Evaluating the Level of Safety Climate and the Prevalence of Work-related Accidents Considering the Mediating Role of Job Satisfaction (Case Study: Shabnam Food Industry)

Background and Objective: The spread of accidents in various industries shows the need to pay more attention to safety factors and try to improve employees' job satisfaction. This research aims to evaluate the safety atmosphere level and the prevalence of work-related accidents by considering the mediating role of job satisfaction in the Shabnam food industry. Materials and methods: This research is an applied and descriptive-non-experimental research, during which a sample of 122 employees of the Shabnam food industry was selected to distribute the questionnaire. To measure the relationship between research variables, a researcher-made questionnaire including 3 variables and 36 items was used, and a structural equation model and SPSS26 and LISREL8.8 software were used to check the hypotheses. Results: The analytical results of the data showed that the evaluation of the level of safety climate and job satisfaction harmed the prevalence of accidents caused by work. Also, the review of the level of safety climate had a positive and significant effect on job satisfaction. Finally, the mediating role of job satisfaction in the relationship between the assessment of the level of safety climate and the prevalence of work-related accidents was confirmed. Conclusion: It was recommended that Shabnam food industry officials improve the safety atmosphere of the work environment by creating a safe work environment by providing safety equipment and relevant training and controlling the statistics of accidents; It was also concluded that paying attention to the needs of employees and getting their satisfaction can increase the speed of this process.

Safety climate and seat belt use in the fire service

Objective Motor vehicle incidents or apparatus crashes are a leading cause of firefighter fatalities in the United States. Nonuse of seat belts has been linked to some of these fatalities. This research seeks to understand the relationship between safety climate and seat belt use among firefighters, as findings will provide insights into factors that may bolster seat belt use and protect firefighters. Methods Data were collected from 208 career firefighters working for a city fire department in the southeastern United States. Structural equation modeling was used to test a hypothesized model and to assess the relationships between organizational safety climate, work group safety climate and seat belt use. Results It was determined that positive perceptions of workgroup safety climate, as a higher order factor, comprised of supervisor support, horizontal cohesion, and vertical cohesion, was positively associated with seat belt use within a sample of firefighters. Organizational level safety climate did not have a significant relationship with seat belt use but did positively influence workgroup safety climate perceptions. Conclusions Safety climate has been associated with safety compliance and participation behaviors, but more research was needed to specifically examine the impact of safety climate on seat belt use in firefighters. The findings point to the importance of safety climate as a leading indicator and predictor of seat belt use. Bolstering safety climate through safety programs, commitment to safety, effective communication, supportive supervisors and cohesion should ultimately aid in bolstering seat belt use among firefighters, which is important to curtailing firefighter injuries and fatalities.

Patient safety climate research in primary care dentistry: A systematic scoping review.

Patient safety climate constitutes an important element for quality improvement. Its current evidence base has been generated in hospital settings in developed countries. Studies in dentistry are limited. To systematically explore the evidence regarding assessing patient safety climate in dentistry. We developed a search strategy to explore MEDLINE, SCOPUS, and Web of Science databases from January 1st, 2002, to December 31st, 2022, to include observational studies on patient safety culture or patient safety climate assessment. Methodological features and item data concerning the dimensions employed for assessment were extracted and thematically analyzed. Reported scores were also collected. Nine articles out of 5584 were included in this study. Most studies were generated from high-income economies. Our analysis revealed methodological variations. Non-randomized samples were employed (ranging from 139 to 656 participants), and response rates varied from 28% to 93.7%. Three types of measurement instruments have been adapted to assess patient safety climate. These mainly consisted of replacing words or rewording sentences. Only one study employed an instrument previously validated through psychometric methods. In general, patient safety climate levels were either low or neutral. Only one study reported scores equal to or greater than 75. Despite diverse assessment tools, our two-decade analysis reveals a lag compared with medicine, resulting in methodological variations for assessing patient safety climate. Collaboration is vital to elevate standards, prioritize patient safety across oral healthcare services, and advocate for integrating safety climate into local and national quality and patient safety strategies.

Supporting Error Management and Safety Climate in Ambulatory Care Practices: The CIRSforte Study.

