Phase Chemistry and Thermal Chemistry on the Calcium-Containing Brine Systems

It is well known that phase equilibria and phase diagrams can successfully guide the comprehensive utilization of the salt lake resources. The researches on phase chemistry and thermal chemistry of the calcium-containing brine system are essential to promote the development of brines. In this paper, the progresses on the phase chemistry and thermal chemistry of the calcium-containing brine system around the world from 2007 up to now were summarized. The problems existed and the new trends in the future were also carried out.

Phase Equilibria of the Aqueous Lithium-Containing Carbonate Systems

It is well known that the phase diagram plays an important role in exploitation and utilization of salt lake resources. To effectively employ the systems containing lithium and carbonate, the study on phase equilibrium is essential to the comprehensive utilization of the salt lake resources. In this paper, progresses on phase equilibria of salt-water systems containing lithium and carbonate were presented.

Phase Equilibria of the Aqueous Systems Containing Magnesium and Borate Ions

It is well known that the comprehensive utilization of salt lake resources can not only create a good economic benefit, but also effectively protect ecological environment of salt lake and achieve sustainable development. After potassium separating for potassium fertilizer from salt lakes, the rest of mother liquor brines are rich resources of magnesium and boron. Research on phase equilibria of salt-water systems containing magnesium and borate can provide reference data for comprehensive development and utilization of salt lake resources.

Exploitation and Comprehensive Utilization for Qinghai Salt Lakes

As a special type of resources, salt lakes have important scientific, economic values and environmental effects. Salt lakes are store houses of mineral salts. The productive elements (such as lithium, magnesium, potassium, boron, etc.) among salt lakes, are precious resources with strategic interest for the development of economics and society of China. This paper briefly reviews the characteristics and techniques in comprehensive utilization of Qinghai salt lake resources and proposes some suggestions in scientific, as well as political and strategic level.

Origin and evolution of oilfield brines from Tertiary strata in western Qaidam Basin: Constraints from 87Sr/86Sr, δD, δ18O, δ34S and water chemistry

Chemistry of major and minor elements, 87Sr/86Sr, δD, δ18O and δ34S of brines were measured from Tertiary strata and Quaternary salt lakes in the western Qaidam Basin. The water chemistry data show that all oilfield brines are CaCl2 type. They were enriched in Ca2+, B3+, Li+, Sr2+, Br−, and were depleted in Mg2+, SO42−, which indicated that these brines had the characteristics of deeply circulated water. The relationship between δD and δ18O shows that all data of these brines decline towards the Global Meteoric Water Line (GWL) and Qaidam Meteoric Water Line (QWL), and that the intersection between oilfield brines and Meteoric Water Lines was close to the local spring and fresh water in the piedmont in the western Qaidam Basin. The results suggest that oilfield brines has initially originated from meteoric water, and then might be affected by water-rock metamorphose, because most oilfield brines distribute in the range of metamorphosing water. The 87Sr/86Sr values of most oilfield brines range from 0.71121 to 0.71194, and was less than that in salt lake water (>0.712), but close to that of halite in the study area. These imply that salt dissolution occurred in the process of migration. In addition, all oilfield brines have obviously much positive δ34S values (ranging from 26.46‰ to 54.57‰) than that of salt lake brines, which was caused by bacterial sulfate reduction resulting in positive shift of δ34S value and depleteed SO42− in oilfield brines. Combined with water chemical data and δD, δ18O, 87Sr/86Sr, δ34S values, we concluded that oilfield brines mainly originate from the deeply circulated meteoric waters, and then are affected by salt dissolution, water-rock metamorphose, sulfate reduction and dolomitization during the process of migration. These processes alter the chemical compositions of oilfield brines and accumulate rich elements (such as B, Li, Sr, Br, K and so on) for sustainable utilization of salt lake resources in the Qaidam Basin.

Crystallization path of natural brine evaporation using the DPAO method

Understanding the full scope of the diagram representing saline solutions and the thermodynamics of the phase relationships is important for obtaining the most cost-effective process design for industrial salt recovery technology from salt lake resources. In previous works, we have shown that modeling electrolyte systems using the DPAO method can help us to represent the chemical compositions of highly concentrated solutions of natural brines extracted from two Tunisiansalt lakes, Sebkha and Chott. This simulation shows good agreement with classic representations but with the advantage that this method allows all the system components to be added without changes or approximations. The aim of this work is computing the chemical composition changes of a given initial solution and the number of moles of salt precipitated along a progressive concentration of brine solution by evaporation with DPAO, then to determine crystallization paths of a mineral assemblage reacting with water, and finally to compute the mineral quantities precipitated as well as chemical composition of solutions at different reaction progress rates. A comparison between experimental and predicted results was made to test the validity of the new approach and to develop evaporation sequences for the recovery of desired products. This simulation method helps to establish rules to navigate through the diagrams and to draw crystallization paths with the algebraic solution of material balances.
