Occupational Health and Safety in the RMG Sector of Bangladesh: An Enormous Order

Today it’s a matter of concern to ensure the occupational health and safety in the Ready Made Garments (Hereinafter referred to as RMG) sector of Bangladesh. Some accidents such as the Tazrin Fashion Fire and the Rana Plaza collapse draw attention - to the critical situation the workers of Bangladesh are working in, and to what extent they are at risk. It's a matter of regret and shame that, it has been forgotten that the RMG sector not only contributes to our national economy but also emancipates the poor people from poverty and hunger, This sector also highlights our country in front of the world. Textiles and clothing account for earnings a lot in Bangladesh, where most of these come from the apparel sector. This sector has a crucial role in alleviating poverty in Bangladesh. However, rapid growth, as well as the failure of the Bangladesh government to enforce its building and labour regulations, resulted in worker abuse and unsafe for poorly constructed factories. This series has been elucidated to what extent occupational health and safety covered and their impact, also focuses on how the rights of the worker are violated and analysis the duties and responsibilities of the related persons such as occupiers of the factories, Trade Unions, Collective Bargaining Agent, Inspector, buyer and so on. It also focuses the statutory protection to ensure Occupational health and safety. Finally, put some recommendations or ways out to ensure the safe and sound working conditions of the workers of the RMG sector in Bangladesh.

A mapping review of challenges in existing technology-based occupational safety training in the tourism and hospitality industry: Research potential in commercial kitchens

Introduction: An effective response to a safe and healthy work environment relies on advanced preparedness such as occupational safety training. The main objectives of this study are to describe and classify the most critical challenges and identify knowledge gaps in the literature that could inform future research. Methods: A systematic mapping review gathers information from six search engines; Francis and Taylor, Scopus, Science Direct, Emerald Insight, and SpringerLink, which yielded journal publications between 1948 and 2022. The data were analyzed using meta-analysis from 135,310 article search results, whereby 20 articles met the inclusion criteria. The studies varied in terms of aim, study design, and reporting detail. Results: The results showed that Canada and the United States are countries that study safety training in the tourism or hospitality industry, mainly in food management and food safety. The results also show that studies on occupational safety training in commercial kitchens are not common in the existing literature. The findings revealed that the highest number of articles involving safety training focused on food safety and food management in the tourism industry but less on kitchen workers' safety. Conclusions: This mapping review demonstrates hospitality workers' struggles, especially commercial kitchen workers. This review presents the types of technologies used for occupational safety training and provides an overview of different strategies that address the challenges. Among the most significant obstacles in occupational safety and health training are a lack of knowledge, high financial costs for implementation, and outdated policies from authorities.

More Than a Joke: The Intersection of Gender-Based Humor and Gender Inequities Experienced by Women Department Chairs in Academic Medicine.

Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study is to describe how women academic department chairs in emergency medicine, surgery, and anesthesiology experience humor in the workplace. Method: Interviews were conducted with 35 women department chairs in academic medicine from 27 institutions that aimed to describe women's leadership emergence. The data from the primary study yielded rich and revealing themes involving participants' experiences with humor in the context of their leadership roles, justifying a secondary analysis focusing specifically on these experiences. Relevant remarks were extracted, coded, and summarized. Results: Participants discussed two broad types of humor-related experiences. First, they described how they responded to aggressive gender-based humor directed at themselves or their colleagues by tolerating it or expressing disapproval. This humor includes demeaning quips, insulting monikers, sexist jokes, and derogatory stories. Participants often did not confront this humor directly as they feared being rejected or ostracized by colleagues. Second, they described how they initiated humor to address gender-related workplace issues by highlighting gender inequalities, coping with sexual harassment and assault, and managing gender-based leadership challenges. Participants felt constrained in their own use of humor because of the need to be taken seriously as women leaders. Conclusion: Women leaders in academic medicine use humor to confront gender-related issues and experience aggressive gender-based humor in the workplace. The constraints placed on women leaders discourage them from effectively confronting this aggressive gender-based humor and perpetuating gender inequities. Eliminating aggressive gender-based humor is needed to create safe and equitable work environments in academic medicine.

