Analysis Semiotic of Meaning Courage in Qaṣīdah (al-Burdah, al- Niffarīyah, al-Mutanabbī, and al-Ahtyar)

This study uses Roland Barthes' semiotic theory to identify the signifiers, signs, and connotative meanings of the word "courage" in these poems. This research uses a qualitative-descriptive approach and a content analysis research design. The data collection techniques used are literature reviews. Primary data is in the <em>Qaṣīdah al-Burdah, Qaṣīdah al-Niffarīyah, Qaṣīdah al-Mutanabbī, </em>and<em> Qaṣīdah al-Ahtyar</em>. Secondary data comes from readings related to the study. The data obtained is reduced, displayed, and verified. The findings show that the semiotic analysis of the word "courage" in the four <em>Qaṣīdahs</em> reveals a testament to the enduring value of courage in guiding Muslims to face challenges and uphold their beliefs in a changing world. The findings of this study offer valuable insights into the rich and nuanced understanding of courage in Islamic culture. These insights can contribute to a deeper appreciation of the Islamic ethical framework and its relevance in contemporary society. In addition, the methodology of this study demonstrates the applicability of semiotic analysis in unearthing deeper meanings embedded in literary and cultural texts.</strong><strong></strong></p><p> </p></td></tr></tbody></table>

Cultural Characteristics of Female Hero Images in Intangible Cultural Heritage Films

In Chinese films with intangible cultural heritage themes, female images are an indispensable presence. Particularly, several renowned female hero figures derived from folklore literature, such as Liu Sanjie, Ashima, and Hua Mulan, stand out as symbols of both traditional Chinese heroines and the cultural zeitgeist. This paper utilizes Roland Barthes' semiotic theory to analyze the characteristics of these three representative intangible cultural heritage-themed folk literature films. By employing text analysis methods, it examines the elements of costume, dialogue, setting, and plot in these films. These symbolic elements elucidate the development of female characters and cultural transformations, revealing how traditional culture is represented and transmitted in modern media. The paper also explores the crucial role and value of women in the preservation and inheritance of intangible cultural heritage, offering suggestions for better shaping the images of female heroes in intangible cultural heritage-themed films.

Masculine Violence in Turkish Folk Dances

As a social issue, violence continues to manifest and remains a current topic of academic research. Scientific studies mostly focus on the individual and societal dimensions of violence; however, studies that address violence in the context of everyday life practices remain limited. This study argues that violence has a masculine character as a result of gender inequality and within the framework of the masculinity-power relationality. On the other hand, this study considers folk dances as a product of social culture and views them as an effective form of non-verbal communication within society. The study is based on the claim that, in folk dances observed in formal or informal ceremonial events, which are part of everyday life and contain elements of violence, violence is legitimized as a spectacle. In this context, local folk dances from different regions of Turkey, performed exclusively by male dancers and portraying themes of heroism, victory, bravery, and courage, have been selected as examples. These include Trabzon Bıçak Horonu, Bursa Kılıç-Kalkan, Manisa Seğmen Sekmesi, Balıkesir Bengi, Erzurum Köroğlu Barı, Giresun Tüfekli Çandır Karşılaması, and Diyarbakır Şur-u Mertal. The violent content of these dances has been analyzed through the method of semiotic analysis. Weapons used in these dances, fast and rhythmic tunes, and rigid movements have been considered as indicators of violence. It has been concluded that these dances, admired and enthusiastically applauded, normalize violence. This study makes a significant contribution by addressing folk dances within the context of violence and aims to fill the gap in the literature in this field.

Name and Power Relation to African-American Identity in Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man

This study aims to explore the relationship between names and African-American identity in Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man. Through a qualitative descriptive analysis, the study investigates how power relations influence the construction of African-American identity in the novel. This study used semiotic approach by applying Charles Sander Peirce’s semiotic theory in examiningg the use of name, as well as sociological approach by applying Michel Foucault's concept of power relations in analyzing power relation to social identity. The findings reveal that names, while significant, are not the sole determinants of African-American identity. The study discovers that, after the Civil War, many African-American characters in the novel chose names of European origin in an attempt to avoid negative racial stigma and discrimination. Instead, the study finds that identity construction is primarily shaped by social categorization and comparison and that power relations play a crucial role in limiting positive representations of African-American identity. This study sheds new light on the relationship between names, power, and African-American identity in literature and provides insights into the ongoing discourse surrounding these important cultural and social issues.

