. Greimas Semiotic Analysis)

This research examines the fairy tale 진짜 진짜 얼굴을 찾아서 (Finding The Real Face) which is found in the Korean drama "It's Okay to Not Be Okay". This research analyzes the actant schema and functional structure from A.J.'s structural narrative theory. Greimas, after that, identified the representation of existentialism in it. The method used is qualitative with narrative semiotic analysis presented descriptively. The results of this research show that the fairy tale 진짜 진짜 얼굴을 찾아서 (Finding The Real Face) fulfills the six actants in varying amounts. The dominant actant of this tale is the Box Man, namely as subject, helper and recipient. The functional structure of a fairy tale has a sequential plot. Apart from that, this fairy tale reflects the search for identity of the characters, namely the Box Man, the Mask Child, and the Tin Can Princess.

The Meaning of Sarong in Madurese Culture: A Symbolic Analysis of Films on YouTube Mata Pena

The purpose of this research is to examine the symbolic meaning of the Madurese sarong as a cultural symbol in short films featured on the YouTube channel Mata Pena. The background of this research highlights the significance of the sarong as a symbol of identity and a representation of cultural values in Madurese society. The sarong is not only viewed as an item of clothing but also as a marker of social status, tradition, and honor passed down through generations. This research employs a qualitative method with a semiotic analysis approach based on Charles Sanders Peirce's theory, focusing on three main elements: sign, object, and interpretant. This framework is used to understand how the meaning of the sarong is constructed within cultural and social contexts. The findings reveal that the Madurese sarong carries profound meaning, both as a symbol of social status and cultural identity and as a representation of tradition, politeness, religion and honor in Madurese society. Islamophobia Agenda in Islamist Magazines in Türkiye: A Content Analysis

The presence and capabilities of religious groups in Turkey, particularly in terms of their propaganda power, is an undeniable reality. These groups have a well-established institutional infrastructure in magazine publishing, and the magazine industry has successfully transitioned into the digital realm. However, there is a lack of sufficient studies in the literature concerning the role of Islamist magazines in Turkey in addressing Islamophobia on a global scale. Religious groups in Turkey have historically and culturally established strong ties with society, particularly in utilizing magazines as a tool for propaganda. In this context, the study examines the theme of Islamophobia, which has become increasingly widespread globally, especially in Europe and the United States, in the magazines published by religious groups in Turkey. Using a qualitative methodology, the article analyzes the publications of the five major religious groups in Turkey, focusing on the concept of Islamophobia. The data collected has been examined through semiotic analysis and content analysis techniques. The findings of the study reveal that religious groups exhibit shortcomings in publishing articles that generate counterarguments to Islamophobia and in utilizing global language in their magazine publications. It is believed that this study will contribute to future research on the relationship between religious groups, Islamophobia, propaganda, and digital communication.

Hephyronyms in the structure of the Samarkand text

INTRODUCTION. Recently, the peripheral categories of onomastics have become the object of onomastic research, which include the name of the proper bridge – gephyronyms. This term is not noted in the most famous Dictionary of Russian Onomastic Terminology by N.V. Podolskaya. Being a meaningful independent unit of knowledge in the onomastic consciousness of native speakers, gephironim exist in a system-centric form and in an anthropocentric dimension, implementing the urban text. Understanding the essence of the toponym as a text goes back to the ideas of M.V. Gorbanevsky, who believed that the versatility of the components of a toponym is related to the toponym-text. The purpose of the study is to consider the spatial locus of the city of Samarkand based on the material of gephironim texts, which can unfold and represent known extralinguistic and cultural knowledge, representing the city-text.MATERIALS AND METHODS. The following methods are used in the study: observation, semiotic and semantic analysis, interpretation method. Empirical context of the study of – gephyronyms of Samarkand, recorded on the city map and in reference books, which are the object of scientific interest of the author.RESULTS AND DISCUSSION. A person fills the space of the city with specific toponymic units involved in the formation of the urban text, which allows “to read” the city. The coherence and integrity of the urban text are formed by toponyms-texts, the meanings of which include the following components: address, chronological, historical and cultural, local history, national-cultural, text, and this series remains open.CONCLUSION. Certain properties of the Samarkand text are reflected in toponym texts. Since any toponym performs an iconic function and urban semiotics is intertextual, each individual toponym-text enters into an intertextual relationship with another toponym-text, forming an urban text with onomastic information.

