Tripolitania, Hadd Hajar

Mr. Peter Holmes was able to return to photograph the wall in the Gebel south-west of Asabaa, called Hadd Hajar, mentioned in the Society's Second Annual Report, 1970–1, p. 11. Pl. VIII shows one of his photographs. In the foreground is Ras at-Tays al-Abyad, and the main wall below, which runs for 6 km. to Ras Sa'id. A small quantity of pottery found by the watch-tower was clearly Roman, and included an amphora rim and small pieces of late Roman lamp. 2½ km. south of Hadd Hajar near its south-west end another watch-tower was found on Ras at-Tays al-Aswad.

Ingres, — the famous Painter, — had gathered in his Collection a lot of roman lamps, which are at present time in the Montauban Museum. This Collection is composed also of several mouldings, — made by the Artist himself, — from certain lamp-medallions. In fact, such documents are interesting, because a comparison is possible between some specific characters of their composition and certain types of painted figurations of Ingres, such as various details in hair-representations, for instance. For Ingres the interest and the attractive character are lying in the artistic aspect of the figuration and one may observe, — in a same series of documents, — variations about the same theme. 142 photographic reproductions are illustrating the analytic study and the descriptive catalogue of the documents considered.

Such a residence has recently been given to the City Hospital of Akron, Ohio, by Mr. and Mrs. Harvey S. Firestone. On the bronze tablet which acknowledges the gift, appears the Roman lamp symbolic of nursing and associated with Florence Nightingale. The design on the tablet was taken from the one appearing on the cover of the American Journal of Nursing.
