Non-linear response of confined concrete beam-column structures under horizontal loading

In this study, a behavior law for confined concrete is considered with the introduction of transverse reinforcement to increase the compressive strength of concrete, using the model of Mander et al. This model integrates the confinement effects provided by transverse reinforcement, enhancing the load-bearing capacity of concrete under compressive stress. A pushover analysis is carried out on a full-scale, four- levels structure, using the N2 method. This advanced technique combines non-linear static analysis with inelastic response spectra. Using this approach, the structure's seismic performance can be estimated, accounting for its ductility and the non-linear effects at each loading stage. The inelastic response spectra are adjusted using reduction factors based on the structure's capacity to dissipate seismic energy through inelastic deformations. By varying the confinement rate of the concrete sections, different performance points of the structure can be obtained. The confinement ratio is a crucial parameter influencing the ductility and strength of confined concrete. Closer spacing of transverse reinforcement increases the confinement ratio, which improves the concrete's deformation capacity and ultimate strength. The results show the effect of the behavior law used to consider concrete confinement on the performance points of the structure. In particular, it is observed that increasing the confinement leads to significant gains in the strength and ductility of the structure. These results highlight the importance of optimally using transverse reinforcement to design structures that ensure their performance and safety under seismic loads.

Selection of 110 kV Prefabricated Steel Substations Considering Seismic Vulnerability in China

Prefabricated modular substations are expected to become the mainstream construction type for substations in China. However, there is a lack of scientific basis for structural selection and seismic performance evaluation. Taking a 110 kV substation as an example, this study compares the construction cost of cast-in situ reinforced concrete (RC) substations and prefabricated steel (PS) ones. Two types of PS structures are considered: one with H-section steel columns and the other with box-section steel columns. A seismic vulnerability analysis is performed to compare the probability distribution of various damage states of substation building structures under different seismic damage levels. Results indicate that the construction cost of PS structures is approximately 27.9% higher than that of cast-in situ concrete. When using H-section steel columns, there is a significant difference in the flexural stiffness in two horizontal directions, resulting in reduced seismic performance in the weak-axis direction. The construction cost of using box-section steel columns is slightly higher than that of the H-section steel case, but its seismic performance is significantly improved. Although the probability of slight and moderate damage states for the box-section steel column scheme is generally higher than that of the cast-in situ RC scheme, the probability of collapse is reduced. Thus, box-section steel columns are recommended for prefabricated modular substation building structures.

Energy-based seismic design method for seismically isolated structures with friction pendulum systems

Friction pendulum systems (FPSs) serve as effective isolators that can help ensure adequate seismic performance of structures against significant aftershocks. A commonly used method for FPS design is the equivalent static analysis method outlined in ASCE 7-22. However, this method risks underestimating the seismic performance of FPSs due to its inability to account for energy dissipation from multiple hysteresis loops exceeding two cycles. Moreover, it is not well-suited for designing FPSs with conical friction surfaces, which exhibit nonlinear elastic behavior and hysteresis. A straightforward solution to address these issues is to apply an energy-based seismic design method. In this study, we propose and analytically validate one such method tailored for seismically isolated structures employing FPSs. Our analysis considers FPSs with both spherical (ISF) and conical (ICF) friction surfaces. For ISFs, the design follows the energy-based seismic design method proposed by Akiyama, whereas, for ICFs, it is based on the energy input to the device and its geometric approximation to an ISF. The conclusions of this study are summarized as follows: (1) the proposed energy-based design method effectively predicts the maximum FPS deformation, facilitating a rough estimation of FPS size; (2) because the design assumes symmetrical seismic response of the isolation layer in both the positive and negative directions and the friction surfaces of the ISF and ICF are geometrically similar, in the proposed method, the maximum deformation of an isolation layer with a natural period greater than 2 s depends solely on the friction coefficient, regardless of the friction surface type; (3) to satisfy the relevant conditions, the appropriate FPS design range is determined through nonlinear analysis. The results of this study demonstrate that the proposed energy-based seismic design method provides a reliable and effective means of designing FPSs for enhanced seismic performance.

