Literature Review: Pemanfaatan Instrumentasi Tes Minat terhadap Layanan Bimbingan dan Konseling

Interest and aptitude tests help in recognizing children's potential early on, so that parents and educators can plan education that is more suitable and supports the optimal development of children's potential. The purpose of this study is to help individuals know that interest and aptitude test instrumentation has a major impact in directing individuals in developing themselves, both in academics and careers. Children who study and work according to their interests tend to be more motivated, happy and accomplished. With a clear understanding of interests and aptitudes, children can make better decisions regarding future education, major and career choices. In this study we used the Literature Review method by collecting several sources. The results and discussion of the literature review discussion regarding interest tests, interest inventories, and Android-based psychological test applications in guidance and counseling in schools show that these tools are very important to help students determine educational and career paths according to their interests and talents. Interest tests help reduce uncertainty in career decision-making, improve the fit between individuals and jobs or study programs, and expand understanding of the psychological tendencies underlying their choices.

ACADEMIC BURNOUT CONDITIONS IN INDONESIAN STUDENTS: PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND EMOTIONAL

The unclear end of the Covid-19 pandemic has had an impact on learning in schools. Students as an affected community cause the online learning process with various limitations, even though students have begun to get used to online learning. Conditions related to online learning pose a new problem about academic burnout. This study aims to develop an academic burnout scale and describe the condition of student academic burnout. The research method uses a mix-method with academic burnout variables and the target is students. The results found three aspects of academic burnout from physical fatigue, mental exhaustion, and emotional exhaustion. The burnout scale is validly tested with reliability in the very high category. The measurement of student academic burnout found that the average student has a high burnout category as a result of online learning. The effects of burnout conditions are self-confidence, motivation, achievement, self-control or depression in students. Immediate intervention for the prevention, reduction, or alleviation of burnout by school counselors or in collaboration with psychologists or universities.

New Guidelines for School Counselors in their Fight Against Cyberbullying Prevention in Schools

In recent decades, cyberbullying, also known as “online bullying” or “electronic violence”, has developed as a serious social problem for society, and more specifically for the school, as a microcosm of society. Amongst all school personnel, it is the school counselor who has the highest responsibility in helping students develop all the necessary skills to avoid this relatively new form of bullying, or at worst, to cope with it. However, finding the right way to do this is not always easy, which explains the inaction on the part of adults at school and the resulting reluctance of students to seek help. The purpose of the article is to fill this gap by highlighting the existing misconceptions and intervention efforts that prevent school counselors from effectively dealing with the problem and, accordingly, to propose a new philosophy with fresh approaches and guidelines that facilitate their fight against cyberbullying.

Prevalence and correlates of depression, anxiety, and stress among adolescents in urban and rural areas of Mysuru, South India.

Adolescence, a volatile period of growth between the ages of 10 and 19, is associated with increased vulnerability to mental health problems. Factors such as academic pressure can contribute to these challenges. The current study aimed to evaluate the factors and prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress among adolescents in the urban and rural areas of Mysuru district. A cross-sectional study was conducted in private high schools in both urban and rural regions. Prior permission and informed consent were obtained from participants and their legal guardians aged 18 years and older. The gender distribution in urban areas was 60.2% female and 39.8% male, while in rural areas, it was 51% male and 49% female. The prevalence of depression was higher in rural (39.3%) than in urban areas (24.2%), while anxiety was more prevalent in urban (50.6%) than in rural areas (49%). Stress was also more common in rural (16.6%) than urban adolescents (14.6%). Factors significantly associated with mental health outcomes included monthly family income, parenting practices, academic pressures, and self-esteem. Key needs identified were mobile mental health applications, online counseling services, and access to school counselors. This study provides insights into the prevalence and correlates of common mental health issues among adolescents in this region of South India. The findings emphasize the necessity of providing mobile applications and offline counseling services to effectively support and meet the needs of adolescents in these settings.

Islamic boarding school counseling guidance is a form of implementing services provided to help students or santri to develop into individuals who are independent, responsible, creative, productive and behave honestly through character strengthening education. The values that exist in character education are included in Islamic boarding schools' guidance and counseling services. The role of Islamic boarding school counseling is to instill the habit of practicing Islamic teachings in students or santri in daily life through the practice of worship. With program material covering faith, morals and worship. Forming character cannot be done in an instant by giving advice, orders, or instructions, but with the role of the Islamic boarding school guidance and counseling program. The formation of character requires an example, patience, habituation, and repetition. Thus, the process of education and character strengthening will be experienced by students or santri as a form of personality or self-character experience. The values of religious and moral life will strengthen the character of cooperation, time discipline, courage, and confidence in daily activities and learning processes. This is a step to gain knowledge and be able to apply knowledge in the form of skills work and as a positive attitude. From the results of this study, several important things were obtained regarding the role of Islamic boarding schools as a character strengthening program in madrasas. First, helping students or santri in dealing with the problems of everyday life. Second, giving motivation to students or students and teachers in order to build a spirit of enthusiasm for service. Third, implementing the results of coaching as a character education agenda. Meanwhile, based on the role played by a guidance and counseling teacher, namely the planning of Islamic boarding school guidance and counseling services, the implementation of Islamic boarding school guidance and counseling services, and the evaluation of Islamic boarding school guidance and counseling reports. services carried out with Islamic boarding school counseling to students or santri can form a spiritual and emotional soul with moral development as character strengthening.

