Mathematical Statistics at the University of Sao Paulo : Mr. W. L. Stevens

MR. W. L. STEVENS has been appointed professor of mathematical statistics in the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Mr. Stevens worked under Prof. R. A. Fisher, at the Galton Laboratory, University College, London, during 1935-41. He then joined the staff of the Statistical Department, Rothamsted Experimental Station, for a few months on urgent war work prior to leaving for Portugal to take up a lectureship in statistics at Coimbra at the request of the British Council and the Foreign Office. In 1944 he returned to Britain and took a post as statistician with Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., Billingham. In 1947 he joined the staff of the Admiralty Statistical Department under Mr. H. L. Seal. He has been chiefly concerned with the development of statistical methods in the fields of biological and agricultural experimentation, and has also made contributions to the methods applicable to quality control of industrial products.

The Soil Fauna: With Special Reference to the Ecosystem of Forest Soil

The work recorded here was originally undertaken to meet one of the requirements for a B.A. in Forestry at Oxford. As first conceived, the work covered a much larger field than the present article, though in less detail, and included experimental work carried out with Ladell's apparatus (Ladell, I936) very kindly lent by Dr C. B. Williams of Rothamsted Experimental Station. Owing to unexpected circumstances it was found possible to continue the work after the completion of the degree course. I owe much during this further period of work to the ever-ready help and encouragement of Mr Charles Elton, Prof. H. G. Champion and Dr R. N. Chrystal. I am also extremely indebted to Dr B. M. Hobby for checking back to original sources nearly all my references, after my departure from England. The first section of this paper is intended as a comprehensive review of the methods so far used in sampling the soil population quantitatively, together with methods from other fields which have obvious application to the study of the soil fauna. The second part, however, makes no pretence at completehess; rather it is a collection of ideas brought together from diverse sources in an attempt to envisage the interrelations of plant and animal in the soil. The role of the animals is stressed and considered in particular relation to the two temperate soil types, podsol and Brown Forest Soil. No attempt has been made to catalogue the soil animals and discuss their effects on the soil group by group, as this aspect of the work has already been adequately treated in the papers of Taylor (1930, 1935) and Jacot (I940). The bibliography covers a much wider field than does the text, and though no claim is made for more than an introduction to such fields as agricultural pests and mycorrhiza, the relation of soil animals to forest soils and the methods of assessing the soil population are covered as completely as possible.

Twenty-fifth Anniversary of the Genetical Society

AT its annual meeting on July 21 the Genetical Society completed the twenty-fifth year of its activity. A gathering was called on June 25, 1919, under the chairmanship of William Bateson, at which it Was agreed to found the Society, and the first meeting was held on July 12 of that year. The original list comprised eighty-seven members, and the first president was Mr. A. J. (later Lord) Balfour, who held office until 1930. The Society's eighty-two meetings have been mainly devoted to communications on fundamental genetics, including also addresses by such foreign visitors as Drs. T. H. Morgan, H. J. Muller, A. H. Sturtevant, C. B. Bridges, R. Goldsehmidt and Ø. Winge. Interest has, however, not been confined to this narrower field, but, as Bateson intended, has also covered plant and animal breeding, human and medical genetics and, of course, cytology and evolutionary theory. Visits have been made on a number of occasions to plant and animal breeding centres and exhibitions, as well as to Kew Gardens, East Malling and Rothamsted Research Stations, the Lister Institute and the Gardens of the Zoological Society. Joint meetings have been held with the Society for Experimental Biology and the Entomological Society, and doubtless this kind of activity will increase in the future as the applications of genetics become more widely appreciated. The Society also sponsored the Seventh International Congress of Genetics held at Edinburgh in 1939.

The penetration of pyrethrum through the cuticle of the tick, Ornithodorus moubata Murray (Argasidae)

1. Experiments are described in which various concentrations of pyrethrum in oil are tested for speed of stimulation of Ornithodorus larvae. There is a logarithmic relation between concentration and speed of stimulation, except with concentrated solutions (stronger than 0·015% by weight of pyrethrin I) in which there is a relative retardation of response.2. As larvae grow older they respond more slowly, and this is probably due to an increase in thickness of the cuticle in natural growth.3. Mineral oils induce much swifter penetration of the pyrethrum than any of the vegetable oils tested.My thanks are due to Prof. Buxton in whose department the work was done, and also, to Dr J. T. Martin of Rothamsted Experimental Station, who kindly analysed samples of Pyremist ‘L’ for pyrethrin I.

Greenkeeping Matters and the Gall Midge of Grasses

THE Board of Greenkeeping Research has adapted its research station at St. Ives, Bingley, Yorks., to war-time conditions. Some of its new activities have already been mentioned in these pages, and the first war-time number of the Board's Journal of Green-keeping Research (6, No. 21, from the Director, price 3s. 9d. per copy post paid) contains a number of short papers which deal further with the altered needs of the present time. The Station's director, Mr. R. B. Dawson, outlines the general war-time policy of linking golf grounds with food production so far as possible, and Mr. R. B. Ferro describes “War-time Turf Policy” from the point of view of minimal attention without permanent damage. There is a very useful survey of gall midge damage to grass seed by Mr. H. F. Barnes of Rothamsted Experimental Station. Many species, mostly of the genera Dasyneura and Contarinia, are shown to have specialized relations with a number of separate grass hosts. The damage done to seed plots must be very great, but seedsmen are now willing to pay more attention to their crops. Mr. Barnes considers the possibility of biological control through the selection of early or late maturing strains of the various host grasses to avoid the period of egg-laying. The present number of the Journal also contains notes and abstracts of a number of papers and matters of interest to those who have to deal with grassland.

