S-100 immunoreactive cells in the spleen and bursa of Fabricius of broiler chickens

The distribution of S-100 protein in spleens and bursae of Fabricius of broiler chickens with various diseases was investigated by an immunohistochemical method with antiserum to bovine S-100 protein. S-100 protein-positive cells were found in six cases of 34 chickens. In spleens, S-100 protein was detected in reticular cells in the ellipsoids of the sheathed arteries and eosinophilic granulocytes. Follicular dendritic cells in germinal centres were also S-100 protein-positive. In the bursa, reticular cells of the follicles and eosinophilic granulocytes in the follicular cortex and surface epithelium were positive for S-100 protein. The evidence suggests that S-100 protein may be involved in diseases of chickens.

Bronchial carcinoid with S-100 positive sustentacular cells.

A case of double bronchial typical carcinoid of the central type, with a nodal metastasis and paraneoplastic Cushing syndrome is reported. The case is remarkable because both the primary tumors and nodal metastasis were composed of a double cell population: one was arranged in nests, was argyrophilic, immunostained with PHE-5 monoclonal antibody, and contained neurosecretory granules; the other one was neither argyrophilic nor PHE-5-immunoreactive, but was strongly immunoreactive for S-100 protein, had a stellate morphology and was at the periphery of the nests of the other cells. The S-100 immunoreactive cells were regarded as a sort of "sustentacular" or "satellite" cells, which are themselves neoplastic. Bronchial carcinoids with S-100 positive cells, although strictly related with other bronchial carcinoids, may in fact represent a group of tumors with different histogenesis and/or differentiative pattern. More work should be done to elucidate whether there is any relevant clinical difference between bronchial carcinoids with or without S-100 reactive cells.

Olfactory Neuroblastoma

An immuno-electron microscopic study performed by a pre-embedding peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) technique revealed S-100 protein reactivity in the cytoplasm and connecting processes of marginal cells of olfactory neuroblastomas. The overlapping cytoplasmic processes of S-100 immunoreactive cells completely surrounded the main membrane-bound granule-bearing tumor cells forming a continuous interface between those tumor cells and fibrous connective tissue. The S-100 immunoreactivity was also observed in the cytoplasm and processes on non-membrane-bound granule-bearing tumor cells within the tumor nodule. The tumor cell nodules and isolated tumor cells were completely surrounded by basement membrane material stainable with anti-laminin antiserum. It appears that the membrane-bound granule-bearing tumor cells of olfactory neuroblastoma are partitioned by basement membrane of S-100 protein-reactive cells and their processes. No S-100 protein-reactive cells were observed within the olfactory epithelium of the two patients with olfactory neuroblastoma. To determine a possible origin of S-100 protein-positive cells, normal olfactory epithelium from six adult patients at autopsy was studied for S-100 reactivity. There were no S-100 protein-positive cells within the normal olfactory epithelium. We discuss the evidence for considering olfactory neuroblastoma a variant of paraganglioma.

Neuron-specific enolase, neurofilament protein and S-100 protein in the olfactory mucosa of human fetuses. An immunohistochemical study.

Immunohistochemical examination for neuron-specific enolase (NSE), neurofilament protein (NFP), and S-100 protein was performed in the olfactory mucosa of human fetuses. NSE and NFP immunoreactivities were found in the olfactory receptor cells, while no S-100 immunoreactive cells were recognized within the olfactory epithelium. The anti-NSE serum stained various types of nerve bundles in the lamina propria mucosae; a population of the NSE-positive nerve bundles was also immunoreactive for NFP. The anti-S-100 serum clearly demonstrated Schwann cells associated with the nerve fibers in the lamina propria mucosae. These findings suggest a possibility of NSE and NFP as new marker substances for olfactory cells and indicate that immunohistochemistry is a useful tool to analyse the cellular components of the olfactory organs in normal and pathological conditions.
