Preference for Traditional Medical Care to Orthodox Medical Care Among Secondary School Students in Rural Area of Nigeria

Most rural dwellers of developing countries often patronise unstandardized traditional medical care when they are ill. The study determined the reasons for preference of trado- medical care to standard orthodox medicine among secondary school students in Nigeria. A cross sectional study was carried out in three secondary schools located at Imesi-Ile, Osun State Nigeria. Respondents were recruited by multistage sampling technique. Fifty students each were selected from final year Junior Secondary School class, senior secondary classes 1 and 2 without gender bias. Pre-tested semi- structured questionnaires were employed to elicit data on their choice of preference for traditional medicine to orthodox medic-care. The results were analysed using SPSS version 20. Most respondents were females, 77 (51.3%). About 113 (75.3%) reported that they preferred traditional care to orthodox treatment because the later was too expensive for them to afford. About 108 (72%) adopted traditional medicine because of parents’ choice. Those who reported easy accessibility to traditional medicine as a choice for its preference were 85 (56.6%), while 78 (52%) believed that traditional medicines cure faster than orthodox, others reported they have been using traditional medicine from childhood (60.7%), and for some traditional medicine was preferred due to their friend’s choice (54.0%). Most youths preferred trado-medical care due to high cost of orthodox medicine and wrong perceptions. Proper education to correct wrong notions among youths and improving the economic power of the people will help the community.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in The Treatment of Social Anxiety Among Secondary School Students in Rural Area of Oyo State, Nigeria

Statement of the problem: In a school setting, the stress, frustration and trauma of being socially anxious amidst other individuals could be devastating and detrimental to the psychological well-being of adolescents. Socially anxious adolescents often are unable to function adequately with peers and significant others. Thus, the impact of social anxiety appears to be highly handicapping and create maladjustment in most aspects of their life such as social, intellectual personality and academic achievement. This study therefore intends to use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for the treatment of social anxiety among adolescents in the secondary schools in the rural area of Oyo state, Nigeria. Methodology: A pretest-posttest control group quasi experimental research design was used in the study. Findings: Four hypotheses were raised in this study, the results obtained shows that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy was effective in the treatment of social anxiety among the participants than control group. Conclusion : Adolescents need favourable atmosphere devoid of psychological problems in order to minimize the problems of social anxiety. Recommendations are made for government to employ well informed counseling psychologist in secondary schools. This would ensure a thriving and healthy society, where individuals can interact positively to ensure national growth.

The road not taken: sexuality education and its associations with sexual knowledge and attitudes among senior high school students in rural areas of Western China

The poor performance and limited availability of sexuality education programs in rural areas of western China increase the danger of younger cohorts being exposed to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and engaging in risky sexual behaviors. A traditionally conservative culture, low levels of economic development and the relative lack of faculty resources all contribute to the weakness of sexuality education efforts. This study uses a sample of 164 boys and 195 girls who were senior high school students aged 15–19 in rural western China in 2017. The study aims to explore sexuality education, and sexual and reproductive behaviors, and to identify associations between sexuality education and sexual knowledge and attitudes among adolescents in rural western China. The results reveal a positive association between courses about reproductive health and lectures about STDs, and sexual knowledge; and a positive association between lectures about STDs and sexual attitudes. Our study also found that access to consulting services provided by governmental organization in the field of family planning and reproductive health helped rural adolescents enhance their sexual knowledge. Making such services available appears to offer a feasible method to develop a comprehensive sexuality education system in western China. The study concludes that an improved school-based sexuality education program strictly implemented as a part of the standard school curriculum is an effective way to increase sexual knowledge and promote de-stigmatized sexual attitudes among adolescents in rural western China.

