A study on a rotary sliding vane compressor. (1st report. Numerical analysis of the vane's force).

The establishment of a design method of a rotary vane compressor for an automotive air conditioner is described. When the suction pressure is high. The detachment of the vane from the cylinder wall occurs under a particular condition. In order to avoid this phenomenon, the authors have been performed many experiments. However, the experimental studies requise much time and cost. Accordingly, a numerical simulation is available for solving this problem. The method and result of a computer simulation for the force acting on the vane is described in this paper.

Finite element flow analysis in the narrow gap between the rotor and side plate of a rotary vane compressor.

The flow in the narrow gap between the rotor and side plate of a rotary vane compressor with nonaxisymmetric boundary conditions is studied. The pressure, velocity and temperature distributions in a flow field are calculated by the Finite Element Method. For the steady-state solution of temperature distribution, Matsuda's Implicit Time Marching Method is employed. The results of this investigation indicate the possibility of simplified development and design of this type compressor.

Capacity self controllable rotary type compressers for automotive air conditioners. 4th report Volumetric efficiency of vane rotary type.

This report describes a method for making accurate theoretical predictions of the absolute value of the volumetric efficiency of vane rotary type compressors used in automotive air conditioners. Considering in detail internal leakage, heat transfer and the step variation in the suction passage leads to the basic equations of the suction process. We have performed experiments on the 3 vane rotary (2 ports suction method) reviewed as the capacity self controllable type in the former report (2nd Report) and compared this with the result of theoretical analysis based on the above basic equations. With a revolution speed between 1000 and 3000 rpm, a compression ratio between 3.47 and 6.02 and volumetric efficiency between 50 and 80%, the results showed a good correspondence, with an accuracy of 2∼3% between the theoretical and experimental value.

Pressure oscillations during re-expansion of gases in rotary vane compressors by a modified Helmholtz resonator approach

This paper describes a mathematical model in which some assumptions of the Helmholtz resonator theory are used, but extended to large pressure amplitudes. The model is verified by simple experiments and applied to the study of re-expansion oscillations that occur in rotary vane compressors.

Nonaxisymmetric Flow in the Narrow Gap Between a Rotating and a Stationary Disk

The flow between a rotating disk and a stationary disk, with nonaxisymmetric boundary conditions is studied. A flow field of this type exists in the narrow gap between the rotor and side plates of a rotary vane compressor. Fluid is admitted into the gap in the center of the disk for the purpose of sealing against leakage due to the nonaxisymmetric pressure distribution externally imposed on the disk circumference. The flow is solved analytically by a perturbation technique. Flow maps and pressure maps are obtained for various operating conditions. The effectiveness of the fluid seal is evaluated for these conditions by calculating the flow rates that pass through the gap. The flow field is simulated on a test apparatus and experimental verification is given to the analytical results. The results obtained indicate the possibility of appreciably reducing the leakage through the gap by a proper selection of the fluid pressure and the disk geometry.

Paper 17: Pressure–Volume Diagrams for Sliding Vane Rotary Compressors

Pressure–volume diagrams, usually associated with reciprocating machines, are valuable both as a means of investigating performance and in providing information for further design work. This paper describes the main features of a method for compiling rotor cell pressure–volume diagrams for sliding vane rotary compressors. Diagrams obtained for various compressor operating conditions are given and discussed.

Design Control of Overcompression in Rotary-Vane Compressors

In its simplest terms, the design of a rotary-vane compressor of a given displacement consists of selecting a particular combination of rotor and cylinder radius, cylinder length, and number of vanes. A study of the rotary-vane compressor has shown that the choice is not entirely arbitrary since thermodynamic and mechanical losses occurring in the compressor are intimately associated with these basic dimensions. One of the more important of these geometrically dependent losses was found to be potentially severe overcompression during the discharge process. In this paper, an equation is developed that describes in generalized form the relation of overcompression to the dimensions of the compressor. This equation is used to evolve an energy-loss criterion for design control of this loss. An example of the application of the criterion to a refrigeration compressor is included.
