Low-voltage single-atom electron microscopy with carbon-based nanomaterials

The properties of materials are strongly correlated with their atomic scale structures. Achieving a comprehensive understanding of the atomic-scale structure-property relationship requires advancements of imaging and spectroscopy techniques. Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) has seen rapid development over the past decades and is now routinely employed for atomic-scale characterization. However, quantitative STEM imaging and spectroscopy analysis at the single-atom level is challenging due to the extremely weak signals generated from individual atom, thus imposing stringent requirements for analysis sensitivity. This review discusses the development and application of low-voltage STEM techniques with single-atom sensitivity, primarily based on recent research presented on an invited talk at the 5th 2D23 SALVE Symposium, including annular dark-field (ADF) imaging, functional imaging and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) analysis. Carbon-based nanomaterials were chosen as model systems for demonstrating the capabilities of single-atom STEM imaging and EELS analysis, due to their structural stability under low accelerating voltages and their rich physical and chemical properties. Moreover, this review summarizes recent advancements and applications of low-voltage single-atom STEM imaging and spectroscopy in the study of functional materials and discusses prospects for future developments.

Influence of Pristine NMC811 Secondary and Primary Particle Surfaces on the Materials Reactivity

Vehicle electrification currently relies on lithium-ion batteries using nickel, manganese and cobalt (NMC)-based lamellar oxides as positive electrode materials. In order to achieve higher energy densities, the market is now moving towards NMC with high nickel content. Nevertheless, these materials have been widely demonstrated to suffer from serious off-gassing problems that reduce cycle life and pose safety concerns. Not only gases resulting from the formation of SEI at the negative electrode, but the production of O2, CO and CO2 have also been noted by different research groups.1–3 Despite the large number of studies analyzing the material during and after cycling, we noted a lack of in-depth characterization of the surface of Nickel-rich NMCs in their initial state. The need for such information is increasingly necessary with the recent development of new technologies for surface modification such as coating to limit the instability of high Nickel content NMCs.4,5 The surface reactivity of Ni-rich layered transition metal oxides is instrumental to the performance of batteries based on these positive electrode materials. Most often, strong surface modifications are detailed with respect to a supposed ideal initial state. The study the LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811) cathode material in its pristine state, hence before any contact with electrolyte or cycling, was performed thanks to advanced microscopy and spectroscopy techniques in order to fully characterize its surface down to the nanometer scale. Scanning transmission-electron microscopy-electron energy-loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS), solid state nuclear-magnetic-resonance (SS-NMR) and X-rays photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) are combined and correlated in an innovative manner.Specifically, using a high magnetic field NMR spectrometer, it was possible to evaluate the total amount of diamagnetic Li in the samples. Thanks to XPS it was then possible to identify the lithiated species present on the surface and to use such information to better deconvolve the NMR spectra. Li2O, Li2SO4 and LiOH were identified as the main contaminants on the surface of NMC in its initial state. On the other hand, the quantity of Li2CO3 initially estimated by XPS could be substantially re-evaluated using NMR (54% by XPS vs. only 1% by NMR). These two techniques, providing only partial and often imprecise information when used separately, have proven to be fundamental instruments in the analysis of surface species when used in a complementary manner.The results demonstrate that in usual storage conditions after synthesis, the extreme surface is already chemically different from nominal values. In particular, nickel is found in a reduced state compared to the bulk value and a Mn enrichment is determined in the first few nanometers of primary particles. Further exposition to humid air allows for quantifying the formed lithiated species per gram of active material, identifying their repartition and proposing a reaction path in relation with the instability of the surface. Charge Distribution across Capped and Uncapped Infinite-Layer Neodymium Nickelate Thin Films.