School Psychological Counselors' Opinions about Colleague Solidarity Group Process: A Qualitative

This study aimed to examine the opinions of school psychological counselors regarding the colleague solidarity group process carried out by Amasya Guidance and Research Center. The study group of this qualitative research study consists of 19 school psychological counselors working at various educational levels in Amasya province. The study group was selected by purposeful sampling method. A personal information form prepared for school psychological counselors and a semi-structured interview form consisting of 5 open-ended questions were used to collect data. Content analysis method was used to analyze the data. As a result, 4 themes and 10 sub-themes were obtained. Research results showed that the collegiate group process had positive personal and professional effects on school counselors. At the end of this process, it was observed that the participants developed different ways of coping with the challenging cases they encountered or may encounter in their professional lives. In addition, it was observed that they frequently shared their feelings and experiences while working with these challenging cases with their colleagues. In this context, peer solidarity groups are thought to be an effective and functional method that can be used to cope with the problems in the professional lives of school psychological counselors.

The Degree of Bullying against Adolescent Students with Disabilities Integrated into Regular Schools from the Point of View of Educational Counselors

The study aimed at identifying the degree of bullying against adolescent students with disabilities integrated into regular schools from the point of view of educational counselors. To achieve the objectives of the study, the descriptive analytical model was followed. The sample of the study consisted of (30) educational counselors working in the schools of Mafraq Governorate. The bullying behavior scale for adolescent students with disabilities was used. The results of the study showed that the level of bullying for adolescent students with disabilities integrated in regular schools was moderate. The results of the study also showed that there were statistically significant differences due to the gender variable in favor of males. The study recommended a number of recommendations, including creating awareness programs directed at students and their families about the importance of accepting students with disabilities integrated into regular schools and not directing violence or offence to them.

A Paradigm Model of School Counseling Services based on Grounded Theory

Aim: The purpose of this research is to provide a model of school counseling services based on the conditions and implications of the grounded theory to help school counselors use appropriate services for the integrated development of students. Methods: The research method was a qualitative research that was conducted using the grounded theory approach. Semi-structured interviews and the translation of authentic school counseling documents were used in this study to collect data. Eight professional school counselors with doctoral degrees in counseling, who worked in schools as a school counselor for more than 10 years, and many of whom teach at universities, participated in this study.Results: The findings of this research are based on the field of grounded theory, including concepts of the factors and consequences of school counseling services. These concepts include: developmental needs of students, professional competence of school counselors, necessity of family awareness, cultural context, family lifestyle, education policy, entrance exam phenomenon, psychiatrists and drug prescription, therapeutic attitude instead of preventive attitude, non-governmental institutions and schools, student standards, and counselor standards. Conclusions: The findings of the research showed that the provision of school counseling services should be based on the developmental needs of students, the cultural context and lifestyle of families should be considered, school counselors should have the necessary standards to provide services, and finally, direct and indirect counseling services. The school should be provided in a specialized manner and in a regular framework to facilitate the integrated growth of students.

Meaning in Life As a Predictor of Personal Growth Initiative and Emotional Intelligence for Adolescents

ABSTRACT Meaning in life is the process in which individuals make sense of their lived experiences and the world around them. In adolescence, youth face developmental challenges and stressors that can threaten their well-being. Knowledge of the mechanisms and contributors to protective factors, such as meaning in life, can enhance counselors’ and school counselors’ delivery of services to adolescents and support their optimal growth. In this study, we conducted multiple regression analyses to examine the relationship between participants’ meaning in life, emotional intelligence, and personal growth initiative in a youth sample (n = 203). Our findings indicated that meaning in life was related to students’ personal growth initiative and emotional intelligence. Specifically, we identified that meaning in life predicted personal growth initiative and emotional intelligence for participants in this study. Based on our findings, we offer practical implications for school counselors and counselors working with youth. Implications for research are also provided.

