The value of the Federal Power Commission's consultant safety inspection program for dams was demonstrated by the findings, recommendations, and remedial measures taken as the result of the inspection of one project with nine dams on the Missouri and Madison Rivers in Montana. Responding to the recommendations, the owner of the project, the Montana Power Company, initiated major modifications or repairs to six dams and minor repairs to others. The modifications included the installation of post tensioned cables, some the largest yet installed, the reconstruction of dam sections by the installation of downstream mass concrete structures, grouting, reconstruction of spillway piers, and the raising of one rock filled embankment. Drawings, tables, and photographs help illustrate the nature and details of the work accomplished in improving the stability and safety of these structures.
