PHILOSOPICAL OF SYAIKHONA KHOLIL’S MOSQUE IN DEVELOPING CHARACTER MADURESE LOCAL WISDOM

The aim of this research is to explain the philosophical meaning of Syaikhona Kholil’s mosque in building the character and ethics of local Madurese wisdom using semiotic studies. This research focuses on the philosophical meaning of Syaikhona Kholil’s mosque in building character and ethics of Madurese local wisdom uses using semiotic studies using qualitative research methods, which are used to analyze meaning using systematic linguistic research. The data sources in this research were obtained from the results of a field survey and through interviews with the grave guard or caretaker of the Syaikhona Kholil Bangkalan mosque. Furthermore, the results of various interviews and surveys will then be analyzed using semiotic studies. From the results of this analysis, the philosophical meaning that appears and is contained in the mosque of Syaikhona Kholil Bangkalan can be classified. Then we can map the meaning contained in the mosque of Syaikhona Kholil. From the results of this analysis and mapping, religious tourism in Madura, especially Bangkalan, will be more widely introduced.

Business Communication in the Sustainability of Belitong Geopark to Economic Growth of Tanjungpandan Community

The Belitong Geopark, located in Tanjungpandan is one of the geopark areas that has extraordinary natural potential. The sustainability of the Belitong Geopark has become a concern in recent years, with efforts to utilize the geopark's potential to support the economic growth of local communities that have not felt a significant economic impact. At the level of business communication studies, we see that there are barriers to effective communication with the resulting economic implications. The methods of this study are observation and literature review. The data that has been collected is then analyzed using Em Griffin's semiotic analysis. The results showed that the sustainability of the Belitung Geopark has a positive influence on the economic growth of the Tanjungpandan community. The increase in Tanjungpandan community income is driven by increased tourist visits to Geopark Belitung. The increase in employment of the Tanjungpandan community is driven by the increase in economic activities related to Belitung Geopark, such as tourism, trade, and services. The increased welfare of the Tanjungpandan community is driven by increased income and employment.

The Influence Of Rock N' Roll Culture On The Koes Brothers' Song "Poor Clown" (Roland Barthes Semiotics Study)

The song is titled “Poor Clown " which is the work of the phenomenal Band in Indonesia Koes Bersaudara. This song became the first rock n ' roll song that excited the old order. This song made them forced to be put in prison in the Glodok area of West Jakarta. This happened because the Indonesian government at that time strongly condemned everything that smelled Westernized because it was considered capable of eroding the culture and noble values of the nation. The purpose of this study was to find out how much influence rock n’ roll was in the song titled “Poor Clown” through the theory of semiotics from Roland Bathes. The method used is qualitative research with qualitative interpretative approach. This research uses constructivist paradigm. This study belongs to the class of subjective-constructivism because this research is based on the views and thoughts of the author personally.. The results of this study is true, the song titled “Poor Clown” by the Koes brothers became a satire for the president in the era of the Old Order, Sukarno, which was studied through the semiotics theory of Roland Barthes.

A Semiotic Analysis of Nonverbal Linguistic Signals Used On Billboard Posters as a Means of Creating Public Awareness During the Covid-19 Pandemic in Douala

This paper examines the use of nonverbal linguistic signals on billboard posters during the Covid-19 pandemic in Douala. It has been noticed that nonverbal signals such as sweating, wearing a nose mask, washing of hands with clean running water and soap and standing two metres apart from each other and the use of colours such as white and red among others play an important role in the way human beings communicate especially during a period of crisis. Although it is nonverbal, this means of communication acts more than the verbal one. This work focuses on nonverbal linguistic features used on billboard posters in the city of Douala as a means of creating public awareness in relation to the Covid-19 pandemic so that the contamination and mortality rate can be reduced. This study is of great value because it demonstrates how people should live during a pandemic era without being contaminated. This research uses a qualitative research design. The researcher culled some pictures that were pasted on billboards during the crisis (2020-2021) on the streets of Douala. Insight was drawn from Barthes (1964) theory of semiotics. The findings indicated that people washed their hands with clean running water and soap, they wore masks, arrows were used to show how people should stand with others in public, colours such as red was used to show how dangerous this virus is and the white colour was also used to indicate that people need to be clean during this period so that they can minimise the chances of being contaminated. Capitalisation was used either in red or black to attract the attention of the public to the messages written on the billboards. The researcher concludes that people should develop the culture of reading public notices especially billboard posters during epidemics and pandemics so that they can save their lives.