To improve patient safety, it is important that healthcare facilities learn from critical incidents. Tools such as reporting and learning systems and team meetings structure error management and promote learning from incidents. To enhance error management in ambulatory care practices, it is important to promote a climate of safety and ensure personnel share views on safety policies and procedures. In contrast to the hospital sector, little research has been dedicated to developing feasible approaches to supporting error management and safety climate in ambulatory care. In this study, we developed, implemented, and evaluated a multicomponent intervention to address how error management and safety climate can be improved in ambulatory care practices. In a prospective 1-group pretest-posttest implementation study, we sought to encourage teams in German ambulatory practices to use proven methods such as guidelines, workshops, e-learning, (online) meetings, and e-mail newsletters. A pretest-posttest questionnaire was used to evaluate level and strength of safety climate and psychological behavioral determinants for systematic error management. Using 3 short surveys, we also assessed the state of error management in the participating practices. In semistructured interviews, we asked participants for their views on our intervention measures. Overall, 184 ambulatory care practices nationwide agreed to participate. Level of safety climate and safety climate strength (rwg) improved significantly. Of psychological behavioral determinants, significant improvements could be seen in "action/coping planning" and "action control." Seventy-six percent of practices implemented a new reporting and learning system or modified their existing system. The exchange of information between practices also increased over time. Interviews showed that the introductory workshop and provided materials such as report forms or instructions for team meetings were regarded as helpful. A significant improvement in safety climate level and strength, as well as participants' knowledge of how to analyze critical incidents, derive preventive measures and develop concrete plans suggest that it is important to train practice teams, to provide practical tips and tools, and to facilitate the exchange of information between practices. Future randomized and controlled intervention trials should confirm the effectiveness of our multicomponent intervention.Trial registration: Retrospectively registered on 18. November 2019 in German Clinical Trials Register No. DRKS00019053.

A hybrid MCDM approach based on combined weighting method, cloud model and COPRAS for assessing road construction workers' safety climate.

The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel approach to assess the safety climate level of different groups of workers in a construction company and predict safety performance and implement targeted improvement measures. This paper utilizes the BP neural network and random forest algorithm to establish a weight learning mechanism for calculating the weights of safety climate evaluation criteria. The cloud model is employed to construct the decision matrix for different groups under the evaluation criteria. Meanwhile, the paper utilizes the COPRAS method to compare the safety climate of different groups. The findings show the accuracy of the CM-COPRAS model is assessed by comparing it with the other methods. The three models are almost consistent in assessing the safety climate for working age groups, accident experience groups, and work type groups, with slight differences in the evaluation results for the education groups. The consistency of the computational results of the CM-COPRAS model with the results of the existing research, i.e., that the education level is positively proportional to the safety climate supports the reasonableness and validity of the CM-COPRAS model. The paper proposes a hybrid MCDM method that integrates the Combined weighting method, Cloud model, and COPRAS for safety climate level evaluation in different construction worker groups. A case study is presented to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed method and to compare it with other methods to validate the effectiveness of the present method.

Relationship between Safety Climate and Safety Behavior in Company X in Indonesia

Throughout 2019–2021, there was a considerable rise in total work accident cases in Indonesia, increasing from 210,789 to 234,370. According to the location of the incident, accident cases in the workplace also escalated from 139,999 to 144,929. The purpose of this study was to measure the maturity level of the safety climate at Company X in Indonesia and analyze its relationship with safety behavior. This was a quantitative study on a total of 200 respondents using a questionnaire as the data collection method. A structured questionnaire was used to capture the socio-demographic characteristics of respondents, the safety climate, and safety behavior. Respondents participated in this study by responding to the items in the questionnaire distributed. The findings of this study indicated that the maturity level of the safety climate at Company X was at the adequate level with a very strong relationship between the sub-dimensional variables and safety climate. The relationship between safety climate and safety behavior was quite strong. This study emphasized that an increase in the level of safety climate could improve safety behavior. Therefore, increasing safety climate level is effective to reduce the incidence of occupational accidents.

