Machine learning assisted sorting of active microswimmers.

Active matter systems, being in a non-equilibrium state, exhibit complex behaviors, such as self-organization, giving rise to emergent phenomena. There are many examples of active particles with biological origins, including bacteria and spermatozoa, or with artificial origins, such as self-propelled swimmers and Janus particles. The ability to manipulate active particles is vital for their effective application, e.g., separating motile spermatozoa from nonmotile and dead ones, to increase fertilization chance. In this study, we proposed a mechanism-an apparatus-to sort and demix active particles based on their motility values (Péclet number). Initially, using Brownian simulations, we demonstrated the feasibility of sorting self-propelled particles. Following this, we employed machine learning methods, supplemented with data from comprehensive simulations that we conducted for this study, to model the complex behavior of active particles. This enabled us to sort them based on their Péclet number. Finally, we evaluated the performance of the developed models and showed their effectiveness in demixing and sorting the active particles. Our findings can find applications in various fields, including physics, biology, and biomedical science, where the sorting and manipulation of active particles play a pivotal role.

Janus Particles in Acoustofluidic Setup: The Interplay between Self-Propulsion and Acoustic Trapping

Acoustic focusing of particle flow in microfluidics has been shown to be an efficient tool for particle separation for various chemical and biomedical applications. The mechanism behind the method is the selective effect of the acoustic radiation force on distinct particles. In this way, they can be selectively focused and separated. The technique can also be applied under stationary conditions, i.e., in the absence of fluid flows. In this study, the manipulation of self-propelled particles, such as Janus particles, in an acoustofluidic setup was investigated. In experiments with self-propelled Janus particles and passive beads, we explored the interplay between self-propulsion and the acoustic radiation force. Our results demonstrated unusual and potentially useful effects such as selective trapping, escape, and assisted escape in binary mixtures of active and passive particles. We also analyzed various aspects related to the behavior of Janus particles in acoustic traps in the presence and absence of flows.

Entropons as collective excitations in active solids.

The vibrational dynamics of solids is described by phonons constituting basic collective excitations in equilibrium crystals. Here, we consider a non-equilibrium active solid, formed by self-propelled particles, which bring the system into a non-equilibrium steady-state. We identify novel vibrational collective excitations of non-equilibrium (active) origin, which coexist with phonons and dominate over them when the system is far from equilibrium. These vibrational excitations are interpreted in the framework of non-equilibrium physics, in particular, stochastic thermodynamics. We call them "entropons" because they are the modes of spectral entropy production (at a given frequency and wave vector). The existence of entropons could be verified in future experiments on dense self-propelled colloidal Janus particles and granular active matter, as well as in living systems, such as dense cell monolayers.

Tunable pheromone interactions among microswimmers

Indirect interactions via shared memory deposited on the field ("field memory") play an essential role in collective motions. Some motile species, such as ants and bacteria, use attractive pheromones to complete many tasks. Mimicking these kinds of collective behavior at the laboratory scale, we present a pheromone-based autonomous agent system with tunable interactions. In this system, colloidal particles leave phase-change trails reminiscent of the process of pheromone deposition by individual ants, and the trails attract other particles and themselves. To implement this, we combine two physical phenomena: the phase change of a Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) substrate by self-propelled Janus particles (pheromone deposition) and the AC (alternating current) electroosmotic (ACEO) flow generated by this phase change (pheromone attraction). Laser irradiation causes the GST layer to crystalize locally beneath the Janus particles, owing to the lens heating effect. Under AC field application, the high conductivity of the crystalline trail causes a field concentration and generates ACEO flow, and we introduce this flow as an attractive interaction between the Janus particles and the crystalline trail. By changing the AC frequency and voltage, we can tune the attractive flow, i.e., the sensitivity of the Janus particles to the trail, and the isolated particles undergo diverse states of motion, from self-caging to directional motion. A swarm of Janus particles also shows different states of collective motion, including colony formation and line formation. This tunability enables a reconfigurable system driven by a pheromone-like memory field.

Selecting active matter according to motility in an acoustofluidic setup: self-propelled particles and sperm cells.