Charge ordering (CO) phenomena have been widely debated in strongly-correlated electron systems mainly regarding their role in high-temperature superconductivity. Here, the structural and charge distribution in NdNiO2 thin films prepared with and without capping layers, and characterized by the absence and presence of CO are elucidated. The microstructural and spectroscopic analysis is done by scanning transmission electron microscopy-electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS) and hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES). Capped samples show Ni1+ , with an out-of-plane (o-o-p) lattice parameter of around 3.30 Å indicating good stabilization of the infinite-layer structure. Bulk-sensitive HAXPES on Ni-2p shows weak satellite features indicating large charge-transfer energy. The uncapped samples evidence an increase of the o-o-p parameter up to 3.65 Å on the thin film top with a valence toward Ni2+ in this region. Here, 4D-STEM demonstrates (303)-oriented stripes which emerge from partially occupied apical oxygen. Those stripes form quasi-2D coherent domains viewed as rods in the reciprocal space with Δqz ≈ 0.24 reciprocal lattice units (r.l.u.) extension located at Q = ( ) and ( ) r.l.u. The stripes associated with oxygen re-intercalation concomitant with hole doping suggest a possible link to the previously reported CO in infinite-layer nickelate thin films.

Machine Learning-Aided Design of Gold Core-Shell Nanocatalysts toward Enhanced and Selective Photooxygenation.

We demonstrate the use of the machine learning (ML) tools to rapidly and accurately predict the electric field as a guide for designing core-shell Au-silica nanoparticles to enhance 1O2 sensitization and selectivity of organic synthesis. Based on the feature importance analysis, obtained from a deep neural network algorithm, we found a general and linear dependent descriptor (θ ∝ aD0.25t-1, where a, D, and t are the shape constant, size of metal nanoparticles, and distance from the metal surface) for the electric field around the core-shell plasmonic nanoparticle. Directed by the new descriptor, we synthesized gold-silica nanoparticles and validated their plasmonic intensity using scanning transmission electron microscopy-electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS) mapping. The nanoparticles with θ = 0.40 demonstrate an ∼3-fold increase in the reaction rate of photooxygenation of anthracene and 4% increase in the selectivity of photooxygenation of dihydroartemisinic acid (DHAA), a long-standing goal in organic synthesis. In addition, the combination of ML and experimental investigations shows the synergetic effect of plasmonic enhancement and fluorescence quenching, leading to enhancement for 1O2 generation. Our results from time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations suggest that the presence of an electric field can favor intersystem crossing (ISC) of methylene blue to enhance 1O2 generation. The strategy reported here provides a data-driven catalyst preparation method that can significantly reduce experimental cost while paving the way for designing photocatalysts for organic drug synthesis.

Atomistic Simulation Informs Interface Engineering of Nanoscale LiCoO2.

Lithium-ion batteries continue to be a critical part of the search for enhanced energy storage solutions. Understanding the stability of interfaces (surfaces and grain boundaries) is one of the most crucial aspects of cathode design to improve the capacity and cyclability of batteries. Interfacial engineering through chemical modification offers the opportunity to create metastable states in the cathodes to inhibit common degradation mechanisms. Here, we demonstrate how atomistic simulations can effectively evaluate dopant interfacial segregation trends and be an effective predictive tool for cathode design despite the intrinsic approximations. We computationally studied two surfaces, {001} and {104}, and grain boundaries, Σ3 and Σ5, of LiCoO2 to investigate the segregation potential and stabilization effect of dopants. Isovalent and aliovalent dopants (Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, Sc3+, Y3+, Gd3+, La3+, Al3+, Ti4+, Sn4+, Zr4+, V5+) were studied by replacing the Co3+ sites in all four of the constructed interfaces. The segregation energies of the dopants increased with the ionic radius of the dopant. They exhibited a linear dependence on the ionic size for divalent, trivalent, and quadrivalent dopants for surfaces and grain boundaries. The magnitude of the segregation potential also depended on the surface chemistry and grain boundary structure, showing higher segregation energies for the Σ5 grain boundary compared with the lower energy Σ3 boundary and higher for the {104} surface compared to the {001}. Lanthanum-doped nanoparticles were synthesized and imaged with scanning transmission electron microscopy-electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS) to validate the computational results, revealing the predicted lanthanum enrichment at grain boundaries and both the {001} and the {104} surfaces.

Electron Microscopy Probing Electron-Photon Interactions in SiC Nanowires with Ultrawide Energy and Momentum Match.

