The Cpsu in Figures (On the Seventieth Anniversary of the Second Congress of the RSDLP)

Abstract The Communist Party of the Soviet Union is marking the seventieth anniversary of the Second Congress of the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party (RSDLP). The significance of this congress to world history, as is emphasized in the decree of the Central Committee of the CPSU, lies in the fact that "the process of unification of the revolutionary Marxist organizations was completed there, and the party of the working class of Russia was founded, based on the principles of political ideology and organization developed by V. I. Lenin. A proletarian party of a new type came into being, the party of Bolsheviks, the great Leninist party."

Certain Theoretical Problems In The Leninist Nationality Policy Of The Cpsu

In all its multifaceted activity the CPSU is guided by the truly scientific theory of Marxism-Leninism, which it simultaneously creatively develops and enriches by generalizing from the experience of revolutionary practice. During the seven decades that separate us from the Second Congress of the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party (RSDLP), at which the process of unification of the revolutionary Marxist organizations was completed and a party of Russia's working class was organized on the basis of the principles of political ideas and organization developed by Lenin, our Party has made a tremendous contribution to the development of Marxist-Leninist theory. A new stage in that direction was the working out of its most important and fundamental postulates in the Program of the CPSU, the decisions of the twenty-third and twenty-fourth congresses, the plenums of the Central Committee, the Party documents on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution, the one-hundredth anniversary of Lenin's birth, the fiftieth anniversary of the Soviet Union, and the seventieth anniversary of the Second Congress of the RSDLP, in which profound generalizations are drawn from the experience of the building of socialism and communism, and of the contemporary worldwide revolutionary movement. In the overall set of problems the Marxist-Leninist theory of nations and nationality relationships that underlies the Leninist nationality policy of the Party has been further developed.

Lenin and Pravda, 1912-1914

In 1962 a gathering of Soviet historians at the Academy of Sciences chose the fiftieth anniversary of Pravda’s founding to call attention to certain shortcomings in Soviet scholarship concerning V. I. Lenin’s leadership of the famous Bolshevik daily. It was noted that although a considerable amount had been written on Lenin’s literary contributions to the paper, insufficient attention had been paid to the problem of its political leadership during the crucial two years before the war. This observation heralded the publication of several detailed studies which predictably found that Stalin, Molotov, and certain other “conciliatory elements” within Pravda’s editorial board had hindered Lenin’s efforts to complete the work of the Prague Conference in equating the Bolshevik faction with the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party.

An Important Source on the History of the Soviet Working Class in 1918-1920

The history of the Soviet working class — the leading force in society — occupies an important place in historical scholarship in our country. The considerable body of research literature in this field has already received historiographic analysis. (1) Further treatment of the problem will require the assembling and interpreting of various groups of sources. The papers in the archives of the Central Committee of the RKP(b) (Russian Communist Party [Bolsheviks]) are in the front rank of collections of documents on the history of the Soviet working class in terms of the information contained. In these papers are reflected the Party's policies in implementing Lenin's plan for the building of a new society; the leading, organizing, and sustaining role of the Party as vanguard of the masses of the workers; and their connection with the people. At the same time, the papers testify to feedback from the working class to the Party, its political and organizational support to and strengthening of the Party, and practical activity in carrying out Party policy. The importance of the collection of documents of the Central Committee of the RSDRP(b) (Russian Social-Democratic Labor Party [Bolsheviks]) and the RKP(b), stored in the Central Party Archive of the Institute of Marxism-Leninism of the Central Committee of the CPSU, has repeatedly been emphasized in surveys. (2) The next step to be taken in the study of that collection is to clarify the place and role of the documents it contains as they pertain to specific problems in history. The present article attempts to demonstrate the significance of the collection as a source in the history of the Soviet working class in the Civil War period.
