Soft Skills for Private basic Education Schools in Thailand

This research study was aimed to evaluate the soft skills for teachers in Thailand working in private Basic Education schools in Samut Prakan province and to investigate the developing methods of soft skills for inexperience teachers. The 116 participants were selected by way of simple random sampling accordingly. Questionnaire was also utilized to survey the current situation and the need for developing soft skills for new teachers in seven aspects which were: 1) Communication skills 2) Thinking skills and problem solving skills 3) Teamwork force 4) Life-long learning, and information management 5) Innovation development 6) Ethics and professionalism 7) Leadership skills. When considering result, the specific components of soft skills, it was found that the innovation development was the skill that showed the least behavioral level. The self-evaluation shows that inexperienced teachers in private Basic Education schools in Samut Prakan, Thailand have established Teamwork force skill, Ethics and professionalism and Leadership skill in the workplace. On the other hand, Innovation, Communication and Thinking and Problem solving skills were lacking the most. From the study, it identifies that three most sought after soft skills attribute in new teachers are Ethics and professionalism, Teamwork force and Thinking and problem solving skills.

Depression in patients with type II diabetes: case study at diabetic outpatient clinic, in Samut Prakan.

This descriptive research studied the depression level of patients with diabetes type II at diabetic clinics in Samut Prakarn, and, identified the causes of severe depression in patients with type 2. There were 209 participants enrolled in the study. The samples were selected by opportunistic sampling technique. The data were collected from May 2013 to July 2013, using the CES-D questionnaire, with Cronbach’s coefficient alpha 0.82 and guidelines for interviews. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. Research Results: 1. 66 percent of participants had a depression score at a low level. 2. The CES-D showed that, 44 percent were unhappy and 38 percent did not feel that their life was enjoyable. 29 percent felt no hope for the future, 5.6 percent were easily upset and 8.3 percent suffered from insomnia and severe depression. 3. Half of the participants mentioned that troubled family relationships was a main cause of their depression, 42.9 percents felt worrying about their illness, 35.3 percent blamed over work and almost 15 percent identified loss of love as the cause of depression.

Assessment of Spatial Resolution in Estimating Leaf Area Index from Satellite Images: A Case Study with Avicennia Marina Plantations in Thailand

This study aims to test whether a well-established method of high resolution remote sensing can be used for estimating the mangrove leaf area index (LAI) of the Avicennia marina plantation in Thailand. The hemispherical photographs of sixty-two A. marina plantation plots in Bangpu, Samut Prakan, Thailand were used for in situ leaf area index (LAI) calculation using CAN-EYE software. The location of each plot was recorded by dual frequency GPS receiver. The geo-referenced QuickBird image was resampled to 2.5, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 meter pixel sizes, then were calculated for five Vegetation Indexes to predict LAI. Regression analysis showed a good agreement of the field LAI and models. The relationship between field LAI versus model derived from GVI, NDVI and EVI which resample to 10 meter pixel size yielding R2 =0.797, 0.796 and 0.794 respectively. The GVI model produced the lowest error when compared against the independent field data (RMSE=0.188). The results confirmed that a well-established method of high resolution remote sensing can be used for estimating the mangrove LAI of the A. marina plantation in Thailand. Additionally, the results also suggested possibility to use moderate spatial resolution satellite imagery with about 10-meter ground resolution for estimating the mangrove LAI with lower cost than the sub-meter high resolution data.

Radiological accident and incident in Thailand: lesson to be learned

Radioactive materials in Thailand have been used in medicine, research and industry for more than 50 y. Several radiological accident and incidents happened in the past 10 y. A serious one was the radiological accident that occurred in Samut Prakan, Thailand in 2000. The serious radiological accident occurred when the (60)Co head was partially dismantled, taken from that storage to sell as scrap metal. Three victims died and 10 people received high dose from the source. The lesson learned from the radiological accident in Samut Prakan was to improve in many subjects, such as efficiency in Ministerial Regulations and Atomic Energy Act, emergency response and etc. In addition to the serious accident, there are also some small incidents that occurred, such as detection of contaminated scrap metals from the re-cycling of scrap metals from steel factories. Therefore, the radiation protection infrastructure was established after the accident. Laws and regulations of radiation safety and the relevant regulatory procedures must be revised.

Detection ofCryptosporidiumoocysts in green mussels (Perna viridis) from shell-fish markets of Thailand

Mussels filter large volumes of water and can concentrate pathogenic organisms, which may act as potential vehicles of transmission to the consumer. A survey study was carried out to investigate the presence of Cryptosporidium protozoan parasites in green mussels (Perna viridis), the smussles pecies most destined for consumption in Thailand. In total, 56 samples were examined from Bangkok (n = 24) and Samut Prakan (n = 32) a wholesale shell-fish markets located at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River. The market for green mussels was closed to the mussel culture placed along the coastal line and this localization may have significant economical impact if the mussels' cultures are found contaminated. Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts were detected by the immunofluorescence antibody method (IFA) in 12.5% of the samples examined. The detection of Cryptosporidium oocysts in green mussels' population of Samut Prakan was higher (15.6%) than in Bangkok market (8.3%). These differences in positive samples from the two locations may be caused by physical, ecological and anthropogenic conditions. This could relay to different contamination levels of marine water by Cryptosporidium oocysts and consequently to contamination of harvested shellfish populations. The results demonstrate that the Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts were found indigenous in mussels from the coastal line of Thailand, indicating that mussels may act as a reservoir of Cryptosporidium foodborne infections for humans.

Impact of health educational programmes on the prevalence of enterobiasis in schoolchildren in Thailand

Enterobiasis is a worldwide prevalent disease particularly in low income areas. The budget needed for the prevention, treatment and eradication of the disease has thus far frustrated the limited budgets of global public health systems. A study was undertaken to determine if education in addition to medical treatment of enterobiasis could make a difference to the rates of infection. A total of 777 children (399 male and 378 female) from 11 elementary schools in five districts of Samut Prakan Province, Thailand were examined between December 2000 and March 2002. In five of the 11 schools studied, medical treatments were applied, followed by a programme of educating the children in the prevention of infection. Children in the remaining six schools received medical treatment only. The study showed a decrease in infections among children who received supplementary education. This decrease was significant in comparison to the decrease shown among children who received medical treatment only. The study therefore showed that educating high risk individuals played a key role in the prevention of enterobiasis.

A new species,gerres infasciatus, from the gulf of thailand (perciformes: Gerreidae)

Gerres infasciatus sp. nov. is described from the holotype and two paratypes, 125–140 mm in standard length (SL), collected off Samut Prakan, northern Gulf of Thailand. The species is similar toG. filamentosus Cuvier andG. macracanthus Bleeker in general appearance, having an elongated second dorsal fin spine, but differs from them in having 39 or 40 pored lateral line scales, the first and second soft dorsal fin ray tips yellow in fresh specimens, a narrow, faint dusky-yellowish margin on the upper membrane of the spinous dorsal fin (between 4th–9th spines), the distal part of the pelvic fin (between 1st–5th soft rays) white for 1/3–1/2 of each ray length (lost after preservation), bands absent on the body in both fresh and preserved specimens, a smaller orbit diameter (11.4–12.4% of SL), a longer second dorsal fin spine (48.0–68.9% of SL), and shorter second and third anal fin spines (10.7–11.2% and 10.4–11.3% of SL), respectively.
