Diarylseleniumbis(Trifluoroacetates) and Chloro-(Trifluoro-acetates): Preparation and Characterization

Abstract Some new p-substituted diarylseleniumbis(trifluoroacetates), (RC6H4)2Se(CF3COO)2 where R = p-C2H5O, p-CH3O, p-Br, p-Cl and diarylseleniumchloro(trifluoroacetates), (RC6H4)2SeCl(CF3COO) where R = H, p-C2H5O, p-CH3O, p-CH3, p-Br or p-Cl have been prepared by the metathetical reaction between the respective selenium dichloride and silver trifluoroacetate. The compounds (RC6H4)2Se(CF3COO)2 are also obtained quantitatively by the reaction between the corresponding diarylselenoxide and tri-fluoroacetic anhydride. These compounds have been characterized by analytical data, X-ray powder diffraction, infra-red, 1H and 19F NMR and mass spectral studies.

Reactivity of α-arylseleno-aldehydes towards halogens and benzeneselenenyl chloride

Chlorination of α-seleno-aldehydes bearing an α-hydrogen gives selenium dichlorides which decompose into α-chloro α-seleno-aldehydes and α-chloroenal. Bromination, in all cases, and chlorination for the other α-seleno-aldehydes lead to the α-halogenoaldehydes.

The Molecular Structure of Selenium Dichloride, SeCl2, Determined by Gas Electron Diffraction

Abstract The electron diffraction pattern of the vapor from a sample of SeCl4 has been recorded with a reservoir and nozzle temperature of about 175 °C. The gas jet was found to consist of SeCl2 (80%) and Cl2 (20%). The bond distance in SeCl2 is ra(Se-Cl) = 2.157(3) Å, the valence angle <ClSeCl = 99.6(5)°.

Photoelectron spectra of selenium dichloride and diselenium dichloride

The He(I) photoelectron spectra of selenium dichloride, SeCl2, and diselenium dichloride, Se2Cl2, have been obtained by measurements on the gaseous products of the reaction of chlorine with powdered selenium at room temperature. The spectra correlate well with those of the more stable sulphur analogues and with the results of non-empirical valence-electron core-pseudopotential molecular orbital calculations.

The use of selenium(IV) chloride for the preparation of diarylselenium dichlorides

Two new synthetic routes for the preparation of diarylselenium dichlorides are reported both of which use selenium(IV) chloride as a starting meterial. In the first method, bis( p-methóxyphenyl) and bis( p-ethoxyphenyl)-selenium dichlorides are prepared by the reaction of SeCl 4 with anisole and phenetole respectively. In the second, diphenylselenium dichloride is prepared by the reaction of SeCl 4 with tetraphenyllead, a reaction in which the lead—carbon bond is cleaved. The far infrared and Raman spectra of the diarylselenium dichlorides are reported.

A gas-phase Raman study of the dissociation of selenium tetrachloride and the vibrational spectrum and molecular structure of selenium dichloride

Selenium tetrachloride is shown by gas-phase laser Raman spectroscopy to be fully dissociated in the vapour to selenium dichloride and chlorine, the vibrational spectrum of gaseous selenium dichloride being entirely consistent with that expected for a non-linear triatomic molecule.

Liquid hydrogen chloride solvent system. XII. Reactions of some sulfur, selenium, and tellurium compounds

The ions Me2SCl+ and MeSCl2+ have been prepared in hydrogen chloride solution from the oxidation of dimethyl sulfide and methanesulfenyl chloride with chlorine, or from methyl sulfur trichloride (MeSCl2+), and characterized as their tetrachloroborates and hexafluorophosphates. Et2SCl+BCl4− and EtSCl2+BCl4− have been prepared analogously. Dimethyl selenium and dimethyl tellurium solutions were oxidized with chlorine to dimethyl selenium dichloride and dimethyl tellurium dichloride.Methanesulfenyl chloride solution was ionized due to the protonation of sulfur, and not to the loss of a chloride ion. Methylchlorosulfonium hexafluorophosphate has been characterized. Methane- and ethane-sulfenyl chloride solutions reacted with boron trichloride giving (RSCl)2BCl3.Sulfur tetrachloride, selenium tetrachloride, and tellurium tetrachloride were sparingly soluble and showed no acidic or basic properties in the solvent. Sulfur monochloride, sulfur dichloride, selenium monochloride, and tellurium dichloride were non-basic in solution.The new compounds, Me2S2.BCl3 and Me2Te.BCl3, have been prepared and characterized.

Dipole moments and structure of some organoselenium compounds

The dipole moments of di- p-tolyl selenide (1.74 D), di- p-tolyl selenide (1.00 D), di- m-tolyl selenide (1.66 D), di- p-anisyl selenide (2.35 D) and di- p-tolyl selenium dichloride (3.69 D) have been determined in benzene at 35°. The results are analysed in terms of mesomeric effects and internal rotation in these systems. The dipole moments of a few aliphatic selenides have been theoretically evaluated.
