Abundance and distribution of microplastics in benthic sediments and Cladocera taxa in a subtropical Austral reservoir.

Pollution of the natural environment by microplastics has become a global issue in ecosystems as it poses a potential long-term threat to biota. Microplastics can accrue in high abundances in sediments of aquatic ecosystems while also contaminating pelagic filter feeders, which could transfer pollutants up trophic webs. We assess the abundance and distribution of microplastics in benthic sediments and Cladocera taxa in a subtropical Austral reservoir using a combination of geospatial techniques, physicochemical analyses, diversity indices, and multivariate statistics between two seasons (i.e., hot-wet and cool-dry). We found particularly high densities of microplastics during the cool-dry season for both sediments (mean 224.1 vs. 189 particles kg-1 dry weight) and Cladocera taxa (0.3 particles per individual). Cladocera microplastic shapes were dominated by fibers with high densities of the transparent color scheme. Pearson correlation results indicated that sediment microplastic abundances were negatively correlated with chlorophyll-a concentration, temperature, and resistivity, whereas they were positively correlated with pH and salinity during the hot-wet season, with no variables significant in the cool-dry season. Cladocera microplastic abundances were positively correlated with conductivity and salinity during the cool-dry season, but no variables in the hot-wet season. These findings provide insights into the role of reservoirs as microplastic retention sites and the potential for uptake and transfer from lower trophic groups. Characterization of the gassy sediment layer in shallow water using an acoustical method: Lake Kinneret as a case study

AbstractRemote characterization and parameterization of gassy sediments have significant environmental importance for quantifying the global methane budget and assessing its impact on climate change. Acoustic techniques that have been developed hold advantages over direct sediment sampling (e.g., using pressurized and frozen cores), as they permit comparatively quick and cost‐effective assessments over the large bottom areas. This paper proposes a non‐invasive acoustic method that allows simultaneous assessments of the free gas content () and the thickness () of a gassy layer in the aquatic surface sediments. The method is based on amplitude measurements and frequency analysis of the bottom reflection coefficient in the wide frequency band (300–3500 Hz). The spatial variability of and in freshwater Lake Kinneret (Israel) is studied, where the upper sedimentary layer is characterized by a high organic matter content, high methane production rates, and a large . The assessed values of and varied from 0.1% to 0.6%, and from 20 to 40 cm, respectively, depending on the location of measurements. These results are in reasonable agreement with gas void fractions measured directly in frozen sediment cores, where the depth‐averaged varied from to . The suggested methodology should have considerable practical implementation for remote spatiotemporal monitoring of shallow gassy sediments in aquatic ecosystems.

Influence of demographics, exposure, and habitat use in an urban, coastal river on tumor prevalence in a demersal fish

Neoplasia and associated tissue biomarkers in benthic fishes are commonly used to characterize effects of contaminated sediments in aquatic ecosystems. However, these fish are often migratory or partially-migratory, and thus assessing the effect of location-specific contamination is challenging because the fish will have a complex exposure history. We determined liver and skin neoplasia prevalence for a benthic, partially-migratory fish, white sucker (Catostomus commersonii), and used carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios to determine the diet contribution associated with areas of contaminated sediments within the urbanized portion of the St. Louis River. We then tested which factors were significantly related to neoplasia prevalence, including age, sex, and the percent diet obtained from contaminated areas within the St. Louis River relative to Lake Superior, the reference area. Overall, the prevalence of contaminant-related internal and external tumors was low, <5%. For skin neoplasia prevalence, both sex and age were significant factors, whereas location-specific diet contribution based on stable isotope analysis was not a significant factor. For liver neoplasia prevalence, only age was a significant factor. Nevertheless, for all contaminants measured (polychlorinated biphenyls [PCBs], polychlorinated dibenzodioxins [PCDDs], and polychlorinated dibenzofurans [PCDFs]), there was a significant, negative correlation between liver tissue concentration and Lake Superior diet contribution, confirming that the St. Louis River is the primary source of contaminant exposure. The research highlights the complexity of exposure to location-specific contaminants and potentially infectious agents associated with neoplasia at urban, contaminated sites in the Great Lakes, and elsewhere. It also demonstrates the need to determine the full set of risk factors across life-stages, habitats, and biological endpoints.