Violation with concerns of safety: A study on non-compliant behavior and the antecedent and consequent effects in power grid construction

Non-compliant behaviors have been indicated to be leading indicators of accidents in workplaces. Though most studies treat intentional non-compliant behavior or violations as monolithic indicators for adverse safety performance, non-compliant behaviors might take different forms with distinct motives and outcomes. To examine and compare the effects of different forms of non-compliant safety behavior, we proposed a construct of risk-adjusted non-compliant behavior, which refers to employees' deliberate deviation from safety rules while considering safety concerns and adjusting their behavior accordingly, and investigated the differential antecedent effects by contextual factors and consequential effects on safety outcomes. By a sample of 390 workers and their supervisors in a power grid construction firm, the results of our study indicated that safety climate and transformational leadership were positively associated with safety compliance and negatively associated with violation by multi-level analyses. However, active transactional leadership also had a positive association with risk-adjusted non-compliant behavior, and this association was moderated by safety climate such that the relationship was stronger in higher level of safety climate. Furthermore, although risk-adjusted non-compliant behavior did not significantly affect penalties for deviance compared to violation behavior, it increased the workers' risk perception of hazard. The implications of these findings for theory were discussed.

The development and validation of the Chinese safety climate scale using the item-response theory approach.

To develop a valid and practical tool to measure the safety climate in China, and further raise awareness of it in Chinese industries, we developed the Chinese safety climate scale (including two subscales at the levels of organization and group separately) based on the work of Huang et al. in 2017. A descriptive survey with the convenience sampling method was conducted in Shanghai Disney Resort, China. A sample of 1,570 employees was involved in the final data analyses. The item response theory (IRT) analyses with graded response models were conducted using. The unidimensionality and local independence assumption were held. The Cronbach's α of organization- and group- level safety climate subscale was 0.912 and 0.937, respectively. The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) showed good model fit for a one-factor model of the organization-level safety climate subscale, χ2 (df = 20) = 129.158, p < 0.001, CFI = 0.994, TLI = 0.992, NFI = 0.993, IFI = 0.994, RMSEA = 0.059, 90% CI = (0.050, 0.069), and SRMR = 0.048. A one-factor model also fits well for the group-level safety climate subscale, χ2 (df = 44) = 219.727, p < 0.001, CFI = 0.996, TLI = 0.9925, NFI = 0.995, IFI = 0.996, RMSEA = 0.050, 90% CI = (0.044, 0.057), and SRMR = 0.046. Discrimination and difficulty parameters showed that all items effectively spanned the range of the latent trait and could successfully separate participants at different safety climate levels. Items in the organization-level and group-level Chinese safety climate subscales had significantly different discrimination parameters, fitted well with the models, and had a substantive relationship with the latent traits. The Chinese safety climate scale was reliable and valid overall. They can facilitate the research and survey regarding the safety climate in China.

Influence of Safety Climate on Safety Performance in Gas Stations in Indonesia

Accidents in gas stations may cause injury or even death to people. Moreover, an accident in a gas station might halt its operation for some time. When an accident takes place in a region with scant amount of gas stations, it may lead to fuel scarcity in the area, affecting the economy and sparking other issues. Therefore, safety climate and safety performance in gas stations need to be evaluated. Safety climate has been used as a tool to assess the safety performance of an organization at a given time. The aim of this study was to understand the influence of safety climate on safety performance in gas stations in Indonesia. A total of 129 gas stations were selected. To assess safety climate, a safety climate questionnaire was used, while the safety performance was captured by conducting on site structured observations. The assessment shows that gas stations have a good level of safety climate, especially when it is compared with other industrial sectors in Indonesia, such as construction. The study findings also show that safety climate has a significant positive impact on safety performance. Three safety climate dimensions with significant positive influence on safety performance are management commitment, communication, and personal accountability. Therefore, improvement efforts should focus more on these dimensions to boost safety performance in gas stations.

Preventing Surgical Site Infections: Are Safety Climate Level and Its Strength Associated With Self-reported Commitment To, Subjective Norms Toward, and Knowledge About Preventive Measures?

