Phenotypic characterization of two-row barley (Hordeum vulgare L. ssp. vulgare) germplasm conserved in Osman Tosun Genebank of Türkiye by multivariate analysis model

AbstractBarley is a crucial cereal crop with a diverse genetic heritage that includes landraces-traditionally cultivated variants that have adapted to varying agro-climatic conditions over centuries. Preserving barley landraces in genebanks is of utmost importance for safeguarding genetic diversity and aiding future breeding endeavors.This study aims an agro-morphological characterization of a selected collection of two row barley landraces conserved in the Osman Tosun Genebank. A total of 262 barley accessions were assessed in controlled field conditions to analyze various agro-morphological traits. The study unveiled notable disparities in the morphological traits of the genotypes, specifically in flag leaf anthocyanin, flag leaf sheath wax, spike shape, spike density, lemma color, grain color, lodging tendency, days to 50% flowering, plant height, spike length, spikelet quantity, and thousand grain weight, among other critical agronomical characteristics. To scrutinize the morphological disparities, the research utilized principal component analysis and ascertained that nearly 77.22% of the overall variance was accounted for by the first two principal components. The first four principal components accounted for 90.96% of the total variation, thus indicating significant genetic diversity among genotypes. The results of the cluster analysis revealed the presence of diverse genetic resources within the collection, with distinct groups of genotypes exhibiting similar traits being identified. The results of the agro-morphological characterization are a valuable resource for researchers and breeders, aiding them in making informed decisions regarding the management and application of barley landraces in breeding programs.

Identification of archaeological barley grains using geometric morphometrics and experimental charring

Barley is one of the main cereals found in archaeological sites in the north-western Mediterranean basin, over the last 8 millennia. Grains are preserved in archaeological sediments by charring after or before dehusking. Morphological criteria for distinguishing 2-row from 6-row barley, but also hulled barley from naked barley, can be affected by charring and this can complicate identification of barley subgroups. In the last decade, geometric morphometrics applied to uncharred barley grains has shown the possibility of identifying barley subgroups, but its applicability to archaeological remains still needs to be ascertained. We used 3985 raw and charred grains of 113 current varieties to (1) assess charring effects on the shape of barley caryopses, depending on their subgroup and whether they were charred husked or dehusked and (2) select the best dataset for identifying barley subgroups. We also used 700 archaeological grains, from the Neolithic period to the end of the Middle Ages, to (3) compare the morphometric taxonomic assignment of the grains with their carpological identification based on discrete anatomical features in a series of 7 archaeological samples. Our results indicate size and shape differences between barley grains when charred husked or dehusked. Although the charring process results in greater morphometric homogeneity, it allows subgroups of barley to be identified. For the 2-row vs. 6-row identification, more than 71% of the charred modern grains can be correctly identified. For the hulled vs. naked identification, the correct cross-validation percentages range from 70 to 73%. Finally, the good correlation between carpological and morphometric identifications of archaeological grains suggests that it is possible to identify archaeobotanical samples in the future.

Trends, challenges and opportunities in the in situ conservation of cereal landraces in Scottish islands

Landraces are traditional crop varieties that often have special adaptations to the farming environment in which they have evolved and are therefore a valuable source of useful traits for plant breeders. In most agriculturally advanced countries, landraces of the main crops have generally been superseded by modern varieties. An exception to this in the United Kingdom is the cultivation on the Scottish archipelagos of Orkney, Shetland and the Outer Hebrides of three cereal landraces: bere, a 6-row barley (Hordeum vulgare), small oat (Avena strigosa) and Hebridean rye (Secale cereale). Our study focused on trends in their cultivation and use over the past 20 years. In the Outer Hebrides, a mixture of all three has continued to be grown on more than 200ha for feed because of its tolerance of nutrient-deficient sandy soils. Future cultivation is threatened, however, by damage from geese and deer, especially to fields used for seed production. In Orkney and Shetland, only bere and small oat are grown, and always as sole crops. The area of bere has increased in Orkney, from about 10ha in 2004 to almost 75ha in 2020 and has been driven by two supply chains producing bere for milling and malting. However, small oat in Orkney, and both small oat and, especially bere, in Shetland have been grown by very few farmers since 2018 and are at serious risk of being lost from cultivation. We discuss these results in the context of measures to support greater on-farm cultivation of these landraces.