Effectiveness Assessment of a New System of Sediment Trap in the Investigation of Matter Sedimentation in a Reservoir—A Case Study

This paper presents results of the research on the effectiveness of entrapping sediment matter in newly designed sediment traps. Four traps, characterized by different geometrical and construction parameters, were analyzed. The assessment of the operation of the traps was made on the basis of research work conducted in situ in a small retention reservoir located in Blizne, south-east Poland during summer 2017 and 2018. Under environmental conditions present during the research, trap number 2 emerged as the most effective. It was characterized by a height to diameter ratio equal to 6.06, as well as innovative design thanks to the presence of a dual-chamber cylindrical vessel with a sedimentation funnel ending in a deflector. The proposed construction solution ensured optimal, stable operation of the trap. This trap is more effective in entrapping sediment matter than the simple tools described in the literature so far. In addition, it can be used not only in reservoirs, but also in seas and oceans. Such traps can be used to study the sedimentation rate in various water ecosystems, and also the entrapped sediment can be analysed in a qualitative manner to determine its role in the distribution of pollutants deposited in the sediments of aquatic ecosystems.

Impacts of Micro- and Nano-Sized Plastic Particles on Benthic Invertebrates: A Literature Review and Gap Analysis

As documented by the numerous publications that have appeared in recent years, plastic pollution of the environment and the effects on the respective ecosystems are currently one of the most intensely discussed issues in environmental science and in society at large. Of special concern are the effects of micro- and nano-sized plastics. A key issue in understanding the fate and potential effects of micro- and nano-sized plastics is their dynamic nature, as the size, shape, and charge of the particles change over time. Moreover, due to various biological processes, such as the aggregation of organic material and/or bacteria (“biofouling”), the density of plastic particles that settle in the sediments of aquatic ecosystems may be several orders of magnitudes higher than that in the surrounding waters. Consequently, the risk posed by plastic pollution to benthic fauna is considerably high. Nonetheless, the vast majority of studies examining the effects of microplastics have focused on pelagic organisms so far. We therefore conducted a comprehensive literature review to examine the impact of micro- and nano-sized plastics on benthic invertebrates, including the physical and chemical effects of leaching and the interactions of plastic particles with contaminants. Overall, 330 papers were reviewed for their fulfilment of different criteria (e.g. test species, plastic material, particle shape, particle size, exposure concentration, exposure route, assay type, assay duration), with 49 publications finally included in our survey. A comprehensive gap-analysis on the effects of plastic particles on benthic invertebrates, revealed a wide variety of effects triggered by micro- and/or nano-sized plastics but also distinct differences regarding the plastic materials tested, the size fractions applied, the shape of the respective particles and the exposure routes tested. Our review concludes with a discussion of the important research gaps concerning freshwater ecosystems and recommendations for future areas of research.

In situ simulation of thin-layer dredging effects on sediment metal release across the sediment-water interface

Dredging is widely applied to remediate contaminated sediments in aquatic ecosystems. However, the efficiency of thin-layer dredging for metal pollution control remains uncertain and even controversial. This study conducted an in-situ simulation experiment in Lake Taihu to investigate dredging effects on sediment metal release based on metal fractions, diffusion flux and kinetics parameters of metal resupply, using diffusive gradient in thin films (DGT), multi-microelectrode, and European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sequential extraction scheme. Results indicated that the exchange fluxes of metals did not necessarily correspond to total sediment metal concentrations or the contents of different sequentially-extracted metal fractions; there were appreciable decreases in Ni, Cd, Cu and Zn in terms of total sediment metal concentrations and metal fractions, whereas the bioavailability and release fluxes of labile Ni, Cu and Zn (but not Cd) were all notably promoted (by 136, 128 and 149%, respectively) in dredged area compared to those in un-dredged sediments. Further analysis on the kinetics of metal resupply by DGT technique and DGT-induced fluxes in sediments model (DIFS) showed higher concentrations of labile metals, with a larger resupply ability from sediments after dredging. Therefore, thin-layer dredging had the possibility to increase metal release from sediments to the water column. This was attributed to the remobilization of metal sulfides in anoxic deep sediments, as oxidation increased after dredging due to the introduction of oxygenated water, causing subsequent dissolution of sulfide-bound metals. In conclusion, dredging may not mitigate metal contamination, although it can reduce the total pollution load. Our findings indicated dual effects of dredging and provided new insights into the remobilization mechanism of metal release induced by dredging.