The need for structured career guidance in a resource-constrained South African school

Background: Career guidance and counselling in secondary schools are crucial for young adolescents as they embark on the initial stages of shaping their post-school studies and career goals. Initiating career guidance as early as Grade 9 is imperative to ensure alignment between chosen subjects and future career aspirations. The study was conducted with Grade 12 learners at a resource-constrained high school in Cape Town, Western Cape.Objectives: Utilising the Systems Theory Framework (STF), we sought to explore Grade 12 learners’ perceptions of the effectiveness of career guidance and counselling and its significance in shaping future career choices.Method: The study used a qualitative methodology. Semi-structured online interviews were used to gather the data, which were then analysed thematically. The study consisted of a sample size of 16 Grade 12 participants.Results: The findings indicated that learners found career guidance and counselling effective for deciding future occupations, with a preference for opportunities such as job shadowing and interactions with experts in the field of interest. However, limited access to vocational resources and a lack of structured classroom guidance led learners to conduct their own research.Conclusion: The study recommends that life orientation teachers actively engage with organisations and relevant stakeholders in providing career guidance and counselling to learners and ensure that pupils have sufficient access to career resources for effective career guidance.Contribution: These findings are a valuable resource for professionals and policymakers seeking to improve high school learners’ educational experiences, providing a framework for future scholars delving into the dynamic field of career counselling.

Prevention of School Attendance Problems in Japan: A Macro-Level Perspective on Avoidance Behaviour

In this study, we examined government policies and the relevant law on prevention measures for school attendance problems in Japanese compulsory education schools from the perspective of school avoidance behaviour. In summary: (a) the number of students with school attendance problems has been increasing rapidly since 2017; (b) despite an increase in school counsellors as a government-initiated prevention measure, the number of students with school attendance problems has risen; (c) government policies and the relevant law seek to foster social independence even for students unable to return to school and to provide spaces where students with school attendance problems feel comfortable, which may inadvertently reinforce or perpetuate school avoidance behaviour; and (d) in the Japanese compulsory education system, stakeholders have limited opportunities to block school avoidance behaviour. We propose two measures to prevent school attendance problems drawing on a macro-level behavioural perspective: (a) employing data on class absences in mainstream schools, regardless of the reason for the absence, as an evaluation criterion for prolonged school absenteeism, and (b) implementing appropriate grade repetition for students who miss classes in their mainstream school over a certain threshold, including withholding the school diploma.

A Study on Causes of Gender Gap in Construction Management: High School Students’ Knowledge and Perceptions across Genders

This paper addresses three research questions: (1) According to the pertinent literature, what are the main causes of the current gender gap in the construction industry, particularly for management and leadership roles? (2) Is there a significant difference between male and female high-school-age students regarding their level of knowledge of the construction industry? (3) Is there a significant difference between male and female high-school-age students in their perception of the construction industry and factors impacting their career choice? These research questions are addressed by a review of the literature followed by a discussion of precamp survey results from two consecutive years of a two-week high school summer camp, which is focused on construction science and management. The literature review reveals that the issues are deep-routed and complex but can in general be categorized into two groups: the recruitment and retention of women in construction management and related careers. While the literature review summary in this paper addresses both categories, the focus of the paper remains recruitment, particularly through a study of high school students’ level of knowledge and perceptions of construction management. The pre-camp surveys assessed the participants’ baseline knowledge and perceptions of construction management as a career. The results showed that the knowledge of construction management as a career is very low, with no statistically significant difference between genders. It must be noted here that the participants are biased positively toward the construction management and related careers, as they chose to attend the camp for a variety of reasons, from wanting an experience on the campus of this university to parents’ encouragement. Despite this baseline interest, however, the data show that the participants lacked clarity on what this career really entails. It is suggested, therefore that the general knowledge of this career path across larger and more randomized samples across U.S. will be even lower. The perceptions of the construction industry differed slightly between genders, with females perceiving it as more physically challenging and prioritizing family friendliness when considering career options. In conclusion, both the literature review and the survey data analysis show that the lack of knowledge of this career path, exacerbated by the negative perceptions of the construction industry, contribute to the problem of women not choosing to study construction management. The construction industry continues to make significant improvements in their diversity and inclusion efforts, and there are a variety of paths within the industry for graduates of construction science and management degrees. As such, significant work remains for both the industry and academia to overcome the lack of knowledge and negative perceptions of the industry through increased outreach to better inform high school students, parents, and counselors.