Active systems - including sperm cells, living organisms like bacteria, fish, birds, or active soft matter systems like synthetic "microswimmers" - are characterized by motility, i.e., the ability to propel using their own "engine". Motility is the key feature that distinguishes active systems from passive or externally driven systems. In a large ensemble, motility of individual species can vary in a wide range. Selecting active species according to their motility represents an exciting and challenging problem. We propose a new method for selecting active species based on their motility using an acoustofluidic setup where highly motile species escape from the acoustic trap. This is demonstrated in simulations and in experiments with self-propelled Janus particles and human sperm. The immediate application of this method is selecting highly motile sperm for medically assisted reproduction (MAR). Due to the tunable acoustic trap, the proposed method is more flexible than the existing passive microfluidic methods. The proposed selection method based on motility can also be applied to other active systems that require selecting highly motile species or removing immotile species.

Directed Autonomous Motion and Chiral Separation of Self-Propelled Janus Particles in Convection Roll Arrays.

Self-propelled Janus particles exhibit autonomous motion thanks to engines of their own. However, due to the randomly changing direction of such motion they are of little use for emerging nanotechnological and biomedical applications. Here, we numerically show that the motion of chiral active Janus particles can be directed, subjecting them to a linear array of convection rolls. The rectification power of self-propulsion motion here can be made to be more than 60%, which is much larger than earlier reports. We show that rectification of a chiral Janus particle's motion leads to conspicuous segregation of dextrogyre and levogyre active particles from a racemic binary mixture. Further, we demonstrate how efficiently the rectification effect can be exploited to separate dextrogyre and levogyre particles when their intrinsic torques are distributed with Gaussian statistics.

Forces that control self-organization of chemically-propelled Janus tori

Control of the individual and collective behavior of self-propelled synthetic micro-objects has immediate application for nanotechnology, robotics, and precision medicine. Despite significant progress in the synthesis and characterization of self-propelled Janus (two-faced) particles, predictive understanding of their behavior remains challenging, especially if the particles have anisotropic forms. Here, by using molecular simulation, we describe the interactions of chemically-propelled microtori near a wall. The results show that a torus hovers at a certain distance from the wall due to a combination of gravity and hydrodynamic flows generated by the chemical activity. Moreover, electrostatic dipolar interactions between the torus and the wall result in a spontaneous tilt and horizontal translation, in a qualitative agreement with experiment. Simulations of the dynamics of two and four tori near a wall provide evidence for the formation of stable self-propelled bound states. Our results illustrate that self-organization at the microscale occurs due to a combination of multiple factors, including hydrodynamic, chemical, electrostatic and steric interactions.

Probing surface-adsorbate interactions through active particle dynamics

Adsorbate molecules present in a reaction mixture may bind to and block catalytic sites. Measurement of the surface coverage of these molecules via adsorption isotherms is critical for modeling and design of catalytic reactions on surfaces. However, it is challenging to measure isotherms in solution in a way that is directly relevant to catalytic activity under reaction conditions, particularly since adsorbates may bind with an enormous range of surface affinity parameters. Here we used the motion of self-propelled catalytic Janus particles, which employ the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide fuel as a propulsion mechanism, to determine the effective surface coverage of thioglycerol, furfural, and ethanol on a platinum surface as a function of concentration in aqueous solution by measuring the decrease in active motion due to the blocking of active sites. For strongly adsorbing thioglycerol, this effective coverage was compared and contrasted to the total adsorbed amount measured using inductively-coupled plasma analysis. Demonstrating the broad applicability of this approach, the surface affinity of the three adsorbates spanned more than four orders of magnitude. For each species, the adsorbate-mediated attenuation of active motion occurred over a wide concentration range and was well-described by a Langmuir isotherm. The strongly interacting thioglycerol had the highest affinity towards the surface (Ka = 15.5 ± 4.3 mM−1) and fully deactivated the active particle motion at surface saturation. Furfural had an intermediate affinity (Ka = 0.42 ± 0.07 mM−1) but did not fully block H2O2 access to the surface at apparent saturation, consistent with a maximum fractional surface coverage of θmax = 0.67. Ethanol exhibited even lower affinity (Ka = 0.0025 ± 2x10-4 mM−1) and its coverage saturated at only θmax = 0.38. Analysis of isotherms at elevated temperatures enabled direct extraction of the enthalpies of adsorption. The degree of surface coverage at adsorbate saturation appeared to correlate with the relative energies of adsorption for the different adsorbate species and was consistent with adsorbate saturation of one of multiple active site populations towards H2O2 decomposition. Moreover, computational investigations into solvent effects on furfural adsorption showed good quantitative agreement with the experimental results. This work leverages unique properties of active particles to explore fundamental catalysis questions and demonstrates a novel paradigm for significant and experimentally accessible multidisciplinary research.