Effect of varieties and nitrogen levels on growth indices of malt barley (Hordeum vulgare) under saline water irrigation

A field experiment was conducted during the winter (rabi)season of 2017–18 and 2018–19 at the Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, to study the effect of saline water irrigation on growth indices in 4 varieties (‘BH 902’, ‘BH 946’, ‘BH 885’ and ‘DWRB 101’) of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) at different nitrogen levels (0, 30, 60 and 90 kg/ha). The results showed that, during early growth period both 6-row barley varieties ‘BH 902’ and ‘BH 946’ recorded significantly higher crop-growth rate (CGR), relative growth rate (RGR), net assimilation rate (NAR), specific leaf weigth (SLW) and leaf-area duration (LAD) than both 2-row barley varieties ‘BH 885’ and ‘DWRB 101’, whereas ‘BH 885’ and ‘DWRB 101’ varieties attained higher values of RGR and NAR after 90 days after sowing (DAS). The CGR and LAD recorded maximum values between 61 and 90 DAS, while RGR and NAR showed the highest values up to 30 DAS irrespective of varieties and nitrogen levels. Application of 90 kg N/ ha significantly enhanced the CGR up to 90 DAS, RGR up to 30 DAS and LAD up to 120 DAS, while NAR values were significantly increased up to 60 DAS with 30 kg N/ha and SLW up to 90 DAS with 60 kg N/ha. The RGR, NAR and SLW were significantly decreased with the application of different nitrogen levels between 91 and 120 DAS as compared to the control. The variety ‘BH 946’ gave the highest grain yield of 5.15 t/ha, being 5.1, 7.3 and 14.7% higher than ‘DWRB 101’, ‘BH 902’ and ‘BH 885’, respectively. Different varieties responded to N application only up to 60 kg/ha. Grain yield of barley was positively correlated with CGR, SLW and LAD but negatively with RGR.

Determination of Yield and Yield Characteristics of Some Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) Genotypes Under Supplemental Irrigation Conditions in Van

This research was carried out to investigate the adaptability abilities of some barley varieties in Van ecological conditions in the winter growing season of 2020-2021. Sixteen genotypes were grown according to randomized block design with three replications. The quantity of supplemental irrigation was equivalent to a total precipitation of 114 mm. According to the results obtained, the number of days to spike was 167.67-175.66 days, plant height 63.37-91.85 cm, number of spikes per square meter 403.67-619.67, lodging 0-10%, chlorophyll ​​​​45.34- 53.09 SPAD units, maturity period 36.0-36.7 days, canopy temperature 30.0-30.4 oC, spike length 7.30-9.96 cm, number of spikelets per spike 33.8-21.7, number of fertile spikelets 7.13-15.73, thousand grain weight 36.67-45.83 g, hectolitre weight 62.30 – 66.10 kg/hl, biological yield ​​20.36-20.45 t/ha, and grain yield 3.08–6.98 t/ha. The highest grain yield was obtained from two row barley varieties; Calabey, Akar, Tosunpasa and Asil. The highest biological yield was measured in Anka-11 and Aydanhanim cultivars.

Determination of The Seedling Reactions of Some Two-Rowed Barley Landraces Maintained at Osman Tosun Gene Bank to Pyrenophora Teres F. Teres

Seedling stage reactions of thirty-eight 2-rowed barley landraces representing different areas of Turkey obtained from Osman Tosun Gene Bank to two Pyrenophora teres f. teres isolates were evaluated. In addition, barley cultivars Bülbül 89 and Avcı 2002 were included. Landraces exhibited different reactions to the disease and their reactions ranged from resistant- moderately resistant to susceptible. Landrace number 33 obtained from Diyarbakır was found the most resistant to the disease compared to all other landraces whereas landrace number 10 obtained from Bilecik-Söğüt, and cultivar Bülbül 89 were the most susceptible. The majority of the landraces were classified between the Moderately Resistant-Moderately Susceptible to Moderately Susceptible-Susceptible. Landrace number 33 exhibited Resistant-Moderately Resistant reactions to both isolates. This landrace from Diyarbakır could be used as the seed source and in the breeding studies for obtaining barley cultivars resistant to the net form of net blotch disease.