Beneficial and detrimental impacts of soil-structure interaction on seismic response of high-rise buildings

In the traditional design method, structures are usually assumed as rigid base structures without considering soil-structure interaction (SSI). However, whether the effect of SSI on the seismic performance of structures is beneficial or detrimental is far from consensus among researchers. Moreover, previous literature mostly concentrated on the seismic behaviour of mid-rise buildings and moment-resisting frames. Therefore, it is in real need to comprehensively investigate the seismic response of tall buildings considering SSI. In this study, a soil-foundation-structure model developed in finite element software and verified by shaking table tests is used to critically explore the effects of SSI on high-rise buildings with a series of superstructure and substructure parameters. The beneficial and detrimental impacts of SSI are identified and discussed. Numerical simulation results indicate the rise in the stiffness of subsoil can dramatically amplify the base shear of structures. As the foundation rotation increases, inter-storey drifts are increased, and base shears are reduced. In general, SSI amplifies the inter-storey drifts showing detrimental effects of SSI. However, as for the base shear, SSI exerts detrimental effects on most piled foundation cases as well as classical compensated foundation structures resting on Ce soil, whereas, for compensated foundation structures resting on soil types De and Ee, effects of SSI are beneficial since the base shear is reduced. Moreover, regarding buildings with different structural systems and foundation types, minimum base shear ratios considering the SSI reduction effect are presented.

Environmental impact of the vibration generated by the underwater shaking table of the National Facility for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NFEES)

Earthquake simulation shaking tables serve as the valuable tools for investigating the seismic performance of structures, yet they can generate excessive vibrations in surrounding environments during operation. The National Facility for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NFEES) in China, which is currently in the commissioning phase, will be the world's largest earthquake simulation research facility. Its experimental center consists of a 16 m × 16 m shaking table and two 6 m × 6 m underwater shaking tables (one movable). This study aims to investigate the environmental impact of the vibration generated by the fixed underwater shaking table. Initially, the vibrations of the surrounding ground, shaking table foundations, and adjacent simulation center are tested using the sinusoidal full-load and full-acceleration excitations generated by the shaking table. Upon analyzing the test results, it is observed that the peak ground acceleration (PGA) in the short side direction of foundation attenuates rapidly for high-frequency loading, with a maximum acceleration attenuation up to 55.95 % at distances of 0 m–20 m. The maximum acceleration of the foundation occurs at the edge of the shaking table and significant differences in acceleration are observed at various points across the foundation. The VLZmax of the simulation center is 66.85 dB, which is lower than the limit requirements of the Chinese standard GB55016. Subsequently, an overall finite element model of the surrounding soil-shaking table foundations-adjacent simulation center is established. Following the validation of the numerical model, the vibration isolation efficiency of the adjacent river course and the foundation isolation joint that separates the large shaking table foundation from the underwater shaking table foundation are assessed. Compared to the test results, numerical results show relatively minor discrepancies in the peak acceleration of the ground and the foundation, with maximum errors of 24.59 % and 21.11 %, respectively. The river course and the foundation isolation joint demonstrate better vibration isolation performance for short-wavelength waves, with a maximum vibration isolation efficiency reaching 64.71 % and 63.56 %, respectively.

Structural and non‐structural numerical blind prediction of shaking table experimental tests on fixed‐base and base‐isolated hospitals

