RESPONSE WITH A SELECT BIBLIOGRAPHY

AbstractIn this response to the articles in this issue, Southgate considers lessons to be learned in respect of science–religion teaching, and about his edited textbook God, Humanity and the Cosmos. He emphasizes the importance of collaborative work in theology. He then considers issues in evolutionary theodicy raised by other contributors, especially eschatology, divine passibility, and the status of the “only way” explanation of evolutionary suffering. Lastly, he engages with critiques of his work based on a preference for characterizing the disvalues of creation in terms of “mysterious fallenness.” The article is followed by a select bibliography of his published work since 1979.

INTEGRAL EDUCATION OF THE RELIGIOUS BASE TO STRAIGHTEN THE MINDS OF THE STATE OF INDONESIA

Secularism mainstream in the education field is now causing value-less knowledge. It can be seen in the ways Indonesian separate knowledge into science and religion in the education. Science and religion are separately understood, and they have lost their connection in ontology, epistemology, and axiology point of views. Therefore, people are in the “lost state”, religion is mistakenly understood. This study is aimed at finding the reasons why religion is misunderstood, the effects of the misunderstanding, and the concepts of religion-based integral education as the effort to solve the misunderstanding. Then, this study is focused on the epistemology of science, therefore the object of the study is human thought. Conceptual, philosophy, and religion approaches is used in the study. The data in this study are sociologist and normative sources. Meanwhile, the data analysis is abduction method. The result of the study shows that science tends to be positive in understanding something which is real and logical, things which are not logical are not considered as science. The secularism concept of science has gone wrong because science can be only understood to manage human life and despise the beyond. Lack of science understanding affects serious and harmful effects. Science may lose its purpose in helping human, the highest and the most capable God’s creature. Integrating science based on religion may affect peacefulness in the world and beyond. The imperfection in science is temporary, it can be fixed by knowledge which is absolute.

Norman Sheppard. 16 May 1921—10 April 2015

Norman Sheppard was an exceptional man as scientist, teacher and administrator, but he was also kind, generous, honourable and extremely modest. He was the international expert on the application of vibrational spectroscopy to molecular structure, in solids, on surfaces, in solution and in the gas phase. One significant feature of his science was that he was always on the lookout for new developments in spectroscopy to apply to chemical structure (e.g. NMR, RAIRS, EELS). Always passionate about expanding higher education opportunities, he moved from Cambridge in 1964—as Professor of Chemical Physics—to help Professor Alan Katritzky (FRS) found the chemistry department at the new University of East Anglia. He was heavily involved in national and international matters: council member of the Royal Society; president of the Faraday Division of the Royal Society of Chemistry; member of the Infrared and Raman Discussion Group and first chairman of the NMR Discussion Group; member of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry and several of its committees. His early work in two major areas of spectroscopy was very important in underpinning their use in chemical analysis, central to industry and forensic science. He was a devoted family man. In his spare time he was fascinated by architecture, nature and photography. Latterly he became interested in the science–religion debate and the philosophy of science.

Increased Student Learning Outcomes at Colloidal Materials Integrated Islamic Values Through the Scientific Approach

The development of the current educational system, has focused integralistly that removes barriers between science and religion. But there are still many Islamic school that have not yet integrated the values of Islam in learning, so it is necessary to use a certain approach. Learning through a scientific approach has a very strategic role in improving student learning outcomes. The purpose of this research is to know and describe the improvement of student learning outcomes in the learning of colloidal chemistry integrated Islamic values through scientific approach. This research uses experimental method, with pretest and posttest control group design design. The results showed that there was an increase in learning outcomes in the control and experimental classes altogether in the low improvement category, but the improvement in both quality / statistics was no significant difference. The percentage increase in the experimental class (10.1%) was greater than the control class (5.5%). The conclusion in this research is the study of integrated colloidal chemistry of Islam through scientific approach can improve student learning outcomes.