Light-matter interactions are commonly probed by optical spectroscopy, which, however, has some fundamental limitations such as diffraction-limited spatial resolution, tiny momentum transfer, and noncontinuous excitation/detection. In this work, through the use of scanning transmission electron microscopy-electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS) with ultrawide energy and momentum match and subnanometer spatial resolution, the longitudinal Fabry-Perot (FP) resonating modes and the transverse whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) in individual SiC nanowires are simultaneously excited and detected, which span from near-infrared (∼1.2 μm) to ultraviolet (∼0.2 μm) spectral regime, and the momentum transfer can range up to 108 cm-1. The size effects on the resonant spectra of nanowires are also revealed. This work provides an alternative technique to optical resonating spectroscopy and light-matter interactions in dielectric nanostructures, which is promising for modulating free electrons via photonic structures.

(Digital Presentation) Accelerated Degradation Mechanism of Ni-Rich Ncm Cathode Materials at High and Low Voltage Range Combined Cycling for Li-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries are widely used as power sources in electric buses, railways, ferries, and other mass transportation systems. To meet the energy needs of these infrastructure systems, it is important to realize battery control that enables high-energy operation for long periods of time. The high-capacity Ni-rich cathode material NCM811 (LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2) has attracted research interest as a candidate high-energy-density cathode material. However, NCM811 has been reported to have some degradation problems, especially when operating at potential above 4.2 V versus Li/Li+1).Furthermore, the safety of NCM811 becomes compromised with time. Therefore, understanding the aging mechanism and predicting battery aging behavior are required for effective battery control. We have found that operating NCM811 cathodes at the combination of the potential higher than 4.2 V and lower potential less than 3.6 V that accelerates aging, leading to substantial capacity loss and increased resistance. However, aging was mitigated when NCM811 batteries were operated at a higher or lower potential range. Electrochemical and chemical analyses were performed to clarify the aging mechanism. We prepared 1-Ah LTO/NCM811 pouch cells. Charge/discharge cycling tests were carried out using various state-of-charge (SOC) ranges (SOC0-100%, SOC20-100%, and SOC0-70%) at a 3C rate at 65°C. When the cell was charged at SOC100% and SOC0%, the cathode potential was set to above 4.2 V and to below 3.6 V. The capacity retention and DC resistance (DCR: SOC50%, 0.2 sec) for these cells are shown in Figure1a. The capacity retention of the cell after 1000 cycles at SOC0-100% cycling test was about 75% for the initial capacity. However, a high capacity retention of 93% was obtained at SOC20-100% cycling, despite the cell was charged at SOC100% of 1000 times. The capacity retention of SOC0-70% cycling was nearly 100%. DCR increased 2.5-times after 1000 cycles at SOC0-100% cycling, which was higher increase than that of SOC20-100% cycling and SOC0-70% cycling. To clarify the mechanism, the cathode was removed from the deteriorated pouch cells and its electrochemical properties were investigated using a three-electrode glass beaker cell. The cell was assembled using the cathode and lithium metal as a counter electrode, and a reference electrode was also prepared. The lithium-diffusion coefficient of NCM811 at the time of preparation and after 1000 cycles was measured using the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique method. In the case of a NCM811 cathode operated at SOC0-100% for 1000 cycles, there was little change for the lithium-diffusion coefficient of x < 0.8 in LixNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2, but that of x > 0.8 decreased to less than 1/10. Changes in the crystal structure of the NCM811 particle surface were analyzed by scanning transmission electron microscopy–electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS). The thickness of the surface structural change layer was calculated from the EELS spectrum. Also, the thickness and composition of surface film was analyzed by hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAX-PES). This measurement was performed at the SPring-8 synchrotron radiation facility. From the STEM-EELS analyses, in the case of SOC0-100% cycling, the surface crystal structure of NCM811 changed from the layered type to the rock-salt or spinel-layer type. The thickness of this transition layer increased by 7 nm compared from beginning. In the case of SOC0-70% cycling, the thickness increased by only 2 nm. It is expected that the cathode operated above 4.2 V at SOC0-100% cycling. From the HAX-PES analysis, the film thickness increased by 20 nm from the initial condition after SOC0-100% cycling. But, after SOC20-100% cycling and SOC0-70% cycling, the film thickness increased was suppressed than that. Based on the results of these analyses, we proposed the following model. In the first step, the structure change of NCM811 was accelerated at high potential. As the rock-salt layer disturbed lithium diffusion, the diffusional resistance increased and the capacity during discharge decreased. In the second step, when NCM811 subjected to a higher potential was discharged to a lower potential, the lithium can’t be intercalated smoothly at the surface x > 0.8 in LixNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2. As a result, the lithium near the surface reacts with electrolyte, forming a film on the NCM811 surface. As the lithium was consumed by the film-growth reaction, the cathode operating potential increased, which accelerated the first step mechanism. The combination of the first and second steps accelerated aging. But this aging can be minimized by controlling the operating voltage. Ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of 100 nm-thick CeO2-HfO2 epitaxial films