The filter feeder Dreissena polymorpha affects nutrient, silicon, and metal(loid) mobilization from freshwater sediments

Organic sediments in aquatic ecosystems are well known sinks for nutrients, silicon, and metal(loid)s. Organic matter-consuming organisms like invertebrate shredders, grazers, and bioturbators significantly affect element fixation or remobilization by changing redox conditions or binding properties of organic sediments. Little is known about the effect of filter feeders, like the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha, an invasive organism in North American and European freshwater ecosystems. A laboratory batch experiment exposing D. polymorpha (∼1200 organisms per m2) to organic sediment from a site contaminated with arsenic, copper, lead, and uranium revealed a significant uptake and accumulation of arsenic, copper, iron, and especially uranium both into the soft body tissues and the seashell. This is in line with previous observations of metal(loid) accumulation from biomonitoring studies. Regarding its environmental impact, D. polymorpha significantly contributed to mobilization of silicon, iron, phosphorus, arsenic, and copper and to immobilization of uranium (p < 0.001), probably driven by redox conditions, microbial activity within the gut system, or active control of element homeostasis. No net mobilization or immobilization was observed for zinc and lead, because of their low mobility at the prevailing pH of 7.5–8.5. The present results suggest that D. polymorpha can both ameliorate (nutrient mobilization, immobilization of toxicants mobile under oxic conditions) or aggravate negative effects (mobilization of toxicants mobile under reducing conditions) in ecosystems. Relating the results of the present study to observed population densities in natural freshwater ecosystems suggests a significant influence of D. polymorpha on element cycling and needs to be considered in future studies.

Fauna Europaea: Gastrotricha

Fauna Europaea provides a public web-service with an index of scientific names (including important synonyms) of all living European land and freshwater animals, their geographical distribution at country level (up to the Urals, excluding the Caucasus region), and some additional information. The Fauna Europaea project covers about 230,000 taxonomic names, including 130,000 accepted species and 14,000 accepted subspecies, which is much more than the originally projected number of 100,000 species. This represents a huge effort by more than 400 contributing specialists throughout Europe and is a unique (standard) reference suitable for many users in science, government, industry, nature conservation and education.Gastrotricha are a meiobenthic phylum composed of 813 species known so far (2 orders, 17 families) of free-living microinvertebrates commonly present and actively moving on and into sediments of aquatic ecosystems, 339 of which live in fresh and brackish waters. The Fauna Europaea database includes 214 species of Chaetonotida (4 families) plus a single species of Macrodasyida incertae sedis. This paper deals with the 224 European freshwater species known so far, 9 of which, all of Chaetonotida, have been described subsequently and will be included in the next database version. Basic information on their biology and ecology are summarized, and a list of selected, main references is given. As a general conclusion the gastrotrich fauna from Europe is the best known compared with that of other continents, but shows some important gaps of knowledge in Eastern and Southern regions.

Studying composition of bacteriobenthic communities in the sediments of water ecosystems by fatty acid markers

The structure and function of bacterial communities in sediments of aquatic ecosystems have been considered using the molecular method of gas chromatography—mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Specific substances of microbial origin have been discovered in the samples and assigned to most probable genera or species. The local bank of microbial markers has been designed for lake silts. The composition of bacteriobenthic community is determined quantitatively using the algebra algorithm of decomposition of the total fatty acids profile into individual taxonomic components.

