Flow and Performance Characterization of Rotating Detonation Combustor Integrated with Various Convergent Nozzles

In this study, convergent nozzles of various area ratios (ARs) are used downstream of an annular rotating detonation combustor (RDC) to increase the operating pressure and approach sonic conditions at the nozzle throat. Reactant methane and oxygen-enriched air (67% O2 and 33% N2 by volume) are supplied in counterflow arrangement from two separate plenums located at the base of the RDC annulus. Based on experimentation, a total mass flow rate of 0.32 kg/s was chosen to achieve stable, single-wave mode RDC operation for all test cases, allowing for one-to-one comparisons. The internal performance of the RDC was characterized by ion probes and pressure measurements (wall static and oscillating) in supply plenums and across different axial locations of the combustor. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) at 100 kHz was utilized to measure axial and circumferential velocity components within a two-dimensional region of interest located downstream of the converging nozzle exit. Results show higher internal performance of the RDC with increasing AR of the convergent nozzle. PIV measurement illustrated that the flow oscillation amplitudes decrease with an increasing AR of the converging nozzle. The exit flow contained significant nonuniformity and unsteadiness even with a converging nozzle of AR 2.0, indicating incomplete choking of the flow at the nozzle throat.

Continuous Injector Geometry Variation to Augment Rotating Detonation Combustor Operation and Performance

Sensitivity of rotating detonation combustor operation and performance to oxidizer injector pressure drop was characterized using continuous variation of the injector area during combustor operation. As the oxidizer injector area was both increased and decreased, the sensitivity of the combustion process to varying injector pressure drop was characterized using high-frequency measurements of pressure and chemiluminescence intensity. Detonation wave strength and coherence were characterized using peak-to-peak intensity and power fraction calculated from point-chemiluminescence measurements. Propulsive performance of the combustor was evaluated using thrust and equivalent available pressure, relating them back to reactant supply pressures for assessment of combustor pressure gain. Pressure gain increased during a test as the oxidizer injector area was increased and the corresponding manifold pressure was decreased. At larger injector areas, pressure gain decreased as the operating mode of the combustor transitioned from detonation to deflagration, concomitant with a reduction of gross thrust. Modeling of injector recovery time revealed that the injector operated in both choked and unchoked regimes, which was used to explain detonation wave number transitions in the experiment. A broadened range of detonative operability enabled by active variation of combustor geometry resulted in higher performance with a lower injector pressure drop.

On the wave propagation modes and operation range in rotating detonation combustor with varied injection and outlet throat

The rotating detonation combustor (RDC) has received remarkable attention in the aerospace community. In this work, an experimental RDC model supplied by liquid kerosene and oxygen-enriched air is established. A parametric survey is performed with different injection throats, outlet restrictions, and equivalence ratios to analyze the rotating detonation wave propagation modes comprehensively. Dynamic pressure transducers and a high-speed camera are both employed to identify wave modes synchronously. Overall, the propagation modes are found to be highly dependent on the injection throat and combustor outlet restriction. With a large injection to annulus area ratio of 0.3, a single-wave mode is characterized when no restriction is added at the combustor outlet. Reducing the outlet area leads to a decrease in the wave frequency and a narrower steady rotating detonation propagation regime. The propagation stability of the rotating detonation is strengthened when the injection to annulus area ratio decreases to 0.2. A dual-wave collision mode and a four-wave collision mode are observed, depending on the outlet restriction. A preliminary stable RDC operation range correlated with outlet to injection throat area ratio and equivalence ratio is achieved. Furthermore, an interval value of the outlet to injection throat area ratio is proposed to reach the potential positive total pressure gain. These findings should serve as the reference for RDC configuration design in air-breathing and gas-turbine propulsion systems.

Influence of propagation direction on operation performance of rotating detonation combustor with turbine guide vane

Due to the pressure gain combustion characteristics, the rotating detonation combustor (RDC) can enhance thermodynamic cycle efficiency. Therefore, the performance of gas-turbine engine can be further improved with this combustion technology. In the present study, the RDC operation performance with a turbine guide vane (TGV) is experimentally investigated. Hydrogen and air are used as propellants while hydrogen and air mass flow rate are about 16.1 g/s and 500 g/s and the equivalence ratio is about 1.0. A pre-detonator is used to ignite the mixture. High-frequency dynamic pressure transducers and silicon pressure sensors are employed to measure pressure oscillations and static pressure in the combustion chamber. The experimental results show that the steady propagation of rotating detonation wave (RDW) is observed in the combustion chamber and the mean propagation velocity is above 1650 m/s, reaching over 84% of theoretical Chapman-Jouguet detonation velocity. Clockwise and counterclockwise propagation directions of RDW are obtained. For clockwise propagation direction, the static pressure is about 15% higher in the combustor compared with counterclockwise propagation direction, but the RDW dominant frequency is lower. When the oblique shock wave propagates across the TGV, the pressure oscillations reduces significantly. In addition, as the detonation products flow through the TGV, the static pressure drops up to 32% and 43% for clockwise and counterclockwise propagation process respectively.