Scaling up the film thickness of HfO2-based ferroelectrics is an important factor leading to their potential application in piezoelectric devices. In this paper, we report the ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of 100 nm-thick 0.1CeO2-0.9HfO2 films, epitaxially grown on (001) indium-tin-oxide//(001)yttria-stabilized zirconia substrates. The crystal structure was investigated using x-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). These analyses revealed that the polar orthorhombic phase was stabilized, even at a thickness of 100 nm, whereas the formation of a nonpolar monoclinic phase was suppressed. In addition, the elemental mappings obtained by STEM–energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy revealed that the film was compositionally uniform across its thickness. The chemical state of Ce in the polar orthorhombic domain was investigated using STEM–electron energy loss spectroscopy, which revealed the coexistence of Ce4+ and Ce3+. In addition, pinched polarization-electric field loops were observed, and their shapes were found to remain unaltered even after 109 electric field cycles. The strain-electric field curves originating from ferroelectricity were observed before and after the electric field cycling, and the high-field observed strain, Smax/Emax, was found to be approximately 7.2 pm/V. These results demonstrate that thicker CeO2-HfO2 ferroelectric films are promising candidates for use as piezoelectric materials.

Investigation by STEM-EELS of helium density in nanobubbles formed in aged palladium tritides

3He nanobubbles created by radioactive decay of tritium in palladium tritide are investigated after several years of aging. Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy – Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy (STEM-EELS) has been used to measure helium density from the helium K-edge around 23 eV. Helium densities were found between 20 and 140 (±30) He/nm3 and the corresponding nanobubble pressures range between 0.1 and 3 (±0.2) GPa. Measuring helium density and mapping He atoms by STEM-EELS enables to differentiate bubbles from empty cavities in the palladium tritide matrix.

Investigation of the Difference in Charge/Discharge Resistance for Cathode Materials after Cycle Test Combined with STEM-EELS and XAFS Analysis

The coin cells with a lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide (LiNi0.33Co0.33Mn0.33O2) and lithium metal as a cathode and anode, respectively, were degraded by the cycle tests. Electrochemical analysis and characterization were performed on the degraded coin cells and the cathode materials taken out after decomposition. The DC resistance and AC impedance measurements showed that the difference in charge/discharge resistance increased with degradation and correlated with the resistance component derived from lithium insertion into the lattice. The multiple curve resolution (MCR) analysis using scanning transmission electron microscopy—electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS) data and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analysis revealed that cation mixing occurred at 10 nm region from the surface of cathode after cycle degradation. These analysis clarified that the cation mixing region did not expand inside even if the degradation progressed, and the degree of cation mixing on the surface increased. Based on our results, the coulomb repulsion to Li+ and the reduction of the oxygen interlayer distance by the transition metal transferred into the Li layer were presumed to be predominant factors of an increase in the difference in the resistance between charge and discharge process.

Cross‐sectional structural characterization of the surface of exfoliated HOPG using HRTEM‐EELS

We analyzed the surface atomic structure of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) substrate exfoliated with adhesive tape, using high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy‐electron energy‐loss spectroscopy (STEM‐EELS). The surface step height of the exfoliated HOPG substrate was determined using high‐angle annular dark‐field‐scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF‐STEM) images and the depth profiles of the EELS spectra of a cross‐sectioned thin foil specimen prepared via focused ion beam milling. The exfoliated surface of the HOPG substrate presented disordered and curved graphene layers. The STEM‐EELS measurements indicated that upon exfoliation, the surface of the HOPG substrate reacted with atmospheric water and oxygen molecules.