Drugs and Religion: Contributions to the Debate on the Science–Religion Interface

In this article, we present the results of our research, which aims to comprehend how the relationship between religion and the use of drugs operates in various contexts, but especially in the context of a prohibitionist paradigm. On the one hand, the story of human religious worship entails drug use, and on the other hand, religious groups form a set of important protagonists in the current “drug problem”, whether as moral agents or direct action activists (individual or community-based), and above all in close contact with the users. In one of these studies, we evaluated the public presence of Brazilian religions that use psychoactive substances ritually, and we verify that in the State’s regulatory process of this use, the presence of the scientific reference was a defining factor in the creation of public policies, and therefore, within the scope of civil rights for religious freedom. In another study, we evaluated the discourse of twenty religious leaders in the city of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte—Brazil about drug use. We perceived that they have, in general, three stances: pure and simple condemnation, with no corresponding action in the public sphere; the use of substances considered drugs, along with public actions focused on the effort to gain acceptance of this practice; and finally, “comprehensive” condemnation, with frequent public group action or rehabilitation centers. Scientific references, in this study, permeate the discourse as an authenticating force in the religious speech. Ultimately, this reality allows us to question how the academic discourse unfolds in the scope of religion, interfering in the quality and intensity of its actions with relation to drugs, and we conclude that academic posture, often underestimated with relation to the religious institutions, does not aid in the effort to confront the social problems linked to drug abuse. Therefore, an increased interaction between academia and these institutions can generate a new approach to this very serious social problem in Brazil.

Taking Other Religions Seriously: A Comparative Survey of Hindus in India

While the study of religion in political science has reemerged as a growing field of inquiry in the last few decades, most research still focuses on Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. What religion is and how it is measured has largely been conceptualized through the lens of these Abrahamic faiths. This article, by contrast, examines Hinduism, the world’s oldest and third most populous religion. I randomly assigned closed-ended or open-ended surveys about Hindu religiosity across and within two demographically similar villages in the north Indian state of Bihar. A comparison of survey responses from a sample of 100 respondents suggests that many Hindus: a.) do not recognize basic analytical categories scholars use in the social scientific study of religion; b.) do not differentiate between ostensibly religious and secular categories; and c.) recognize features of everyday life, such as attire or obedience to rules about purity and auspiciousness, as religious in ways that may be different from most western religious communities. This article productively challenges how political scientists think about what religion is and how to measure it, tasks that must precede explaining how it affects political behavior.

Dois «sonhadores práticos» no campo de reformas sociais de medicina: Tomás Judym e José Tomás de Sousa Martins

After Romanticism, the mythical-legendary past was questioned by Positivist Science and the spirit of social reforms, gaining new literary contours in patriotically and politically committed works that were sensitive to the problems of society. The work of Stefan Żeromski (1864-1925), who in the first decades of the twentieth century was considered the greatest Polish novelist, caused the purely aesthetic function of Literature to lose ground, instigating the emotional side and social consciousness of its readers, their compassion and willingness to act. The protagonist of the novel Ludzie bezdomni (1900) (Homeless Men), Doctor Tomás (Tomasz) Judym, is a self-made man who, assuming responsibility for the misery of the masses of the proletariat (first in Paris, then in Warsaw, in Cisy and Silesia), renounces his own happiness and the love of Joaninha, and dedicates his life as a doctor to the poor and to the fight against social injustice. The nonconformity and commitment of Dr. Judym as the first «practical dreamer» of the social cause became proverbial in Polish, characterizing the romantic attitude free of financial gain in the time of capitalism’s unbridled progress. José Tomás de Sousa Martins (1843-1897) was a real «practical dreamer», an unparalleled figure in Portuguese Science, a physician and professor at the Medical-Surgical School of Lisbon, who fought tuberculosis free of charge. In 1910, Jaime Cortesão outlined the profile of Sousa Martins, emphasizing that in Philosophy he was positivist, materialist and determinist-fatalist, going far beyond the scientific superstition that took those who prized Science beyond the limits of reasonable, beyond the limit of mankind. In fact, Sousa Martins was a committed pasteurian and shared the scientific ideas of the French master. For Sousa Martins, Pasteur was one of the saints to be worshiped in the vast religion of Science. Dr. Tomás Judym and Sousa Martins entered, respectively, in Polish Literature and in the History of Public Health in Portugal as «lay saints», paradigmatic figures of action in the field of social reforms, physicians at the service of Man, who did not see in religion the way to their salvation, but rather in Science. And so the figures of the two «practical dreamers» become even more fascinating and recommendable to the presentation of the debate over the spirit of reforms and the (re)construction of modernity.