Symbolic Communication of the Tuntung Pandang (Kondang) Skullcap as a Regional Symbol of Tanah Laut Regency

This study collected data through analysis of the Tanah Laut Regency news portal which reviewed the Regent's use of the Tuntung Pandang skullcap at various official events. A qualitative approach was used to explore the symbolic meanings contained in this skullcap and how society received and communicated these meanings. The research results show that the Tuntung Pandang Kopiah is not just traditional clothing or a symbol of formality, but is also an important marker of cultural identity for the people of Tanah Laut. This symbol contains values ​​such as tradition, authority, and courage which are closely related to the position of Regent. This research provides a new contribution by describing the complex relationship between the symbol (Tuntung Pandang skullcap), the object (Regent of Tanah Laut), and the community's interpretation or understanding of the symbol. Through the approach of Peirce's semiotic theory and Ogden and Richards' Triangle Theory, this research highlights that cultural symbols not only have aesthetic value but are also an important tool in building the social and cultural identity of a community. This research also explores the meanings implicit in the use of symbols and how these symbols play a role in building identity and social solidarity in local communities.. Semiotic analysis of presidential candidate roasting video content on TikTok’s @sandissukron

This study aims to analyze the content of presidential candidate roasting videos on @sandissukron’s TikTok account using Peirce’s semiotic theory. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection through indirect observation of three @sandissukron video contents and documentation studies. The results showed that the video content can be analyzed using Peirce’s semiotics, resulting in various meanings ranging from principles, traits, personalities, to implied goals. The explanation of these meanings is described in a trichotomy table consisting of sign, object, and interpretant. The gestures, intonation and coded language in the video represent the nature and personality of the intended presidential candidate. Anies Baswedan is portrayed as someone who is good at rhetoric and has a smart political strategy, Prabowo Subianto is portrayed as a power-hungry individual with a poor record on human rights, while Ganjar Pranowo is portrayed as a figure who is not trusted and is considered a party puppet. This research provides deep insight into how signs in TikTok video content can provide complex interpretations of presidential candidates and reflect public opinions and perceptions. It shows that social media has a significant role in shaping political narratives and public opinion.

Semiotic Analysis on Sustainable Community Farming: Multimodal Analysis, A Case Study of Community Farming at Desa Impian, Merbau Sempak, Selangor, Malaysia

The majority of global population is in the cities and most tourists are concentrated in the cities. Research on the relationship between urban farming and tourism is gaining popularity in urban studies. In Malaysia, community urban farming has been identified as a solution to sustainable development to provide food in or out of the city. This study is about how the community at Desa Impian, Merbau Sempak promotes organic vegetable farming to academicians and business communities. The idea is to promote this area as a sustainable tourism hub for researchers and business communities. This study is a multimodal semiotic analysis to better understand the dynamic of community farming culture in Malaysia. Using qualitative design and multi-layered analytical framework to explore interactive meanings construed through the functionality of various semiotic resources in multimodal narratives this study reveals the dynamic multi-layered nature of government, individual community members, and public voices about community farming culture from a Malaysian socio-cultural context. On a deeper level, farming at Desa Impian means self-identification and sharing of identity that gives rise to a sense of belonging. This study contributes to the knowledge of multimodal socio-semiotic and narrative theories on sustainable urban farming tourism in Malaysia.