Effect of priming and storage containers on seed quality of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.)

The study was conducted on seeds of three two-rowed varieties viz. BH 885, DWRB 92 and DWRB 101 and three six-rowed rowed barley varieties viz. BH 946, BH 393, BH 902 at CCS HAU, Hisar, during 2020-21. Nine months naturally aged seeds were primed with GA 3 (50, 100 and 150ppm), Ethanol (1, 3 and 5%) and ZnO nano-particles (50, 100 and 150ppm). Primed seeds were stored in ordinary (Cloth bags) and moisture-proof (Polythene bags>700gauge thickness) containers under ambient conditions. The results revealed that seed primed with ZnO 100ppm recorded the lowest electrical conductivity (166.59 and 147.93µS/cm/seed) whereas seeds primed with ethanol 5% recorded maximum (181.26 and 162.59 µS/cm/seed) in cloth and polythene bag, respectively. The highest electrical conductivity was recorded in BH 902 (201.90 and 182.03µS/cm/seed) in cloth and polythene bags, respectively while minimum in BH 393 (153.70 µS/cm/seed) in cloth bag and in BH 885 (126.73 µS/cm/seed) in polythene bag. Maximum germination (91.00 and 92.5%), seedling length (30.61 and 33.58cm) seedling dry weight (306.67mg and 282.33), vigour index-I (2800 and 3118) and vigour index-II (23650 and 21048) were observed in primed seeds with ZnO 100ppm while minimum germination (85.83 and 89.33%), seedling length (22.64 and 24.23cm), seedling dry weight (181.97mg and 189.44mg), vigour index-I (1958 and 2170) and vigour index-II (15557 and 16923) were in ethanol 5% in cloth and polythene bag respectively. Among varieties, DWRB 101 recorded highest germination percentage (93.17 and 94.10%) while BH 885 recorded minimum (79.57 and 82.43%) in cloth and polythene bag, respectively. Maximum seedling length (28.24 and 31.31cm) was recorded in BH 946 and minimum (26.02 and 29.11cm) was in BH 902. Maximum dry weight was observed in DWRB 92 (264.97mg and 254.73mg) in cloth and polythene bag respectively while minimum was observed in BH 946 (207.07mg) in cloth bag and DWRB101 (180.53mg) in polythene bag. The highest vigour index-I (2595) was found in the BH 946 in cloth bag followed by DWRB 92 (2938) in polythene bag and minimum was observed in BH 885 (2120 and 2402) in cloth and polythene bag, respectively. Maximum vigour index-II (23748 and 22662) was recorded in DWRB 92 in cloth and polythene bags, respectively and minimum was recorded in BH 885 (18232) in cloth bag and in DWRB 101 (16982) in polythene bag. It is concluded that Polythene bags (with thickness >700gauge) are more suitable to maintain the seed quality of barley as compared to cloth bags. DWRB 101 and BH 946 performed better in all the seed quality parameters indicating highly vigourous cultivars which can be used for further breeding programmes. Seed quality of barley can be enhanced through priming with ZnO 100ppm and GA 3 100ppm.