Mediating effects of anxiety and depression on social support and suicidal ideation among rural middle school students in Sichuan

Objective To explore the relationships among social support, depression, anxiety and suicide ideation among middle school students in rural areas of south Sichuan Province so as to provide a scientific basis for promoting middle school students’ mental health and reducing suicide ideation. Methods A sum of 2 217 students of grade 7 and 10 from 2 township middle schools in mountainous areas of Zizhong County, Sichuan Province, were investigated by means of typical sampling and cluster random sampling. Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), Self-rating Scale for Depression (SDS), Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and Self-compiled adolescent health questionnaire were used to measure suicidal ideation, and structural equation model was used for statistical analysis. Results The depression score of middle school students was (13.51±12.57), and the self-rating scale for Depression score of girls was (14.61±12.67), higher than that of boys (12.24±12.34). The SSRS score of Social Support Rating Scale of junior high school students was (35.49±5.88), which was higher than that of senior high school students (34.70±5.43), and the differences were of statistical significance ( t = 4.46, 2.67, P <0.05). The results of structural equation model showed that depression and anxiety directly affected suicidal ideation, and the standardized effects were respectively 0.11 (95% CI = 0.06–0.16) and 0.09 (95% CI =0.05–0.14). Depression and anxiety were the intermediate variables in the relationship between social support and suicidal ideation, and the mediating effects were respectively −0.46 (95% CI = −0.51– –0.41) and −0.21 (95% CI = −0.27– –0.16). Studying period could play a mediating role in the indirect effect made by social support on suicide ideation through anxiety. Conclusion Anxiety and depression have significant mediating effect on the relationship between social support and suicidal ideation among middle school students in rural areas of south Sichuan province. Anxiety and depression intervention are important measures to reduce suicide ideation among low social supporters. 【摘要】 目的 探讨农村中学生社会支持、抑郁、焦虑及自杀意念的关系, 为促进中学生心理健康、降低自杀意念提 供科学依据。 方法 采用典型抽样和整群随机抽样相结合的方法对四川省资中县山区的 2 所乡镇中学共 2 217 名初一和 髙一全部学生展开为期 3 年的追踪调査。使用社会支持评定量表 (Social Support Rating Scale, SSRS)、抑郁自评量表 (Self- rating Depression Scale, SDS)、焦虑自评量表 (Self-rating Anxiety Scale, SAS)、自编自杀意念的条目进行调査, 通过构建一般 及群组分析的结构方程模型探讨变量间的关系。 结果 中学生抑郁得分为 (13.51±12.57) 分, 女生抑郁得分为 (14.61± 12.67) 分, 男生为 (12.24±12.34) 分; 初中生社会支持得分为 (35.49±5.88) 分, 髙中生为 (34.70±5.43) 分, 差异均有统计学意 义 ( t 值分别为 4.46, 2.67, P 值均<0.05)。抑郁、焦虑直接影响自杀意念, 标准化效应分别为0.11 (95% CI = 0.06~0.16)、0.09 (95% CI =0.05~0.14)。抑郁、焦虑是社会支持与自杀意念关系中的中介变量, 中介效应值分别为 −0.46 (95% CI = −0.51~ −0.41)、−0.21 (95% CI = −0.27~−0.16)。学段在社会支持通过焦虑对自杀意念的间接关系中具有调节作用。 结论 农村 中学生焦虑、抑郁在社会支持与自杀意念关系中有中介效应, 焦虑和抑郁干预是在低社会支持者中降低自杀意念的重要 措施。

Knowledge, attitude, and behaviour about healthy snacks selection with health literacy in primary school students at the rural area

There are many kinds of snacks offered at elementary schools. Snacks that offered or sold in the school area sometimes are not healthy snacks. The aims of this study to conduct the relationship of knowledge, attitude, and behavior about healthy snacks selection with health literacy at elementary school students in rural area. This study used a quantitative method with cross sectional approach. Data analysis used univariate and bivariate analysis using SPSS 22 software. Most of the respondents were 11 years old as many as 31 people (52%). Most respondents as many as 34 people (56.67%) have a high knowledge. Majority of respondents have a positive attitude as many as 60 people (100%), 34 respondents (57%) selected healthy snacks, 60 respondents (53.3%) get health information from the teacher at school. Knowledge, attitudes, and behavior are related to the health literacy of elementary school students in rural areas (p = 0,000). Most students (32 = 53%) have health literacy insufficient. Counseling and discussion about health is needed, especially the selection of healthy snacks for elementary school students by health workers, school teachers, parents and the distribution of health information media, especially print media about the selection of healthy snacks.