Institute of Brewing Researches

SIR GILBERT MORGAN, director of chemical research in the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, has been appointed chairman of the Research Fund Committee of the Institute of Brewing. For many years the Institute has been carrying out researches covering a wide range chiefly in connexion with the raw materials of brewing, namely, barley, hops and yeast, which have been carried out in collaboration with numerous experts and with the following institutions, namely, East Mailing Research Station (East Mailing), Imperial Council for Agricultural Research (India), Municipal College of Technology (Manchester), National Institute of Agricultural Botany (Cambridge), Rotham-sted Experimental Station (Harpenden), South-Eastern Agricultural College (Wye) ; and in the University of Birmingham. The offices of the Institute are at Brewers' Hall, Addle Street, London, E.C.2. It will be recalled that Sir Gilbert's impending retirement from his post under the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research was recently announced (see NATURE, July 30, p. 200).

DURING the forthcoming winter, Mr. H. V. Garner, the guide demonstrator of the Rothamsted Experimental Station, and other members of the staff, will be available for lectures on the Rothamsted experiments to agricultural societies and similar bodies. All communications regarding lectures should be addressed to the Secretary, Rothamsted Experimental Station, Harpenden, Herts.

Royal Meteorological Society: Phenological Studies

THE Royal Meteorological Society has circulated its 500 odd phenological observers in the British Isles a description of a new organization for phenological-ecological research, so that the observations will have an increased specialized value for the various subjects undertaken. The organization consists of the Royal Meteorological Society, Royal Entomological Society, British Ecological Society, South-Eastern Union of Scientific Societies, the Natural History Museum, Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Bureau of Animal Population, Rothamsted Experimental Station, Society for British Entomology, British Ornithologists' Union and the British Trust for Ornithology. An executive committee will have power to co-opt additional specialists and set up panels to deal with separate branches of observational work, as migration, etc. It is hoped to explore locally as well as nationally the possibility of further collaboration of botanist, ornithologist and entomolegist for the more accurate observation of the different subjects under identical climatic conditions. H. Fairfield Smith, of the Galton Laboratory, University College, London, also makes his report of the preliminary statistical investigation of the flowering dates of plant records in the Phonological Reports of the Royal Meteorological Society (Quart. J. Roy. Met. Soc., Jan. 1938) showing the standard deviations in restricted localities appear to be about 5–7 days for late spring and summer plants, rising to 13 days for early spring and autumn flowering plants. The country-wise standard deviation of locality means for hazel and hawthorn in 1933 was about 4–5 days, and regression of flowering date on altitude about 1 ·3 days per 100 feet. Temperature appears to be the dominating meteorological factor determining flower dates, which vary within a locality as a function of climatic as well as of individual plant and environmental factors.

Bacon Production

“THE PRODUCTION OF PIGS FOR BACON” formed the subject of the nineteenth of the Rothamsted Conferences (Secretary, Rothamsted Experiment Station, Harpenden. Is. 6d.). Bacon production involves a number of persons, and it is essential that a better understanding between them should be reached if the industry is to be carried on successfully. The papers deal with different practical problems, and are published in full, together with the discussion, in which representatives of all points of view took part. On the production side, Mr. A. E. Law sets out the details of his management and Mr. H. R. Davidson critically examines the present bacon contract, showing that in the matter of belly measurement, conditions imposed in England are more severe than those in Denmark. Dr. J. Hammond discusses the points that constitute good carcase quality in a bacon pig, and Mr. A. E. Marsh gives the curer's point of view. The requirements of the factory are discussed by Mr. J. B. Busby. Although these are fairly well defined, the best way of meeting them is admittedly less definite, and further scientific work is also needed on breeding and feeding problems.

Lectures on the Rothamsted Experiments

DURING the forthcoming winter, Mr. H. V. Garner, the guide demonstrator of the Rothamsted Experimental Station, and other members of the staff are prepared to give lectures to chambers of agriculture and horticulture, agricultural societies, etc., on the Rothamsted experiments. No fee will be charged for the lecturers' services but any association engaging them will be expected to defray their travelling and hotel expenses and to make such arrangements for the lecturers as may be necessary. The following topics are offered by the member of staff indicated: soil micro-organisms (Dr. H. G. Thornton, Dr. Hugh Nicol and Mr. D. W. Cutler), agricultural botany (Dr. Winifred Brenchley), agricultural chemistry (Dr. E. M. Crowther and Dr. H. L. Richardson), soil physics (Dr. B. A. Keen and Dr. R. K. Schofield), entomology (Dr. C. B. Williams, Dr. H. F. Barnes and Mr. D. M. T. Morland), plant pathology (Dr. J. Henderson Smith, Miss M. D. Glynne and Mr. Geoffrey Samuel), fertilisers, manures, etc. (Mr. H. V. Garner). A Potato Research Station

THE establishment of such a station in one of the important potato-growing districts is advocated by Sir John Russell in the foreword to the report of the sixteenth Rothamsted Conference, upon “Problems of Potato Growing”(Harpenden: Rothamsted Experimental Station. 2s.). Sir John concludes that economical production of potatoes necessitates the use of good seed of the most suitable varieties, appropriate schemes of manuring and cultivation, control of insect and fungus pests and of other agencies causing disease, and methods for dealing with excess produce. All these topics are dealt with by expert contributors in this report. The fields of research developed around this homely plant, notably the virus disease problems, show how technical and specialised are the problems raised by this crop, and though the present research and advisory system deals very effectively with them to a point, Sir John concludes that there is room for such a special research station continuously concerned with investigations into the physiology of the potato and the utilisation of the tuber.