Surgical site infections (SSIs) represent a major source of preventable patient harm. Safety climate in the operating room personnel is assumed to be an important factor, with scattered supporting evidence for the association between safety climate and infection outcome so far. This study investigated perceptions and knowledge specific to infection prevention measures and their associations with general assessments of safety climate level and strength. We invited operating room personnel of hospitals participating in the Swiss SSI surveillance program to take a survey (response rate, 38%). A total of 2769 responses from 54 hospitals were analyzed. Two regression analyses were performed to identify associations between subjective norms toward, commitment to, as well as knowledge about prevention measures and safety climate level and strength, taking into account professional background and number of responses per hospital. Commitment to perform prevention measures even when situational pressures exist, as well as subjective norm of perceiving the expectation of others to perform prevention measures were significantly ( P < 0.05) related to safety climate level, while for knowledge about preventative measures this was not the case. None of the assessed factors was significantly associated with safety climate strength. While pertinent knowledge did not have a significant impact, the commitment and the social norms to maintain SSI prevention activities even in the face of other situational demands showed a strong influence on safety climate. Assessing the knowledge about measures to prevent SSIs in operating room personnel opens up opportunities for designing intervention efforts in reducing SSIs.

Safety Climate Assessment in Fuel Stations in the West Java Region

Fuel station accidents still happen frequently all around the world. Accidents in fuel stations may cause harm to many. Fuel station environments must thus be managed well to maintain a high safety climate level. However, our literature review shows that research on the safety climate in fuel stations is scarce. This study attempts to assess the safety climate level in fuel stations in the West Java region, Indonesia. The aims of this research are to acquire the safety climate level of fuel stations, review safety climate dimensions which need serious improvement, and discover key aspects that impact the safety climate level. To achieve these goals, the Bahasa Indonesia version of the NOSACQ-50 questionnaire was used to assess the safety climate in 240 fuel stations; 678 responses were collected. The findings show that the safety climate level of fuel stations was, on average, 3.07, which is a fairly good score. Among all seven dimensions, workers’ safety priority and risk non-acceptance need the most improvement. Moreover, safety training is found to be the most influential aspect on safety climate because workers with training experience have higher safety climate perceptions. Ironically, more than 28% of respondents reported that they had not been properly trained. Therefore, fuel stations need to make sure that all employees have attended appropriate safety training. In this way, higher safety climate ratings can be achieved, hence moving forward to a safer working environment.

Assessment of workplace safety climate among power sector employees: A comparative study of cross-culture employer in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s power sector has undergone extensive reforms to improve its technical and monetary performance over the last two decades. However, despite its fast-growing and hazardous nature, safety research remains limited in this context. This study aims to address this gap by assessing the level of safety climate in the power sector and comparing the safety climate in plants operated by multinational companies (MNCs) and local companies (LCs).To this end, five power plants operating in the southern part of the Punjab region (in Pakistan) were included in this study. The Nordic Occupational Safety Climate Questionnaire (NOSACQ-50), an analytical tool comprising of 50 items across seven dimensions, was used to determine the level of safety climate. An independent T-Test was then applied to compare the means in two different setups to draw a conclusion about overall safety climate differences. In MNCs, overall management/leadership perception improved; however, workers in both setups responded similarly in many cases. The lowest observed score in both setups was related to worker’s prioritization of safety and risk non-acceptance. The study highlights the importance of a company’s policies, procedures, and leadership commitments in creating a stronger safety climate by instilling trust in workers. The study further demonstrates that cross-cultural and strong policies devised by multinational companies help to improve the overall safety climate andconcludes that promoting an efficient and positive safety climate in the power sector is a long journey and that can only be achieved if all workers and leaders take on an active role.

Effects of personality on driving behaviors among professional truck drivers: The mediating effect of safety climate

Introduction: The number of traffic accidents involving truck drivers remains high, and strategies to eliminate the probability of such accidents have been proposed, among which enhancing the safety climate has attracted much interest. The main purpose of the current study was to validate the Chinese version of the safety climate scale for truck drivers and apply it to investigate the mediating effect of safety climate between truck driver personality and driving behavior. Method: A total of 389 male truck drivers completed the Big Five Inventory, the Chinese version of the trucking safety climate scale, the driver behavior questionnaire and the positive driver behavior scale. Results: The reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the organization-level safety climate scale and the group-level safety climate scale were confirmed through factor analysis. More importantly, a path analysis revealed that the organization-level safety climate mediated the effects of agreeableness and neuroticism on aggressive violations, ordinary violations and lapses, while the group-level safety climate mediated the influences of agreeableness, neuroticism and openness on positive behavior and all four kinds of aberrant driving behaviors. Conclusions: This study introduced the trucking safety climate scale into China and stressed the significance of improving both the organizational and the group levels of safety climate to reduce accidents involving professional truck drivers. Practical Applications: First, the adapted safety climate scale for Chinese truck drivers contributes to further investigating the role that safety climate plays in the safety problem of truck drivers in China. Moreover, the critical impacts of both levels of the trucking safety climate serve as reminders for relevant companies to not only pay attention to establishing an organization-level safety climate but also invest more effort into promoting the group-level safety climate.