Effect of inlet and outlet boundary conditions on rotating detonation combustion

In this work, the effect of different injector geometries and different outlet restrictions on the operating modes of a hydrogen-air Rotating Detonation Combustor (RDC) is investigated. The different operating modes are identified based on pressure measurements in the combustor annulus and the reactant supply, combined with high-speed video from the aft end of the combustor. The pressure frequency spectra are analyzed to determine the global operating mode in terms of number, direction, and speed of waves. The results explore the ability of the RDC to establish rotating, counter-rotating, and longitudinal waves, as well as their superpositions. A good agreement between longitudinal modes and the acoustic resonance frequencies of the RDC annulus was found. Overall, operation was found to be highly injector and outlet restriction dependent. Adding an outlet restriction helped to suppress counter-rotating waves, which is a prerequisite to stabilize single detonation waves. However, it was also shown to prompt high frequency pulsed operation. Apart from the total reactant supply pressure, the relative strength of the injectors was identified as a key factor for stable RDC operation. Pressure feedback into the reactant supply was observed to be dependent on the reactant supply pressure and the RDC operating mode. The study further revealed the presence of transverse resonance modes in the fuel plenum, however these oscillations were weak relative to the injector pressures and do not appear to influence the combustion.

Measuring Rotating Detonation Combustion Using Cross-Correlation

The cyclic propagation of detonation waves in the Rotating Detonation Combustor (RDC) make it an ideal candidate for using the cross-correlation technique. However, the potential for complicated operating modes combined with difficult diagnostic access introduces the possibility for ambiguous outcomes of the analysis. This work will first consider the specific details of the application of the technique to analyzing the features of RDC operation, including wave speed, direction, and operating mode. The accuracy and limitations of the technique will be quantified from a theoretical perspective. The second half of the work will focus on several example run conditions and operating modes in the RDC and will highlight differences in the analysis of variable combustion modes. From these cases studies, it is clear that a great deal of insight on the operation can be gleaned from analyzing the correlation. However, care must be taken in the experimental setup and analysis as a poorly designed approach can easily yield deceptive results. Finally, guidelines for preparing the experiment and conducting the analysis are provided to improve the quality of the results.

Longitudinal pulsed detonation instability in a rotating detonation combustor

The peculiar phenomenon of longitudinal pulsed detonation (LPD) in a rotating detonation combustor (RDC) is studied using hydrogen–air mixtures, by utilizing: (i) two air injection schemes having different inlet areas, and (ii) a convergent nozzle assembly with different spacers that affixes to the RDC exit. By varying the air injection pressure ratio and the backpressure, the regime of occurrence and the mechanism of this pulsed detonation instability are investigated. Immense evidence to suggest that LPD is caused by a peculiar detonation initiation mechanism enabled by a reflected shock wave from the RDC exit is discovered through an ensemble axial pressure profile analysis. Distance–time plots show that a single cycle of the pulsed detonation has two components: a fast-moving axial forward decaying detonation wave (with 75% of the ideal detonation speed) and a slower reflected detached shock wave (with 30% of the ideal speed). When the weak reflected wave comes in contact with the fresh reactants at the RDC headwall, another strong axial detonation is produced, thereby continuing the cycle without external ignition. LPD is also found to have three diverse facets, namely, inception, sustenance and operating frequency. For similar backpressures, the two air injection schemes have completely different operating regimes, leading to the inference that while backpressure is necessary for the onset of the pulsed detonation instability, by virtue of enabling reflected shock waves from the exit, lower air injection pressure ratio dictates the sustenance of the instability. A narrow band of injection pressure ratios, between 1.4 and 1.85, under back-pressurized RDC operation has high proclivity to produce sustained periodic longitudinal pulsed detonations in the combustor. Above this range, stable rotating detonation is preferred, and below this range, the operation is distinguished by the mixed presence of both rotating and pulsed detonations for a given test point, finally breaking down into chaotic instability for lower pressure ratios. The frequency of the pulsed detonation operation is found to depend on the initial combustor pressure and equivalence ratio, with higher frequency observed with an increase in backpressure and equivalence ratio.

