Contribution of the Telecommunications Industry to Sustainable Development Goals within the Framework of SASB General Issue Categories: The Case of a Telecommunications Company

Sustainable development is an important issue that shapes the future of our planet by addressing economic, social and environmental factors. The United Nations (UN) has set 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ensure sustainable development, the success of which depends on global cooperation and joint efforts. The SDGs set out the environmental, social and economic sustainability issues to be achieved by 2030. Private sector efforts have an important role in achieving these goals. As a result of social responsibility and stakeholder demands, companies share their sustainability activities and the SDGs to which these activities contribute through reports. Telecommunications companies also have the potential to play a key role in achieving many SDGs through the innovative, accessible and inclusive digital infrastructure systems they provide. This study’s goal is to reveal the impact of the telecommunications industry on the SDGs through the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board's (SASB) General Issue Categories (GIC). In this context, a methodological framework developed by SASB to identify important sustainability issues across sectors and industries matched SDGs with 26 general sustainability issues. In this framework, SDG impact indices were calculated for the technology and communication sector, which includes the telecommunications industry, and for a telecommunications company operating in Turkey, and SDG impact at the sector, industry and company level was tried to be revealed. According to the calculations, it was concluded that the goal known as SDG 9, which was established to establish strong infrastructures, support sustainable industrialization and strengthen and expand innovation, has an impact score of 37.50% for the telecommunication services industry, 31.25% for the technology&communication sector and 31.25% for the sample telecommunication company. SDG 9 has the highest impact score in telecommunications compared to other SDGs.

Students’ Personal Experience vis-à-vis Personal Interest Towards Philippine Traditional Dances with Respect to Dance Steps, Music, Costume, and Dance History for Preservation Endeavors: Does it Matter?

The primary aim of this research is to investigate the immediate influence of students’ personal experiences and their degree of interest in traditional dances of the Philippines in relation to preservation efforts. Respondents for the study are students from a higher education institution in the Philippines. After obtaining data and performing multiple regression analysis, it was observed that overall personal experience has a direct influence to level of interest. Moreover, students’ personal experience has a direct influence to their interest towards dance steps and costumes, except music and dance history. Therefore, offering a wide range of varied and substantial activities students is imperative, commencing from early education through to their tertiary education years, to enhance enthusiasm and involvement in the safeguarding of these intangible cultural heritages. Limitations and recommendations for physical education teachers in the higher education sector, institutional projects and collaborative efforts, and future research directions are also presented.

The Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) in context: UK public sector approach to fusion energy.

The UK's fusion energy approach has developed over the past 5 years to include government policy initiatives and a range of public sector investments designed to be delivered in partnership with the private sector. These have aimed to create an environment that stimulates innovation and investment to deliver economic as well as scientific and environmental benefits throughout the lifetime of the public sector fusion energy programme. The Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production acts as a focus and anchor for both public and private sector efforts to develop fusion energy, developing the supply chain and potential for Intellectual Property development and export opportunities well ahead of the anticipated STEP completion date of 2040. This is maximized by the UK's approach to a holistic research and innovation programme backed up by a regulatory and skills programme. This article is part of the theme issue 'Delivering Fusion Energy - The Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP)'.

Tourism and climate change stocktake: a call to action

The first climate action stocktake cycle under the Paris Agreement was completed in 2023 to assess global progress on mitigation, adaptation, and climate finance goals. State-driven action needs to be complemented by sectoral efforts, and this paper builds on the first Tourism Stocktake undertaken in 2023 that examined climate action in the tourism sector. First, an expert elicitation survey was conducted to validate and deepen the findings from the stocktaking activity. Second, an analysis of the Stocktake’s 40 metrics was undertaken against six criteria of indicator quality. The expert survey revealed a sector still in the early stages of implementing its climate response, with a consensus that 2030 tourism emission reduction targets would not be achieved. Tourism policy and investment were deemed inconsistent with climate ambitions, and current adaptation is insufficient for projected climate change, so that future impacts will restrict tourism development in some destinations. Analysis of the metrics exposed significant data gaps and a core set of 13 robust metrics to measure change over the next stocktaking cycle is identified. The paper concludes with recommendations to advance sector capabilities and collaboration to monitor progress on climate action for an updated Tourism Stocktake in 2026.

