Raphidascaroides brasiliensis n. sp. (Nematoda: Anisakidae), an intestinal parasite of the thorny catfish Pterodoras granulosus from Amazonia, Brazil

A new anisakid nematode, Raphidascaroides brasiliensis n. sp., is described from the intestine of the freshwater thorny catfish Pterodoras granulosus (Valenciennes) (Doradidae, Siluriformes) from Amazonia (Manaus), Brazil. It is characterised mainly by the smooth, almost rounded tail tip in both sexes, the length of the spicules (0.952–1.183 mm) and by the number and arrangement of the caudal papillae (24–34 pre-anal, 1 adanal and 5 postanal pairs and 1 median pre-anal papilla) in the male. It is the first Raphidascaroides species described from South America and the second species of this genus reported from a freshwater fish.

Plant Nematodes in the Bergplaas Plantation, Western Cape Province with a Description of a NewCriconemaSpecies and Notes on Two Known Species of Criconematidae

SYNOPSIS During a survey of plant-parasitic nematodes in the Bergplaas Plantation, Western Cape Province, one Acacia melanoxylon compartment, seven Pinus compartments and twenty-two pockets of indigenous forest and virgin veld were sampled. Criconema, Rotylenchus and Scutellonema species were found at most of the localities whereas Helicotylenchus, Hemicycliophora, Meloidogyne, Ogma, Paralongidorus, Paratylenchus, Rotylenchulus, Trichodorus and Xiphinema species were found at fewer localities. The genera Criconemella, Meloinema, Mesocriconema, Paratrichodorus and Pratylenchus were found at single localities only. Criconema simplex sp. n., collected around natural vegetation is described. Travassosnema travassosi paranaensissubsp. n. and first description of the female ofGuyanema raphiodoniMoravec, Kohn and Fernandes, 1993 (Nematoda : Guyanemidae), Dracunculoid parasites of characid fishes in Brazil

A new nematode subspecies, Travassosnema travassosi paranaensis subsp. n., is described from the body cavity of the characid fish Acestrorhynchus lacustris from the Parana River near Guaira in southern Brazil. It differs from the nominotypical subspecies T. travassosi travassosi Costa, Moreira and Oliveira, 1991 in smaller body (male and gravid female 1.6 and 2.9-3.5 mm long, respectively), rounded tail tip in female, and different number of pairs of caudal papillae in male (4 preanal and 6 postanal) ; differences in the site of localization in the host’s body and geographical distribution have also been considered. The female of another dracunculoid, Guyanema raphiodoni Moravec, Kohn and Fernandes, 1993, is described for the first time from a specimen collected from the intestine of the characid Raphiodon vulpinus originating from the type locality (the water reservoir of the hydroelectric power station of Itaipu-Foz do Iguacu, Parana R. basin).

Rhabdochona rotundicaudatum n.sp. and a redescription of R. cascadilla Wigdor, 1918 (Nematoda: Thelazioidea) from minnows in southern Ontario, Canada

Rhabdochona rotundicaudatum n.sp. is described from hornyhead chub (Nocomis biguttatus (Kirtland, 1841)), and a redescription of R. cascadilla Wigdor, 1918 from common shiner (Notropis cornutus Mitchill, 1817) is provided. Rhabdochona rotundicaudatum n.sp. most closely resembles Rhabdochona cascadilla, but is distinguished by the size and form of the right spicule and the form of the tail in both sexes. Rhabdochona rotundicaudatum n.sp. has a rounded tail tip whereas R. cascadilla has a pointed tail tip. Females of both species produce ovoidal eggs without filaments or floats. No other Rhabdochona species from North America have both a rounded tail tip and smooth eggs. Adult R. rotundicaudatum n.sp. were also recovered from a mayfly (Ephemeroptera). The occurrence of an adult spirurid nematode in an invertebrate is rare; adult spirurids are normally found only in vertebrate (definitive) hosts.

Three New Species of Ditylenchus Filipjev, 1936, and Comments On Basiroides Longimatricalis Kazachenko, 1975 (Nematoda: Anguinidae)

Ditylenchus australiae sp. n. from Australia has six incisures, a strongly developed oesophageal bulb, stylet 9-10 μm, short posterior uterine sac and minutely rounded tail tip. D. exilis sp. n. from Poland has a very thin body, four incisures, elongated oesophageal bulb, stylet 6-8 μm with minute knobs, long spermatheca, short posterior uterine sac and rounded tail tip. D. protensus sp. n. from Poland and Karelia, USSR, has a very thin body, six incisures, stylet 6-7 μm, relatively anteriorly located vulva, posterior uterine sac of medium length, spicules 13-14 μm, and sharply pointed tail tip. Basiroides longimatricalis Kazachenko, 1975 is transferred to Ditylenchus as D. longimatricalis (Kazachenko, 1975) comb. n.

Three New Species of Pratylenchus With a Redescription of P. Andinus Lordello, Zamith & Boock, 1961 (Nematoda: Pratylenchidae)

P. andinus is redescribed from one of two species found at the type locality. It has a head with 3 annules, 4 incisures in the lateral field, vulva at 78-81 % and a broadly rounded smooth tail. P. bolivianus n. sp. found on oats and potatoes in Bolivia is a unisexual species with 3 head annules, V at 80-82%, stylet 17-20μm and a subacute, smooth rounded tail. P. wescolagricus n.sp. is described from Cordyline sp. from glasshouses in Scotland. It usually has 4 head annules, V at 79-82%, stylet 17-19μm and a subacute, smooth rounded tail tip; males were not found. P. mediterraneus n.sp. from Israel commonly has males, 3 head annules, vulva at 77-80% and stylet 14-16μm: female tail tip is smooth and broadly rounded to truncate, sometimes notched.