Fires at the petrochemical industry facilities cause harm to human life and health and significant economic and environmental damage. Accidents associated with ignitions at oil and petrochemical storage facilities in 2018–2022, resulted in injuries of 21 persons, and 10 fatalities; the total economic damage exceeded 1.5 billion rubles. One of the causes of fires is the spontaneous combustion of pyrophoric corrosive deposits (17 %). As a result of the reaction of the interaction of iron disulfide with oxygen in the air, pyrophoric corrosive deposits ignite. Large-scale steel equipment containing sulfurous oil is exposed during operation to corrosive and mechanical wear, risk of fires, and explosions. One of the protection methods of oil and gas equipment against corrosion and pyrophoric formations is surface treatment with paint anticorrosive coating. Modern paint coatings proved to be ineffective in ensuring anticorrosive protection of metal equipment. The main objective of the article is to study various options of metal surface treatment by electrochemical methods with the following comparison of their protective ability. The efficiency (isolating ability) of various treatments of St3 steel has been analyzed. Based on the results of electrochemical corrosive studies, chronogalvanometric curves have been built. Therefore, to determine the efficiency of the protective effect of anticorrosive paint coatings, the accelerated corrosive-electrochemical method is recommended. For the treatment of the oil equipment surface, the anticorrosive paint coating containing the following layers: inhibitor (urotropinу solution); primer (sodium polyacrylate, ethyl alcohol); and two layers of sodium polyacrylate, have been proposed to use. The application of this protective coating will ensure a fault-free mode of operation of oil equipment for more than 10 years without coating replacement. This will guarantee the safe work of employees at the petrochemical industry facilities.

Health and Safety Information Management on Construction Sites in Lagos State, Nigeria

Management of health and safety information helps to achieve a safe work environment by educating construction participants on risks and hazards on sites. This study therefore identified and assessed health and safety information on construction sites with a view to enhancing safe work environment. Data for the study were collected from site operatives on construction sites of registered construction organisations in Lagos State, Nigeria. On each site visited, three (3) site operatives were randomly selected from bricklayers, carpenters, iron benders, and so on working on the identified sites. This gave a sample size of one hundred and sixty-five (165). Questionnaire administration was adopted for data collection. The total number of copies of the questionnaire retrieved was one hundred and twenty-six (126) -76% response rate. Mean score and standard deviation were the analytical tools used to rank the information, while Kendall’s Coefficient of Concordance was used to determine the degree of agreement among the respondents. The analysis revealed that the most frequent health and safety information on construction sites were first aid procedures, safety signs and symbols, protective equipment. Kendall’s Coefficient of Concordance revealed strong agreement among the respondents on the ranking. The safety of operatives should be considered the number one priority; hence, the contractor should ensure the provision of adequate and well-equipped first-aid boxes on every site. Posters, safety, and warning signs indicating different hazardous working conditions should be provided on the sites. When these operatives are healthy, work can go smoothly on construction sites.

Aligning the New Work Environment With OECD Goal 8: Design for A Global Automobile Brand

This paper explores the economic sustainability of new work environments by examining how interior design strategiescontribute to the OECD's Sustainable Development Goal 8 for decent work and economic growth. SDG 8 aims topromote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic development, as well as full and productive employment. Inpilot study, 46 employees of the brand are interviewed across nine sessions, encompassing focus groups and one-onone interactions. Using content analysis, this data is analysed qualitatively to interpret patterns related to spatialpolitics, timing politics, and hybrid working culture of the new work environment. Identified patterns includeindividually focused tasks, virtual collaboration, agile working, socialization, and urban interaction. These patterns arethen traced from the conceptual design crafted for the brand and finally discussed in terms of their alignment withSDG 8.2 (diversify, innovate and upgrade for economic productivity), 8.4 (improve resource efficiency in consumptionand production), 8.8 (Protect labour rights and promote safe and secure working environments for all workers).