Ecotoxicity of sediments in rivers: Invertebrate community, toxicity bioassays and the toxic unit approach as complementary assessment tools

The determination of the real toxicity of sediments in aquatic ecosystems is challenging and necessary for an appropriate risk assessment. Different approaches have been developed and applied over the last several decades. Currently, the joint implementation of chemical, ecological and toxicological tools is recommended for an appropriate and successful toxicity risk assessment. We chose the combination of the toxic unit approach with acute pore water tests (Vibrio fischeri, Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and Daphnia magna) and whole-sediment exposure tests (V. fischeri, Chironomus riparius), together with invertebrate community composition (multivariate analyses) to detect short and long-term responses of the organisms in four rivers of the Iberian Peninsula. High toxicity was detected in three sites (the downstream sites of the Llobregat and the Júcar, and the most upstream site of the Ebro). We identified organophosphate insecticides and metals as the main variables responsible for this toxicity, particularly in the whole-sediment tests. In particular, chlorpyrifos was mostly responsible for the toxicity (TUs) of D. magna, coinciding with the C. riparius mortality (long-term toxicity) in the mentioned sites, and copper was the main pollutant responsible for the short-term toxicity of P. subcapitata. The combination of the different approaches allowed us to detect ecotoxicological effects in organisms and identify the main contributors to the toxicity in these multi-stressed rivers.

Does richness of Oligochaeta (Annelida) follows a linear distribution with habitat structural heterogeneity in aquatic sediments?

Sediment of aquatic environments supports several local communities, among them aquatic invertebrates. Habitat structural heterogeneity in sediments of aquatic ecosystems is related to a number of factors, including variability in the particle size of the substrate and availability of different food resources, the two structures that comprise the aquatic sediment. These structures are necessary for the stability of zoobenthic community, including the Oligochaeta assemblage, favoring richness as habitat heterogeneity increases. To analyze the habitat structural heterogeneity, we use these following structures: granulometric composition and organic matter composition, and we tested these structures together (habitat heterogeneity) and separately (granulometric and organic matter heterogeneity). This study investigated the relationship between habitat structural heterogeneity and richness of the Oligochaeta assemblage. We hypothesized that there is a positive linear relationship between habitat structural heterogeneity and richness of Oligochaeta, and predicted that the granulometric composition is more important than organic matter composition for increasing richness. There was no linear relationship between Oligochaeta richness and habitat heterogeneity; but the analysis showed an asymmetric triangular dispersion pattern, being granulometric heterogeneity more important than organic matter heterogeneity for richness of Oligochaeta. These results indicated that habitat structural heterogeneity was beneficial for richness of Oligochaeta until certain threshold and after this, the relationship between structural heterogeneity of habitats and richness of Oligochaeta is negative with decrease of diversity due to the filling of interstitial spaces which gradually reduces the ability to colonize these habitats.

Measurement of dynamic mobilization of trace metals in sediments using DGT and comparison with bioaccumulation in Chironomus riparius: First results of an experimental study

Sediments in aquatic ecosystems are often contaminated as a result of anthropogenic activities. Sediments and benthic organisms have been used to monitor trace metals contamination. However, due to the high variability of contaminant bioavailability, the attempt to link metal concentration in sediments and contamination of the organisms or ecotoxicological effect often lead to disappointing results. The technique of diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) has been proposed as a relevant tool to study metal bioavailability, for example for accumulation in plants. In the present study, laboratory microcosm experiments were conducted with six contaminated sediments to compare metal accumulation in DGT and bioaccumulation in a chironomid ( Chironomus riparius) for Cu, Cd and Pb . Metal accumulation in DGT was measured over time then modelled to determine two parameters of the dynamic response of the metals to DGT deployment: the size of the particulate labile pool and the kinetic of the solid-dissolved phase exchange. The mobility of metals was found metal and sediment dependent. A significant relationship between metal accumulated in DGT and bioaccumulated in chironomids was found for Cu and Pb. However, total metals in sediments were the best predictors of bioaccumulation. Nevertheless, the knowledge of the metals dynamic enhanced our ability to explain the different biological uptake observed in sediments of similar total metal concentrations.