Hunting active Brownian particles: Learning optimal behavior.

We numerically study active Brownian particles that can respond to environmental cues through a small set of actions (switching their motility and turning left or right with respect to some direction) which are motivated by recent experiments with colloidal self-propelled Janus particles. We employ reinforcement learning to find optimal mappings between the state of particles and these actions. Specifically, we first consider a predator-prey situation in which prey particles try to avoid a predator. Using as reward the squared distance from the predator, we discuss the merits of three state-action sets and show that turning away from the predator is the most successful strategy. We then remove the predator and employ as collective reward the local concentration of signaling molecules exuded by all particles and show that aligning with the concentration gradient leads to chemotactic collapse into a single cluster. Our results illustrate a promising route to obtain local interaction rules and design collective states in active matter.

Transport of self-propelled Janus particles confined in corrugated channel with Lévy noise

The transport of a self-propelled particle confined in a corrugated channel with Lévy noise is investigated. The parameters of Lévy noise (i.e. the stability index, the asymmetry parameter, the scale parameter, the location parameter) and the parameters of the confined corrugated channel (i.e. the compartment length, the channel width and the bottleneck size) have joint effects on the system. There exist flow reverse phenomena with increasing mean parameters. Left distribution noise will induce −x directional transport and right distribution noise will induce +x directional transport. The distribution skewness will affect the moving direction of the particle. The average velocity shows complex behavior with increasing stability index. The angle velocity and the angle Gaussian noise have little effects on the particle transport.

Mechanisms of transport enhancement for self-propelled nanoswimmers in a porous matrix

Micro/nanoswimmers convert diverse energy sources into directional movement, demonstrating significant promise for biomedical and environmental applications, many of which involve complex, tortuous, or crowded environments. Here, we investigated the transport behavior of self-propelled catalytic Janus particles in a complex interconnected porous void space, where the rate-determining step involves the escape from a cavity and translocation through holes to adjacent cavities. Surprisingly, self-propelled nanoswimmers escaped from cavities more than 20× faster than passive (Brownian) particles, despite the fact that the mobility of nanoswimmers was less than 2× greater than that of passive particles in unconfined bulk liquid. Combining experimental measurements, Monte Carlo simulations, and theoretical calculations, we found that the escape of nanoswimmers was enhanced by nuanced secondary effects of self-propulsion which were amplified in confined environments. In particular, active escape was facilitated by anomalously rapid confined short-time mobility, highly efficient surface-mediated searching for holes, and the effective abolition of entropic and/or electrostatic barriers at the exit hole regions by propulsion forces. The latter mechanism converted the escape process from barrier-limited to search-limited. These findings provide general and important insights into micro/nanoswimmer mobility in complex environments.

Pair correlation of dilute active Brownian particles: From low-activity dipolar correction to high-activity algebraic depletion wings.

We study the pair correlation of active Brownian particles at low density using numerical simulations and analytical calculations. We observe a winged pair correlation: While particles accumulate in front of an active particle as expected, the depletion wake consists of two depletion wings. In the limit of soft particles, we obtain a closed equation for the pair correlation, allowing us to characterize the depletion wings. In particular, we unveil two regimes at high activity, where the wings adopt a self-similar profile and decay algebraically. We also perform experiments of self-propelled Janus particles and indeed observe the depletion wings.