ANALYSIS OF RISK MANAGEMENT TERMINOLOGY IN EMPLOYEE HEALTH AND SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

An analysis of the main provisions and terms in accordance with domestic and international standards in the field of occupational health and safety of employees (hereinafter referred to as OSH) and risk management was carried out in order to avoid different interpretations in the draft Law on Occupational Safety and Health of Employees. To achieve this goal, the continuous sampling method, the descriptive method, the method of analyzing dictionary definitions, the method of word formation analysis, and the comparative method of component analysis were used. The study was conducted in four stages: analysis of the literature on occupational safety and health protection of workers; selection of terms for analysis; analysis of approaches to defining the concepts of "term", "terminology", analysis of lexical-semantic and structural features of terms; formation of general conclusions and prospects for further research. The justification of the change in the definitions of the main terms in OSH was carried out. It is proposed to present OSH at work as a part of the overall management system of the employer's activities, which is aimed at creating safe working conditions for employees and preserving their health by managing occupational risks. We recommend adding the concept of accident to the terms in the draft Law of Ukraine on occupational safety and health of workers, since the Procedure for Investigations and The Civil Protection Code of Ukraine defines the specified term. It is proposed to define occupational risk as a combination of the probability of occurrence of a work-related hazardous event(s) or exposure(s) and the severity of injury and health impairment that may be caused by this event(s) or exposure(s); occupational risk assessment as a process of comparing the results of occupational risk analysis with risk criteria to determine whether the occupational risk and/or its magnitude is acceptable (acceptable); occupational risk management is preventive and protective measures that reduce and/or modify (change) occupational risk to an acceptable (acceptable) level. The justification of the semantic load of the most used terms in the field of occupational safety and health protection of workers: risk, risk management, acceptable risk, dangerous event, incident was carried out for their qualitative use in the draft Law on Occupational Safety and Health of Workers. Recommendations for the description of terms and definitions for the draft Law of Ukraine on occupational safety and health of workers have been developed.

Ethical gamified health communication intervention to prevent Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs) in Myanmar migrants at Thailand's seafood factory: A study protocol

Background Thailand's seafood industry heavily depends on Myanmar migrant workers, who face significant occupational health issues, including an increase in work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs). Due to linguistic and cultural limitations, traditional health communication strategies often fail to reach this population. This study explores the effectiveness of a culturally and linguistically tailored gamified health communication intervention aimed at preventing WMSDs in Myanmar migrant workers in a Thai seafood factory. Methods The intervention is developed and then implemented in two phases. The objective of the study is to develop, implement, and evaluate a gamified health intervention for Myanmar migrant workers that will prevent WMSDs. The intervention is customized to the workers' cultural background and work natures through focus group discussions, key informant interviews, and expert reviews. The intervention then consists of a set of 12 exercises designed to prevent the WMSDs. The Intervention’s impact is assessed through pre- and post-intervention evaluations measuring changes in knowledge, awareness, and self-reported musculoskeletal health. Results Since this is a study protocol, precise findings are not yet available. The target audience is expected to adopt safe work practices more frequently, have better physical health, and have a greater understanding of WMSDs. Conclusions This protocol describes a novel way to use a culturally-tailored and ethically appropriate gamified health communication intervention to address the health issues (such as WMSDs) experienced by Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand's seafood industry. This technique may serve as a model for comparable health promotion initiatives in other labour-intensive industries and migrant worker groups, promoting better awareness and prevention of WMSDs. Analysis Of Factors That Influence The Performance Of Employees In Boarding And Unloading Of Ship Goods In The Port

The activity of loading and unloading ship goods at the port is one of the vital activities in the goods distribution chain. The performance of employees involved in this process has a direct impact on port efficiency and productivity as well as safety and security in its operations. However, in practice, a variety of factors might impact employee effectiveness in these activities. The aim of this research is to analyze the factors that influence the performance of employees involved in loading and unloading ship cargo activities at the port. This study0 uses quantitative research methods by collecting data through surveys using questionnaires and literature studies. The data that has been collected is then analyzed using a regression test using the SPSS program. The research results show that the factors that influence the performance of employees loading and unloading ship goods at the port include supervision, human resource competency and job security. Therefore, to improve employee performance, efforts need to be made such as strengthening the monitoring and control system for employee performance, improving employee training and competency development, and creating safe and comfortable working conditions for employees.

