Workplace innovation, employment relations and HRM: two electronics companies in South Korea

Analysing two electronics companies (unionized LG Electronics and non-union Samsung SDI) in Korea, the present paper investigates the impact of union status on workplace innovations and the effects of workplace innovations on organizational performance. Both case firms are considered highly innovative, model companies in terms of their sophisticated human resource management (HRM) and cooperative employment relations (ER). We first provide a conceptual framework and generate three propositions. The framework is composed of three main components: input, organizational system and output. The major findings include: (1) the adoption of high performance work organizations (HPWO) is highly dependent upon top management and union/employee representatives; (2) the two case firms adopted two different production modes (a team production mode in LG Electronics and a lean production mode in Samsung SDI); and (3) alignment among organizational design and work processes, ER systems and HRM systems would lead to high organizational performance. We also discuss the transferability of HPWO to other cultural settings in a universalism-contingency context.

38.2: 302-ppi High-Resolution AMOLED using Laser-Induced Thermal Imaging

Samsung SDI has developed 2.6-inch full color VGA Active Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode (AMOLED) display with the world's highest resolution of 302ppi using Laser Induced Thermal Imaging (LITI) method with the top emission structure. A voltage compensating pixel circuit with 2μm design-rule in low-temperature poly-Si (LTPS) thin film transistors (TFTs) was introduced to compensate the variation of the threshold voltage (Vth) in order to improve the image quality. Moreover, an aperture ratio of ∼40% was obtained for each pixel even though the sub-pixel pitch was 28um. The luminance for the white color was 200cd/m2 and color gamut was 74% compared to national television standard committee (NTSC) standards. These results show the possibility of high-resolution AMOLED display incorporating the LTPS technology and LITI method for digital mobile era applications in the near future.

A Case Study of Six Sigma R&D Improvement Projects: Design Optimization of Inner Shield Omega CPT

This is an R&D project on design optimization of the inner shield of the Omega colour picture tube at Samsung SDI in Korea. This was an R&D project which basically used the IDOV (Identify, Design, Optimize, Validate) process for Six Sigma implementation. Most Six Sigma projects use the process of DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control). However, this project introduces a new cycle, RDIDOV (Recognize, Define, and IDOV∥. Here CPT means Colour Picture Tube. Samsung SDI is one of the two companies which began Six Sigma in Korea. This case study shows a good exmaple how an R&D Six Sigma project can be usefully employed in manufacturing companies using a new process cycle.

Enhanced Light Extraction from Organic Light‐Emitting Diodes with 2D SiO2/SiNx Photonic Crystals

The introduction of a 2D photonic crystal layer is demonstrated to be an effective way to solve light trapping problems in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). The overall effect of the photonic crystal structure on the performance of the OLED is investigated by means of current–voltage–luminance measurements and lifetime tests. A schematic of the structure of the OLED device is shown in the Figure.

9.2: A 5.0‐in WVGA AMOLED Display for PDAs

AbstractSamsung SDI has developed a full color 5.0″ WVGA AMOLED display using top emission structure with a super fine pitch of 0.1365 mm 186 ppi, the world's highest density OLED display ever reported to date. Scan driver circuits and demux circuits were integrated within the display panel, using low temperature poly‐Si TFT CMOS technologies, and data driver circuits were mounted using COG IC. Peak luminescence was greater than 300 cd/ with power consumption of 500 mW with 30% of the pixels on.

Knowledge management and process innovation: the knowledge transformation path in Samsung SDI

Explores the connection between knowledge management (KM) and process innovation (PI). Although these are popular themes in the literature on management innovation, there is not much discussions of these issues. On the one hand, KM has been treated as a managerial fad that is mainly focused on knowledge generation, dissemination, and utilization. Moreover, the advocates of KM seem to be concerned with building knowledge management systems (KMS). On the other hand, PI is regarded as an efficiency‐oriented process redesign and re‐engineering (or BPR), which seems to be nothing to do with KM. However, the case study of Samsung SDI shows that in the real world KM is deeply linked with PI. For illustrating the KM strategy of Samsung SDI, uses the term “PI‐based KM”. Sheds light on two points: the features of process knowledge can be studied in the sense that knowledge associated with process is dubbed “process knowledge”; and socio‐cultural features of KM should be illustrated in terms of knowledge transformation path in the information space.

43.1: A New 42‐in. AC PDP Using MAoD II Driving Scheme

AbstractWe present a new prototype 42″PDP using Samsung SDI's MAoD II driving scheme (Multiple Addressing with Overlapping Display period) suited for a high‐resolution PDP. We used the commercial driver IC's to implement the entire parts of driving system and achieved the luminance of 600 cd/m2 with a single scan addressing method with the advantage of space charge priming. It also adopted 14 sub‐fields in order to reduce the dynamic false contour.
