The role of Zakat and Fitrah in improving Community Welfare: A Case Study of Baznas Garut Regency

Zakat has great potential to improve the welfare of people in Indonesia, including in Garut Regency. The professional and accountable management of zakat by the National Zakat Agency (BAZNAS) of Garut Regency is expected to encourage an increase in the economic welfare of the community. However, the performance of BAZNAS Garut in this case is not optimal, so the impact on improving public welfare is also not optimal. This gives rise to a critical perspective in society. This study aims to analyze the governance, distribution system, and the impact of Zakat mal and Zakat fitrah distributed BAZNAS Garut in improving the economic welfare of the community. The method used is descriptive analysis with empirical juridical approach and graphic simulation. The results showed that: 1) conceptually and empirically, zakat can increase economic growth and welfare; 2) distribution of zakat Mal BAZNAS Garut consists of consumptive and productive programs; 3) zakat mal has a positive impact on improving economic welfare; and 4) zakat al-Fitr also has a positive impact on improving the economic welfare of the community. However, this study concludes that the management of zakat by BAZNAS Garut is not optimal, so it is necessary to improve performance to realize better welfare.

Optimalisasi Dana Zakat Untuk Mengatasi Masalah Kemiskinan di Indonesia

The purpose of this research is to unravel how zakat can be a solution to solve the problem of poverty in Indonesia. In this study, a qualitative approach is used with library research. The result of this article is that the potential of zakat is a solution to answer the problem of poverty in Indonesia, due to the large number of Islamic populations. The role of zakat in alleviating poverty is wealth redistribution, economic empowerment, access to health and education, assistance for vulnerable groups, overcoming humanitarian crises, and improving living standards.

Implementation of Zakat Law in Empowering the Islamic Community's Economy in Indonesia

This research investigates the implementation of Zakat law in Indonesia and its implications for empowering the Islamic community's economy. Zakat, an obligatory form of almsgiving in Islam, holds significant importance in Islamic finance and social welfare systems. The study utilizes qualitative research methods, including interviews, focus groups, and content analysis, to explore the challenges and opportunities in implementing Zakat law and its impact on economic empowerment. Key findings highlight the importance of governance, transparency, and accountability in Zakat administration, as well as the role of Zakat in poverty alleviation, livelihood enhancement, and community development. The study provides actionable recommendations for enhancing the effectiveness of Zakat administration and promoting sustainable economic development within the Islamic framework in Indonesia.

The Role of Waqaf and Zakat as Fiscal Policy Instruments in Indonesia

The role of zakat and waqf is huge in terms of helping the poor in Indonesia as they have many benefits if we implement them. The alternative and strategic solution offered by Islam is none other than a productive and creative zakat management (distribution and utilization) system. With the management as intended, it is hoped that it can empower the poor to become Aghniya (the rich) and make Mustahiq become muzakki. Likewise, waqf has many benefits, especially in terms of helping the poor to improve their welfare. Therefore, this study aims to examine the role of waqf and zakat as instruments of fiscal policy in Indonesia. The research was conducted using qualitative methods and the technique used by researchers was the library research method. The library method is research conducted by reading articles from journals as well as data from the Central Bureau of Statistics and the Indonesian Waqf Board using a literature review. The data used is time series data and the time of this research was between 2019 and 2022. Data sources were obtained from BAZNAS (National Amil Zakat Agency), BPS (Central Statistics Agency), and BWI (Indonesian Waqaf Agency). The results of the study show that waqf and zakat in a country’s macro-economy are very significant as fiscal policy instruments, positive impacts in various fields, especially economic and social in Indonesia, especially in increasing aggregate consumption to increase the country’s income level. Law of The Productive Testicles

The role of zakat as ijtima'iyah Aaliyah worship in Islam focuses on two main functions of zakat, namely cleansing property and souls and being a community fund to reduce poverty. Zakat mal and zakat fitrah were discussed, with emphasis on the need for a productive zakat approach as a long-term solution. The research aims to understand the concept of productive zakat from the perspective of Yusuf Al-Qardhawi and Imam Nawawi, including an understanding of the main purpose of productive zakat in alleviating poverty and improving mustahik welfare. This research uses a documentary-descriptive approach method with literature study, where written data is analyzed based on context. The results showed that the distribution of productive zakat according to Yusuf Al-Qardhawi played an important role in developing the mustahiq economy. The majority of scholars support the concept of productive zakat as a strategy to improve the economic life of Mustahiq. The conclusion of this study underscores the urgency of productive zakat in the context of Islamic teachings and the welfare of the Ummah. The empowerment of Mustahiq through training and skill development is the main focus to increase the effectiveness of productive zakat. Although there is no specific reference in the Qur'an or hadith regarding productive zakat, the allocation of zakat clearly stated in surah At-Tawbah verse 60 provides a basis for the distribution of zakat that supports the economic improvement of Muslims.