Health Communication: A Multimodal Discourse Analysis of Selected Corona Virus Posters in Kenya

The world today is faced with various epidemics which have introduced myriad of challenges. COVID-19 disease is the latest crisis with its attendant to health and language issues. With its emergence, COVID-19 introduced into the global linguistic repertoire a specialized form of discourse which manifested in the way government communicates to the public. The study set to analyze multimodality features of COVID 19 posters. The objectives were to describe the multimodal structure of COVID-19 posters, establish the semiotic choices adopted, explore the use of persuasive verbal and visual elements as components of multimodality, and explain the functions of multimodal metadiscourse. The study employed Social Semiotics Theory and adopted a descriptive research design. The target population was COVID-19 posters in Kenya, with a sample size of 30 posters selected through purposive and snowball sampling. Data collection methods included documentary analysis and an observational checklist, with data analyzed qualitatively through content analysis. The findings revealed that COVID-19 posters in Kenya predominantly utilized bold colors, attention-grabbing visuals, and culturally resonant symbols to capture attention and enhance message retention. Semiotic choices included the strategic use of icons, such as masks and social distancing symbols, and multilingual text to cater to diverse audiences. Verbal messages often relied on persuasive techniques, including imperative statements ("Stay Safe," "Wash Hands") and reassuring tones, to encourage compliance. Multimodal metadiscourse was instrumental in creating coherence and reinforcing critical health messages, such as prevention measures and the importance of vaccination. The study recommended the promotion of health literacy through the design of clear, concise, and inclusive messaging that accommodates varying levels of literacy. Posters should utilize plain language, simple visuals, and relatable examples to convey key information about prevention, symptoms, and protective measures.

This study aims to analyze the emotional representation of characters with intellectual limitations in the film My Idiot Brother. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with the aim of describing the emotional meaning displayed by the characters in the film My Idiot Brother using a semiotic approach. The focus of the research is how the main character, Hendra, displays emotions such as anger, sadness, emotion, and happiness to convey a moral message about acceptance and empathy. Data is collected through repeated observation and documentation of cutouts of relevant scenes. Semiotic analysis is carried out to interpret the symbolic meaning of the expression of the character. The results indicate that the visualized emotions reflect social dynamics within a family with a member who has special needs, underscoring the importance of family support free from stigma. These findings demonstrate the role of film in shaping public perceptions of individuals with disabilities and fostering social inclusion. This study contributes to the discourse on character representation in media and promotes inclusivity

Representation of Family Dysfunction in the Film "Noktah Merah Perkawinan" (Semiotic Analysis of Roland Barthes)

A film is a collection of many images combined into a single whole, consisting of audio and visual components. Movies also often serve as a mirror of social reality. One of the Indonesian films that reflects social reality is the film "Noktah Merah Perkawinan" which tells the story of conflicts and dynamics in domestic life, as well as depicting various social and cultural issues that are relevant to Indonesian society. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze how family dysfunction is represented in the movie "Noktah Merah Perkakahan" and how this can affect people's perception of family problems. Using a descriptive qualitative research method with Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis by identifying several scenes that describe the characteristics of being in a dysfunctional family proposed by a psychotherapist named Dr. Rashmi Prakash in Fistory Parenting, including lack of communication, lack of empathy, mental problems, excessive behavior control, lack of emotional support and violence. The findings emphasize the depiction of gender inequality as a major contributing factor to dysfunction, revealing that children are deeply impacted by such dynamics. This research enriches the understanding of media's role in portraying family dysfunction and aims to offer insights into addressing such issues effectively in real family settings.