Knowledge, attitude and practice of students towards blood donation in Arsi university and Adama science and technology university: a comparative cross sectional study

BackgroundBlood can save millions of lives. Even though people do not donate blood regularly, there is a constant effort to balance the supply and demand of blood. The aim of this study was, therefore, to determine the knowledge, attitude and practice of blood donation between university students.MethodsThe comparative cross sectional study design was used in Adama Science and Technology University and Arsi University from April 11–May 2, 2016.360 students were selected using stratified sampling. Frequencies and proportions were computed. Chi-Square and logistic regressions were carried out and associations were considered significant at p<0.05.ResultThe study revealed that there was a significant knowledge difference (χ2 = 152.779, p<0.001) and Attitude difference (χ2 = 4.142, p = 0.042) between Health Science students of Arsi University and Non-Health Science students of Adama Science and Technology University. The gender of the students (AOR = 3.150, 95% CI: 1.313, 7.554) was a significant predictor of the level of knowledge of Health Science students. The ethnicity of students (AOR = 2.085, 95% CI: 1.025, 4.243) was a significant predictor of the level of an attitude of Health Science students and gender of students (AOR = 0.343, 95% CI: 0.151, 0.779) was a significant predictor of the level of an attitude of Health Science students. Concerning Non-Health Science students, religion (AOR = 10.173, 95% CI: 1.191, 86.905) and original residence (AOR = 0.289, 95% CI: 0.094, 0.891) were a significant predictor of the level of knowledge of Non-Health Science students. Gender (AOR = 0.389, 95% CI: 0.152, 0.992) and Year of study (AOR = 0.389(0.164, 0.922) were significant predictor of level of attitude of Non-Health Science students. Year of study (AOR = 5.159, 95% CI: 1.611, 16.525) was a significant predictor of level of practice of Health Science students.ConclusionSignificant knowledge difference and attitude difference were observed between students from Arsi University and Adama Science and Technology University.

Worlds Conflicting

François-Vincent Raspail (1794–1878) and Theodor Schwann (1810–1882) postulated—in 1827 and 1838, respectively—that plants and animals consist of, and originate from, cells. Whereas Raspail is mainly remembered for his involvement in the revolutions of 1830 and 1848, little is known about his scientific work. Schwann, by contrast, is regarded as one of the founders of cell theory, but historians of biology have hardly taken his philosophical, religious, and political ideas into account. Paying particular attention to Schwann’s unpublished writings, this paper reconstructs the research agendas of Raspail and Schwann, and contrasts the philosophical and political beliefs and incentives behind them. Whereas Raspail was a proponent of republicanism and materialism, Schwann opposed the modernist agenda of explaining nature and humankind without God, as well a democratic reshaping of society. Contrary to the prevailing historical narrative, this paper argues that cell theory did not emerge exclusively in conjunction with the rise of liberalism and materialism. Rather, the idea of a unifying principle of organic development encompassed different and even antagonistic visions of nature, humankind, society, and the role of religion in science. Christian beliefs and values in science and religious education: an essay to assist the work of teachers of both subjects

Teachers, both of science and of religion, have to help pupils to learn about the links between these subjects. An effective way to support this learning should start from the beliefs and ideas that pupils already have, ideas which might well be influenced by public debates, often characterised by controversy, between those holding strong beliefs about the two areas. This article aims to give teachers a framework of information and argument to guide their design of teaching in this overlap area. In the first of three main sections, there is a summary account of the history of the science–religion relationships, showing that over the last two millennia they have oscillated between positive support and negative controversy. A second section analyses this history in terms of three models of the relationship. One is a model of conflict in which each disputes the knowledge claims of the other. Another is one of mutual independence in which each accepts to work within its side of an agreed boundary. Finally, there is a model of collaboration, in which each discerns positive contributions that the other can make to its own insights. The third main section discusses the implications of the preceding analyses for curriculum and pedagogy in both science education and religious education, with a stress on the similarity between the pedagogic aims and values to which teachers of both subjects should work.
