A MODIFIED G.A.K.l GYRO ATTACHMENT

After consultation with Wild (U.K.) a simple modification was made to a standard G.A.K. 1 Gyro-attachment with the object of increasing the scale reading accuracy of the instrument. The instrument was then mounted on a T-16 theodolite and loaned to the Mining Department of the Royal School of Mines for trials. These trials were carried out over several months and included physical movements of the equipment over several hundred miles and both surface and underground observations. This paper explains the principle and use of the modification, compares its influence on reduction methods and attempts a simple analysis of the overall results.

Rosenhain Centenary Conference - 4. The future role of physical metallurgy in relation to engineering practice Discussion

I was naturally extremely interested in the points which Sir James (Keynote) raised on the re-unification of the field of metallurgy, and particularly as he started from the point of view of the definition given by Rosenhain in his 1914 textbook. We have been trying to do this for the past 15 or 16 years in Imperial College. Appropriately, it was in the forerunner of Imperial College, the Government School of Science Applied to the Arts, that the teaching of metallurgy in this country really started, initially to exploit the mineral resources of the top 23 cm of the surface of this country. At that stage, it was the winning of the primary metal from the mineral that dominated, and it was Percy’s task to organize teaching of this subject when he came from the practice of medicine in Birmingham, to take up the chair of metallurgy in the Government School. This Government School, as a result of a wrangel with T. H. Huxley, became the Royal School of Mines. Percy left in rather a huff because of an argument with Huxley, but his successors such as Sir William Roberts Austin and Sir Harold Carpenter, in fact devoted their energies to what was essentially physical metallurgy. While this was going on, the teaching of chemical or extraction metallurgy extended into the teaching of chemical analysis, which was practiced near the mine where the primary metal was extracted. Subsequently a lot of the teaching spread from the Royal School of Mines to the growing number of academic departments in the country. The chemical side of metallurgy tended to be rather arid, concentrating as it did on chemical analyses which were pursued by ancient methods bearing no relation to the interesting physical techniques which we have at the moment. Thus, in the minds of many students, physical metallurgy burgeoned forth from the exploitation of X-ray and microscope techniques, and the development of dislocation and alloy theory to become an interesting and dominant topic in metallurgy teaching.

ANAESTHESIA FOR DENTAL TRFATMENT IN SMALL ANIMAL PRACTICE

Several methods of anaesthetising dogs and cats employed in the Department of Veterinary Surgery, Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies for dental treatment are described and their suitability assessed in 1,200 dental cases. The therapeutic procedures for which anaesthesia was indicated are also briefly described.

A NOTE ON EXPERIENCES WITH A HEWLETT PACKARD 3800B DISTANCE METER

AbstractOne of the first HP 3800B Distance Meters to reach Britain was delivered to the Royal School of Mines shortly before Easter 1972. Since that time the instrument has been used for a variety of purposes, but most heavily during field courses with undergraduate and postgraduate students. As a result of this usage some comments on the equipment and its accuracy can be made.

David Meredith Seares Watson, 1886-1973

David Meredith Seares Watson was born on 18 June 1886 at Higher Broughton, near Salford in Lancashire. He was the son of David Watson and Mary Louisa Watson ( née Seares). David Watson was a chemist and metallurgist who was a pioneer of the electrolytic refining of copper and had been educated at Clewer House School and at the Royal School of Mines where he was a student of T. H. Huxley, A. C. Ramsay and the metallurgist Perry, and took one of the earliest D.Sc.s in London, receiving a gold medal on graduation. He joined the Broughton Copper Company and eventually became the Managing Director. David Watson was a descendant of a Scottish family which included such eminent men as his father John Watson, an Advocate of Edinburgh and once Lord Provost of that city; great-uncle David Watson who was Minister of Cupar, Fife, once Moderator of the Church of Scotland; his great-grandfather James Watson who was Writer to the Signet, Edinburgh; and a Professor of Civil and Natural History in the United Colleges, St Andrews. Ultimately the line came from Turriff, Banffshire. Mary Louisa Watson was the daughter of Samuel Seares, a stockbroker of London, who was reputed to have among his ancestors a former Governor of Rhode Island at the end of the seventeenth century who married a ‘Red Indian’ wife. D. M. S. obtained a pedigree of this Sears or Seares, as variably written. From this stock apparently descended the Sears of Sears, Roebuck. D. M. S. Watson had one sister, C. M. Watson, who read classics at Manchester University and achieved first class honours on graduation at the age of nineteen, obtaining 97% marks from the famous Gilbert Murray of Oxford. She died tragically young in her second year at Somerville College, Oxford, having won the Chancellor’s prize for Greek Prose. It is not surprising that the children of such forebears should both have been brilliant.

General Discussion

Professor R. N. Pryor (Royal School of Mines, Imperial College, London). Those of us who are engaged in active consideration of the problems of the exploita­tion of British mineral resources and its effect upon the environment in general frequently find that one of the underlying problems is the lack of definition of a minerals policy. When the question of minerals policy was raised in the House of Lords some years ago, the reply from the government was that Britain’s policy was to buy her minerals in the cheapest market. That over the years may have been a most successful policy, but whether it can continue to be so we may well find out in the relatively near future, if the oil fuel crisis develops. I believe that we must continue to grope our way towards a mineral policy founded on knowledge of the resources we possess and our estimate of demands on those resources. And we cannot ignore the fact that those demands are depen­dent on far-reaching other policies of population, land use, etc. For this reason I welcome the information given us by Mr Archer and the work of the Mineral Resources Consultative Committee, who are laying the foundations of knowledge in this field. Before closing, I would like to ask one question. I have, perhaps erroneously, gathered the impression that these surveys of our resources are largely the efforts of teams of geologists. Having been associated for many years in the assessment of exploitation possibilities, I would emphasize that this is a multi-disciplinary exercise requiring the combined talents of not only geologists, but of experienced mining engineers, mineral processors, mineral marketeers, environmentalists, to name only some of the more important. I would like to ask whether those teams engaged in the vital task of assessing our resources do contain adequate representation of other disciplines?

Vincent Charles Illing, 1890-1969

Vincent Charles Illing was an internationally distinguished petroleum geologist who exemplified in his career the advantages of integrated academic and industrial work. His name will always be linked with the Royal School of Mines, London, where he created and developed over forty years the only department of petroleum geology in this country and one of the foremost in the world. His studies of the occurrence of oil and gas were no mere academic exercise. He was unique in British geology in combining the duties and responsibilities of a professor with those of guiding petroleum exploration and exploitation in various parts of the world. He never relinquished his consultant’s role. His biography is of particular interest now that pragmatism in scientific work has regained much of its former respectability.

Molecules in microtime.

When your President invited me to deliver the Silvanus Thompson Memorial Lecture this year I was very honoured and also very interested because of the many close connections between Thompson and the Royal Institution of which I am Director at the present time. In 1876, when he was a student at the Royal School of Mines, his professor, Edward Frankland, who had previously held the Chair of Chemistry at the Royal Institution, gave Thompson a ticket which enabled him to attend the Friday Evening Discourses and other lectures. Frankland had a very high opinion of Silvanus' abilities and perhaps, in giving this ticket, he thought of an earlier occasion when Mr. Dance did the same for a young man called Michael Faraday. Thompson attended many lectures at the Institution and indeed seems to have derived more of his education from these than from lectures at the Royal School of Mines.