Variability, Correlation, and Path Coefficient Analysis of Grain Yield and Yield-Related Traits of Facultative Barley Accessions Grown Under Rainfed Conditions

A study was conducted during the period of three concessive years from 2016/2017 to 2018/2019 in the experimental field of the Institute of Agriculture - Karnobat, Southeastern Bulgaria with the aim to investigate the variability, heritability, and correlation between grain yield and yield-related traits of breeding lines of facultative barley under rainfed conditions and to select lines with desirable agronomic traits for including in further breeding work for the development of facultative barley varieties for Bulgarian environments. The traits: number of days to heading, plant height, spike length, spikelet number per spike, grain number per spike, grain weight per spike, and grain yield were recorded. The analysis of variance indicated significant differences between 6-rowed facultative barley genotypes in the studied traits. Most of the traits under the study showed the relatively low phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variation. The estimates for heritability in broad-sense were high for the number of days to heading, grain weight per spike, and 1000-grain weight and very high for plant height and spike length suggesting a possibility for improvement of those traits through selection based on phenotype. Whereas low heritability of grain yield was found indicating that the phenotypic selection could be ineffective under these specific conditions. Grain yield of facultative barley accessions showed a significant positive correlation with spike length, spikelet number per spike, grain number per spike and grain weight per spike. The traits with the highest positive direct effect on grain yield were grain number per spike and 1000-grain weight while days to heading had a highly negative direct effect on grain yield. A combination of high heritability and high direct on grain yield in 1000-grain weight and days to heading shows that those traits may be used in early-generation selection in breeding of high-yielding facultative lines. The accession TX01D236 had a significantly higher grain yield compared to check varieties and could be included in future breeding work.

This experiment was conducted to determine the effects of different sowing dates (5th October, 20th October, 5th November, and 20th November) and sowing depths (2, 4, 6 and 8 cm) on yield and some yield characters in two rowed barley (cv. Tokak 157/37) under rainfed conditions. The field study was conducted in Kirsehir ecological condition during 2014-15 and 2015-16 winter growing seasons. Grain yield and important yield traits such as plant height, spike length, number of fertile spike per square meter, number of grain per spike and grain weight per spike were determined. Sowing dates and depths influenced significantly the grain yield and yield components in two consecutive years. Most of the yield components were adversely affected by deeper sowing depths and delayed sowing dates. Based on two-year average, the highest grain yield was recorded with 2733 kg ha-1 at 20th October sowing date and 4 cm depth; in contrast the lowest grain yield was 513 kg ha-1 by the 20th November and 8 cm depth. The Effect of Spike Row Type on the Grain Yield and Grain Filling Parameters in Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) Genotypes under Semi-arid Conditions

Background: Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is one of the more important cultivated crops in the Mediterranean region, where drought and high temperatures during the grain filling stage are the main abiotic stresses limiting its production. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of the spike type on the grain yield, thousand kernels weight and some grain filling parameters. Methods: The present study was conducted on the experimental site of station ITGC in Setif, Algeria, eight Barley genotypes were tested during two cropping seasons (2017/2018 and 2018/2019) in a randomized block design with 3 replications. Result: The results proved significant effect of genotypes and spike types on the grain filling parameters, but no significant effect of spike type on the thousand kernels weight during the both cropping seasons. In addition, the spike type registered significant effect just during the second cropping season. Among the genotypes with 6 rows spike type the local genotype Fouarra have high grain yield (97.79 Q/ha) with a deviation of 37.57% from the total mean of the genotypes with 6 row spike type. Many studies proved that in 6-row barleys, the magnitude of contribution of grain number in grain yield was higher than contribution of grain weight. The grain growth of genotypes studied follows a sigmoid curve, during the first season (2017-2018) the duration of grain filling ranged between 24 days for Saida 183 and 28 days for Rihane 03, for the group of genotypes with 6 rows. In addition, the duration of grain filling for the 2 row genotypes varied from 24 days for G4 to 28 days for genotype G2. During the second season (2018-2019) and for the genotypes with 6 rows, the duration of the grain filling varied from 21 days for the Saida 183 and 26 days for the genotype Fouarra, for the genotypes with 2 rows the duration of grain filling ranged from 21 days for the genotype G2 to 26 days for the genotype G3. The correlation analysis between the grain filling parameters, GY and TKW demonstrate a significant and positive correlation between TKW and MGW and GFR (r = 0.82* and r = 0.84*, respectively). Overall, the genotype variation in grain filling velocity and duration was responsible for the difference in grain yield and the improvement in grain yield was achieved by the increasing in velocity or duration of grain filling.