Indigenous agricultural practices employed by the Vhavenda community in the Musina local municipality to promote sustainable environmental management

Indigenous knowledge offers insights into preserving natural resources and further contributes towards improving rural livelihoods. Incorporating this knowledge into agriculture can therefore increase acceptance and innovation of sustainable technologies. In support of this argument, rural small-scale farmers have globally proven the significance of indigenous knowledge in the agricultural sector by incorporating their local strategies and practices for both commercial and subsistence agriculture. This article demonstrates the various indigenous farming practices employed by the Vhavenda Community and how these practices promote sustainable environmental management. It reflects the essential aspects crucial to indicating the value of indigenous agriculture. Using a mixed-methods approach, we administered face-to-face structured questionnaires to elderly villagers aged 50 years and above from the study area. Our results revealed various agricultural practices such as crop rotations, polyculture, intercropping, livestock farming, ploughing rituals, water harvesting, and seasonal agriculture. The Vhavenda community incorporates local knowledge, which is unique to these agricultural practices, and uses various strategies which contribute to a sustainable environment within their area. This has, in turn, allowed them to improve their livelihoods, reduce poverty, and provide life sustenance. The study's findings demonstrate the significance of indigenous knowledge in the agricultural sector and rural peoples' efforts towards supportable environmental management. The article therefore suggests that local indigenous knowledge should be understood as a collaborative concept within the agricultural industry. Furthermore, it proposes that stakeholders who influence decision-making and progress in rural communities should consider this knowledge and work together with local inhabitants. Additionally, it advocates for acknowledging the understanding of local indigenous peoples in pursuing sustainable environmental management.

Drug discovery and development and precision medicine for Autism Spectrum Disorder – current state

Introduction: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder/condition. Medical interven-tions for this condition are mainly pharmacological, and generally not tailored to precisely address the specific underlying issues in each ASD individual. Despite the extensive efforts to develop new or repurpose existing drugs over the decades, the range of medications that address this condition remains very limited.Findings: Progress in drug development has been hindered by research design limitations and the complex, het-erogeneous nature of the ASD itself. Therefore, this article first discusses preclinical and clinical studies aimed at finding effective treatments, highlighting their shortcomings and potential solutions. It then delves into the com-plexity of ASD and the implications for drug development, such as its phenotypic and genetic heterogeneity and multifactorial etiology, and unclear diagnostic boundaries with other developmental disorders.Exploiting the advantages of new technologies, current autism treatment research is steering towards prioritizing genetic and molecular data over phenotypic data, emphasizing the need for biologically meaningful and quantifi-able biomarkers to identify biologically defined and clinically actionable subgroups within ASD, amenable to specific treatments.The critical role of precision medicine is underscored as a comprehensive, fundamental approach to biology-based drug development and personalized treatments. Achieving this goal requires an integrated analysis of multilayered data, utilizing multi-omics, systems biology, and machine learning approaches.Conclusion: Lastly, the article provides a brief overview of current initiatives and private sector efforts focusing on precision medicine treatments for neurodevelopmental disorders, highlighting their progress in developing drugs through this innovative approach.

Analysis of Strategies of Geo-tourism Development in Boyolali, Indonesia

Abstract Tourism emerges as a promising avenue for foreign exchange earnings, distinct from the oil and gas sector, playing a pivotal role in economic development. Boyolali Regency boasts an abundance of natural, cultural, and historical treasures, serving as the fundamental basis for crafting sustainable policies in tourism development. This study adopts a descriptive approach, employing data collection methods such as observation, interviews, and documentation. The analytical tool utilized is SWOT analysis. The research findings reveal that: (1) Boyolali possesses significant tourism potential primarily in its natural assets, (2) Strategies to elevate tourism potential in Boyolali encompass the enhancement of facilities and infrastructure at tourist sites, increased community participation, and improved marketing approaches, (3) Obstacles in the tourism development of Boyolali encompass a lack of collaboration with the private sector, insufficient infrastructure, suboptimal security, and inadequate promotional efforts.

