"Geometrical Land" Learning Media Design Material for Building Flat Side Spaces

Flat-sided space shapes are mathematical materials in the scope of geometry which discusses cubes, blocks, pyramids, and prisms. In this material, students often find it difficult to visualize objects and relate them to contextual problems. The role of teachers in overcoming these problems is certainly very necessary. One way that can be used is to utilize technology to create learning media. The application software that can be used is Articulate Storyline 3. This research aims to produce a learning media design for flat-sided building materials called "Geometrical Land". This research is part of development research which is limited to the development stage only. The stages carried out in this research include: needs analysis, media design, and media validation. The instrument used is a media expert and material expert validation sheet. There are 6 validators, consisting of 3 material expert validators and 3 media expert validators. The results of this development research are in the form of a percentage of the validation test scoring of material experts and media experts. The average percentage of validity test results for material experts was 86.18% and media experts showed 84.61%. This states that the learning media "Geometrical Land" is 'very valid' for use according to the conversion level of achievement.

Ethnomahematics Exploration in the Traditional Game of Sipak Rago

Education and culture cannot be separated in daily life. Ethnomathematics exists to bridge the gap between culture and education, especially in mathematics. Humans are unaware of activities that use basic mathematical concepts and ideas like counting, measuring (length, area, volume, and weight), number construction, games, and buying-selling activities. This study examines and analyzes the Minangkabau traditional games in the scope of geometry. This research is exploratory research with an ethnographic approach. The subjects of this study were 6 players of the Sipak Rago game. The data was collected through observation, documentation, and interview to find mathematical concepts in the Sipak Rago game. Based on the research, there are mathematical concepts in the Sipak Rago game like the concept of circle elements, circle circumference formula, circle area formula, and angle on a circle.

Mathematics Textbooks as Subject of Study: Producing Knowledge on the Presence of Geometry

Textbooks have been subject of national and international research and, in the Brazilian scenario, this thematic has been drawing researchers’ attention since the beginning of the 21st century. Focusing on the scope of geometry, the objective of this paper is to the share results of a study about the presence of Geometry in Mathematics Textbooks, based on the map of the research conducted by the Theorem - Reflections on Geometry Mathematical Education research group, which take the mathematics textbook as subject of study. For this, the use of textbooks is contextualized and a literature review is subsequently presented, addressing studies that discuss geometry in general and in its particularities, and, lastly, we present the theoretical foundation of the investigations conducted by the group. The results of these analyses are divided into two fronts: investigations regarding geometric contents and concepts and development of other thematics associated with the presence of geometry in mathematics textbooks. Lastly, the section quilting and projecting revises the group’s research fronts in a reflective way, interrelating them and relating them with other national and international fronts, in the light of a macro perspective. With this “patchwork”, we hope to contribute with the discussions on mathematics textbooks and the production of knowledge, especially in the geometry scope.

Mathematic Learning Material Capabilities on Special Needs

The purpose of this study was to see the application of students with special needs in inclusive schools and their absorption of Mathematics subject matter in the SMA National Examination 2018/2019 academic year. Although, the National Examination has legally abolished, the results of the last National Examination 2018/2019 can still be used to capture students' minimum academic abilities and also for reflection in order to improve the quality of education better. The ability of students can be seen from the results of the national exam, while the absorption of mathematics can be seen from the proportion of students with special needs in inclusive schools who can correctly answer questions on the National Mathematics Exam. The population of this study were all high school level students who took the National Examination for the 2018/2019 academic year, while the research sample was all inclusive high school students who took the National Examination for the 2018/2019 academic year. The data used is secondary data, namely the SMA National Exam data for the 2018/2019 academic year. Data analysis used Excel software, and then descriptive statistical analysis was carried out. The results showed the highest score of the National Mathematics Examination for students with special needs in inclusive schools was 54.02 and the lowest was 22.69 with an average score of 39.43. The average score of Mathematics for the Science Department is 45.66 (included in the poor category), the Language Department is 40.04 (including the poor category), while the Social Science Department is 29.28 (including the low category). The highest average absorption power of Mathematics in the Science department is 30%, in the scope of Algebra material, the lowest absorption is 23% in the scope of calculus material. In the social studies department, the highest average absorption power in mathematics is 29% each for algebra and statistics, the lowest absorption rate is 18% in the scope of Geometry and Trigonometry. Meanwhile, in the Language Department, the highest average absorption is algebra 38%, the lowest is 30% in the scope of Geometry and Trigonometry. The range of values for participants with special needs is very large so it needs assistance to improve the abilities of students. The weakness of special needs students in Mathematics is the material scope of Geometry and Trigonometry.

The Use of the Ontosemiotic Approach to an Analysis of Geometry in Brazilian Curricular Materials

The present article aims to present some partial results of the master dissertation titled "Geometry in Brazilian Curricular Materials by the Ontossemiotic Approach", under development in the Professional Master Program of Science and Mathematics Teaching of the Cruzeiro do Sul University in São Paulo. As presuppositions a research perspective that aims to qualitatively analyze curricular materials of the 5th year of elementary school in the scope of geometry. For the analysis in question, frameworks were developed based on didactic adaptations (epistemic, mediational and ecological) from the assumptions of the Ontosemiotic Approach. In this way, the article will discuss the abovementioned didactic adequacy frameworks in order to offer subsidies so that teachers can be guided when analyzing curricular materials.

Furniture design in the foodtruck area becomes the foundation in the form of rules that answer the problem of an activity. The process to produce an object that has a high value of economic, aesthetic and functional. In the method of applying geometry to a stoolcan be used as a reference in construction, supporting activities, capacity and integrity of the results of a design process, in the stoolthere are some basic problem identification and relevance to the geometry transformation process and examine any errors that must be avoided in a stooldesign with the aim of meeting standards, to minimize errors in a design concept stoolthat plays in the scope of geometry and shape transformation

Descartes, Pascal, and the Epistemology of Mathematics: The Case of the Cycloid

This paper deals with the very different attitudes that Descartes and Pascal had to the cycloid—the curve traced by the motion of a point on the periphery of a circle as the circle rolls across a right line. Descartes insisted that such a curve was merely mechanical and not truly geometric, and so was of no real mathematical interest. He nevertheless responded to enquiries from Mersenne, who posed the problems of determining its area and constructing its tangent. Pascal, in contrast, saw the cycloid as a paradigm of geometric intelligibil- ity, and he made it the focus of a series of challenge problems he posed to the mathematical world in 1658. After dealing with some of the history of the cycloid (including the work of Galileo, Mersenne, and Torricelli), I trace this difference in attitude to an underlying difference in the mathematical epistemologies of Descartes and Pascal. For Descartes, the truly geometric is that which can be expressed in terms of anite ratios between right lines, which in turn are expressible as closed polynomial equations. As Descartes pointed out, this means that ratios between straight and curved lines are not geometrically admissible, and curves (such as the cycloid) that require them must be banished from geometry. Pascal, in contrast, thought that the scope of geometry included curves such as the cycloid, which are to be studied by em- ploying inanitesimal methods and ratios between curved and straight lines.
