How the Music Machine Makes Myths Real: AI, Holograms, and Ashley Eternal

Since ancient times, music has been instrumental in giving life to the stories we build our identities and cultures around. I will examine how, in our time, music creates new myths by creating its own heroes and heroines through capital and the star system. In traditional literary and cultural analysis, a distinction was drawn between the natural and the supernatural when discussing literary mythology; in the twentieth century, an equivalent distinction was made in works of art that, in Baudrillard’s terminology, make use of the realms of the real and the “hyperreal” (1981). In today’s mythmaking, the supernatural has been largely replaced by the technological, and recent developments blur the line between science fiction and fantasy; tech has become megalotech. A recent episode of the television series Black Mirror, “Rachel, Jack, and Ashley Too” (2019), explores these concepts with an examination of the pros and cons of replacing human performers with AI simulacra.

Winging it: visions, automation, and narrating alternative mobility futures

This paper is concerned with the way that futures for autonomous mobility are envisioned, specifically in industry representations. We begin by analysing a pair of representative commercial narratives around future autonomous mobility, from Wing and Audi, finding them to be simplistic, exclusionary, and focused on individual freedoms. Building on this analysis, we draw on ideas around mobility justice and creative mobilities methods to craft an alternative science fiction vignette, one that augments a future from a gig worker’s perspective. In doing so, we foreground multiple injustices and insecurities, and aim to highlight the potential within creative and narrative methods to complicate dominant stories about technological futures, to articulate alternative futures, explore them, research with them, and make other futures more tangible. The paper concludes by discussing the need for such approaches given the dominant framings around autonomous mobility futures.

Metric compatibility and determination in complete metric spaces

The local slope operator was introduced in De Giorgi et al. (Atti Accad Naz Lincei Rend Cl Sci Fis Mat Nat 68:180–187, 1980) to study gradient flow dynamics in metric spaces. This tool has now become a cornerstone in metric evolution equations (see, e.g., Ambrosio et al. (Gradient flows in metric spaces and in the space of probability measures, Lectures in Mathematics. Birkhauser, 2008). Very recently, in Daniilidis and Salas (Proc Am Math Soc 150:4325–4333, 2022), it was established that Lipschitz inf-compact functions are uniquely determined by their local slope and critical values. Compactness played a paramount role in this result, ensuring in particular the existence of critical points. We hereby emancipate from this restriction and establish a determination result for merely bounded from below functions, by adding an assumption controlling the asymptotic behavior. This assumption is trivially fulfilled if f is inf-compact. In addition, our result is not only valid for the (De Giorgi) local slope, but also for the main paradigms of average descent operators as well as for the global slope, case in which the asymptotic assumption becomes superfluous. Therefore, the present work extends simultaneously the metric determination results of Daniilidis and Salas (Proc Am Math Soc 150:4325–4333, 2022) and Thibault and Zagrodny (Commun Contemp Math 25(7):2250014, 2023).

The power of space opera: energetic melodrama and the ecologies of Dune

ABSTRACT This essay examines the history of space opera and melodrama through the lens of science fiction and especially Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel Dune, with recent film adaptations by Denis Villeneuve (2021, 2024). Drawing on scholarship that explores the imperial and energy imaginary of science fiction, it argues that space opera is a subgenre of science fiction which amplifies melodrama’s ideological and structural critique of domestic and colonial power and the energetic regimes that produce them. As an energodrama, Dune deploys contemporary ecosystem science, with its tracing of energetic flows and circuits of resource interdependence, to detail the impact of resource extraction on ecologies and colonial territories, reading this pattern across a range of contested histories, from the guano wars of Peru, to the first Arab Revolt of WWI, to the nuclear brinksmanship of the cold war. Recent film adaptations of Dune restore the visual and sonic texture of this critique, amplifying the melodramatic texture of the novel and providing new sonic and visual ecologies that bring the viewer and auditor into visceral contact with those histories and the territories they remade.

The Geopolitical Imaginaries in Moby-Dick; or, The Whale and Hakugei: Legend of the Moby Dick

This paper explores the geopolitical imaginaries in Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick; or, The Whale (1851) and in the Japanese science fiction animation titled Hakugei: Legend of the Moby Dick (1997-1999) by the Japanese animation artist Osamu Dezaki. Although it is an adaptation of Moby-Dick, the setting of Hakugei has been creatively changed from the sea to space. In the mid-nineteenth century, when Melville chose the sea as the setting of his quest novel, the sea was inextricably intertwined with the nineteenth-century myth of U.S. expansionism. Melville presents a double vision of imaginary islands in the South Sea and the actual geopolitical relationships between existing transatlantic countries. Yet in the second half of the twentieth century, especially in the wake of Transpacific tensions, the sea as a place of quest among Japanese writers could not be delineated in the same kind of prefigurative language used by Melville, such as by drawing on symbolism. Instead, the animation reflects a Cold War psychology that was prevalent among Japanese after the defeat of World War II. As this paper suggests, Hakugei displays both fear and hope for the geopolitical transformation of the Pacific Rim countries and their future safety by choosing outer space as a site for the fable. It is in this way that the Japanese animator Dezaki draws on Melville’s Moby-Dick as a source text by engaging geopolitics, anti-war psychology, and uneasiness toward expansionism. Melville’s pacifism can be argued for as major transcultural influence, at the very least, driving Hakugei’s anime characterization. In fact, going beyond drawing on certain characters, including Ahab, Dezaki retains Melville’s anxiety over the proximity of creation and destruction in yet another era of increasing concern for world peace.