Influencing factors of depressive symptoms of rural middle school students in Zizhong County based on two-level Logistic regression model

To understand the prevalence of depressive symptoms of middle school students in rural areas of Zizhong County, and to analyze its main influencing factors. In October 2015, two rural middle schools in Zizhong County, Sichuan Province, were selected to conduct a self-administered questionnaire survey(general demographic characteristics, the center for epidemiological studies depression scale(CES-D), self-esteem scale(SES) and connor-davidson resilience scale(CD-RICS)) on all the students(there were 2744 effective persons, including 1308 boys and 1436 girls, 554 middle school students and 2190 high school students), and then carried out a follow-up survey every semester. The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 30. 5%(in the baseline survey, it was 26. 7%, the third 35. 7% and the fifth 29. 8%), and the rate of female students was 30. 3%, higher than that of male students 22. 9%(χ~2=19. 72, P&lt;0. 05). The main influencing factors of depressive symptoms of rural middle school students in Sichuan were gender(β=0. 201, P=0. 001), be aware of whether teacher liked or not(β=0. 228, P=0. 005), be aware of whether classmates liked or not(β=0. 488, P&lt;0. 001), be aware of the relationship with parents(β=0. 201, P=0. 001), the power of the psychological resilience(β=0. 046, P&lt;0. 001) and the optimism of the psychological resilience(β=-0. 030, P=0. 038), self-esteem(β=-0. 140, P&lt;0. 001). The depression symptoms of adolescents are related to many factors. The self-conscious teachers and classmates do not like himself(herself), and the bad relationship with parents are positively related to the depression symptoms of adolescents, while the psychological resilience and self-esteem are negatively related. The multi-level Model of repeated measurement is suitable for the analysis of the influencing factors and their changing rules in the longitudinal study of depression symptoms.

Perception of risks to the use of agrochemicals by high school students in rural areas in the District of Lucialva, Jauru - MT

The present research had as objective to investigate the perceptions of high school students regarding their knowledge as well as the use of pesticides. The investigation was carried out by means of a questionnaire to 83 high school students from the Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira State School in the district of Lucialva, in the municipality of Jauru-Mato Grosso, addressing issues related to pesticides as well as the frequency of use of these products, the use of personal protective equipment, knowledge about the harmful effects of agrotoxic use on the environment, human health and the evils of this product, and the need to work on the agrotoxic theme in the classroom. The analysis of the results showed that the interviewed students mostly have contact with agrotoxicos, little knowledge about the information and the handling of these products as well as the inappropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment being critical the risk of intoxication by the agrotoxicos. Therefore, it is necessary to work on this theme at school and in the community in order to raise awareness and raise awareness among families about the harmfulness and the risks of poisoning with pesticides.

The Analysis of Mathematics Adversity Quotient of Left Behind Junior High School Students in Rural Areas

As a non-intellectual factor, Mathematics Adversity Quotient plays a crucial role in students’ learning of mathematics. This study adopts the modified mathematics adversity quotient table measuring left-behind and non-left-behind students’ Adversity Quotient in Chetian Minority Junior High School in Ziyuan, Guilin, Guangxi. It is found that the mathematics Adversity Quotient of non-left-behind junior high school students is generally higher than that of left-behind students, so there is a significant difference between them. Based on this situation, questionnaire survey and in-depth interview are adopted to explore the factors affecting the Adversity Quotient of left-behind junior high school students. Finally, it is concluded that home-school communication, teachers’ and parents’ care in school education have a significant influence on student’s Mathematics Adversity Quotient.