Nanoscale light element identification using machine learning aided STEM-EDS

Light element identification is necessary in materials research to obtain detailed insight into various material properties. However, reported techniques, such as scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM)-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) have inadequate detection limits, which impairs identification. In this study, we achieved light element identification with nanoscale spatial resolution in a multi-component metal alloy through unsupervised machine learning algorithms of singular value decomposition (SVD) and independent component analysis (ICA). Improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the STEM-EDS spectrum images was achieved by combining SVD and ICA, leading to the identification of a nanoscale N-depleted region that was not observed in as-measured STEM-EDS. Additionally, the formation of the nanoscale N-depleted region was validated using STEM–electron energy loss spectroscopy and multicomponent diffusional transformation simulation. The enhancement of SNR in STEM-EDS spectrum images by machine learning algorithms can provide an efficient, economical chemical analysis method to identify light elements at the nanoscale.

Fast reconstruction of atomic-scale STEM-EELS images from sparse sampling

This paper discusses the reconstruction of partially sampled spectrum-images to accelerate the acquisition in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The problem of image reconstruction has been widely considered in the literature for many imaging modalities, but only a few attempts handled 3D data such as spectral images acquired by STEM electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Besides, among the methods proposed in the microscopy literature, some are fast but inaccurate while others provide accurate reconstruction but at the price of a high computation burden. Thus none of the proposed reconstruction methods fulfills our expectations in terms of accuracy and computation complexity. In this paper, we propose a fast and accurate reconstruction method suited for atomic-scale EELS. This method is compared to popular solutions such as beta process factor analysis (BPFA) which is used for the first time on STEM-EELS images. Experiments based on real as synthetic data will be conducted.

Spectrally tunable infrared plasmonic F,Sn:In2O3 nanocrystal cubes.

A synthetic challenge in faceted metal oxide nanocrystals (NCs) is realizing tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) near-field response in the infrared (IR). Cube-shaped nanoparticles of noble metals exhibit LSPR spectral tunability limited to visible spectral range. Here, we describe the colloidal synthesis of fluorine, tin codoped indium oxide (F,Sn:In2O3) NC cubes with tunable IR range LSPR for around 10 nm particle sizes. Free carrier concentration is tuned through controlled Sn dopant incorporation, where Sn is an aliovalent n-type dopant in the In2O3 lattice. F shapes the NC morphology into cubes by functioning as a surfactant on the {100} crystallographic facets. Cube shaped F,Sn:In2O3 NCs exhibit narrow, shape-dependent multimodal LSPR due to corner, edge, and face centered modes. Monolayer NC arrays are fabricated through a liquid-air interface assembly, further demonstrating tunable LSPR response as NC film nanocavities that can heighten near-field enhancement (NFE). The tunable F,Sn:In2O3 NC near-field is coupled with PbS quantum dots, via the Purcell effect. The detuning frequency between the nanocavity and exciton is varied, resulting in IR near-field dependent enhanced exciton lifetime decay. LSPR near-field tunability is directly visualized through IR range scanning transmission electron microscopy-electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS). STEM-EELS mapping of the spatially confined near-field in the F,Sn:In2O3 NC array interparticle gap demonstrates elevated NFE tunability in the arrays.

Role of Nitrogen in Defect Evolution in Zinc Oxide: STEM-EELS Nanoscale Investigations.

Direct evidence of the formation of nitrogen molecules (N2) after ion implantion of ZnO has been revealed by an atomically resolved scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM)-electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) investigation. Taking advantage of the possibility of using multiple detectors simultaneously in aberration-corrected STEM, we utilize the detailed correlation between the atomic structure and chemical identification to develop a model explaining the formation and evolution of different defect types and their interaction with N. In particular, the formation of zinc vacancy (VZn) clusters filled with N2 after heat treatment at 650 °C was observed, clearly indicating that N has not been stabilized in the O substitution site, thus limiting p-type doping. Previous results showing an exceptional thermal stability of vacancy clusters only for the case of N-doped ZnO are supported. Furthermore, VZn-N2 stabilization leads to suppression of VZn-Zni recombination; hence, the highly mobile Zn interstitials preferentially condense on the basal planes promoting formation of extended defects (basal stacking faults and stacking mismatched boundaries). The terminations of these defects provide energetically favorable sites for further N2 trapping as a way to reduce local strain fields.

A further investigation of the complex M3 murataite structure using Hf substitution and STEM-EELS techniques.

