PASS: A Privacy-Aware Approach for Secure Smart Metering in Advanced Metering Infrastructure Networks

Huge amounts of sensitive data are generated and transmitted on a smart grid infrastructure. These data are used for acquisition of various parameters of interest from smart meters in the grid and control of the grid. However, wireless communication processes across the smart grid network are vulnerable to different attacks like any other wireless communication infrastructure, which has unavoidably given rise to concerns about how to efficiently secure services and preserve privacy in smart grid network especially in metering. In this article, an efficient approach and framework was introduced for secure metering and preservation of consumers’ privacy in different neighborhood area networks of different service providers of the smart grid communication network. Our approach effectively introduced a communication framework for efficient and secure metering, privacy preservation, load balancing, and billing using perturbation and data aggregation techniques. Computational and security analysis were performed to ascertain its efficiency in terms of computational cost, energy consumption, and security. The results showed that the approach not only prevented gleaning of the metering but did so at a relatively low computational overhead compared with other approaches.

Secure Metering Data Aggregation With Batch Verification in Industrial Smart Grid

Smart grid can greatly improve the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of the traditional grids. In industrial smart grid, real-time user-side metering data may be frequently collected for monitoring and controlling electricity consumption. However, the procedure of frequently metering data collection may lead to sensitive information leakage. To address the security issues in industrial smart grid, in this article, we construct an efficient identity-based metering data aggregation scheme supporting batch verification by collector and electricity service provider, respectively, which guarantees the privacy and integrity of metering data. In our scheme, collectors are allowed to collect and aggregate the metering data of users in their respective administrative domain without compromising the confidentiality of metering data. Security analysis demonstrates that our proposed scheme is provably secure in the random oracle and satisfies the above security requirements. Performance analysis indicates that our scheme outperforms existing solutions in terms of communication and computation costs.

Distributed meter data aggregation framework based on Blockchain and homomorphic encryption

A significant progress in modern power grids is witnessed by the tendency of becoming complex cyber-physical systems. As a fundamental physical infrastructure, smart meter in the demand side provides real-time energy consumption information to the utility. However, ensuring information security and privacy in the meter data aggregation process is a non-trivial task. This study proposes a distributed, privacy-preserving, and secure meter data aggregation framework, backed up by Blockchain and homomorphic encryption (HE) technologies. Meter data are aggregated and verified by a hierarchical Blockchain system, in which the consensus mechanism is supported by the practical Byzantine fault tolerance algorithm. On the top of the Blockchain system, HE technology is used to protect the privacy of individual meter data items during the aggregation process. Performance analysis is conducted to validate the proposed method.

Using Covert Topological Information for Defense Against Malicious Attacks on DC State Estimation

Accurate state estimation is of paramount importance to maintain the power system operating in a secure and efficient state. The recently identified coordinated data injection attacks to meter measurements can bypass the current security system and introduce errors to the state estimates. The conventional wisdom to mitigate such attacks is by securing meter measurements to evade malicious injections. In this paper, we provide a novel alternative to defend against false data injection attacks using covert power network topological information. By keeping the exact reactance of a set of transmission lines from attackers, no false data injection attack can be launched to compromise any set of state variables. We first investigate from the attackers' perspective the necessary condition to perform an injection attack. Based on the arguments, we characterize the optimal protection problem, which protects the state variables with minimum cost, as a well-studied Steiner tree problem in a graph. In addition, we also propose a mixed defending strategy that jointly considers the use of covert topological information and secure meter measurements when either method alone is costly or unable to achieve the protection objective. A mixed-integer linear programming formulation is introduced to obtain the optimal mixed defending strategy. To tackle the NP-hardness of the problem, a tree-pruning-based heuristic is further presented to produce an approximate solution in polynomial time. The advantageous performance of the proposed defending mechanisms is verified in IEEE standard power system test cases.

Metering scheme for client privacy protection

Abstract Metering scheme is composed of servers, clients, and an audit agency who collects the information for the clients which have been processed by servers. Although many efficient and secure metering schemes have been proposed in the literature, they do not consider the client privacy issue. To mitigate this limitation of the related work, we propose a metering scheme to protect the privacy of clients in internet. More specifically, we apply RSA based blind signature to the interaction between client and audit agency. If a client spends metering information to the server more than twice, the identity of the client is revealed by the server or audit agency.