Science Fiction in the Anthropocene

This article catalogs major recent trends in ecological science fiction (sf), focused primarily on sf published after the completion of N.K. Jemisin's paradigm-setting Broken Earth trilogy in 2017. Major subdivisions in the genre include dystopian and antiutopian narratives about climate collapse, technocratic solutionism, reckoning with climate change as a colonial project, intergenerational conflict, and posthuman formulation. Noting that sf both as literary genre and as fan community encompasses a wide range of political perspectives ranging from reactionary hypercapitalism to utopian socialism, the article does not seek to advance any particular political position but rather seeks to name the major currents of political and ethical debate within sf in this moment of ecological crisis. The article concludes with a brief discussion of the way the sf genre, in reframing the present as the history of multiple possible futures, calls on us to act to shape that future toward human thriving.

Techno-ethical concerns related to genetic sequencing reports

Recombinant DNA technologies of the current era, most of which are comparable to past works of science fiction, have had diverse and significant impacts on social life. Among them, genetic sequencing deserves particular attention. The widespread use of genetic testing has raised numerous concerns regarding autonomy, confidentiality and privacy. In this context, the proliferation of ‘gene for X’ reports influences debates about the potentially beneficial or detrimental uses of genetics. While several studies have reported concerns related to the collection, storage and use of genetic data, few have considered the technical shortcomings that can affect the reliability of interpretation of sequencing data. In this essay, we will cover some of the current practices of genetic testing and safety aspects of DNA data. To evaluate the reliability of DNA data we will raise the question whether an ‘overestimation’ of researchers' results might reflect an ‘underestimation’ of our genetic make-up in terms of the limitations of the parameters necessary for the correct interpretation of genomic DNA. Following that question we will highlight the responsibility of researchers for proper science communication to avoid misleading information about genetic sequencing data.

Afrofuturist Values for the Metaverse (Extended Abstract)

Many emerging technologies, such as the immersive VR and AR devices forming the metaverse, are not just reminiscent of but inspired by devices found in popular science fiction texts. Yet, the stories that these technologies are drawn from do not often center marginalized communities and people of color. In this article, we propose that builders and users of these technologies turn to diverse creative texts as inspiration for the ethical codes that will shape the ways that these technologies are built and used. A study of 39 speculative fiction texts, including 20 that we identified as Afrofuturist, revealed three overarching themes that serve as recommendations for the creation and maintenance of a diverse and inclusive metaverse: Collective Power, Inclusive Engagement, and Cultural Specificity. We outline each recommendation through a textual analysis of three Afrofuturist texts – Esi Edugyan’s Washington Black (2018), Roger Ross Williams’ Traveling While Black (2019), and Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther (2018) – and specify the undercurrents of collectivity and co-production that bind them together. We suggest collaborative and critical reading methods for industry professionals and community members which may help to shape democratic processes governing the future of AI.

Nanotechnological Innovations in Healthcare

Nanotechnology is a concept much older and more prevalent than you may think. This article will delve into the applications of nanotechnology in various fields of medicine. Using ideas and research, old and new, this publication uses various studies to explore how nanotechnology saves, improves, and, in some cases, enables life. Frankly, the fields discussed further in this paper have nothing in common other than significant and interesting applications of nanotechnology. However, even with this diverse array of fields, only a fraction of nanotechnology’s massive impact across medicinal practice altogether is covered. Nanotechnology has broken into almost every major sector of medicine, finding use from routine practices, such as drug delivery, all the way to extraordinary procedures, such as bone regeneration. This article opens up on the applications of nanotechnology in the cardiovascular, reproductive, antiviral, skeletal, and surgical fields. A substantial amount of research has been conducted to show that nanotechnology is no longer limited to science fiction, and has a major impact that will only grow with time and technology. Doctors and scientists are making full use of nanotechnology’s capabilities by using it in any and all cases that require precision and effectiveness that is either impossible or extremely difficult and dangerous when performed by human hands. This makes many treatments less hazardous and more effective, saving and improving an exponential number of lives as time goes on.