The Impact of Islamic Laws on Food Security and Agricultural Development Using Quranic Verses and Hadiths of Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (PBUH)

This article examines the impact of Islamic laws on food security and agricultural development through the use of Quranic verses and the hadiths of Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (PBUH). Food security and agricultural development are critical issues in Islamic societies, where Islamic laws and rulings play a significant role in their improvement. In this study, the concept of food security is first reviewed from the perspectives of international organizations and Islam, followed by an explanation of the importance of agriculture in Islamic teachings, with an emphasis on Quranic verses and the hadiths of Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (PBUH). Additionally, Islamic jurisprudential laws related to agriculture, such as the revival of barren lands and the role of zakat and khums in agricultural development, are discussed. The practical effects of Islamic laws on food security and agriculture are further analyzed by examining successful examples in Islamic countries and reviewing successful policies in this area. Finally, the challenges faced by Islamic societies in the fields of agriculture and food security, as well as practical solutions to improve the current situation, are presented. The findings of this study demonstrate that Islamic laws can play an important role in improving food security and agricultural development, and continued research in this field can contribute to the formulation of more comprehensive and effective policies.

The Role of Zakat in Ensuring Sustainability of Economic Growth and Prosperity Through Decent Work

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a global action plan agreed upon by world leaders, including Indonesia, to end poverty, reduce inequality, and protect the environment by 2030. Eradicating poverty, ending hunger, improving health and education quality are among 17 SDGs. In an Islamic perspective, SDGs are not something new, because Islam already has a zakat instrument for promoting economic welfare and a quality life based on principles of justice. This study aims to empirically measure and analyze the extent to which zakat has played a role in improving the Human Development Index (HDI) in Aceh province. A total of 100 mustahik, who receiving zakat for business working capital distributed by Baitul Mal in Aceh provinces were selected as respondents of the study using purposive sampling technique. Primary data obtained from questionnaires distribution were analyzed using multiple regression technique. Zakat funds for business working capital are believed to have an effective effect on promoting HDI and at the same time support the realization of the achievement of SDGs, particularly the reduction of poverty and hunger, improving the quality of health and education of mustahik. To accelerate the realization of the SDGs, zakat institutions must be managed professionally. The collection of zakat funds to be distributed as working capital for the productive economic activities of the mustahik must be increased.

Zakat As A Stimulus For Creating A Triple Bottom Line In Companies In Indonesia

Triple bottom line focuses the company’s activities on three pillars, namely economic, social, and environmental. This study aims to explain the implementation of zakat in Indonesia as a stimulus function for the implementation of the triple bottom line in companies. Departing from the many problems in Indonesia the implementation of zakat in Indonesia has not been maximally carried out by companies based on the potential of existing companies. The method use in the research is qualitative descriptive with a literature study approach. The findings of this study state that the role of zakat as a triple-bottom-line stimulus can be carried out by starting with efforts ton increase profits through maximum zakat targets. Then proceed with the distribution of zakat in the form of productive zakat as the implementation of social awareness and environmental care. In the case, the role of zakat can function as the axis of the company’s triple bottom line implementation to the fullest.

Analysis of the role of zakat, infaq, shadaqoh and wakaf in the Dompet Dhuafa institution, East Java as an effort to alleviate poverty in the community

Purpose – This research was conducted because poverty and income inequality are still one of the problems that are often faced by the Indonesian people. Where poperty in question is one of the problems of the Indonesian nation which is very important, especially when there is a sharing of condominiums such as the global crisis which mainly affects food and an energy crisis. One of the things wer can see is the bgigh price of oil which will have an impact on poperty, especially in Indonesian. The formulation of the problem in this study is how the role of zakat, infaq and sadakah as a solution in alleviating poverty. The purpose of this study is that we can find out how the role of zakat, infaq and sadakah in alleviating poverty Method – The type of research that the author uses is descriptive qualitative. While data collection from this research is by way of observation and interviews Results – The results of this study indicate that the existence of zakat, infaq and sadakah can be used as a solution in alleviating poverty and income inequality, it can be seen that the existence of productive zakat programs can help zakat recipients in improving their economy. Limitations – this research has limitations in terms of the number of research informants, further research can expand information from various regions who receive zakat, infaq and hadaqah through dhuafa wallets. Practical Implications – this research is a recommendation for government policy to develop programs through social institutions and zakat institutions in order to reduce poverty.

The role of zakat in economic recovery during and after the Covid-19 pandemic: A case study of Baznas in Indonesia

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the global economy, including Indonesia, which experienced a drastic economic decline. Baznas is expected to contribute to economic recovery through the management and distribution of zakat, infāq, and ṣadaqah (ZIS) funds. This study aims to evaluate the role of Baznas in supporting Indonesia’s economic recovery during and after the Covid-19 pandemic and to analyze the economic recovery methods implemented by Baznas. This research employs a qualitative approach with content analysis and literature review methods. Secondary data were obtained from Baznas activity reports, financial reports, and management reports from 2020 to 2022, sourced from the official Baznas website. The findings indicate that Baznas has effectively managed and distributed ZIS funds to assist communities affected by the pandemic. Various programs, including health, social, economic, and educational assistance, were implemented to mitigate the negative impacts of the pandemic. The distribution of ZIS funds was focused on both consumptive and productive schemes, with a greater emphasis on consumptive schemes during the pandemic. This study demonstrates that zakat, as an Islamic financial instrument, can be a solution to alleviate the economic burden on communities affected by Covid-19.Keywords: Baznas; Covid-19; economic recovery; zakat, infāq, and sadaqah (ZIS).