Challenges of Ensuring Reverse Logistics in a Military Organization Using Outsourced Services

A circular economy is defined as a socially responsible, policy-driven model of business or enterprise operations that contributes to more sustainable society for both current and future generations. Although the implementation of circularity principles in the economy is a long process, the impact it creates on sustainability is long-term, and its benefits will be felt by all future generations. Therefore, the development of circularity in the European Union’s economy must progress, and more and more organizations should implement it as a good practice. The object of the article is the cooperation of civil sector outsourced services and the country’s military forces in the field of reverse logistics. Using a qualitative research methodology, the article demonstrates the potential for the country’s military forces to support the European Union’s circular economy initiative in the context of sustainability. This includes reducing the consumption of natural resources by increasing the value of the closed-loop supply chain and keeping products suitable for consumption as long as possible. Considering the fact that there is limited information dissemination within the military sector, this research presents one of the few opportunities to examine the integration of civilian and military sector efforts for sustainable development from a practical and scientific perspective. The conducted research demonstrates that the closed-loop supply chain and the military’s reverse logistics processes take place but are not fully integrated into one whole. They lack a unified whole directed towards a common goal when reverse logistics activities are correlated to closed-loop supply chain and national circular economy goals, as well as ensuring sustainability. Outsourced services are available and used in the military, in many cases even for reverse logistics activities (repair, storage, transportation, modernization, etc.). This research made it possible to prepare a conceptual model for the organization of the military’s reverse logistics using outsourced services, thereby ensuring the creation of a sustainable supply chain.

Fostering effective governance through intragovernmental networks: a case of a justice, crime prevention and security cluster network

South Africa’s crime challenge remains despite substantial public sector efforts. As wicked problems, including crime, often transcend the conventional capacities of public authorities to address them effectively, the primary aim of this research was to uncover the underlying dimensions that contribute to the effective functioning of an intragovernmental collaboration network. This research adopted a case study approach to delve into the structure and efficacy of the South African Justice, Crime Prevention, and Security Cluster. The chosen methodology and insider access to senior management produced rich descriptions not previously available to offer a conceptual understanding of balances and trade-offs required during a mandated and directed collaboration. Findings offer enhanced understanding, contributing to overcoming traditional barriers in public administration networks and reforming traditional hierarchical structures to offer meaningful governance alternatives or improvements to existing structures. Specifically, this study reveals gaps in the intragovernmental network and offers insights for governance and performance enhancements. Findings emphasize the importance of fostering a collaborative culture based on performance and accountability. The study underscores the need for more robust network directives, clarifying roles and responsibilities, and enhancing leadership attributes. It stresses the importance of efficient coordination, collaborative capability, and shared purpose. The study also suggests cluster-oriented budgeting and greater involvement of key stakeholders, including civil societies, research institutions, and academic establishments. These findings contribute to improving government-led networks in addressing complex challenges.

Exploring the role of Mathematics teachers in Secondary-level education in Nepal: A case study analysis on Geometric study within Bagamati province in Nepal

Geometry is one of the major topics of Mathematic education requires hard work and practice to get the desired result in the Nepalese context. This study aims to find out the role of teachers in Geometry teaching at the secondary level within the Government schools of Ramechhap, Sindhupalchok and Chitwan districts respectively. A cross-sectional study was designed to find out the findings of the study. The study was conducted in March 2023 applying various research tools of Questionnaires, FGD, and KII questionnaires. The result shows a trend of education within the Government system is following the national curriculum, and teachers are well aware of the education system trained, educated and holding positions after completing competitive ways that also prove the competent ability of teachers. The teachers are playing a vital role in rural-urban schools in the study area, paying hard times and ongoing providing efforts. However, various social and economic issues are associated with Geometry education, lack of funding and human resources and priorities to mathematics are minimal. Teachers’ skills and efforts are remarkable, additional classes and time-to-time tests are ongoing. The study further concluded mathematics education is no-doubt a challenge in government schools and limited access on human resources among schools with lack of financial support and material-access found limited and insufficient in the present context. Investment on teaching practices with instrumental support and multi sectoral efforts is advised.