In industrial enterprises, any employee comes into contact with many sources of electric and magnetic fields. The electrical installations around us generate various electromagnetic fields. The work examines the features of the formation of the electromagnetic environment near machine tools. The goal of the work is to ensure safe working conditions for operators and dispatchers of production process control panels based on reducing the impact of the electromagnetic field to standard values.

Factors Contributing to Millennial Employees’ Turnover Rates

Millennial employees in the bakeshop industry exhibited high turnover rates primarily due to the need for a safe work environment, recognition, and opportunities for promotion. The study focused on the factors contributing to millennial employees’ turnover rates. This study employed a quantitative, non-experimental, correlational design to investigate turnover intention among millennial employees in the bakeshop industry in Cebu Province. Data were collected via a researcher-made questionnaire from 34 randomly selected millennial employees. Analysis through descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and weighted means revealed that millennials, who formed a significant portion of the working class, tended to leave their jobs if their specific needs were not met. The primary factor driving their turnover was self-preservation, with employees prioritizing a safe and healthy work environment. A workplace free from injuries and accidents not only attracted but also retained employees, leading to reduced absences and increased productivity. Consequently, a commitment to health and safety by employers enhanced employee retention and reduced business disruptions. Additionally, recognition and opportunities for promotion were crucial for retaining millennial employees. They were likely to leave if they felt undervalued or saw limited promotion opportunities. Training and development were less significant than promotions in influencing their decision to stay. The study also found that changes in management or internal talent management practices had minimal impact on retention, provided the work environment remained stable and employees were treated well. Overall, addressing millennials’ needs for safety, recognition, and career growth was vital for reducing turnover rates in the bakeshop industry.

Practices and challenges of safety management in outsourced facilities management

Introduction: Outsourcing is a commonly occurring organizational activity, but one associated with negative occupational safety outcomes. Improving the management of safety in workplaces where contractors are employed is vital, but under-researched in the service sectors. The aims of this paper were to investigate both the practices and challenges of safety management in outsourced facility management (FM), an important global service sector. Method: Twenty-three semi-structured interviews were conducted with clients and contractors in three different FM outsourcing arrangements between large corporations in the UK. Data were thematically coded against frameworks derived from existing literature to identify deployed safety management practices and reveal challenges associated with safety management in these outsourced relationships. Results: Safety management practices in outsourced FM conformed to known practices clustering into four previously identified categories (planning, selecting, on-site working, and checking). A fifth category (reviewing) was not observed. Operating across national boundaries, applying national contracts locally, working with mandated KPIs, and contract specifications all created new challenges for safety management not previously reported. Other known challenges associated with economic pressure and disorganization were observed. Conclusion: Safety management practices observed in safety critical industries also apply in FM. However, the challenges of safety management in these three cases included regulatory failures that have not been routinely identified in other empirical studies of safety in outsourcing arrangements. Practical application: Adopting widely accepted safety management practices support safer working in outsourced FM and encourage cross-sector learning. New challenges for safety management noted here encourage consideration of unintended consequences of contract terms and conditions, require corporate agreement on how to ensure safety compliance when working transnationally, and a review of decision-making and processes and procedures to enable effective and safe working locally.