Of robots and ancient mysteries: Representations of Jōmon figurines as cultural heritage and popular culture

Final Jōmon ceramic figurines known as shakōki dogū have been incorporated into popular culture for decades in Japan, but few studies have examined how these sources represent shakōki dogū or how they contribute to public meaning making about the past. Using perspectives from archaeological representation studies, this paper explores trends in when, where, and how shakōki dogū appear in Japanese media, such as anime, manga, and games. In didactic sources, shakōki dogū are predominantly characterized as female figurines connected to Jōmon ritual and Japanese cultural origins. While the dogū observed here were often depicted as ancient and magical, they were more likely to be masculine, antagonistic, and generic symbols of a distant past, rather than references to the Jōmon or Japanese heritage. This departure from a divine feminine interpretation is discussed in relation to the video game industry, science fiction and fantasy genres, and Arahabaki in the popular mind.

‘Martenaut Waves’ in the Music of the French Avant-Garde Cinematographer of the First Half of the 20th Century (on the example of the creativity of A. Honegger)

The purpose of the study is to reveal the figurative, semantic and symbolic specificity of the interpretation of the timbre of "Martenaut waves" in the music of the French avant-garde cinematography of the first half of the 20th century, including in the work of A. Honegger. Research methodology. Cultural-historical, interdisciplinary historical-cultural, as well as analytical-musicological methods were essential for this work. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that it introduces for the first time into the circulation of art historians the materials related to the film music of A. Honegger and its timbral specificity, marked by an appeal to the semantic and expressive features of the "Martenaut waves". Conclusions. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, as a result of rapid scientific and technical progress, cinematography came to the forefront of world art. The unity of cinematography as a synthetic art and music is strengthened by the emergence of sound cinema in 1926-1927, in which music is recorded on the same film as the image. The use of electric musical instruments, including "Martenaut waves", becomes organic in this process. Thanks to their unusual timbre, they acquired the meaningful status of the embodiment of "the materialisation of the intangible." The world of hallucinations and dreams, mystical spiritual revelations and unusual natural phenomena – such was the range of images that were conveyed with the help of this instrument in French film music of the 1930s and 1940s. A. Honegger worked most fruitfully in this field during the mentioned period, whose creative output includes more than forty soundtracks, including those using "Martenaut waves". One of the first films in which the expressive timbre of this instrument is used was the science fiction film "The End of the World" (1931) directed by A. Gans, as well as the animated film "Idea" (1934) directed by B. Bartosh and artist F. Mazerel. In the musical accompaniment of these films, the timbre of the "Martenaut waves" occupies almost the most important place, revealing the connection of the instrument with the sphere of the Sacred and the Cosmic and the spiritual and stylistic searches of European modern culture.

After the end of schools: Cultivating abolitionist visions for a world without carceral education

After the end of the world is a speculative concept used to imagine what life could be after the world “ends” envisioning a new world that does not currently exist. Taking up Gumbs’ metaphor, this essay explores what education could be after the end of school, imaging a world beyond education as we know it to be. In order to imagine a world where education is not inherently carceral, I use speculative fiction, as both a world-making method and genre, to cultivate abolitionist visions for education. This essay exams the ways speculative fiction has been used to articulate abolitionist struggles and/or futures, as well embody abolitionist ways of knowing. Just as the goal of abolition is not only to eliminate prisons, but to end the conditions that perpetuate the societal need for prisons, this essay uses abolitionist praxis as science fiction to consider what it would mean to not just eliminating schools but to end the conditions that sustain and support marginalization and criminalization of particularly BIPOC, LGBTQ + 2S, and disabled young youth. By engaging speculative fiction as an abolitionist praxis this essay offers an opportunity to envision education beyond the limits of our current imagination.

From Boring Tests to Engaging Adventures: A Game-Based Learning Approach in LMS

The paper explores a game-based approach to language placement tests within Learning Management Systems (LMS), addressing issues of incorrect course placement and student disengagement. By gamifying assessments, the initiative aims to create a motivational and playful environment that accurately estimates students' language skills. The game design is guided by player type models and motivational frameworks, ensuring an engaging experience that caters to diverse player motivations. The game, "Journey to Mars," is set in a science fiction environment and uses multimedia elements and interactive modules to integrate educational content seamlessly. Methods for game analysis were adopted to create a gamified placement test in three steps. First, we adopted the basic game structure from the goals of the placement test. Second, we created plot points and settings and derived certain style and interface elements to create a coherent gaming environment. Third, we enriched the gaming experience with additional elements like badges and secret elements. The development process involved utilizing the ILIAS LMS tools, generative AI for content creation, and implementing progressive difficulty and feedback systems to enhance the educational value. Initial feedback indicates positive engagement and motivation among students.

Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” is a crucial work in Gothic literature and science fiction, exploring human ambition, innovation, and isolation. Using Carl Jung's archetypal imagery, this study examines the novel’s key themes and characters. A qualitative content analysis was conducted on the text and secondary literary sources. Prominent archetypes identified include the Overreacher, the Monster, the Promethean Figure, the Wanderer, and the Tragic Hero. Victor Frankenstein is analyzed as both the Overreacher and the Tragic Hero, symbolizing hubris and downfall. The Monster embodies isolation and alienation, while Victor’s act of creation reflects the Promethean Figure, symbolizing innovation and ethical dilemmas. Both characters are portrayed as Wanderers, emphasizing their existential quests for meaning and belonging. These archetypes play a central role in the narrative. Shelley’s use of archetypal imagery enhances the novel’s critique of scientific advancement and ethical responsibility. Victor’s tragic heroism serves as a cautionary tale about unchecked ambition, while the Monster’s plight underscores the societal need for empathy and acceptance.

The Presentation of Brain-computer Interfaces As Autonomy-enhancing Therapy Products

This paper explores the societal and individual acceptance of technologies for the human body, focusing on brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), particularly Elon Musk's Neuralink. BCIs promise a direct connection between the brain and computers. Their acceptance depends on general aspects such as feasibility and usefulness. In the case of brain implants, they should also not jeopardize the user's autonomy or have a dehumanizing effect. In the case of innovative technologies that are still in development, such as BCIs, acceptance depends largely on their public relation presentation. The article uses the case of Neuralink to analyze how new technologies for human bodies, and specifically BCIs, are presented as acceptable technologies. Analyzing Neuralink's public relations communication, the study reveals how the company constructs a vision of a plausible and desirable future, countering skepticism often associated with science fiction tropes. The article emphasizes the relevance of the categorization of BCIs and shows how the presentation of BCI as an autonomy-enhancing therapy product can positively influence the acceptability of the technology. By addressing key topics of ethical discourse, such as autonomy and identity, Neuralink attempts to create social acceptance for its innovative but controversial BCI technology. The results contribute to the understanding of the complicated dynamics between technological development, public relations, and societal values.

The future of tourism: an interview with Dr Daniel Wright about the genre of science fiction

Science fiction is a powerful medium to imagine the future, which students love as it is provocative. In the interview, Dr Wright reflects upon his own writing from immortality to the end of the world.Originality/valueThe power of science fiction, as a genre of transformation, skepticism and thinking out of the box, is often missing in futures studies and scenario planning.

The effectiveness of using science fiction films to foster creativity in a biological context

ABSTRACT The use of science fiction resources to enhance creativity is an innovative approach that is gaining international attention. This study combines science fiction films (SFFs) based biological learning with the Creative Problem Solving (CPS) model to offer the Biology in Science Fiction Films course in high school. During the course, we assessed students’ creative thinking propensities using the Creativity Assessment Packet and evaluated creativity in students-created micro-science fictions (micro-SFs) by the consensus assessment technique. The results showed that after the theme-based instruction: (1) the students’ creative thinking propensities produced a significant increase in the overall (p = 0.005), with highly significant increases in the imaginative dimension (p = 0.004) and the challenging dimension (p = 0.030); (2) Students’ scores on micro-SFs created in the post-test improved over the pre-test, but their pre- and post-test gaps have not yet reached the level of significant difference. The study indicates that the course has the potential to offer a new avenue for the development of students’ creativity. Collaborating across disciplines may be able to enhance students’ creativity in a more comprehensive manner.

Social Reproductive Labor and Uto/Dystopia: An Analysis of Leila, Midnight Robber and Woman World

ABSTRACT Contemporary science fiction and speculative fiction with utopian/dystopian aspects from South Asia and the Caribbean have rarely been studied in tandem. Furthermore, no scholarly work has analyzed such texts produced under conditions of contemporary capitalism in the light of social reproduction theory which considers social reproductive labor that rejuvenates labor power. I study Leila (2017) by the Indian writer Prayaag Akbar, Midnight Robber (2000) by the Jamaican-born Nalo Hopkinson, and Woman World (2018) by the diasporic Indian writer Aminder Dhaliwal to connect social reproductive labor and utopianism and argue that social reproductive labor rejuvenates the labor power of utopian agents in social reproductive spaces such as homes, schools, hospitals, gardens etc. resisting dystopian conditions, nurturing hope, and rejuvenating utopian thinking. I question how utopianism is related to social reproductive labor in postcolonial contexts of the Global South, and propose that 1) dystopian scenarios are brought about by control of social reproductive spaces and 2) progress/betterment is actualized with renewal and rejuvenation via social reproductive labor. I contend that relating twenty-first-century utopianism to social reproduction is a valuable and novel approach, especially in postcolonial contexts where conditions of labor have been determined by complex histories of colonialism, enslavement, and indentured labor.