Faith-based pharmaceutical supply chains and their role in African pharmaceutical systems: a qualitative systematic review

For the health system to function well, the population must have equitable access to quality, affordable pharmaceutical supplies; however, pharmaceutical systems in Africa are challenged by inadequate funding, drug stock outs and irregular supplies, a shortage of trained pharmacy personnel, and a lack of systems for drug regulation and quality. Faith-based health providers, as private, not-for-profit actors, have long complemented public sector efforts in the supply of pharmaceuticals in Africa. However, the contribution of faith-based health providers in pharmaceutical systems has not been formally studied. This study examines the nature and function of faith-based healthcare providers in improving access to pharmaceutical supplies in Africa. To do so, we conducted an exploratory qualitative systematic review to identify documents that contain information on faith-based involvement in pharmaceutical supply in Africa. The review identified 20 articles for inclusion. These articles were analyzed using thematic, narrative analysis. The analysis revealed a significant evidence gap relating to the contribution of private-not-for-profit, faith-based providers to African pharmaceutical systems. The review suggests that while faith-based drug supply organizations have existed for a long time and contribute significantly to national pharmaceutical systems, there is very little known about the nature of faith-based pharmaceutical providers and how they complement public sector pharmaceutical systems. In many contexts, faith-based involvement in pharmaceutical systems improved access for the general population and increased the supply of pharmaceuticals in national systems. Faith-based drug supply organizations also often provide pharmaceutical supplies to both rural and urban areas, often targeting rural and remote areas particularly. The review also indicates that faith-based drug supply organizations improved access to medicines and related commodities and, despite a lack of regulation in many contexts, have the potential to make a positive contribution to quality assurance of pharmaceuticals. In summary, the analysis confirmed that faith-based involvement in pharmaceutical supply chains contributes to strengthening the national health system by complementing the public pharmaceutical system through improved access to medicines and related commodities in Africa. These conclusions corroborate the need to continually document and acknowledge faith-based healthcare providers’ efforts which could guide the formulation of stringent, evidence-based strategies.

BANKING SECTOR EFFORTS TO CONTAINMENT/ DAMAGE LIMITATION OF COVID-19 CRISIS AS A PREDICTIVE FACTOR IN THE ABILITY TO RECOVERY OF SMES IN JORDANIAN

Objective: The research aims to identify the efforts made by the banking sector to contain the damages caused by the COVID-19 in all its aspects (situation assessment and analysis, and crisis intervention) from the banking sector employees’ perspective. The research also aims to identify the role of the banking sector's efforts in containing the COVID-19 crisis damages on predicting the ability of Jordanian SMEs to recover their activity.
 
 Methodology: The research population consisted of two sub-populations; the first consists a cluster sample was taken from Jordanian banks branch managers, all employees in the risk departments, and employees responsible for credit operations in (Bank of Jordan and the Islamic International Arab Bank), The second subpopulation consists of all SMEs’ owners, 24,000 enterprises in the Northern, Central, and Southern regions of Jordan.
 
 Findings: The study found that there is a positive and statistically significant impact of the banking sector's efforts to contain COVID-19 crisis damage in its dimensions (efforts to assess and analyze the situation and efforts to intervene in the crisis) on the ability of SMEs to recover their activity. The results showed that SMEs suffer from an unprecedented shock and depression in the absence of financial assistance and facilities from the banking sector.
 
 Conclusion: The responses showed (73.33%) of project owners indicated that banks and lenders did not provide any credit facilities.

Pathways versus incentives: climate activism to climate aligned portfolio management

Abstract Climate activists have pressured financial institutions to accelerate global decarbonization by aligning portfolios with Paris Agreement transition pathways and targets. We trace the progression from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and International Energy Agency (IEA) scenarios to corporate target setting via the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) and financial institutions’ portfolio alignment methods. We identify three critical weaknesses that will limit efficacy: the absence of rigorous GHG emissions accounting, reliance on centrally planned pathways, and tension with fiduciary duties. These issues undermine the theory of change behind activist and financial sector efforts. As an alternative, we propose Emissions Liability Management (ELM) which treats emissions as liabilities matched by removal assets, directing firms to maintain emissions solvency. Rather than chasing pathways, ELM provides incentives for emissions reductions and removals consistent with shareholder obligations derived from market prices. By reframing climate action in financial terms, ELM can engage financial markets as agents of change in a manner grounded in sound economics.