When and for whom organizational identification is more effective in eliciting safety voice: an empirical study from the construction industry perspective

Safety voice (SV) is a form of voice in which employees express opinions or concerns about organizational safety. It plays an important role in preventing accidents and promoting safety performance. The purpose of this study is to reveal the emotional factors and boundary conditions behind employee engagement in SV, especially in the construction context. This study, therefore, investigated how organizational identification (OID) drove construction project participants’ SV using a three-way interaction model of perceived insider status (PIS) as an individual difference and safety climate (SC) as an organizational contextual difference. The proposed model was tested using a sample of 357 participants in different construction projects. The results showed that OID was positively correlated with SV. The interaction effect of OID and PIS on SV depended on SC, with PIS enhancing the identification–voice relationship at a low level of SC and weakening it at a high level of SC.

Safety Climate in the Indonesian Construction Industry: Strengths, Weaknesses, and Influential Demographic Characteristics

The Indonesian construction industry is a significant contributor to economic growth in Indonesia. However, poor safety performance limits its contributions due to the negative impacts of poor safety on project performance. This research aims to assess the level of the safety climate in the Indonesian construction industry, identify its strengths and weaknesses, and understand the influence of individual demographic characteristics on the safety climate. Data were collected using a questionnaire survey from 1757 respondents working in six large state-owned construction companies in Indonesia. Results indicate that the overall safety climate level is fairly good. However, the safety climate scores of individual safety climate items are observed to vary widely. The scores reveal that construction employees understand the importance of safety and management demonstrates a degree of safety commitment, particularly by having regular safety communications. In contrast, the implementation of safety is limited in reality because safety is not considered a priority at work. Lack of safety resources and limited enforcement of safety rules further hinder the implementation of safety at the project level. Large state-owned construction companies such as those where data were collected should take the lead in changing the work practices in the Indonesian construction industry to improve safety performance. Level of education, length of work experience, position, permanency of job status, work location (project or office-based), and type of project are individual demographic characteristics that influence the level of the safety climate. Understanding the influence of these characteristics on the safety climate allows specific intervention strategies to be used to improve safety.

Diverse Impact of Sensitive Sub-Categories of Demographic Variables on Safety Climate of High-Rise Building Projects

The identification of significant areas impacting safety performance has always been a key concern for construction management researchers. This paper aims to examine the diversified influence of sensitive sub-categories of demographic variables on construction safety climate (SC). The data relating to fourteen demographic variables and twenty-four formerly validated SC statements were collected from forty-one under-construction high-rise buildings in Pakistan. The variances in respondents’ distribution among various sub-categories of demographic variables, and influence of each sub-category of demographic variables on SC statements were analyzed using cross-tabulation, Spearman’s rho correlation coefficients, independent sample Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. The study comprehends that the employees in the age group of 20 years or below and between 41 and 50 years, engaged for over 48 h per week, having 4 dependent family members, primary education, and/or lesser working experience, attained a comparatively lower SC level. Likewise, frontline workers and foremen are observed to be employed for extended working hours, causing them fatigue. It also discovers that safety alertness level steadily declines once employees get acquainted with their tasks, thus necessitating to arrange periodic refresher safety training sessions. The study recommends concentrating on frontline workers and foremen who are less educated and fall in the age group of 41–50 years by resolving their safety concerns and providing them adequate safety training, promptly replacing their defective equipment, improving worksite conditions, and counselling them about the significance of wearing PPE and adhering to all the safety rules regardless of the difficulty in their enactment. A joint focus on the heightened personal attributes of employees and risky SC statements is expected to enhance safety performance on under-construction building projects. Moreover, the study’s results can be cautiously generalized and applied to other countries having similar work environment.

