For the people in their environment, they can be disasters, sometimes with truly terrible effects. For scientists, often geophysicists who observe the interactions on the planet, they may bring exciting new measurements and insights. The Hunga Tonga‐Hunga Ha’apai (HTHH) eruption was just such an event. It was the largest underwater eruption since 1883, when the Indonesian volcano Krakatoa produced a tsunami that killed more than 20,000 people, and the pressure wave that was heard (or measured) around the world.