Light-driven motion of self-propelled porous Janus particles

We introduce a versatile mechanism of light-driven self-propelled motion applied to porous Janus-type particles. The mechanism is based on the generation of local light-driven diffusio-osmotic (l-LDDO) flow around each single porous particle subjected to suitable irradiation conditions. The photosensitivity is introduced by a cationic azobenzene containing surfactant, which undergoes a photoisomerization reaction from a more hydrophobic trans-state to a rather hydrophilic cis-state under illumination with light. The negatively charged porous silica particles are dispersed in a corresponding aqueous solution and absorb molecules in their trans-state but expel them in their cis-state. During illumination with blue light triggering both trans-cis and cis-trans isomerization at the same time, the colloids start to move due to the generation of a steady-state diffusive flow of cis-isomers out of and trans-isomers into the particle. This is because a hemi-spherical metal cap partially sealing the colloid breaks the symmetry of the otherwise radially directed local flow around the particle, leading to self-propelled motion. Janus particles exhibit superdiffusive motion with a velocity of ∼0.5 μm/s and a persistence length of ca. 50 μm, confined to microchannels the direction can be maintained up to 300 μm before rotational diffusion reverts it. Particles forming dimers of different shapes can be made to travel along circular trajectories. The unique feature of this mechanism is that the strength of self-propulsion can be tuned by convenient external optical stimuli (intensity and irradiation wavelength) such that a broad variety of experimental situations can be realized in a spatiotemporal way and in situ.

Topological defects in active liquid crystals

A wide class of nonequilibrium systems comprising interacting self-propelled agents is termed active matter. The most relevant examples include suspensions of microscopic swimming organisms (bacteria, sperm cells, or unicellular algae), synthetic catalytic nanomotors, colloidal self-propelled Janus particles, and even macroscopic bird flocks, fish schools, or human crowds. The simplest and most studied realization of active matter is a suspension of microscopic swimmers, such as motile microorganisms or self-phoretic colloids. A liquid crystal, a highly-structured anisotropic environment with local molecular ordering ‘doped’ by a small amount of active component represents an interesting class of nonequilibrium materials with novel optical and mechanical properties. Singularities of local molecular orientation, or topological defects, play an important role in the spatiotemporal organization of active liquid crystals. This study surveys the most recent experimental and theoretical advances in the field of active liquid crystals and highlights connections with other nonequilibrium physical and biological systems.

Magnetic Janus Particles for Static and Dynamic (Bio)Sensing

Magnetic Janus particles bring together the ability of Janus particles to perform two different functions at the same time in a single particle with magnetic properties enabling their remote manipulation, which allows headed movement and orientation. This article reviews the preparation procedures and applications in the (bio)sensing field of static and self-propelled magnetic Janus particles. The main progress in the fabrication procedures and the applicability of these particles are critically discussed, also giving some clues on challenges to be dealt with and future prospects. The promising characteristics of magnetic Janus particles in the (bio)sensing field, providing increased kinetics and sensitivity and decreased times of analysis derived from the use of external magnetic fields in their manipulation, allows foreseeing their great and exciting potential in the medical and environmental remediation fields.

Multifunctional motion-to-color janus transducers for the rapid detection of sepsis biomarkers in whole blood

Self-propelled particles are revolutionizing sensing applications thanks to a unique motion-based signal generation mechanism in which biorecognition reactions are detected as changes in the velocity of the colloids. Here a new family of self-propelled multifunctional Janus particles is introduced that enables detecting changes in particle motion colorimetrically. The particles consist of an iron oxide core that provides color and magnetism, and a Janus coating that provides biospecific recognition and locomotive properties. In this approach, biomolecular interactions trigger changes in particle motion that are detected as variations in color when spotted on a piece of paper. These variations in color are then read and quantified with a custom-made smartphone app. The high surface area and magnetism of the particles makes them ideal building blocks for developing biosensors because they allow for the rapid capture of a target molecule and the removal of non-specific interactions. Biosensors engineered with the proposed multifunctional particles were able to detect the sepsis biomarker procalcitonin at clinically relevant concentrations within 13 min in whole blood, which is faster than other approaches requiring hour-long incubation steps under controlled conditions to detect the same biomarker in purified serum. The short assay time along with the point-of-need design makes these biosensors suitable for stratifying patients according to their sepsis risk level during triage independently of resource constraints.

Harnessing Medium Anisotropy To Control Active Matter.