Resistance of European Spring 2-Row Barley Cultivars to Pyrenophora graminea and Detection of Associated Loci

Pyrenophora graminea is the seed-borne pathogen causal agent of barley leaf stripe disease. In this work, we screened a collection of 206 spring two-row barley cultivars from Europe for their resistance to the fungal pathogen. Artificial inoculation with the highly virulent isolate Dg2 revealed a continuous variation for the incidence of infection, with few highly resistant or highly susceptible genotypes. On average, old cultivars showed higher resistance than the more modern ones. Genome-Wide Association Scan was performed by exploiting available molecular data for >4000 SNP markers and revealed a single, highly significant association on the short arm of chromosome 6H, in a genomic position where quantitative trait loci (QTL) for barley resistance to P. graminea were not detected before. Based on the last version of the reference barley genome, genes encoding for proteins with a kinase domain were suggested as candidates for the locus.

Mutation breeding in six rowed barley: Screening for stem rust resistance in certain induced mutants

During the induced mutagenesis in six rowed barley, 18 mutant lines were isolated from the M2 and M3 generations. Thirteen lines were induced by gamma rays, four by EMS and one by HA. These lines were screened for resistance to stem rust and loss assessment. Mutants were grown in field as well as in earthen pots. Artificial inoculums were provided in condition suitable for rust occurrence. Rust reaction was recorded according to modified Cabb’s scale and the rust intensity was classified as 0,5, 10, 25, 40 and 65 percent. Lines K50-38, K50-97, K50-102 and K40-73 were completely free from infection (0 %) and thought to be immune lines(I). K50-47, KE-4-47 and G50-47 exhibited traces of symptoms and placed under 5% intensity and were very resistant(R). Line KE2-63 exhibited 10% intensity and classified as moderately resistant(MR). Line K50-44; K40-11, K40-67, K30-91, KE3-75, G50-35 and GH3-32 showed 25% intensity of pustules and were put into moderately susceptible(MS) class. One line K30-82 showed 40% intensity and classified as susceptible(S), while line KE4-87 exihibited 65% intensity and was classified as heavily susceptible. Class 100 percent was not observed. Immune, very resistant and moderately resistant were identified as resistant lines and selected for further study, while moderately susceptible and heavily susceptible lines were identified as susceptible lines and discarded. Reduction in yield contributing traits i.e. number of grains/spike, test weight, seed yield and biological yield was also observed which was positively correlated with disease intensity.

Breeding and brewing quality of the Canadian malting barley variety 'CDC Goldstar' lacking lipoxygenase-1.

Various types of malt quality profiles have been investigated to benefit the North American brewing industry. Herein, we report the development and brewing quality of the hulled, two-row malting barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) variety ‘CDC Goldstar’ lacking lipoxygenase-1 (LOX-1-less). This new variety offers a novel malt type for the improvement of beer flavor stability. The agronomic performance of ‘CDC Goldstar’ was tested in the Western Cooperative Two Row Barley Registration Trials during 2013–2014. In addition to high lodging tolerance, the new variety showed 6% higher yield than the current leading variety ‘CDC Copeland’. The malt quality of ‘CDC Goldstar’ showed higher diastatic power and lower wort β-glucan content than ‘CDC Copeland’ and controllable proteolytic modification (soluble nitrogen and Kolbach Index). Pilot- (100 L) and commercial-scale (5,000 L) brewing trials were conducted using ‘CDC PlatinumStar’, another LOX-1-less variety with a low enzymatic profile, as the control variety. Absence of the LOX-1 trait from ‘CDC Goldstar’ maintained trans-2-nonenal levels in aged beers as low as those in other LOX-1-less varieties without affecting major beer parameters, such as ester and aldehyde content or foam stability. The newly developed ‘CDC Goldstar’ malting barley provides added value for the beer industry and consumers.