Religious imaginations: religious literacy as the reading of signs

ABSTRACT Drawing together Charles Taylor’s idea of the social imaginary and the semiotic theory of Ferdinand de Saussure, this article develops an account of religious literacy as the expansion of imagination. It argues that a conventional description of ‘world religions’ is reductive and essentialised, while the counteracting focus on instances of ‘lived religion’ fails to do justice to the organising power and scope of religious traditions. Both approaches draw on an imaginative framework of signs that shape the believer’s understanding of the world and their place within it. Religious literacy is an awareness of the key features and contours of these contrasting imaginative landscapes. Seeing religious traditions in these terms gives a better account of how they can be pathologized as they are drawn away from the mystical, analogical reading of signs that characterises any religious imaginary. To illustrate the theories set out, two contrasting examples of the Christian imagination are explored: American Christian Nationalism and the Forest Churches of Ethiopia.

Pesan Akhlak dalam Program ”Jejak Islam” TVRI Sumatera Utara: Analisis Semiotika

Examining the "Jejak Islam" show on North Sumatra TVRI's YouTube channel for its moral message is the purpose of this study. This study focuses on the "Jejak Islam" segment of "Penerang Hati" on TVRI North Sumatra. A qualitative methodology based on semiotic analysis was applied in this investigation. Following Roland Barthes's theory of denotation, connotation, and myth, the research design provides a detailed description of the signs utilized in the "Jejak Islam" program and how these signals generate meaning. Thanks to their genuine desire to teach and practice the braille Quran, the moral lessons delivered in the "Jejak Islam" program's episode of "Penerang Hati" through Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis comprise of morality towards God, according to the research results. Social norms pertaining to other people, including deference to authority figures (such as professors), friendship, politeness, and parental respect.

Implicit Meanings of Jentaka Lyrics Song And Video Clip

This study analyzed the lyrics and music video of "Jentaka" by For Revenge using the semiotic approaches of Charles Sanders Peirce and Ferdinand de Saussure. This research used a qualitative approach with semiotic analysis methods. This approach was chosen because the research aimed to explore the meanings contained in the lyrics and music video of “Jentaka” by the band For Revenge. Through a qualitative approach, the researcher could understand and interpret the symbols and signs used in these media. The song depicted themes such as emotional suffering, identity duality, and self-introspection. The lyrics reflected the conflict between the external appearance of being an entertainer and the inner feelings of pain and sadness. Additionally, the inclusion of a Quranic verse from Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 64. The results of the study indicated that semiotic analysis could reveal complex layers of meaning in artistic works, offering a deeper understanding of the messages and themes conveyed by the artist. This research contributed to further comprehension of the use of signs and symbols in music and music videos as a medium of artistic communication.

Analisis Semiotika Makna Kerinduan pada Lirik Lagu “Gala Bunga Matahari” Karya Sal Priadi

This article examines the meaning of longing in the lyrics of the song “Gala Bunga Matahari” by Sal Priadi through Roland Barthes semiotic analysis. The purpose of this article is to find the meaning of longing in the song by using Roland Barthes' theory which explains denotation meaning, connotation meaning, and mythical meaning. The research method used is interpretive qualitative method or inductive way of thinking, which is a way of thinking from specific to general. The data collection technique used is a document study, namely by searching and obtaining from various sources that contain the necessary data. The results of the semiotic study of the lyrics of the song “Gala Bunga Matahari” by Sal Priadi are first, the denotation meaning, the songwriter wants to convey a great feeling of longing for someone who is gone and wants to meet even if only in a dream in the form of a sunflower. This is evidenced in every stanza of the song explaining hope and longing for someone who is gone. Second, the connotation meaning, the songwriter feels sadness and hope in himself because he cannot meet again and hopes that loved ones get a good life in the afterlife. This is evidenced in the first, second, fourth and seventh stanzas. Third, the mythical meaning, the author wants to convey the message that the intense longing for a person who has passed away by trying to believe in the prayers that are sent for the happiness of the deceased and believe that we can continue life well, this longing and sadness can be treated by letting go, accepting, and believing. This is evidenced in the third, fifth, and eighth stanzas.