Translation of English Instructive Images of COVID-19 in Social Media into Arabic: A Semiotic Study

This study investigates the intersemiotic translation process of specific images used to instruct people concerning COVID-19 disease that are posted on different social media. It also attempts to identify translation strategies employed by translators to convey the meaning from one non-verbal form into an Arabic verbal form. This study depends on a multimodal perspective that combines comprehending the connotative meaning of the image and analyzing it into a different verbal expressive form. It is hypothesized that translators are aware of the translation strategy through which the expression of an image is communicated successfully into Arabic verbal expressions. Translators employ Stetting's strategies that are restricted to media translation and journalistic translation, which is used for transferring the meaning of different forms of media. Five translators participated in this study to translate eight images into Arabic. This study concludes that a sign's detonative and connotative meanings are rendered, whether positively or negatively, to transfer the meaning, whether directly or indirectly.

Investigating the visual content of a commercialized academic listening test: Implications for validity

As incorporating visual modes in listening tests is gradually gaining traction in second language (L2) assessment, the inclusion of such visuals brings up questions about the role of visual modes in meaning-making during listening and test validity. In this study, we investigated the visual features of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) listening test through the application of the social semiotic multimodal framework. Our corpus comprised 300 visuals from 256 academic listening testlets published between 1996 and 2022. Unlike the past studies of social semiotic multimodal analyses that relied on qualitative methods, our study adopted a series of visualization and quantitative statistical analysis of frequency and dispersion measures, using the general linear model to examine the visuals from a social semiotic multimodal perspective. The results revealed significant variation in the visual structures of the testlets. Through applying a post-hoc analysis, we further proposed recommendations for further research on multimodal materials in listening assessment and discussed the implications of the observed variation for the validity of the IELTS listening test. This study may be considered one of the first attempts to examine L2 listening assessment from a social semiotic multimodal perspective that may inspire more investigations on multimodal listening.

Social marketing is a form of marketing created to address various social issues in society. Basically, social marketing has the same principles as commercial marketing in general. Both are forms of persuasive communication programs, where commercial marketing aims to gain financial profits, while social marketing aims to shape changes in behavior, both individuals, groups and social order. Researchers will further explore the moral message content of Consumer Behavior Public Service Advertisements contained in Bagas Dwi Rizqi Hidayat's YouTube content in a content analysis review. The theories used are mass media theory, analysis theory, moral messages, messages, morals, public service advertising theory, advertising, consumer behavior, factors causing consumer behavior, social media, YouTube, semiotic theory, Roland Barthes semiotics. The type of research taken by researchers is descriptive qualitative. The research data collection stage is carrying out the process of observation, documentation and literature research, data reduction results, formulating the problem, presenting the data, which is analyzed by the researcher until the stage of drawing conclusions. The author took five scenes to fulfill the needs of research conducted by researchers based on Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis which emphasizes the search for meaning of denotation, connotation and myth. Based on the results of this research, the researcher concluded that the Public Service Advertisement "Consumptive Behavior" directly describes events in society, especially the behavior of Indonesian people in shopping to the point of ignoring their own needs.

A Multimodal Study of Selected Campaign Posters of All Progressives Congress Presidential Candidate in Nigerian 2023 General Elections

The relevance of multimodal features of campaign posters in disseminating intended information to the Nigerian electorate during elections is the focus of this research. The study examines six selected political campaign posters of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 General Elections conducted in Nigeria. The posters, technically designed, are analysed with a view to highlighting their visual and linguistic components. The analysis is also intended to determine their effectiveness in persuading the electorate to vote for the candidate. The posters are chosen because they symbolically express the candidate’s and his party’s identity and ideology. The study adopts the social semiotic theory of Kress and van Leeuwen (2006) to analyse data sourced from Facebook and WhatsApp. The data are synthesised based on insights from the adopted theory. The paper reveals that Bola Ahmed Tinubu can disseminate information and project his political ideology on the minds of the electorate through visual and non-visual messages contained in the posters. The study concludes that the campaign posters of Bola Ahmed Tinubu contributed to influencing the decision of some Nigerian electorate to vote for him in the 2023 General Elections.The study recommends that future researchers can investigate the relevance of campaign posters in disseminating intended messages to the electorate in other elections conducted in Nigeria.