EXPLORING SECTORAL REACH IN AGE-FRIENDLY COMMUNITIES

Abstract There is increasing interest in better understanding the sectoral reach of age-friendly community practice. Action across a wide variety of actors is central to achieving age-friendly societal change according to the World Health Organization and an explicit goal for governmental participation in its Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities. However, there is limited knowledge regarding the scope of sectoral reach by age-friendly communities. We used qualitative inquiry to assess sectoral efforts reported by American age-friendly communities that completed a five-year cycle of participation (n=40). We employed directed content analysis using a priori indicators by sectoral actors: public (i.e., government), private (i.e., business), and civil society including nonprofit organizations and volunteers. We classify sectoral actions by type (i.e., intersectoral, multisectoral) and by clustered domain community foci (i.e., built, social, service). Our study identifies the extent and types of sectoral actors and actions reported by age-friendly communities with the greatest efforts reported in the public sector, and while similarly distributed across all the domains, slightly more efforts were noted in the built environment. We also found greater intersectoral efforts (i.e., explicitly working towards shared goals) than multisectoral (i.e., not necessarily in collaboration on shared goals), particularly across government. While our study substantiates the breadth of actions towards age-friendly change, additional research is needed to examine the ways in which the public and other sectoral actions are further linked to outcomes in communities in the United States and in other countries.

RESEARCH TO STRENGTHEN, INNOVATE, AND TRANSFORM AGE-FRIENDLY COMMUNITY PRACTICE

Abstract There is much research being conducted to better understand and advance age-friendly community practice. This symposium presents research from leading age-friendly researchers and practitioners across the United States. Drs. Black and Oh provide an analysis of the nation’s sectoral efforts based on progress reported by the age-friendly communities. Drs. Hernandez and Coyle will describe the research and community engagement that led to the development of an aging equity conceptual framework and examples of how it is being operationalized in the City of Boston. Drs. Greenfield and doctoral student Pope will present on a scoping review of studies in the U.S. and Canada on the range of ways in which the public sector participates in age-friendly community efforts. Drs. Coyle and Oh and doctoral students Gleason and Somerville present on a study that explored factors inhibiting communities from officially joining the age-friendly network. Dr. Perry reports on efforts to elevate the voice of older adults on social justice issues pertaining to aging in place in the domain of housing. Individual abstracts provide further detail on each study’s methods and findings.

Abstract 
 According to Law Number 36 of 2009 concerning health, articles 4 and 5 state that everyone has the same opportunity to obtain access to health. The form of community empowerment in the health sector or Community Resource Health Efforts (UKBM) is a government breakthrough through Active Alert Village and Subdistrict Development since 2006 so that people can access basic health services easily and can develop UKBM and carry out community-based surveillance. Poskestren is one of the UKBMs that focuses on empowering Islamic boarding schools. The aim is for the Islamic boarding school community to understand the problems they face, plan and make efforts to solve them by utilizing local potential as stated in the Regulation of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Number 1 of 2013 concerning Guidelines for the Implementation and Development of Islamic Boarding School Health Posts. Postkestren activities prioritize promotive and preventive services, without ignoring curative and rehabilitative aspects, with a spirit of mutual cooperation and assistance from local health centers assisted by postkestren cadres. The result of this service activity is a change in the level of knowledge and understanding of participants about postkestren after being given education. Based on the paired t-test, it is known that the t-value = -14.198, df = 29 and p-value = 0.000, it can be concluded that there is a statistical difference between the average pre-test score (before education) and the post average score -test (after education).