Heterosis studies in 6-rowed barley (Hordeum vulgare) under different sowing condition

A set of diallel crosses involving 10 diverse parents (excluding reciprocals) of barlay (Hordeum vulgare L.) was made and its F2’s were evaluated under three different date of sowings during rabi 2015-16 and 2016-17 at RARI, Durgapura, Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. Heterosis for grain yield per plant ranged from -20.75 to 41.86 %; -21.95 to 39.65 %and -48.13 to 64.34 % under early (E1), normal (E2) and late (E3) sowing conditions, respectively. Out of 45 crosses, nine crosses in E1 and fifteen crosses in each E2 and E3 exhibited positive significant heterosis while, seven crosses in E1 and E3 and nine crosses in E2 exhibited positive significant heterobeltiosis. Negative significant inbreeding depression for grain yield per plant was reported. Overall, crosses BHS 400 × PL 426, PL 426 × RD 2552 and BH 959 × RD 2552 exhibited positive significant heterosis and heterobeltiosis. Hence, these crosses considered to be most desirable for grain yield per plant. The study revealed good scope for commercial exploitation of heterosis as well as isolation of pure lines among the progenies of heterotic F1 for improvement of yield.

Hierarchical cluster analysis in barley genotypes to delineate genetic diversity

The multivariate technique of hierarchical cluster analysis in 87 barley genotypes indicated substantial geneticdiversity in the experimental material. The experiment was conducted at Barley Research Area of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar during Rabi 2016-17. The estimates of coefficient of variation (CV) were observed highest for the number of grains per spike whereas, days to heading and maturity exhibited the lowest coefficient of variation. UPGMA method with city block distance was used to classify the genotypes and eight clusters were formed having one to thirty one genotypes. Maximum intra-cluster distance was observed for cluster V (38.85) followed by cluster VI (37.20) whereas; it was recorded minimum for cluster VII. The average inter-cluster distance was found to be highest between the clusters II and V (132.11) followed by clusters I and II (126.17) while the lowest inter-cluster distance was observed between clusters V and VI (53.37). The improvement in six rowed barley could be achieved through the use of genotypes assigned in clusters I and IV, whereas the genotypes which contained in cluster II and VII might be considered as potential parents for two rowed barley to obtain high heterotic response and accordingly better segregants for grain yield. The hierarchical cluster analysis adopted in this investigation proved to be very effective and helpful in isolating the most diverse promising genotypes for future study.

Gümüşhane Ekolojik Koşullarında Bazı Altı Sıralı Arpa Çeşitlerinin Tane Kalite Özellikleri ve Besin Değerlerinin Belirlenmesi

This research was carried out with 11 different six rowed barley cultivars (Erginel-90, Meriç, Kıral-97, Çetin-2000, Avcı-2002, Martı, Vamıkhoca-98, Akhisar-98, Lord, Epona and Olgun) during 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 growth seasons to determine some grain quality traits such as moisture content, ash content, protein content, fat content, starch content, acid detergent insoluble fiber (ADF), neutral detergent insoluble fiber (NDF) and various mineral matter contents (K, Mg, P) under Gumushane conditions with randomized block design as three replicated. According to the average of two years, the moisture content of the cultivars were 9.21-9.88%, ash content was 2.00-2.31%, protein content was 12.73-15.65%, fat content was 1.36-2.01%, starch content was 52.61-58.60%, ADF and NDF values respectively 5.52-8.65% to 20.42-25.03%, ranged between. The highest starch ratio was obtained from Olgun cultivar (58.60%). Akhisar-98 cultivar had the highest protein content (15.65%).