Many members of the complex crystalline fluorite supercell structures (e.g. zirconolite, pyrochlore and murataite polytypes) have been considered/studied for possible long-term radioactive-waste immobilization. The eight-coordinated sites in these crystals are of particular importance because they are preferred for the accommodation of trivalent rare earths and actinides present in radioactive waste from fuel element processing. The fluorite-type supercell structures include the murataites, M3, M5, M7, M8, having those numbers of repeating fluorite sub-cell units. One simple technique, as shown here, namely the substitution of Hf into the Zr site, is very helpful for structural analysis in these very complex cases in order to further illuminate the site preference of the Zr ion. Three M3 murataite samples, Ca-Mn-Ti-Zr-Al-Fe-O (regular M3), Ca-Ti-Zr-Al-Fe-O (Mn-free M3) and Ca-Mn-Ti-Hf-Al-Fe-O (Hf-substituted M3) are investigated and, through techniques described for larger cells, show that the Zr is very likely not to be hosted in the [6]Ti site in the M3 murataite structure, as suggested by Pakhomova et al. [(2013), Z. Kristallogr. Cryst. Mater. 228, 151-156], but more likely replaces the [8]Ca1 site and less likely the [8]Ca2 site. This adjusted site preference for each cation from the powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and scanning transmission electron microscopy electron energy-loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS) methods, agrees well with the high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) image.

Structural analysis of the initial lithiation of NiO thin film electrodes.

Observations of the initial lithiation of NiO electrodes demonstrate how to seed conversion reactions using interfaces in a thin film Ni/NiO bilayer architecture. Operando X-ray reflectivity (XRR) reveals that structural changes in a NiO film begin at potentials near the theoretical reduction potential (1.8-2.0 V) with detectable lithiation of both the buried Ni/NiO interface and the outer NiO surface that occur prior to the reaction of the NiO film. This initial conversion reaction is most pronounced in ultrathin NiO films (∼20 Å) with only small changes to the NiO film surface for thicker films (∼67 Å). The limited reactivity of thicker NiO films probed using operando grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) shows the growth of nanoparticles at the electrode/electrolyte interface during initial lithium ion insertion, with a 16-20 Å average radius. Ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), and scanning transmission electron microscopy/electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM/EELS) confirm our conclusions about the morphological changes accompanying initial stage of lithiation in these conversion reaction electrodes. The present study reveals the interconnected challenges of solid-solid transitions, overpotentials, interfacial nucleation and kinetics, and transition metal dissolution in conversion-type electrodes that are critical for their use as electrodes in lithium-ion batteries.

Structural hierarchy of nanocarbon in copper covetics

We prepared 0.4 wt. % carbon infused copper (i.e., copper covetic, CuCv) by electron-beam melting and deposited ≈18 nm-thick films of the CuCv on a substrate by electron-beam evaporation. Helium ion microscopy (HIM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) were used to study the characteristics of the carbon nanostructure in the CuCv bulk and thin films. HIM observation of the fracture and ion-polished surface of bulk CuCv revealed ripple structures that are associated with carbon nanoribbons formed in the copper matrix. STEM high angle annular dark field imaging and energy dispersive spectroscopy mapping indicated that carbon nanoparticles and carbon-rich pathways are interconnected to form a carbon-rich network in the CuCv films. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and STEM electron energy loss spectroscopy suggest that the carbon nanoparticles are composed of highly distorted graphenic carbon sheets that are bonded to the copper matrix and likely provide means for superior electrical and thermal conduction. Understanding the Formation of the Truncated Morphology of High-Voltage Spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 via Direct Atomic-Level Structural Observations

High-voltage spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode materials typically exhibit a perfect octahedral morphology; i.e., only the {111} planes are observed. However, a truncated octahedral morphology is sometimes observed with the appearance of both the {100} planes and the {111} planes. The underlying mechanism of this morphological transformation is unclear. CS corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) techniques were used to study LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 samples lifted by a focused ion beam (FIB) to determine the atomic-level crystal and electronic structures of the octahedral and truncated octahedral morphologies. STEM images directly show that the appearance of the {100} planes in the truncated octahedral particles of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 is closely associated with the atomic-level migration of Ni and Mn ions in the surface region.