AbstractBase‐isolated hospitals are frequently preferred to fixed‐base ones because of their improved seismic structural performance. Despite this, the question remains open on the advisability of using this modern seismic protection technology in preference to other conventional solutions, on the grounds of a holistic approach based on limiting non‐structural damage as well as continuity of service to the community in the aftermath of an earthquake. Two full‐scale four‐storey (fixed‐base) and three‐storey (base‐isolated) hospital buildings have been recently built and subjected to three‐dimensional shaking table tests at the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (Japan), with particular attention to evaluating and classifying functionality of non‐structural components and vital medical equipment. A two‐phase experimental campaign was carried out considering two earthquakes scaled at different intensity levels and applied along the horizontal and vertical directions. The current study aims to provide results of a numerical structural and non‐structural blind prediction of these hospital settings. A homemade numerical code is developed to account for lumped plasticity modelling of steel frame members and variability of the friction coefficient of spherical sliding bearings. Moreover, three non‐structural components are modelled in the fixed‐base structure: that is, elastic single degree of freedom systems representing two tanks filled with sand at the top floor; elastic beam elements for piping at the third floor; five‐element macro‐model for the in‐plane‐out‐of‐plane nonlinear response of partition walls at the first floor. The identification of predominant vibration periods of the fixed‐base structure is carried out using a homemade numerical code based on the continuous wavelet transforms in combination with the complex Morlet wavelet. Finally, the sliding and rocking motion of three items of medical equipment (i.e., incubator at third floor, dialysis machine at second floor and surgical bed at first floor) are analysed by means of a homemade numerical code, considering acceleration time histories of selected structural nodes of the fixed‐base structure.

Effect of U-Shaped Metallic Dampers on the Seismic Performance of Steel Structures based on Endurance-Time Analysis

Seismic performance of steel moment-resisting frames is investigated through the incorporation of U-shaped metallic dampers. The primary objective is to assess the effectiveness of these dampers in mitigating seismic responses by utilizing various analysis techniques. Two representative structural configurations (5 and 10-story) are studied in both damped and undamped states to reveal the impact of dampers on seismic response reduction. The study utilizes the endurance time analysis (ETA) method, known for its efficiency in evaluating structural seismic performance. To validate the analysis results, a benchmark comparison is made through nonlinear time history analysis (NTHA). Incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) is also conducted to assess structures’ intensity measures with respect to their damage intensity index. The findings demonstrate that U-shaped metallic dampers substantially reduce inter-story drift and story shear forces. Importantly, a close alignment between the results obtained from ETA and NTHA underscores the reliability of the former in assessing seismic performance with supplemental damping devices.

Elasto-Plastic Seismic Shear Distributions of Frame-Wall Structures

ABSTRACT In this study, theoretical and numerical methods were used to research seismic shear distributions of frame-shear wall structures under elasto-plastic conditions. The shear distributions of frame-shear walls were analyzed based on a simplified elasto-plastic analysis model of flexural shear. Based on a preliminary project, three groups of 2D models with different stiffness eigenvalues were designed and used to compare the shear distributions of whole structures and frames. The characteristics of the shear distributions of structures and frames and the development of plastic hinges were analyzed, and the rationality of shear adjustment based on Chinese standards was discussed from the perspectives of structural design, seismic performance and collapse resistance. The results revealed obvious differences between shear distributions of structures caused by strong vs. frequent earthquakes. For strong earthquakes, the shear distributions tended to be evenly distributed with respect to height, while the shear force of the bottom story was significantly larger than that of the upper stories. This was mainly caused by the redistribution of plastic internal forces due to the development of plastic hinges. The shear adjustment of the frame usually affected the reinforcement in the beams rather than in the columns, which contradicted the design concept of strong columns – weak beams. Additionally, shear adjustment had little effect on the seismic performance and collapse resistance of structures. This paper suggests that by ensuring the ability of strong columns, weak beams and plastic hinges to rotate, shear force adjustment can be prevented.