Investigating the Key Factors Influencing Falling Object Incidents at Construction Sites in Batu Pahat, Johor

Building construction refers to the methods and businesses associated with assembling and erecting structures, particularly those designed for residential purposes. The need for a controlled environment to mitigate the effects of climate change was initially purely functional. A construction site presents a wide range of ever-evolving threats, with risks that are often unique to the construction business. Therefore, ensuring that workers are well-trained and aware of these risks is essential for safeguarding themselves and their coworkers from potential harm or even fatalities. This research aims to explore the root causes and consequences of falling object incidents on individuals, assets, and reputation within the construction industry. Thoroughly analyzing the root causes and consequences of incidents informs the development of a targeted intervention plan. This plan aims to reduce severity and address specific issues, such as inadequate safety measures or equipment failures, with the overarching goal of significantly decreasing falling object incidents. This study employs a survey questionnaire as its methodological tool. The procedure includes conducting literature reviews and incorporating sample survey questionnaires from previous researchers. The methodology used to analyze the statistical data was SPSS software via Reliability Tests, One-way ANOVA Tests, and Correlation and Interferential Analysis. The results revealed a strong statistical correlation (r > 0.5, n = 50, p < 0.05) between organizational/departmental roles and responsibilities, the behavioral behavior of construction workers, incidents at work, health/disease problems, and the consequences of the incident. Therefore, to mitigate all the potential consequences, some intervention plans are being proposed, such as the implementation of Toolbox Meeting (TBM) and Toolbox Talk (TBT), a Toolbox Training Program, and the monitoring of physiological conditions for construction workers to maintain the well-being of the workforce and ensure a safe working environment.

The Role Of Trade Unions In Health Protection And Provision Of Safe Working Conditions For Medical Workers Part 2. Health care Workers' Trade Union Activities

Introduction. Healthcare workers are an important part of national healthcare systems ensuring its sustainability. Thus, it is necessary to introduce state mechanisms aimed at protecting their health and ensuring safe working conditions. Moreover, protection of rights and interests of healthcare workers is a matter of social justice. International and national public organizations and especially trade unions of healthcare workers play an important role in dealing with these issues. The purpose of the study is to consider examples of trade union activities on health protection and provision of safe working conditions in a number of countries upon the data on health issues that experience medical specialists as well as factors influencing these issues. Materials and methods. A content analysis of the official Internet pages of trade union organizations and their reporting documents for 2015-2024 was performed. Also, such methods as analysis, synthesis, secondary analysis and systematization of data were used. Results. Around the world, healthcare workers face occupational risks of infectious diseases, and are constantly exposed to various types of biological and non-biological hazards due to their working conditions, which are considered unsafe. Even cases of ill-treatment, threats, attacks or insults during the performance of professional duties are documented. Therefore, protection of health and safety of medical professionals, as well as their social and labor rights and interests is one of the main areas of trade unions as public organizations created on the initiative of healthcare workers.

A crucial factor in the process of absorption of nanomaterials through the skin is the disruption of its protective function, which may result in an increased risk of penetration and permeation of nanomaterials into the dermis and the human bloodstream. Exposure to disrespectful maternity care and perceptions of respectful maternity care among nursing and midwifery pre-registration students in China: A national cross-sectional study

AimsTo 1) determine the prevalence and types of disrespectful maternity care witnessed by students; 2) describe students’ perceptions of respectful maternity care and associated factors; and 3) investigate whether witnessing disrespectful care influences their perceptions of respectful maternity care. BackgroundLimited evidence exists about nursing and midwifery students' perceptions of respectful maternity care and prevalence of disrespectful maternity care in China. Understanding students' perceptions can inform pre-registration curricula and clinical practice programs, promoting the implementation of respectful maternity care. DesignAn exploratory national online survey was conducted. MethodsData were analysed using bivariate analysis and multi-factor analysis of variance. ResultsAmong 733 students, positive perceptions towards respectful maternity care were common. Approximately one-fifth witnessed disrespect, with physical violence, lack of communication and untimely care most frequently reported. A better understanding of respectful maternity care was associated with female students of Han ethnicity, majoring in midwifery, undertaking a longer internship/practicum and reporting fewer instances of observed disrespect.Although students reported positive perceptions of respectful maternity care, inadequate understanding was evident. Incorporating relevant content about respectful care into the curriculum is suggested. Reducing students’ exposure to disrespectful maternity care may ensure that certain forms of disrespect or abuse do not become normalized among students. This requires system-level efforts to create a safe and supportive working environment for maternity health providers. ConclusionTo promote respectful maternity care in China, system-level changes are warranted. Respectful maternity care needs to be essential content in pre-registration midwifery and nursing curricula. Encouraging students to identify poor practice and discuss good practice in a safe learning environment is warranted.