Gümüşhane Ekolojik Koşullarında Bazı Altı Sıralı Arpa Çeşitlerinin Tane Kalite Özellikleri ve Besin Değerlerinin Belirlenmesi

Bu araştırma, 2012-2013 ve 2013-2014 yetiştirme dönemlerinde 11 farklı altı sıralı arpa çeşidinin (Erginel-90, Meriç, Kıral-97, Çetin-2000, Avcı-2002, Martı, Vamıkhoca-98, Akhisar-98, Lord, Epona ve Olgun) bazı tane kalite özelliklerini (nem oranı, kül oranı, protein oranı, yağ oranı, nişasta içeriği, asit deterjanda çözünmeyen lif (ADF), nötr deterjanda çözünmeyen lif (NDF) ve çeşitli mineral madde içeriklerini (K, Mg, P)) belirlemek için Gümüşhane koşullarında, Tesadüf Blokları Deneme Desenine göre üç tekrarlamalı olarak yürütülmüştür. İki yılın ortalamasına göre çeşitlerin nem oranı %9.21-9.88, kül oranı %2.00-2.31, protein oranı %12.73-15.65, yağ oranı %1.36-2.01, nişasta içeriği %52.61-58.60, ADF ve NDF değerleri sırasıyla %5.52-8.65 ile %20.42-25.03 arasında değişmiştir. En yüksek nişasta oranı Olgun çeşidinden (%58.60) elde edilmiştir. En yüksek protein oranına (%15.65) ise Akhisar-98 çeşidi sahip olmuştur.

Characterizing the Distribution of Ppm Gluten in Gluten Free Oatmeal Servings Contaminated with a Barley Kernel

Oats are regularly contaminated with gluten-containing grains like wheat, barley and rye. For producers of gluten free oatmeal, contamination potential makes it prudent to understand the consequences in terms of gluten dosing, as labeling requirements specify a gluten maximum. To do this, statistical simulation has been used to produce virtual oat servings (40g) contaminated with either two row or six row spring barley. The results are probability distributions for ‘actual’ ppm gluten (free of measurement influences) and ‘as measured’ via R5 ELISA. Findings show ‘actual’ ppm gluten to be normally distributed with 57 ppm and 41 ppm gluten averages with 14 and 12 ppm standard deviations (stdevs) for two and six row barley, respectively. ‘As measured’ ppm gluten results are lognormally distributed with 61 and 44 ppm gluten averages with 63 and 47 stdevs for two and six row barley, respectively, employing an 80% analytical recovery rate and a multiplier of 1. These analyses show that ‘as measured’ results possess false negative probabilities (relative to a < 20 ppm gluten regulatory requirement) from 0.14 to 0.34 depending on recovery rate and barley type. This work highlights the need for non-homogenous grinding issues to be addressed in whole grain gluten assessment, for analytical recovery rates to be defined for gliadin in oats, and for appropriate conversion factors to be determined in order to attain capable measurement of gluten in oats due to barley kernel contamination.

Optimizing planting geometry for barley-Egyptian clover intercropping system in semi-arid sub-tropical climate.

Intercropping legumes with cereals has been a common cropping system in short-season rainfed environments due to its increased productivity and sustainability. Intercropping barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) with Egyptian clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.) could increase the grain yield of barley and improve resource use efficiency of the intercropping system. However, non-optimum planting geometry has been a hurdle in the adaptation of barley-based cropping systems. This study was aimed at optimizing the planting geometry, and assess the productivity and profitability of barley-Egyptian clover intercropping system. Ten different planting geometries, differing in number of rows of barley, width and number of irrigation furrows and planting method were tested. Intercropping barley with Egyptian clover improved 56–68% grain yield of barley compared with mono-cropped barley. Barley remained dominant crop in terms of aggressiveness, relative crowding coefficient and competitive ratio. The amount of water used was linearly increased with increasing size of barley strip from 3 to 8 rows. The highest water use efficiency (4.83 kg/cf3) was recorded for 8-row barley strip system with 120 cm irrigation furrows compared to rest of the planting geometries. In conclusion, 8-rows of barley planted on beds with Egyptian clover in 120 cm irrigation furrows had the highest net income and cost benefit ratio. Therefore, it is recommended that this planting geometry can be used for better economic returns of barley-Egyptian clover intercropping system. However, barley strips with >8 rows were not included in this study, which is limitation of the current study. Therefore, future studies with >8 barley rows in strip should be conducted to infer the economic feasibility and profitability of wider barley strips.