Social Semiotic Analysis of a Pet Protection Post on Instagram

This study applies Kress and Van Leeuwen's Visual Grammar framework to analyze an Instagram post advocating pet protection. The research focuses on representational, interactive, and compositional metafunctions to understand how visual and textual elements combine to convey urgency and empathy. The representational analysis highlights the dog's isolated portrayal and the use of the pronoun "me" to foster an emotional connection. The interactive analysis examines indirect gaze, close-up shots, and low angles to engage viewers and emphasize their role in pet protection. The compositional analysis reveals the strategic placement of verbal and visual elements, with bold text and contrasting colors enhancing the message's salience. This multimodal approach demonstrates the synergy between visual and textual elements, creating a cohesive and persuasive narrative. The study's findings align with existing literature on social semiotics and Visual Grammar, emphasizing the importance of integrated visual strategies in social media advocacy. The research offers practical insights for designing effective pet protection campaigns, highlighting the role of Visual Grammar in promoting responsible pet ownership and animal welfare. Future research should explore the long-term impact of these visual strategies on viewer behavior and the effectiveness of different semiotic modes across various social media platforms.

Adaptation Analysis Of Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince Novel By J.K. Rowling Into Film By David Yates

Nowadays, there are many literary works that is transformed into an adaptation work. One of them is J.K rowling's novel entitled Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince with the same title. Using this object, this article focuses on the motives that exist in the process of adapting the novel and make it into the form of a film adaptation. During process of transformation,it arises some changes and some excisions. These changes because of the consequences of the differences in the media, the text and audiovisual. There are three issues discussed in this research. First, what are the changes that have been made by the production team, the second, the consequences of differences in media against stories in novels and films, the third, the motives that contained in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Then, we use comparative method in this study in order to compare the differences between the novel and the film. During the process of analysis, we use the theory of adaptation and semiotic analysis. Furthermore, this article begins by classifying the differences that exist in the novel and compare it to the movie. After that, we use semiotics in order to help find the ideology that contained in the novel and the film. This ideology helps on finding the motives that contained in the film adaptation. The results of the analysis are: dominant ideology in the film adaptation is capitalism ideology that explains the economic and cultural motives in this film adaptation.

The poem “Bunga Ilmu Itu” by Dinullah Rayes:Riffaterre's Semiotic Studies

This research aims to reveal the meaning of the poetry and text which became the background for the creation of the poem "The Flower of That Science" by Dinullah Rayes. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative method. Data was collected using library techniques, listen and take notes. Data analysis was carried out using the Riffaterre semiotic model reading method. The research results show that the meaning of knowledge or intelligence possessed by humans is a gift from God. Humans should not be arrogant. It is better if the intelligence you have can be felt by many people. So that intelligence will be beautiful because of its benefits. Apart from having meaning, the poem has an intertextual relationship with Al-Baqarah verses: 31-34. So Al-Baqarah verses: 31-34 become a hypogram from the second line to the fourteenth line of the poem. This serves to remind us that the knowledge or intelligence possessed by humans is a gift from God. The fifteenth to twenty-fifth lines of the poem show the poet's knowledge of the character he is familiarly calling Zul as someone who has intelligence and provides benefits to many people.

Figuring the World of Home-School Relationships

This article uses figured worlds to explore the limit-situations imposed by dominant narratives of home-school relationships. Through a semiotic analysis of a wall hanging in a preschool classroom, we explore what figured worlds are imagined as possible for home-school relationships. The dominant narratives implicit in these figured worlds ossify configurations of home and school that privilege ways of being and knowing that exclude, reject, or demonize the experiences of culturally, linguistically, and socioeconomically diverse families.

Examining the effectiveness of artificial intelligence applications in asthma and COPD outpatient support in terms of patient health and public cost: SWOT analysis.