Kedung Gede Tourism Village Recovery Plan (Post Pandemi Covid-19)

This research is motivated by the covid-19 pandemic which has a major impact on the tourism sector and recovery efforts are needed to increase the number of tourist visits after the covid-19 pandemic. This research aims to analyze the tourism potential and development of kedung gede tourist village as covid-19 in the post-pandemic and the benefits felt by the surrounding community from the development of kedung gede tourist village itself. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach to get a complete picture of Kedung Gede Tourism Village with the analysis method used is SWOC analysis. Primary and secondary data obtained came from observations, interviews, documentation and literature studies, such as journals, books, reports. The results of research conducted using SWOC provide several strategies such as: 1) Reviving local traditions periodically to create an attractive tourism attraction. 2) Increase the number of homestays and improve their quality standards in order to become an attractive and quality tourist attraction. 3) Building a unique tourism identity by developing a distinctive icon of Kedung Gede Tourism Village that is different from other tourism villages, 4) Building a network of cooperation with government and private agencies to get support in procuring and improving tourism support facilities and improving road accessibility to the tourism village.

Co-creating a Transdisciplinary Map of Technology-mediated Harms, Risks and Vulnerabilities: Challenges, Ambivalences and Opportunities

The phrase "online harms'' has emerged in recent years out of a growing political willingness to address the ethical and social issues associated with the use of the Internet and digital technology at large. The broad landscape that surrounds online harms gathers a multitude of disciplinary, sectoral and organizational efforts while raising myriad challenges and opportunities for the crossing entrenched boundaries. In this paper we draw lessons from a journey of co-creating a transdisciplinary knowledge infrastructure within a large research initiative animated by the online harms agenda. We begin with a reflection of the implications of mapping, taxonomizing and constructing knowledge infrastructures and a brief review of how online harm and adjacent themes have been theorized and classified in the literature to date. Grounded on our own experience of co-creating a map of online harms, we then argue that the map---and the process of mapping---perform three mutually constitutive functions, acting simultaneously as method, medium and provocation. We draw lessons from how an open-ended approach to mapping, despite not guaranteeing consensus, can foster productive debate and collaboration in ethically and politically fraught areas of research. We end with a call for CSCW research to surface and engage with the multiple temporalities, social lives and political sensibilities of knowledge infrastructures.

Effects of Restoration and Conservation of Riparian Vegetation on Sediment Retention in the Catchment Area of Corumbá IV Hydroelectric Power Plant, Brazil

Vegetation cover and land use are important factors related to the capacity of ecosystems to provide soil loss regulation and sediment retention services, which are highly relevant for sediment management in watersheds draining into reservoirs with multiple water uses. One way to ensure the protection and recovery of vegetation by landowners in Brazil is the implementation of the federal Native Vegetation Protection Law (NVPL), which designates environmentally sensitive areas as Areas of Permanent Preservation (APPs), aiming to conserve water resources and prevent soil erosion. The benefits of riparian vegetation in the catchment of Corumbá IV Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP), located in the Brazilian Cerrado, were analyzed considering landscape reconfigurations from a baseline condition (year 2011) in order to account for the recovery of riparian vegetation by the agricultural sector, as foreseen in the NVPL. The Sediment Delivery Ratio (SDR) model from the InVEST (Integrated Valuation of Environmental Services and Tradeoffs) package was used to map and quantify variations in sediment export and sediment retention throughout the catchment. The reduction in annual sediment export in the drainage basin of the Corumbá IV reservoir reached −27% in the scenario where the total deficit of riparian APPs occupied by pasture or agriculture in the baseline map (41.000 ha) are recovered. While 14% of riparian APP are occupied by crops versus 86% occupied by pasture in the drainage basin of the Corumbá IV HPP, the recovery of riparian zones occupied by agricultural activities resulted in the greatest benefits in sediment retention for the reservoir. The methodology employed in this study can support the prioritization of sectoral efforts for the restoration and conservation of native vegetation, considering the highest returns in benefits perceived by water users affected by sediment input in reservoirs. The study’s results reinforce the importance of conserving vegetation in riparian areas and their surroundings for sediment retention, highlighting the role of these areas as assets in providing water-related ecosystem services. For future developments, it is suggested to assess the interconnections among the energy, water, and food sectors to better understand the barriers and challenges to the maintenance and improvement of water-related ecosystem services in the catchment area of Corumbá IV HPP.
