Getting the best out of your wet prime pump

Self-priming pumps are divided into two classes ‘wet’ and ‘dry prime. This article applies primarily to wet prime pumps. However, many of the points about installation and operation discussed by Dave Meister, director of engineering for Gorman-Rupp will also apply to dry prime pumps. Choosing the proper pump is the most critical element in getting good life and service out of a pump. Other factors include correct installation, priming limits and re-priming considerations.

In 1994, the Belgian company, Domo, a leading manufacturer of carpets and flooring, took over a caprolactam producing facility in Leuna, East Germany and decided to modernise the outdated old communist-inspired chemical complex. Caprolactam is one of the feedstock ingredients in fibre manufacturing for carpets but handling the product and its side products, cyclohexanone and hydroxylammonium sulphate, is notoriously difficult as the substances produce gas, which makes it very hard for standard centrifugal pumps to operate normally. Some modern heavy-duty self-priming chemical pumps were required for the upgrade project.

COMBINED SKIMMER-BARRIER HIGH SEAS OIL RECOVERY SYSTEM1

ABSTRACT This paper describes the development of an oil recovery system to be used in conjunction with the U.S. Coast Guard's high seas oil containment barriers. The system was tested at the EPA's OHMSETT facility in 1975. Its oil recovery capability was shown to be good, with promise for yet better recovery when used on a large spill. Operational practicality was demonstrated in sea trials during May 1976, when the barrier was string towed, catenary towed, and moored in a tidal current. Because of the difficulty of handling large or complicated equipment in offshore conditions, a major design criterion was that the system be as simple as possible. Weir skimmers are particularly simple, but collection of more oil than water or air requires that the weirs follow the vertical motion of the waves. Simplicity and efficiency were achieved by utilizing the wave-following ability of the Coast Guard barrier design. Weirs were built into six struts at the center of a length of barrier, so that barrier deployment results in simultaneous skimmer deployment. To recover oil, it is only necessary to attach pump hoses to the barrier. Three double-acting diaphragm pumps are used. These self-priming pumps were specifically designed to pass any debris that can enter through the three-inch diameter suction hoses. Hydraulic drive was chosen so the pumps could be powered by the Coast Guard's ADAPTS diesel-engine-driven hydraulic power units.

Water-Ring Self-Priming Pumps

The method of operation of water-ring self-priming pumps is briefly described, with performance data of three designs of such pump. The mechanism by which these pumps produce their effect is discussed, and the conclusions reached indicate that it is impossible to anticipate their performance from their physical dimensions as can be done with a centrifugal pump. If, however, the head-discharge curve of any pump is established, and the horsepower required to overcome mechanical and disk friction is known or can be closely estimated, the horsepower taken by the pump at any point of its range can be calculated with a high degree of accuracy. Amongst the information included are graphs of air-pumping capacity and details of experiments to determine the best designs of rotor vane. Small changes in the shape of the vanes produce remarkable differences in performance.
