Two new species of Pelargonium (Geraniaceae) from the Western Cape

Pelargonium curviandrum E.M. Marais and P. triandrum E.M. Marais are described as new species. Both are tuberous species, belonging to the section Hoarea (Sweet) DC. They correspond in respect to their leaf structure, the colour and shape of the petals and the markings on the posterior petals. Both species have long protruding stamens which are curved upwards during anthesis. A description of the pollen morphology and the leaf anatomy, a distribution map, as well as an illustration of each species, are provided together with a discussion of their relationships within section Hoarea.

A taxonomic revision of the Pelargonium pinnatum species complex (Geraniaceae)

The Pelargonium pinnatum species complex of section Hoarea (Sweet) DC. consists of geophytes with similar pinnate leaves. Macromorphological, anatomical and palynological studies were done to delimit the species and determine their relationship. Three species, P. pinnatum (L.) L’Herit., P. viciifolium DC. and P. trifoliolatum (Eckl. & Zeyh.) E.M. Marais comb. nov., are recognized. Although the species have similar pinnate leaves, their floral structures differ to such an extent that they cannot be regarded as closely related species within section Hoarea.

Pelargonium nephrophyllum (Geraniaceae), a new species from the south-western Cape

Pelargonium nephrophyllum E.M. Marais is described as a new species. It is a tuberous species, belonging to the section Hoarea (Sweet) DC. The kidney-shaped laminae with scalloped margins is a unique leaf shape for section Hoarea. A description of the pollen morphology and the leaf anatomy, as well as an illustration of the species and a distribution map, are provided.

Four new species of Pelargonium (Geraniaceae) from the western Cape Province

Pelargonium aciculatum E.M. Marais, P. confertum E.M. Marais, P. fasciculaceum E.M. Marais and P. connivens E.M. Marais are described as new species. All four are tuberous species, belonging to the section Hoarea (Sweet) DC. They correspond on account of their leaf structure and the structure of the androecium. The pollen morphology and the leaf anatomy support this close relationship of the four species. An illustration of each species and a distribution map are provided.

Delimitation and typification of the section Hoarea of Pelargonium (Geraniaceae)

Section Seymouria (Sweet) Loudon is included in section Hoarea (Sweet) DC. of Pelargonium L’Hérit. on account of the distinct resemblance in habit and floral structure. H. corydaliflora Sweet is designated as lectotype species of section Hoarea. Seksie Seymouria (Sweet) Loudon word ingesluit in seksie Hoarea (Sweet) DC. van Pelargonium L’Hérit. op grond van die ooreenkomste in groeivorm en blomstruktuur. H. corydaliflora Sweet word aangewys as lektotipe-spesie van seksie Hoarea.
