This paper describes a system that allows to tele-operate a semi-autonomous mobile robot through the intranet/Internet network. The software of this system has been written entirely in Java to achieve high platform-independence. The user interface runs as a Java applet within Web browsers. The experiments with the implementation on a Labmate mobile robot are described. Results of these experiments show the feasibility of Java as a tool for building user-friendly, networked robotic systems.