ABSTRACTBackground: The prevalence and incidence of Pediculosis capitis in children is quite high in many countries of the world. Pediculosis capitis usually affects children aged 5 - 13 years. In Yogyakarta in 2011 the prevalence of pediculosis capitis infestation rate was 19.6% for elementary school students in rural areas and 12.3% in elementary school students in urbanareas. The incidence is far below the real number because of the number of patients who treat themselves and do not report to the health workers. Prevalence is definitely not known, this is because Pediculosis capitis is not a disease that must be reported while people consider it just a nuisance is not reported. Pediculosis capitis needs attention because it often attacks children. Objective: To see the relationship between Personal hygiene and Pediculosis capitis incidents, to know the incidence of Pediculosis capitis and to know personal hygiene School Children In Kloposawit, Turi, Sleman, Yogyakarta Method: The study used cross sectional design with population of all students of grade 1 to class VI. The sample was 43 respondents. The data were collected by giving questionnaires to the research respondents. Data processing using Chi Square test with 95% confidence level and α = 0,05. Result: Based on bivariate analysis, there is no correlation between personal hygiene with incidence of Pediculosis capitis School Children in Kloposawit, Turi, Sleman (P = 0,331), incidence Pediculosis capitis School Childre in Kloposawit 32,6% positive respondents Pediculosis capitis and 67,4% % of respondents negative pediculosis capitis. Personal hygienerespondents 53,5% good and 46,5% personal hygiene less. Conclusion: There is no relationship between personal hygiene and the incidence of Pediculosis capitis. Most of the respondents (67.4%) negative pediculosis capitis and respondents have good personal hygiene.

Parents' Investments in the Quality of Education: The Case of Ghana

While school enrollment at the primary level has been rising in developing countries rapidly, international measures of education quality, especially in basic knowledge of reading and math, do not exhibit a parallel improvement. Since parents' expenditure is an important determinant of children's school performance, we investigate parents' investments in the quality of the child's education, measured by their spending on books and other school materials. We develop an overlapping generations model, in which we consider families' expenditure as an input to their children's human capital. Moreover, in our model parents will use the current status of their children's human capital as a screening measure for adjusting their investment, instead of the standard tradition of simply balancing the trade-off between future income and the current stream of direct and indirect school costs. Using our theoretical analysis, our main hypothesis is that families consider better school performance to be a reliable predictor of future return, and this will incentivize them to invest more, considering other determinants of children's schooling output, school quality for example. Empirically, we use an instrumental variables approach to test our main hypothesis, and it is accepted using data for Ghanaian primary school students in rural areas.

Preliminary assessment of the computer-based Taenia solium educational program 'The Vicious Worm' on knowledge uptake in primary school students in rural areas in eastern Zambia.

ObjectiveThe zoonotic helminth Taenia solium is endemic in Zambia, causing human (taeniasis and (neuro)cysticercosis) and pig (porcine cysticercosis) diseases with high health, social and economic burdens. We aimed to evaluate the impact of a health educational program intended to lead to powerful and cumulative improvements in knowledge, attitudes and practices that decrease parasite transmission and disease occurrence.MethodsHalf‐day health education workshops were conducted in three primary schools in the highly endemic Eastern Province of Zambia, using the computer‐based T. solium educational program ‘The Vicious Worm’. Questionnaires were administered before and after the educational component to determine the program's impact on knowledge uptake in primary school students.ResultsIn total, 99 students participated: 38 males and 61 females, with a median age of 14 years (range 10–18 years). Baseline general knowledge of T. solium, including awareness of the different human and pig disease states, and disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention, was quite high (average score 62%) and consistent across all three study areas. Participants’ knowledge had significantly increased after the educational component, particularly regarding parasite transmission and disease prevention.ConclusionPreliminary assessment of ‘The Vicious Worm’ indicates it is an effective tool for the short‐term T. solium education of primary school students in Zambia. Follow‐up studies are planned to assess the longer term impact of the program on knowledge uptake in the study neighbourhoods. Inclusion of tailored ‘The Vicious Worm’ educational workshops should be considered in integrated cysticercosis control programs in endemic areas of sub‐Saharan Africa.