SIMBOL MASKULINITAS DALAM ORNAMEN BUDAYA BUGIS DI FILM TARUNG SARUNG: ANTARA TRADISI DAN MODERNITAS

The film Tarung Sarung is a cinematic work that highlights the richness of Bugis culture in Makassar, Indonesia. This film depicts the masculinity of Bugis men through characters and settings that highlight the attributes of courage, strength and honor. The main character in this film is depicted as an ordinary young man from the city who develops over the course of the story into a warrior skilled in martial arts. This research aims to analyze the symbols of masculinity in Bugis cultural ornaments in the film Tarung Sarung and find out the meaning of the symbols of masculinity represented. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic analysis method. This research identifies and analyzes the meaning of symbols of masculinity represented in Bugis cultural ornaments in the film Tarung Sarung. The research results show that the symbols of masculinity in the film Tarung Sarung are closely related to the cultural and social values that are highly upheld by the Bugis community. These symbols emphasize the role of men in various aspects of life, from the family to the wider community. Strength, resilience, leadership, authority, wisdom, and discipline are central themes in this representation, showing that masculinity in Bugis culture is closely related to the ability to protect, defend, lead, and maintain cultural values. This research provides several suggestions for developing further studies by exploring the representation of symbols of masculinity in other cultures, combining various analytical methods for a more comprehensive understanding, and examining audience acceptance of representations of masculinity in films.

A semiotic analysis of the novel "Cantik itu Luka" by Eka Kurniawan

Literary work is the arrangement of concepts that are imagined into writing that has aesthetic and moral values. In addition, literary works must be able to produce beautiful works of art. Many elements are involved in the creative process of literary works, including science, insights, thoughts, beliefs, and real experiences, as well as elements of the author's imagination. Besides having structural elements, novels also have semiotic elements, which study the structures, rules, and conventions that make signs have meaning and significance. This research aims to identify the semiotic elements in Eka Kurniawan's novel "Cantik Itu Luka". In this study, researchers used semiotic theory according to the views of Charles Pierce. After researching, the novel "Cantik itu Luka" by Eka Kurniawan shows a lot of semiotic word usage , such as icon (topeng wayang, pabrik, kucing hitam), index ( jejak kaki di hutan, hujan ders, merokok), and symbol ( bunga, api, rokok). Researchers use a qualitative descriptive method, or a descriptive method accompanied by analysis activities, to obtain data. The data was obtained by reading Eka Kurniawan's book "Beautiful Is Hurt" and analyzing it semiotically, finding many explicit signs. Utilizing this analysis, readers should be educated to appreciate literary works and understand the semiotic system in them.