Accumulation of the precious metals platinum, palladium and rhodium from automobile catalytic converters in Paratenuisentis ambiguus as compared with its fish host, Anguilla anguilla

The platinum group metals (PGM) Pt, Pd and Rh are emitted into the environment mainly by catalytic exhaust gas converters of cars. As PGM accumulate in sediments of aquatic ecosystems, the study was focused on the uptake of the noble metals by European eels, Anguilla anguilla infected with the acanthocephalan Paratenuisentis ambiguus. Eels were exposed to ground catalytic converter material for six weeks. After exposure Pt and Pd were detected in the liver and kidney of the eels and in the parasites. Palladium was also found in fish muscle and intestine. No Rh uptake by the eel tissues and the parasites occurred. Paratenuisentis ambiguus contained the highest levels of both metals with 40 times higher Pt concentrations and four times higher Pd concentrations than the liver of its host. Due to its accumulation capacity for PGM, P. ambiguus can be applied as a sensitive accumulation indicator in field studies to assess the degree of environmental PGM contamination in aquatic ecosystems.

Accumulation and distribution of platinum and rhodium in the European eel Anguilla anguilla following aqueous exposure to metal salts

The platinum group metals (PGM) Pt and Rh are emitted into the environment mainly by catalytic exhaust gas converters of cars and by effluents of hospitals, which use Pt based anti-cancer drugs. However, there is still a lack of information on the availability of these precious metals to the biosphere. As PGM accumulate in sediments of aquatic ecosystems we focused our study on the uptake of the noble metals by European eels, Anguilla anguilla. Therefore, eels were exposed in tap water and humic water containing Pt 4+ and Rh 3+ at a concentration of 170 and 260 μg/l, respectively. After an exposure period of 6 weeks the mean Pt levels in bile, liver, kidney and intestine of the exposed eels ranged between 68 ng/g and 840 ng/g and the mean Rh levels between 35 ng/g and 155 ng/g whereas the PGM levels of the unexposed controls were below the detection limit of 50 ng/g for Pt and 5 ng/g for Rh. Rh was also taken up by gill and spleen. No PGM uptake was found for muscle and blood. The pattern of metal distribution within the eel differed between Pt and Rh and was dependent on the water type. Due to their accumulation capacity for PGM eels are suitable as accumulation indicators to detect PGM pollution in aquatic ecosystems.

Using landsat multispectral scanner data to estimate suspended sediments in Moon Lake, Mississippi

Suspended sediments are a major factor affecting water quality in many aquatic ecosystems. Research was undertaken to determine the application of digital spectral data collected by the multispectral scanner (MSS) on the Landsat satellite for estimating suspended sediments in aquatic ecosystems where mean annual concentrations of suspended sediments are greater than 50 mg L −1. Digital spectral data from 14 Landsat MSS scenes of Moon Lake in Coahoma County, Mississippi were analyzed and compared with ground measurements of total solids and suspended sediments in the lake surface water for the period between January 1983 and May 1985. Coefficients of determination ( R 2) greater than 0.81 were calculated between MSS Band 2 (0.6–0.7 μm) or Band 3 (0.7–0.8 μm) and suspended sediments or total solids. Coefficients of determination for multiple regression using three or four MSS bands were greater than 0.90. This study showed that digital spectral data from the Landsat satellites can be used to locate and monitor surface-suspended sediments in aquatic ecosystems. With such a digital computer technique, entire regions can be surveyed quickly to locate aquatic ecosystems with suspended sediment problems. Conservation efforts can then be concentrated on those aquatic ecosystems with the most serious suspended sediment problems and soil conservation strategies developed in their watersheds to control erosion and sediment yield and thus to improve water quality.
