Poverty, political freedom, and the roots of terrorism in developing countries: An empirical assessment

We find that political freedom has a significant and non-linear effect on domestic terrorism, but has no statistically significant effect on transnational terrorism. Geography and fractionalization limit a country’s ability to curb terrorism, while strong legal institutions deter terrorism.

Cross Border Terrorism: Jurisdictional and Other Issues

Terrorism in no longer confined to a territory or to a few isolated activities, rather it has surpassed all barriers and gained an international description. To check the menace and protect the innocent population various regional and global conventions have been ratified. However the roots of terrorism seems to be all the more penetrating into the heart of the civilization and is emerging to be the greatest threat to peaceful co-existence. The criminal record sharing model developed by the EU-US, principle of universal jurisdiction and the exercise of extraterritorial jurisdiction has in the recent past been thrown open for debates by policy makers. The international community is trying its level best to strike the chord of harmony between the various elements to maintain peace & prosperity. Perhaps it’s the blend of all the counter measures coupled with identification and prevention of causes that lead to terrorism, is the need of the hour.

In the article, different reasons for the long-lasting war against international terrorism under the Islamist banner are analysed. Notwithstanding the "Al-Qaeda's" weakening, since autumn 2001, many new groups have sprung up threatening the international security. Till now, the war has been waged only against terrorists, but no serious attention has been paid to neutralization of radical Islamism as an ideology causing terrorism. In connection with the military actions in Iraq and Afghanistan, anti-western feelings have been growing up breeding radical Islamism. It is emphasized in the article that the antiterrorist coalition in its present state is unable to fulfill its mission. It can become really efficient only if Muslim régimes would increase their input into the common struggle. Standing on the ground of traditional Islam they could easier curb Islamism and thus cut the roots of terrorism.

Rethinking the Roots of Terrorism: Beyond Orthodox Terrorism Theory—A Critical Research Agenda*

The orthodox understanding of terrorism does not seem to provide adequate means for explaining the root causes of terrorism. This study is an attempt to critically rethink the roots of terrorism by relocating the study of terrorism into a conceptual space in which it can gain access to the tools provided by conflict studies. As a result this work addresses a gap in the field of terrorism studies and provides an explanation and clarification of the existence of orthodox terrorism discourse and the creation of an alternative theoretical framework for rethinking the roots of terrorism. *This article builds on a wider study of terrorism that has been published as a monograph by Palgrave Macmillan. REGIONAL UNDERDEVELOPMENT AND TERRORISM: THE CASE OF SOUTH EASTERN TURKEY

This article investigates the possible role of the regional underdevelopment of South Eastern Turkey in the ensuing terrorism in the country. The article also aims at making a contribution towards a better understanding of some economic conditions that are related to terrorism. For this purpose, a novel approach to the examination of the roots of terrorism has been followed. First, we run Principal Components Analysis on total GDP and its components in South Eastern Turkey in order to reduce the number of potential explanatory variables. Second, we use the first three components in a logit regression where the dependent variable consists of an index of terrorist attacks. The results of the analysis have revealed that total GDP is helpful in explaining terrorism in Turkey. Furthermore, we find evidence that agriculture and government services are more important components of GDP in explaining terrorism than factors such as trade, construction, manufacturing and transportation.

In contrast with the previous literature on this subject, which focuses on transnational terrorism only, I use a new measure of terrorism that encompasses both domestic and transnational terrorism. In line with the results of some recent studies, this article shows that terrorist risk is not significantly higher for poorer countries, once the effects of other country-specific characteristics such as the level of political freedom are taken into account. Political freedom is shown to explain terrorism, but it does so in a non-monotonic way: countries in some intermediate range of political freedom are shown to be more prone to terrorism than countries with high levels of political freedom or countries with highly authoritarian regimes. This result suggests that, as experienced recently in Iraq and previously in Spain and Russia, transitions from an authoritarian regime to a democracy may be accompanied by temporary increases in terrorism. Finally, the results suggest that geographic factors are important to sustain terrorist activities.