Active matter is a wide class of nonequilibrium systems consisting of interacting self-propelled agents transducing the energy stored in the environment into mechanical motion. Numerous examples range from microscopic cytoskeletal filaments and swimming organisms (bacteria and unicellular algae), synthetic catalytic nanomotors, colloidal self-propelled Janus particles, to macroscopic bird flocks, fish schools, and even human crowds. Active matter demonstrates a remarkable tendency toward self-organization and development of collective states with the long-range spatial order. Furthermore, active materials exhibit properties that are not present in traditional materials like plastics or ceramics: self-repair, shape change, and adaptation. A suspension of microscopic swimmers, such as motile bacteria or self-propelled colloids (active suspensions), is possibly the simplest and the most explored realization of active matter. Recent studies of active suspensions revealed a wealth of unexpected behaviors, from a dramatic reduction of the effective viscosity, enhanced mixing and self-diffusion, rectification of chaotic motion, to artificial rheotaxis (drift against the imposed flow) and cross-stream migration. To date, most of the studies of active matter are performed in isotropic suspending medium, like water with the addition of some "fuel", e.g., nutrient for bacteria or H2O2 for catalytic bimetallic AuPt nanorods. A highly structured anisotropic suspending medium represented by lyotropic liquid crystal (water-soluble) opens enormous opportunities to control and manipulate active matter. Liquid crystals exhibit properties intermediate between solid and liquids; they may flow like a liquid but respond to deformations as a solid due to a crystal-like orientation of molecules. Liquid crystals doped by a small amount of active component represent a new class of composite materials (living liquid crystals or LLCs) with unusual mechanical and optical properties. LLCs demonstrate a variety of highly organized dynamic collective states, spontaneous formation of dynamic textures of topological defects (singularities of local molecular orientation), controlled and reconfigurable transport of cargo particles, manipulation of individual trajectories of microswimmers, and many others. Besides insights into fundamental mechanisms governing active materials, living liquid crystals may have intriguing applications, such as the design of new classes of soft adaptive bioinspired materials capable to respond to physical and chemical stimuli, such as light, magnetic, and electric fields, mechanical shear, airborne pollutants, and bacterial toxins. This Account details the most recent developments in the field of LLCs and discusses how the anisotropy of liquid crystals can be harnessed to control and manipulate active materials.

Visible Light Actuated Efficient Exclusion Between Plasmonic Ag/AgCl Micromotors and Passive Beads.

Insight is provided into the collective behavior of visible-light photochemically driven plasmonic Ag/AgCl Janus particles surrounded by passive polystyrene (PS) beads. The active diffusion of single Janus particles and their clusters (small: consisting of two or three Janus particles and large: consisting of more than ten Janus particles), and their interaction with passive PS beads, are analyzed experimentally and in simulations. The diffusivity of active Janus particles, and thus the exclusive effect to passive PS beads, can be regulated by the number of single Janus particles in the cluster. On the simulation side, the Langevin equations of motion for self-propelled Janus particles and diffusing passive PS beads are numerically solved using Molecular-Dynamics simulations. The complex interactions of both subsystems, including elastic core-to-core interactions, short-range attraction, and effective repulsion due to light-induced chemical reactions are considered. This complex mixed system not only provides insight to the interactive effect between active visible light-driven self-propelled micromotors and passive beads, but also offers promise for implications in light-controlled propulsion transport and chemical sensing.

Active Brownian particles driven by constant affinity

Experimental realizations of self-propelled colloidal Janus particles exploit the conversion of free energy into directed motion. One route is phoretic mechanisms that can be modeled schematically as the interconversion of two chemical species. Here we consider the situation when the difference of chemical potential between the two species (the driving affinity) can be assumed to be constant, and we derive the thermodynamically consistent equations of motion. In contrast to the standard model of active Brownian particles parametrized by a constant self-propulsion speed, this yields a non-constant speed that depends on the potential energy of the suspension. This approach allows to consistently model the breaking of detailed balance and the accompanying entropy production without non-conservative forces.

Phototaxis: Photogravitactic Microswimmers (Adv. Funct. Mater. 25/2018)

In article 1706660, Dhruv P. Singh, William E. Uspal, and co-workers demonstrate that self-propelled Janus particles move near a surface or against gravity in response to light. The sedimented colloids swim along the surface when illuminated with low intensity light. When the light intensity is increased above a threshold value, the active colloids lift off, moving against gravity and away from the light source. The same behavior is found in some swimming microorganisms.