This research aimed to examine the effectiveness of artificial intelligence applications in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) outpatient treatment support in terms of patient health and public costs. The data obtained in the research using semiotic analysis, content analysis and trend analysis methods were analyzed with strengths, weakness, opportunities, threats (SWOT) analysis. In this context, 18 studies related to asthma, COPD and artificial intelligence were evaluated. The strengths of artificial intelligence applications in asthma and COPD outpatient treatment stand out as early diagnosis, access to more patients and reduced costs. The points that stand out among the weaknesses are the acceptance and use of technology and vulnerabilities related to artificial intelligence. Opportunities arise in developing differential diagnoses of asthma and COPD and in examining prognoses for the diseases more effectively. Malicious use, commercial data leaks and data security issues stand out among the threats. Although artificial intelligence applications provide great convenience in the outpatient treatment process for asthma and COPD diseases, precautions must be taken on a global scale and with the participation of international organizations against weaknesses and threats. In addition, there is an urgent need for accreditation for the practices to be carried out in this regard.

Representasi Pelecehan Seksual Terhadap Laki – Laki Dalam Film Dear David

This study aims to determine the representation of sexual harassment against men in the film Dear David which has a lot of teenage problems in it to find out the researchers used descriptive qualitative research methods with a semiotic analysis approach John Fiske model with three-level social codes, namely the level of reality, level of representation, level of ideology. Data collection by watching and observing several scenes to understand the content of the film, documentation and cutting several scenes of film images that represent representations of sexual harassment of men through literature studies, namely, collecting previous reference journals, websites, the internet, theses, and books related to this research. The results of this study indicate that the representation of sexual harassment against men is seen in the film Dear David with a general form of verbal and nonverbal and sexual fantasies as a trigger for sexual harassment, about sexual harassment against men who become a normal thing and masculinity in men with normal can be a material for sexual harassment as a joke that leads to coercive nonverbal harassment. This representation is intended to be informative regarding sexual harassment against men that is still considered normal and the patriarchal influence of society on men who still think that men cannot be victims of sexual harassment.

Vacation Into Staycation Covid-19 Pandemic and Connotative Analysis of Staycation

Objective: To do the connotative analysis of the word Staycation from its origin till tourism trend of 2020 due to Covid-19 using Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory. Theoretical Framework: Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory of reading signs and their interpretation based on different cultures. Method: This study has adapted descriptive qualitative method and interpretative research design with content analysis technique to examine trends in related texts and to provide an insight into it. Results and conclusion: The results determine that the connotative meanings of word staycation are changed in two different scenarios. The literal (denotative) meaning of staycation stayed same, hence it has changed its connotative meaning depending upon its use in two individual time slots or the different contexts in which it is being used. Research implications: The connotative analysis of staycation under the perspective of Covid-19 and its impacts on tourism industry which has changed the connotative meaning of this word, will provide an insight that how and why different cultures, time frames and social scenarios change the connotations of words. Originality/Value: Overall, this research considers how words or signs change their meanings over time regarding changed circumstances and cultures.

Meaning-making and transformative engagement – notes on Gunther Kress’s social semiotic and multimodal approach to learning

Abstract Against the background of a longstanding collaboration between Gunther Kress’s research group in London and my own research group in Stockholm, I reflect, in this paper, on the role of Kress’s ideas in our joint development of a social semiotic, multimodal, and design-oriented approach to learning, an approach which sees learning as performative, and as an activity in which learners create their own learning paths. I first discuss how, for Kress, this path has three elements, the affordances of the learning resources available to the learner, the learner’s ‘interest’ which turns aspects of these resources into ‘prompts’ for learning, and the learner’s active interpretation and transformation of these aspects, the results of which can then be recognized and valued as ‘signs of learning’. However, recognizing learning also needs to take account of the dimension of time, so as to make it possible to assess whether learners have gained knowledges and skills they did not have at an earlier stage. I then discuss the role of context in Kress’s thinking about learning. For Kress, context is another vital aspect of a social semiotic theory of learning. On the one hand, Kress focuses here on the specific, unique contexts in which individual learners create their own learning paths. On the other hand, he recognizes that signs will always carry social and political relations. Reflecting on the dynamic relation between individual learners and the way institutions regulate ways of learning, I discuss both the continued role of institutional learning contexts and their hidden curricula, and the way emerging technologies facilitate individual learning paths and interactive, participatory forms of learning.