MAKNA TANDA KOMUNIKASI INTERPERSONAL AYAH DAN ANAK PADA FILM NANNY MCPHEE: SEMIOTIKA ROLAND BARTHES

Recognizing film as a potent medium of expression, the research underscores the profound impact of visual and auditory storytelling in conveying intricate messages through language used. Through the lens of Roland Barthes semiotic theory, this research endeavors to unravel the complexities embedded within familial communication, especially using informal language. Drawing upon theories of mass communication, media studies, and interpersonal dynamics, the qualitative methodology employed in this study entails a meticulous examination of 20 pivotal scenes encapsulating father-child interactions. Viewing Nanny McPhee through a semiotic lens unveils layers of meaning, encompassing denotation, connotation, and myth. Over a span from August 28, 2023, to November 10, 2023, the researcher meticulously observed and analyzed the nuances of familial communication depicted in the film. By capturing and dissecting scenes through Barthes theoretical framework, the study unveils prevalent themes such as misunderstandings, self-centeredness, and the repercussions of ineffective communication within family dynamics. Drawing from the research findings, it can be concluded that within the narrative of Nanny McPhee, a plethora of communication pitfalls emerge, including (1) instances of misunderstanding, (2) a pronounced focus on self-interest, (3) a reluctance to entertain external perspectives, (4) unilateral decision-making devoid of discourse, and (5) an overall deficiency in familial communication. Furthermore, the absence of paternal guidance and attention looms large, wielding considerable influence over the behavioral and developmental trajectories of the children depicted in the film.

Cultural and Creative Design and Development Driven by Cultural Semiotics Hunan Zhuzhou as an Example

The purpose of this paper is to explore the application of cultural semiotics theory in the design and development of cultural and creative products, taking Zhuzhou, Hunan Province, as an example. By analyzing the rich cultural resources of Zhuzhou, the study extracts and re-designs cultural symbols with local characteristics, and then applies them to the design and development of cultural and creative products. Starting from the policy background, the study demonstrates the necessity of cultural semiotics-driven cultural and creative design and its significance to social and economic development. Through case studies, this paper elaborates on the extraction process, design principles, and specific application of Zhuzhou's cultural symbols in cultural and creative products, aiming to provide theoretical support and practical reference for the innovation and development of cultural and creative industries.

Spatial Semiotics in Pre-Islamic Arabic Poetry: The Study Case of Suspended Odes

Spatial structure plays an important role in the seven suspended odes, "Mu'allaqat," being tightly interrelated by sequential compositional manifestations to the narrative format of the circular journey through the spatial nature of the Arabian Peninsula. This is because they denote a compiled configuration with clarity and profundity regarding this systematic representation. Literary rhetoric bestows upon them distinctiveness, illumination, and embellishment. The research branches into two paths, demarcating the spatial signs into two forms: static space and interactive space. To capture the meanings of these two spaces through the interpreter of each sign, it requires a comprehensive excavation of the archaeological and historical foundations of civilization. The initial stages of cultural forms incorporate the spatial structure of the Arabian Peninsula and serve as the foundational cornerstone for the semiotic analysis, since the effectiveness of interpreting the markers of spatial structure highlights the interaction between the signifier and the signified. The formats of the suspended odes embody multifaceted depictions among the poets of the lengthy verses. Semiotic interpretation contributes to improving the discursive nature of the sign, as the spatial model archetype in the suspended odes finds its pre-eminence in literary semiotics.

Semiotic Analysis Found in Selected Christopher Nolan’s Movie Posters

This study aims to analyze semiotic signs in two of Christopher Nolan’s movie posters; Interstellar and Oppenheimer. The method used in descriptive qualitative using Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory: denotation, connotation and myth. The data of two posters Interstellar (2014) and Oppenheimer (2023) were taken from Cinematerial website which was selected and identified following Barthes’ (1972) theory of semiotics. The findings yield a total of 27 data that consists of; 11 denotations, 11 connotations, and 5 myths. Through analyzing these signs, we can gain insight into the films’ narratives, plot, and the art direction of the movie poster design as a communication tool. It can be concluded that semiotic analysis gives a valuable approach to understanding the deeper meanings of visual media. As such, different individual’s experience or cultural background can develop their own meaning of the posters.

Representasi Karakter Alpha Female Dalam Drama Korea Queenmaker

Korean dramas or (Drakor) have become a global phenomenon, gaining widespread popularity around the world. They are recognized not only as entertainment but also as complex reflections of social dynamics. The presence of Alpha Female characters in Drakor signifies support for gender equality and indicates societal shifts in views on women's roles in various aspects of life. This study aims to understand the representation of Alpha Female characters in the Korean drama Queenmaker hoping to gain new insights into societal perceptions of women beyond the domestic sphere. Using a qualitative approach and Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic analysis, the research found that Alpha Female characters exhibit leadership, confidence, and strength in facing challenges. From Peirce's perspective, these characters become important symbols that reinforce women's roles in fighting injustice and advocating for moral values. The findings underscore that Drakor is not just entertainment, but also a mirror of social realities that significantly influence perceptions of gender equality, expanding our understanding of women's roles in popular culture and the importance of gender equality in society.