Shaking table test of a dry-connection fully precast frame structure system

In view of the construction difficulties and ecological environment sensitivity of building construction in extremely cold and high seismic intensity areas, a new type of dry-connection fully precast frame structure system was proposed. The connections of the structure are easy to assemble, which can greatly improve the construction efficiency and provide convenience for the upgrading and replacement of components during service. In order to provide essential insights into the seismic performance of the dry-connection precast structure, a three-story precast frame structure specimen with a scale ratio of 1/2 was designed, constructed, and tested on a shaking table subjected to a series of ground motions with increasing seismic intensities. The connections of the specimen structure include beam-column joint, beam-floor joint and column-foundation joint, precast components were processed in the factory and assembled in the laboratory. The vibration characteristics, damage development, acceleration response and displacement response of the structure were investigated. The experimental results illustrated the excellent seismic performance of the structure with sufficient strength and relatively confined damage. The gradually decreasing frequency and increasing damping ratio were attributed to the slippage and plastic deformation of the connectors and the cracking of beam concrete. And the maximum story drift under rare earthquake of intensity 8 was within the design limit, indicated that the precast frame structure could achieve the performance target of no collapse under severe earthquakes. The data of this test provided support for further study on the design methods and numerical modeling of dry-connection fully precast frame structure systems.

Seismic performance loss evaluation of reinforced concrete frame structure based on updatable damage model

AbstractAs structural seismic damage develops, the internal force transfer and damage weight relationship of component are constantly changing, and the fixed weighted coefficient is adopted by the traditional weighted method, which cannot reflect the changes in the structural damage state. The structure is a network formed by connecting a large number of components, and the network state undergoes complex changes with the development of component damage. In this paper, a novel method for component damage transfer to structural seismic performance loss is proposed using network shortest paths. First, a directed weighted complex network based on force transfer direction and component stiffness is constructed for reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures. Then, the component damage is calculated by the degradation of its stiffness and is used to update the weight distribution of the damage network. Finally, the structural performance loss is evaluated by the degradation of damage network efficiency. Results show that the proposed method with an updated component weight relationship is able to reflect the true loss of structural performance according to the finite element dynamic elastic‐plastic analysis of RC frame structures. For the structural performance loss degree (none, slight, moderate, severe, complete), the proposed method and the weighted method both exhibit high accuracy (number correctly classified/total number of samples) when structural performance loss is none, severe, or complete loss. The accuracy of the proposed method is significantly higher than that of the weighted method when structural performance loss is slight and moderate loss, with 58.1% and 84.2% improvement, respectively. For structural typical damage modes (global, local, and weak layer damage mode), the proposed method and the weighted method both exhibit high accuracy when structures exhibit global damage mode. The accuracy of the proposed method is significantly higher than that of the weighted method when structures exhibit local and weak layer damage mode. The accuracy of the proposed method is stable at 95.2%, while the accuracy of the weighted method is 76.2% and 70.2%, respectively. Overall, the weighted method exhibits high accuracy when structural performance loss is less than slight loss or greater than moderate loss, while the proposed method exhibits high accuracy throughout the entire process of structural performance loss, especially in moderate loss.

New Zealand specific consequence functions for seismic loss assessment

Quantitative seismic loss assessment has become an increasingly popular tool for evaluating the seismic performance of structures. The growth in popularity is largely in response to a desire to look beyond the traditional life safety performance objective and instead consider also economic losses and downtime due to earthquakes. A key step in the loss assessment calculation process is relating damage in both structural and nonstructural components to appropriate repair strategies and subsequently repair costs and repair times. This is achieved through the use of so-called consequence functions, which in this paper are derived specifically for the New Zealand context. Furthermore, a framework is established for other researchers and professional engineers to continue to build on and improve the initial dataset. It is shown that using New Zealand specific consequence functions can have a noticeable effect on estimates of expected annual loss when compared to a benchmark case using consequence functions from FEMA P-58. The opportunity is also taken to evaluate the impact of recent updates to the New Zealand National Seismic Hazard Model, with the results for a case-study building in Wellington indicating that the change in hazard has a far more significant effect on estimates of loss when compared to the choice of different consequence functions.