APPLICATION OF INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING WITH COGNITIVE DEFUSION TECHNIQUES TO OVERCOME FEELINGS OF INSECURITY IN ADOLESCENT VICTIMS OF BULLYING

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of individual counseling using cognitive defusion techniques in reducing feelings of insecurity among bullied adolescents. Cognitive defusion, a component of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), helps individuals change their response to negative thoughts. The research method used is quantitative with a quasi-experimental design, where 60 bullied adolescents were randomly divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group received individual counseling sessions with cognitive defusion techniques for eight weeks, while the control group did not receive any intervention. Data on the level of insecurity were collected using the Insecure Feelings Scale (IFS) before and after the intervention. The results showed that the experimental group experienced a significant decrease in feelings of insecurity, with the average IFS score decreasing by 40% from 75 to 45. In contrast, the control group did not show significant changes in the IFS scores. Paired and unpaired t-tests indicated that this decrease was statistically significant (p < 0.001). These findings suggest that cognitive defusion techniques are effective in reducing feelings of insecurity among bullied adolescents. The practical implications of these findings are the importance of integrating cognitive defusion techniques into school counseling programs to help adolescents cope with the psychological impacts of bullying. Recommendations for future research include using a more rigorous research design with full randomization and exploring the long-term effects of this intervention in various cultural and geographical contexts.

School counselors' burnout, hope, and self‐efficacy: A sequential regression analysis

AbstractSchool counselors serve as frontline mental health professionals in schools. Although school counselors have a meaningful impact on students and the school climate, burnout negatively impacts school counselors’ self‐efficacy. Hope may serve as a protective resource for school counselors’ self‐efficacy. We conducted a sequential regression among 102 school counselors to determine if burnout and hope predicted their self‐efficacy. While burnout predicted school counselors’ self‐efficacy, hope contained the largest single explanative influence on self‐efficacy scores. In this study, we provide evidence to support hope as a statistically significant and substantial protective factor for enhancing school counselor self‐efficacy. We provide implications for school counseling practice, training, and research.

Percentage of Pancasila student profile dimensions in the Merdeka curriculum and the implications for high school guidance and counseling programs

The Merdeka curriculum is an improvement on the previous curriculum, namely the 2013 curriculum, whose implementation was based on the implementation of the Pancasila student profile. The aim of this research is to compare the six dimensions of the Pancasila student profile in order to assist counselors in developing guidance and counseling service programs. This research uses a survey method. The research subjects were 90 students in class X at a private Catholic high school in Malang. The results of data analysis in this study found that the percentage of the dimensions of faith, devotion to God Almighty, and having noble morals was 80.56%, the global diversity dimension was 72.83%, the mutual cooperation dimension was 81.61%, the independent dimension was 83.78%, the critical reasoning was obtained at 81.50%, and the creative dimension was obtained at 77.67%. The findings of this study can be utilized as a point of reference for counselors to design guidance and counseling programs in schools to enhance or maintain values that strengthen dimensions within the Pancasila student profile. This includes collaborating with subject teachers, conducting group guidance, using traditional games, art therapy, and various counseling techniques.

School alienation in online schooling scale (SAOSS): development of a measure to assess school alienation among students

ABSTRACT This study reports on developing and validating the School Alienation in Online Schooling Scale (SAOSS). School alienation in online schooling is conceptualized as opposed to school belonging and the main reason for minimal participation, reduced educational benefits, and school dropout in school aged-children, especially during the online learning forced due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. This study includes three phases. The first study included item generation and analysis. After the initial analysis, 13 items from the tool were retained. In the second study, exploratory factor analysis was conducted. Two factors emerged from principal component analysis (PCA). In the third study, we investigated the confirmatory factor analysis of SAOSS with a sample of urban students in Iran (grades 7–9, n = 317). The SAOSS has important implications for researchers, school counselors and psychologists, policymakers, and stakeholders. Implication for theory, practice and future research is discussed.

Boredom Proneness and Social Media Usage of College Students

This descriptive-predictive study aimed to determine the correlation between the social media usage of college students and their boredom proneness in a University in Davao region. A total of 350 participants were chosen to participate in this study using simple random sampling techniques. A 22-item multidimensional state boredom questionnaire and 21-item social networking usage served as an instrument wherein the Jamovi was used for data analysis. The mean and standard deviation were utilized to test the level of both variables, and results showed that the level of social media usage and boredom proneness among students is high. The Shapiro-Wilk test was utilized to test the normality; it revealed that the data is not normally distributed. The Spearman rho correlation coefficient test revealed a significant relationship between social media usage and students’ boredom proneness, with a p-value of .001, indicating a strong positive correlation. Meanwhile, the result of Linear Regression showed 71% of the variance is explained by the three significant predictors contributing to the students’ social media usage which are Time Perception, Inattention and Disengagement. The study’s findings indicate that increased use of social media is associated with higher levels of boredom. In this case, school administration, local health authorities, and school counseling and guidance offices should enhance the implementation of policies regarding the responsible use of social media, integrate the findings into various programs, and increase public awareness of the effects of excessive social media use on people’s mental health and academic performance. Lastly, researchers should consider extending this topic with a quantitative approach and investigate the possible mediating factors between boredom and social media usage.