Penggambaran Perselingkuhan Pada Web Series Layangan Putus

At the end of 2021, Layangan Putus web series, which is based on the true story of a woman, went viral and was liked by many people. Layangan Putus tells the story of a harmonious domestic life that begins to fall apart with the emergence of a third person, the relationship eventually becomes a toxic relationship. This study aims to determine of infidelity in the web series Layangan Putus by using a qualitative descriptive method based on the theory of Social Reality Construction by analyzing signs based on Peirce's semiotic analysis, namely sign, object and interpretant. The results of this study show a picture of Aris's infidelity such as betrayal, having intimate relationships, giving gifts, hugging and kissing other women besides his wife.

Unveiling the Strategy Behind Blackfishing: Kim Kardashian's Instagram and the New Beauty Discourse

As a fashion and beauty icon in America, Kim Kardashian is one of the public figures who supports the new beauty discourse. The emerging concept of new beauty in America challenges conventional limits for the delineation of beauty. This idea emphasizes that beauty is not limited by skin color, body shape, age, and hairstyle; instead, it emphasizes the need of embracing of natural body. This study examines how Kim Kardashian's personal Instagram posts from 2014-2023 showcases new notions of beauty via the lens of semiotic theory by Barthes (1964) and the concept of blackfishing. New forms of beauty discourse displayed by Kim Kardashian are accused of being blackfishing by excessively darkened skin, curvy body shapes, full lips, and hair. According to the findings of this study, there is a sense of ambivalence towards black women's bodies. Consequently, white people have internalized certain characteristics of black bodies without appreciating the unique qualities of black women. Kim Kardashian promotes a new beauty discourse that is considered blackfishing through her collaboration with the fashion and beauty industry and building her own cosmetics business. This demonstrates the participation of other influential individuals in the fashion business who endorse Kim's blackfishing appearance so that this appearance continues to appear in public and is normalized.

Representasi Premanisme dalam Film Pendek Loz Jogjakartoz (Analisis Semiotika Roland Barthes)

This research was conducted with the aim of knowing and explaining the representation of thuggery shown in the Loz Jogjakartoz short movie. Thuggery is one of the most familiar issues in Indonesia. This research is a qualitative research using analysis technique Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. The results of this research are the analysis denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings. In addition to a thug, thuggis behavior is also demonstrated by detective and liquor seller. The representation of thuggery in the Loz Jogjakartoz short movie depicts thugs who do not look exactly like the stereotypical image of thugs understood by society, which is that thugs must have tattoos, piercing, long hair, behave rudely, get drunk, and wear leather jackets. However in this movie, the representation of thuggery is only shown through aspects of having piercing, wear leather jacket, and behaving rudely.

Representasi Dampak Hoax Pada Film Budi Pekerti Karya Wregas Bhanuteja : Konten Viral

Misusing social media can make the process of verifying information abandoned and the information or news consumed by the public even more misleading. This study will discuss the representation of the impact of Hoaxes shown in the film Budi Pekerti by Wregas Bhanuteja. The aim is to analyze how the representation of the effects of Hoaxes depicted through viral content in the movie raises social issues today. This study uses a qualitative approach that is descriptive and uses the Roland Barthes semiotic analysis method through three stages that are presented in analyzing the meaning of signs, namely, the meaning of denotation, connotation, and myth, with data collection techniques, namely non-participant observation and documentation in the form of screen capture. The results of this research in the film Budi Pekerti present the impact of Hoaxes that can lead people to negative perceptions and negative comments quickly, cause cyberbullying and damaged reputation, cause the phenomenon of cancel culture, cause a domino effect and truth that is no longer important in a person's life. This research also provides awareness that you must be wise and ethical in social media by not being easily incited, finding out the truth first, not behaving impulsively, and having a sense of empathy.