Post-Fire Seismic Performance of Concrete-Filled Steel Tube Frame Structures Considering Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI)

Currently, reinforced thin-walled irregular steel tube concrete frame structures have been applied in engineering, but there are few researches on the seismic performance of this type of structures after fire. The seismic performance of structures after fire is generally carried out based on rigid foundation conditions. Therefore, it is of certain engineering and theoretical value to study the seismic performance considering the SSI (soil–structure interaction) in this paper. ABAQUS is employed to establish the finite element models of the reinforced thin-walled irregular steel tube concrete frame structure considering the SSI after a fire. The paper analyzes the impact of different site conditions and fire durations on the structural natural vibration period, maximum acceleration, inter-story shear force, and maximum inter-story displacement angle. The results show that the consideration of the SSI increases the basic natural vibration period of the structure by 10–30%. The softer the soil and the longer the fire duration, the more significant the increase. For harder soil, lower seismic intensity, and shorter fire duration, the acceleration assigned to the structure and foundation after considering the SSI is smaller than the results assuming a rigid foundation. The change in inter-story shear force is mainly determined by the acceleration of the structure and foundation. The inter-story displacement angle increases when considering the SSI, and the increase is more significant with softer soil, larger seismic wave acceleration amplitude, and longer fire duration.

Conservativeness Study on the Seismic Analysis Method for Research Reactor Plant Structure Based on TMSR-LF1

The seismic performance analysis of research reactor plants is crucial for ensuring the safety of the entire reactor system. This paper analyzes the plant structure seismic performance of the 2WMt Thorium Molten Salt Reactor-Liquid Fuel 1 (TMSR-LF1) at the Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences under the action of frequent earthquakes, fortification earthquakes, and rare earthquakes was analyzed by finite element software PKPM based on the seismic design method of civil code +1°. On this basis, a comparison was made between the seismic responses of structural pushover analysis and elastoplastic time history analysis under the action of rare earthquakes, and the conservatism of these two commonly used methods for elastoplastic analysis was systematically analyzed. The results indicate that the TMSR-LF1 plant structure exhibits well bearing and deformation capacity. It meets the seismic design goal of “no damage under small earthquakes,” “no unrepairable damage under medium earthquakes,” and “no collapse under large earthquakes (using static pushover analysis),” and the critical regions are entirely within the elastic range. Furthermore, the analysis reveals that the elastoplastic time history analysis method produced a significantly higher seismic response than the pushover analysis method, which indicates the conservativeness of the time history method. Therefore, it is recommended to use the elastoplastic time history analysis method to evaluate the seismic performance of research reactor plants under rare earthquake actions. The research in this paper provides important references for the seismic performance analysis of other Class II research reactor plants.

Seismic performance of structure equipped with a new rubber bracing damper system

Nowadays, vibration energy absorption devices are widely implemented in many buildings subjected to severe vibration due to natural hazards, such as earthquakes, strong winds, and typhoons. Recently, viscous dampers have been commonly used in many structures as the most conventional damper type. However, the high maintenance cost resulting from oil leakage from cylinder seals has prompted researchers to seek an alternative system to viscous damper systems. Therefore, the main aim of this research is to develop a new rubber bracing damper (RBD) system by implementing high damping rubber material as a viscoelastic material to be installed in framed structures as diagonal bracing members. This will help dissipate vibration effects on the structure. To achieve this, the initial design for the RBD device has been developed, and finite-element simulation has been conducted to evaluate the behavior of the proposed RBD under various dynamic loading conditions. To define the viscoelastic material properties in finite-element modeling, high damping rubber material has been produced and experimentally tested to determine the numerical model of the material. Subsequently, the test data were utilized to develop the analytical model of the RBD device, and its performance was evaluated by applying cyclic loads and conducting nonlinear analysis. Furthermore, a series of cyclic dynamic tests with various displacement amplitudes and frequencies have been conducted on the prototype of the RBD device based on the finite-element results. Finally, to analyze the dynamic behavior of the structure equipped with RBD, a finite-element model of a three-story reinforced concrete frame structure furnished with RBD dampers has been developed. The response of the structure has been evaluated under seismic loads, and a parametric study has been conducted to investigate the response of the structures with various rubber properties. The numerical analysis results indicated that the implementation of the RBD device leads to a reduction in the occurrence of plastic hinges and lateral displacements of the structure by up to 69%. This demonstrates the efficiency of the RBD device in diminishing the seismic load effect on the structure’s response.