Volatile gas scavenging in the paediatric intensive care unit: Occupational health and safety assessment.

The use of volatile anesthetic agents in the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) is experiencing increased interest since the availability of the miniature vapourizing device. However, the effectiveness of scavenging systems in the presence of humidifiers in the ventilator circuit is unknown. We performed a bench study to evaluate the effectiveness of the Deltasorb® scavenging system in the presence of isoflurane and active humidity by simulating both infant and child ventilator test settings. A total of four ventilators were set to ventilate test lungs, all with active humidity and a Deltasorb scavenging canister collecting exhaled ventilation gas. Two ventilators also had isoflurane delivered using the Anesthesia Conserving Device- small (ACD®-S) on the inspiratory limb (also called alternative ventilator configuration). We performed instantaneous measurements of isoflurane and continuous sampling with passive badges to measure average environmental exposure over a test period of 6.5 hours. Scavenging canisters were returned to the company, where desorption analysis showed the volume of water and isoflurane captured in each canister. Both instantaneous point sampling and diffusive sampling results were below the occupational exposure limit confirming safety. The canisters collected both isoflurane and a portion of the water vapour delivered; the percentage of captured water and isoflurane collected in infants was higher than the child ventilator test settings. The tested scavenging configuration was effective in maintaining a safe working environment with active humidity and inspiratory limb (alternative) ventilator configuration of the the miniature vapourizing device.

The Power Circuit of Mechanical Damping Device for Cooling System of 50 kW Pulse Diesel Generator

Diesel generators have advantages such as high reliability, superior economic performance, and a wide range of applications. However, its working environment is relatively sealed, and it is difficult for the internal heat of the motor to transfer to the outside. Prolonged high temperatures can affect the operational performance of the motor and even cause danger. Therefore, it is necessary to design a reasonable cooling system to ensure its efficient operation within the safe working temperature. The water-cooled cooling system has good heat dissipation performance, consisting of components such as a water pump, radiator, fan, water tank, and temperature controller. By precisely controlling the water flow rate and wind speed, effective control of the internal temperature of the generator is achieved, extending the service life of the equipment. This article studies the power circuit of the mechanical damping device in the cooling system of a 50kW pulse diesel generator, develops heat transfer and hydraulic energy circuits, and constructs the frequency response of the circuit. As the water quality increases in the circuit, the amplitude decreases at low frequencies (less than 4 rad/s) and frequencies close to 10 rad/s, and the amplitude aligns. For one parameter variable, the optimal frequency is 3-4 rad/s.

Animal Experiments and Laboratory Safety within the Scope of Occupational Health and Biosafety

Occupational health and biosecurity terms include scientific approaches regarding ethical values, reliable methods, and a series of precautions to be taken against risks and hazards for employees and the living material being studied. Research and development activities carried out within the scope of biotechnology involve many risks under laboratory conditions, which are their own physical area. Many precautions and practices have been defined to analyze these risks and take precautions before they occur, and laboratory guides have been created in line with these definitions. During studies carried out with experimental animals under laboratory conditions, safe working rules may be violated due to physical conditions, equipment and materials, treatments applied to the subjects, negligence, or faulty practices caused by the researcher or expert. Biosafety in animal experiments consists of a set of ethical conditions and practices declared in the guidelines of specialized laboratories at their own level, protecting employees, subjects, and life outside the laboratory. In this review, possible risks and dangers that may arise at different biosafety levels and the precautions and practices that can be taken against them are evaluated.