Cultivating conceptual understanding in public secondary school students in rural areas of Pakistan

The article deals with the proceedings of a Science Excel Camp conducted in Quetta, Pakistan, organized by Ed-Links and funded by USAID under the AIR programme 2007–2012, for students of public schools in rural areas, belonging predominantly to marginalized communities. The camp was conducted by CPE (Centre of Physics Education) Karachi in October 2009. A Power Point presentation was made to the physics community for the first time in RICWP, held in Islamabad, Pakistan, from 25–27 April, 2016, entitled “Cultivating conceptual understanding”.

Effect of ‘SMART health education model’ on knowledge and attitudes of school students in rural area about ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan of India’ and sanitation practices

Background: India has been facing various sanitation problems like open defecation, insanitary toilets, improper waste disposal, manual scavenging etc. Poor sanitation in schools, particularly rural schools are health hazards and affects school attendance, retention and educational performance. Several studies reported poor knowledge about sanitation practices among school students in India, so there is need to inculcate good sanitation practices among them. ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ is national level health campaign of India which was launched on 2nd October 2014. The present study was first study to create awareness among school students about ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ as well as sanitation practices through ‘SMART Health Education Model’.Methods: An interventional study was conducted in one of the randomly selected public schools in rural field practice area of Bharati Vidyapeeth University Medical College, Pune. The study participants were 100 students belonging to 5th and 6th class and they were exposed to structured ‘SMART Health Education Model’. Entire data from pre and post intervention questionnaire was entered into ‘Microsoft Office Excel Sheet’ and analysed by using ‘Paired t test’.Results: Significant improvement in knowledge about sanitation practices was found after applying ‘SMART Model’ (Pre-test mean marks: 4.17, post-test mean marks: 9.52, t = 24.31, p&lt;0.001). The study reported favourable attitudes of participants towards ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’.Conclusions: It indicates that even a simple intervention like ‘SMART Model’ can make significant change in knowledge of school students about personal and environmental hygiene.

Nowadays, the number of school students in rural area has decreased significantly. For this reason, there are mixed classes among students of different grades in schools in rural area. Moreover, there are several teachers who teach two and more subjects except for the major of teacher so educational environment has been deteriorated. To tackle this problem, the ministry of education has suggested merging small schools in rural area. However, some people believe that merging small schools would make educational environment more worse and would not solve this problem. To solve this problem, this research suggests that the proper solution for educational environment of merging small schools through surveying environment of merging schools.

Today, the problems of adolescent especially in smoking preference in Indonesia is very alarming. This study was conducted to analyze the influence of fathering on smoking behavior of junior high school students in rural area of Bogor. The design of this research was cross sectional study and used survey method. This study involved 60 students of seventh and eighth grades in two junior high schools in the Pamijahan Sub District, Bogor District, West Java Province that were selected by proportional random sampling. Data collection was conducted by self-administered and analyzed by independent samples t-test, Pearson’s correlation test, Chi-Square test, and logistic regression test. Fathering was measured base on parenting styles and modelling. Parenting style (authoritarian and permissive) correlated significantly with smoking behavior of students, whereas modelling didn’t correlate between male and female student. Age of student, sex of student, and father’s parenting style (authoritative and permissive) correlated significantly with student’s smoking behavior. Smoking behavior of students was influenced by length of father’s education and parenting styles (authoritative and permissive). Increasing of father’s education and using authoritative parenting style can decrease risk of student’s smoking behavior, while the permissive parenting style of father can increase risk of student’s smoking behavior.