Proposal for a novel technological damper system (TDS) for the retrofit of reinforced concrete frame structures

Considering the severe earthquakes that have occurred worldwide, it has been observed that even buildings which are constructed in compliance with the seismic regulations, have suffered heavy damage or collapsed. Similarly, in earthquake on February 6, 2023, in Kahramanmaraş, Turkey, many old and new structures were damaged or even collapsed. This situation has compelled researchers to focus on the most current and technological applications for earthquake protection. In the latest research topics, there has been a growing emphasis on the impact of new technological systems targeted at improving the seismic performance of structures constructed with reinforced concrete systems, given the notable occurrence of collapsed buildings with such structural systems in this earthquake. In this study, the developed Technological Damper System (TDS) was employed to enhance the earthquake performance of reinforced concrete structures. TDS is a versatile and adjustable friction-type damper. For this reason, two identical ½ scaled reinforced concrete frames were fabricated for the study, one representing a traditional structure as a reference frame (REF), and the other a frame with the TDS device. After applying quasi-static cyclic tests to the frames, the force-displacement, and force-rotation relationships, as well as energy dissipation capacities were determined for both frames. In addition, the damage conditions of the columns during the tests were assessed based on the plastic rotation limit conditions outlined in Turkish Building Earthquake Code (TBEC 2018). As a result, the frame retrofitted with the TDS device exhibited a significant increase in horizontal load-carrying capacity, ranging from 42.04% to 75%, when compared to the REF. Additionally, it was observed that energy consumption increased between 85% and 220%. The REF reached significant damage levels at 1% and 2% story drift ratios and an advanced damage state at about 3%, in accordance with TBEC 2018. Finally, the behavior of the frame retrofitted with TDS considerably improved according to REF and it reached a significant damage state at 3% story drift ratio.

Improvement effects of knee-bracing friction dampers on cyclic behavior of steel joints in antique buildings

To inherit the unique characteristics of historical timber architecture, the steel antique building (SAB) imitating ancient Chinese timber structures has been constructed using contemporary steel materials and fabrication techniques. These buildings typically exhibit premature yielding cracks and weak energy dissipation at the beam ends under seismic loads. To improve the seismic performance of SABs, two different types of friction dampers were deployed at the knee-bracing region around beam-column joints in SABs. First, cyclic loading tests on dampers indicate that both shear friction dampers and rotational friction dampers exhibit full hysteretic behavior, demonstrating an excellent and stable energy dissipation capacity. The friction coefficient of dampers with brass pads was theoretically calculated to be 0.35. Second, the quasi-static test showed that failure of steel joint specimens with knee-bracing dampers primarily occurred at replaceable angles in the beam-column connection region, which demonstrates that the repairability of steel joints in SABs can be greatly improved without overcomplicated labor. Adding knee-bracing dampers effectively postpones damage to the replaceable angles, which improves the strength, stiffness, and energy dissipation capacity of the steel joints significantly. The shear damper exhibits a more pronounced improvement in the overall structural seismic performance compared to the rotational damper with the same frictional sliding force. Moreover, numerical simulations showed that the strength of the proposed joints with knee-bracing friction dampers decreases with an increase in the axial compression ratio, while increasing the thickness of angles or the sliding force of dampers can effectively improve the seismic performance of the steel joints in SABs.

Modeling and Prediction of Nonstationary Ground Motions as Time–Frequency Images

Proper modeling of nonstationary characteristics of ground motions is critical in estimating the seismic performance of structures. The importance of ground motion nonstationarity is being increasingly recognized in seismic design codes and provisions. This paper develops a new method for predicting seismic ground motions in the joint time–frequency domain based on recorded ground motions. We treat wavelet energy maps of acceleration records as images and extract essential patterns from them using principal component analysis. These patterns are then linked to the seismic source, path, and site variables using general regression neural network. The resulting model predicts an image representing the expected evolutionary power spectrum conditioned on the input variables. An example application is presented using records from the Next Generation Attenuation of Ground Motions Database of the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Center. As opposed to conventional ground motion prediction models, the proposed approach retains the time domain characteristics of ground motions. The results show that the proposed model can predict significant patterns in the seismic energy distribution, acceleration time series, and 5% damped elastic spectral accelerations.