Investigation of rotating detonation combustor operation with H2-Air mixtures

The operating range and wave speed performance of a Rotating Detonation Combustor (RDC) is characterized for hydrogen-air mixtures for three fuel injection schemes and two air injection schemes. The fuel injection scheme is altered by changing the total number of injection orifices and the individual orifice area, while maintaining the same fuel mass flux across the three schemes. The operability, performance and combustion-induced pressure rise due to the addition of a back-pressurizing convergent nozzle is also characterized. While the operating range is largely unaffected by changes in the length-to-diameter ratio of the fuel injector orifices, higher length-to-diameter ratios correspond to a lower number of transitional RDC operation where there is a sudden abatement of the continuously propagating detonation wave, once established inside the combustor. Increased air injection area diminishes the operability, while producing high stochasticity in the performance of the RDC. The length-to-diameter ratio of the fuel orifices has a significant impact on the number of detonation waves that can exist in the chamber. For the highest length-to-diameter ratio of the fuel orifices, and at the highest air flow rates, the RDC supports multiple detonation waves inside the chamber. Without the convergent nozzle attachment, 80% of Chapman–Jouguet (C–J) detonation speed is achieved for all three fuel injection schemes. C–J detonation wave speed is achieved in the annulus when the RDC is back-pressurized using the nozzle. The ratio of reactant fill-height to the detonation cell-width tapers at the lean and rich operating conditions, while peaking at an equivalence ratio of around 1.2. The detonation-induced static pressure rise produced in the RDC is found to be dependent on the air flow rate and the equivalence ratio of the reactants.

Characterization of instabilities in a Rotating Detonation Combustor

Rotating Detonation Combustor (RDC) operation is investigated under different air and fuel flow rates, and varied geometries to reveal four fundamentally different instabilities. Select test points are chosen to study these instabilities using qualitative and quantitative tools. First, for RDC operation at lean limits, or with subsonic air injection, or with large fuel injection orifices, the detonation wave inside the combustor undergoes aperiodic chaotic propagation around the combustor annulus characterized by incoherent pressure-time traces. The high incoherence in recorded pressure, along with the considerable variation in subsequent pressure peaks suggests numerous failure and re-initiation of the detonation wave. Second, almost all operating points at the variety of conditions tested exhibit some degree of low frequency sinusoidal oscillations characterized by periodic waxing and waning of subsequent detonation peak pressures. It occurs between 200 Hz and 500 Hz for the operating maps studied. Third, the phenomenon of mode switching in the RDC is also defined as instability since the sudden change in the number of detonation waves existing in the combustor is temporally unpredictable, and often unpredictable for a given geometry. It is found that RDC operation is more stable when there are multiple detonation waves inside the chamber. With a back-pressurizing convergent nozzle, at certain operating points, the RDC exhibits axisymmetric pulsed operation like the Pulsed Detonation Combustor (PDC). There is significant evidence to suggest that these longitudinal pulsed detonations (LPD) are manifested due to shock-reflection from the RDC exit followed by a subsequent shock-initiation of the fresh reactants. The frequency of this instability is around 3.8 kHz for the test case investigated.

Analysis of air inlet and fuel plenum behavior in a rotating detonation combustor

The behavior of the oxidizer inlet and the fuel injection plenums during the operation of a Rotating Detonation Combustor (RDC) is studied using pressure sensors in the air injection gap, the fuel plenum, and in the combustor. Significant pressure feedback from the rotating detonation wave is observed in the air injection gap. Pressure feedback into the fuel plenum is relatively weaker. The average normalized cross-correlation between the pressure–time series in the air injection gap and within the combustor is greater than 0.3. The air injection gap has a considerable base sinusoidal oscillation in the same frequency range as a previously discovered waxing-and-waning instability in the combustor. The fundamental frequency in the air injection gap is the same as the RDC operation frequency for almost all test cases, indicating the high efficacy of the sensors in the air inlet to attain the operating frequency. Frequency analysis reveals notable spatial variation in the fuel plenum dynamics. The low frequency oscillation in the air injection gap is found to be constant at 235 (±2.5) Hz for all the air flow rates and equivalence ratios tested.