Safety climate analysis at two thermal power plants

The present work evaluates the safety climate as it reflects safety culture and is considered as a fast tool for assessing safety culture with minimum resources required. The evaluation is done for a private thermal combined cycle power company, Plant A. Another private company is also producing electric energy and water desalination, Plant B. Both plants are in Bahrain and under the management of one company. The evaluation is done through questionnaires, including all the staff of 210 employees. The questionnaire used in the present work is based on Nordic Safety Climate Questionnaire (NOSACQ-50) and modified by the help of the health and safety department of Plant A to be suitable to the power plant. Also, interviews are conducted to validate and support the questionnaire. Analysis has been done by different statistical methods using Microsoft Excel. The overall safety climate level of the two plants was found to be above average. The overall mean score of all results is 3.67 on a scale of 1 to 5. The mean score for most of the dimensions was higher than 3, which is considered a positive result. The level of safety for the daytime workers was found to be greater than the safety level of the shift workers. Also, the study reveals some factors that affect the safety climate level, such as, the nature of the work, the experience and the number of safety workshops attended. Â

A mixed-methods approach to examining safety climate among truck drivers

The purpose of the current study was to use a mixed-methods approach to understanding safety climate and the strategies to improve safety climate among truck drivers. Using both survey (N = 7246) and interview (N = 18) responses provided by truck drivers regarding key safety climate items, the current study identified a number of positive and negative policies, procedures and practices that truck drivers perceived as the determinants of whether their organizations are committed to the promotion of safety at work. Item response theory (IRT) analyses were conducted to identify discrimination parameters indicating which safety climate items were most sensitive to the safety climate level. Discriminative items were identified at both the organization and group levels which can be used to evaluate safety climate and differentiate a high versus low safety climate across groups and organizations in the trucking industry. Based on our results, we also offer safety researchers and practitioners some recommendations on what and/or how to intervene with and promote organizational safety climate in the trucking industry.

Good and bad apples in a Barrel: Opposing ends of within-workgroup safety climate

Conventional measures of safety climate strength based on variance statistics can be used to monitor and manage the lack of consensus in safety climate perceptions among workgroup members. However, any notable deviations in within-workgroup safety climate perceptions may have more pertinent protective or deleterious effect on workplace safety and health than safety climate strength through the work-related social interaction and mutual influence. The present study, utilizing electrical/utility worker sample, showed that upper- and lower-bound of within-workgroup safety climate perception scores can uniquely moderate the associations between safety climate level and its intended outcomes such as safety behaviors and lost work days due to injury. Moreover, both ends of within-workgroup safety climate perception scores showed significant main effects on motor vehicle accident frequency. For the better practice of safety climate management, both ends of safety climate perceptions within workgroups need to be considered in addition to safety climate level and strength.

Perceptions of Safety Climate in Construction Projects between Workers and Managers/Supervisors in the Developing Country of Iran

What are the different perceptions on safety climate (SC) by workers and managers/supervisors engaged in the construction industry of developing countries? Reconciling these two differing views is pivotal for mitigating and avoiding both the injured and fatal accidents in the construction industry, especially in those developing countries where safety conditions are poor and unpredictable, and safety measures are inadequate in most cases. To answer this research question, the collective perceptions of 118 construction workers and 123 managers/supervisors on the SC in construction projects in Iran were gleaned and investigated. In particular, these perceptions were initially collected by two different empirical surveys validated by a sample of university professors and construction managers and then analyzed through the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) test and Bartlett’s test of sphericity under factor analysis, together with a one-sample t-test. Results indicated that “workers’ attitudes and perceptions”, “safety knowledge and training”, “working relationships and roles of colleagues”, and “workers’ risk perceptions” are important categories of SC factors perceived by construction workers, whereas “safety rules and management practices” is the essential category of SC factors discerned by managers/supervisors. The difference in perceptions between workers and managers/supervisors is considered to be beneficial for an overall understanding of SC in general and for developing countries in particular. Moreover, a series of effective suggestions for improving SC in the construction industry of developing countries are provided with reference to each category. The views of SC factors are reinforced as a social process combining the synergies of workers and managers/supervisors, as well as proper safety training to be pushed forward as an essential activity that should be incorporated in human resources development of construction organizations so as to improve the existing level of SC, leading to fewer accidents at the industry level.