Study on seismic performance of nanometakaolin-reinforced fluororubber sector damper (NFSD)

In order to improve the mechanical performance of the core energy-dissipating material of the viscoelastic damper, a novel Nanometakaolin-reinforced Fluororubber Sector Damper (NFSD) is proposed for providing a strong guarantee for the seismic safety of the structure joints subjected to seismic earthquake. Firstly, in order to systematically study the shock absorption performance of NFSD, the core energy dissipation material(nano metakaolin reinforced fluororubber composite) of NFSD is prepared by melt blending method, and the vulcanization performance and microscopic mechanism of the nano composite are analyzed by vulcanization test and X-ray diffraction test. Secondly, the nanocomposite material is used as the core energy dissipation material, and NFSD based on nano reinforced fluororubber is proposed. Finally, the dynamic characteristics of NFSD and the structural seismic performance of NFSD controlled reinforced concrete (RC) frames are studied using refined finite element simulation methods. The research results indicate that 20 phr NMK increase the maximum torque MH of FKM by 20 %, while also shortening the scorching time t10 by 0.28 min. It means greatly improving the vulcanization performance of FKM. Compared to uncontrolled structures, NFSD reduces the peak displacement, interstory displacement angle, and maximum vertex acceleration of the 4-story RC structure by 16.2 %−67.4 %, 12.4 %−64.6 %, and 16.8 %−43 %, respectively. NFSD possesses excellent seismic absorption performance.

Prestressed partial single-layer twisted reticulated shell seismic performance assessment using endurance time

The endurance time analysis is a method for seismic analysis. This method uses a function with an increasing acceleration value as time passes to reflect the seismic performance of structures at various seismic intensities. It offers the advantages of small discrete and fast calculation. It has not, however, been researched in space structures. In this research, a prestressed partial single-layer twisted reticulated shell with a size of 66 m × 46 m was used as the research object, and the seismic performance of the structure was assessed using three endurance time analysis functions that were compared with the incremental dynamics analysis assessment results under twenty far-field ground motions and twenty near-field ground motions. With a maximum error of 0.011 m in the displacement response, the results indicate that the two methods of assessment produced similar results. In comparison to incremental dynamics analysis, the endurance time analysis reduced computation time by 90%.

Seismic performance of rubber-sand mixture as a geotechnical seismic isolation system using shaking table test

This paper presents a comprehensive investigation into the seismic performance of structures utilizing Rubber-Sand Mixture (RSM) as a Geotechnical Seismic Isolation (GSI) system. Shaking table tests were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the RSM layer in modifying the acceleration response and settlement of structures under dynamic loading. The effectiveness of the RSM layer was found to be influenced by various factors, including the rubber content, depth ratio (the RSM layer to the footing width), and ground compaction. The study considers a wide range of RSM depth ratios (0.1–0.8), providing valuable insights into the optimal design of buildings equipped with RSM. The experimental results demonstrate a significant reduction in acceleration response for low-rise and medium-rise buildings, as well as potential benefits for tall buildings with a large depth ratio. However, increasing the RSM thickness is accompanied by larger settlement, highlighting the need for a balance between reducing acceleration and controlling settlement. There is a limit to the effectiveness of the depth ratio beyond which, the de-amplification and final seismic settlement become less sensitive to changes in RSM layer thickness. The study reveals that the RSM layer exhibits a more pronounced reduction in acceleration response in loose ground conditions compared to denser ground conditions. However, even in denser ground, the inclusion of RSM layers contributes to improved seismic performance to a lesser extent. The findings align with prior studies, emphasizing the potential of RSM layers in mitigating the seismic response of structures. By appropriately incorporating RSM layers and considering site-specific factors, engineers can enhance the resilience of structures, leading to safer and more earthquake-resistant built environments.