Seni Berperang pada Masa Jawa Kuno: Pola Astrologis-Simbolik dalam Naskah Yoga Catur Dewata

Lontar Yoga Catur Dewata (YCD) is a literature in Old Javanese that discusses yoga for starting a war. The art of war is mostly concerned only with war strategy (Griffith 2005; Suryohadiprojo 2008). This study found that the art of war that developed in ancient Java used yoga practices with astrological patterns. YCD manuscripts as research objects are recorded in the FS UI collection with the code AH.58 LT-142 and are now stored in the UI's Library. The text of YCD describes the strategy of war to defeat the enemy personally with astrological-symbolic aspects. It deals with counting days, mantras, yogic practices of the existence of deities in sthana, svaravyanjana-nyasa 'syllabic applause', and animal symbolism. The main formulation of this research problem is how to reveal the narrative of astrological-symbolic patterns and the exposure of the relationship with astrological patterns by the art of war in ancient Java. Research requires philological work to produce text editions from YCD manuscripts. The methods used for data analysis are qualitative descriptive and Pierce's semiotic theory to analyze interpretive signs. The results of this study show that the astrological narrative found in the YCD text is related to warfare strategies in ancient Java. It is a local genius and folk science that developed in the community and is recorded in the YCD text.

This study aims to determine the denotative, connotative and mythological meanings contained in the object of research, namely the lyrics of the song ‘Happier’ by Olivia Rodrigo. The main theory used in this research is the semiotic theory of Roland Barthes. The method used in this research is a qualitative method with a descriptive interpretive approach. Data collection techniques are document studies by obtaining data from various sources relevant to the research. The results showed that the lyrics of the songs studied contained denotative, connotative and mythological meanings in them. The denotative meaning conveyed by the song creator in the lyrics of the song ‘Happier’, namely the main character’s wish for her ex-boyfriend that he can be happy with his new girlfriend, but not as happy as when he was with her. Then the connotative meaning contained in the lyrics of this song is the main character has not been able to let go of her ex-boyfriend with another woman. She also hopes that her ex-lover will always remember her. While the mythology contained in the lyrics of this song is that a woman doesn’t easily forget the past and hard to move on from a love relationship, because women prefer to use feelings rather than thinks.Keywords: song lyrics, semiotic, denotative, connotative, mythology

This mini research aims to obtain data and further elaborate on the elements of feminism contained in thelyrics of Kesha's song 'Woman'. Song lyrics can be classified as a form of literary work because of the wayit is created with other forms of literature, namely poetry. The method used in this research is a descriptivequalitative method where the data collection technique used in this research is a column table. The theoryused is the semiotic theory put forward by 'Ferdinand De Saussure' where this research will collect data basedon the Signifier: The physical or sound part of a sign that we recognize, such as the written or spoken wordand the Signified: The concept or meaning associated with the signifier contained in the lyrics of Kesha'ssong 'woman'. This song was chosen as research material because it is considered to contain many elementsof feminism.

An Analytical Study of Semiotic Perspectives in Simpsons’ Seasons: Fiction cum Reality

Language plays an indispensable role in human communication. It has many forms, and each form has specific goals. This research explores the intricate interplay of semiotic elements within the iconic animated television series, Simpsons, across multiple seasons. Language in its multiple manifestations can also play a significant role in determining the relation between fiction and reality. The researchers have opted for a qualitative approach to analyzing the data in this regard. The most relevant Seasons were targeted and specific scenes of the selected episodes from these Seasons were analyzed critically. The study focused on ten predictions that relate to real-life events. In the semiotic analysis, the researchers targeted two levels of meaning: denotative and connotative. The first referred to literal meanings whereas the second more profound and contextualized ones. The findings illustrate that semiotics, in its various dimensions, play a significant role in the predictions of subsequent realities in the Simpsons.