Role of Zakat and Waqf (Endowment) in Poverty Alleviation: A Solution to Insecurity and Challenges

In this paper the role of Zakat and Waqf will be critically examine to see how these two institutions will help in solving the issue of poverty, hunger, illiteracy and crimes among others that cause insecurity in the society and particularly in Africa. To achieve the objectives, literatures dealing with Zakat and Waqf were scrutinized and discussed. It is realized that Zakat and Waqf as forms of charity in Islam with set rules and regulations which could help in eradicating and alleviating of poverty, hunger, illiteracy, crime, diseases among other socio- economic problems that causes insecurity in the states and nations. Meaning of the institutions were explained and discussed in the paper similarly poverty as a concept is also explained. Over the years, poverty alleviation programmes and policies have evolved by government. The present Nigerian government evolved different forms of poverty alleviation programmes to promote the economic wellbeing and living standard of its people such as the social welfare investment scheme, the trader money or market women loan, home grown feeding and many others. Islam has provided some unique instrument in form of Zakat and Waqf for the alleviation of poverty fighting insecurity among people.

Revisiting Zakat with a distribution of weighted Shapley value

PurposeThis paper aims to extend the Shapley value (SV) into a discussion of Zakat, a Pillar of Islam. Lloyd Shapley was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2012. This study shows that their relationship is significant for all nations, that of levelling up. An important but neglected paper by Datta (1939) showed insights provided by the Power Law, or as it is sometimes called, the Pareto distribution, into the role of Zakat in raising the income of all above the subsistence level. The Pareto distribution describes the prevailing tendency. The SV illustrates the interdependence perspective of Zakat with the Pareto distribution, wealth, income and poverty. Payoffs apply equally to both givers and receivers. For this study’s purposes, payoffs are considered as transferable utilities. They are formed by individuals who willingly cooperate in society rather than atomistic individuals who act independently. Zakat represents the recognition that society needs to be cooperative rather than individualistic; people cooperate in groups or societies to create value. SV implications and axioms are evaluated with an illustration.Design/methodology/approachThis study extends Datta’s approach by introducing distribution weights into the SV. The authors set out the concept of weighted Shapley values that retain the elements of randomness and marginal contribution to a coalition contained in pure/true SVs and weights that follow a ley-Pareto distribution. This paper is a viewpoint work that relies primarily on the author’s qualitative interpretation.FindingsThe findings indicate that individual members of a coalition make multiple contributions that are often unrewarded. The contribution of one member of a coalition is dependent upon the contribution of others. The measure of contributions is payoffs, which have both monetary and non-monetary aspects; transferable payoffs or utilities are usually assumed. Furthermore, the significant agents in society or an organisation are stakeholders rather than the usual categories: managers, staff, shareholders, etc.Practical implicationsContextualising these concepts within the Islamic values and principles that guide Zakat administration is crucial to ensure that the distribution of Zakat funds is fair, equitable and meets the needs of all eligible recipients. By applying these concepts appropriately, Zakat administrators can ensure that the Zakat system functions effectively and fulfils its religious obligation.Originality/valueThe novelty of this paper is that it blends the SV and the idea behind Zakat by introducing the idea of alternatives of Shapley weights. The link between the institution of Zakat and SV in terms of equality, poverty elimination and wealth distribution should be at the top of the research agenda.

Profesionalisme Amil Zakat dalam Meningkatkan Kesejahteraan Umat

Regulations regarding the management of zakat are quite strong in Indonesia and Aceh Province, from laws to qanuns and governor regulations strengthening zakat in improving people's welfare. If the existing zakat regulation is not managed by amil zakat who understand the management and objectives of ZIS, it will degrade the function of zakat in increasing welfare or creating distribution justice in society. Using the mepiris method, this paper describes the role of amil zakat in collecting and distributing zakat to increase the professionalism of amil. The role of zakat, infak, sadaqoh as economic instruments to distribute justice in society which is understood by amil to be the goal in managing zakat and building synergy between institutions that have the same goals will further enhance the role of ZIS, these goals and synergy are built with professional management that will build trust muzaki and mustahik in the management of zakat.

Zakat as an instrument of poverty reduction in Indonesia

PurposeThis study aims to analyze the concept of Zakat as an instrument to increase the economy and poverty eradication in Indonesia.Design/methodology/approachThis study used a qualitative method based on library research sourced from books, financial reports and another previous research.FindingsThe results show that the empowerment programs conducted by Zakat institutions in Indonesia are based on the scale of priorities and the potential of Mustahik. Zakat management considers the level of productivity and long-term impacts that improve Mustahik Economy. Thus, the empowerment programs lead to the reduction of Mustahik living below poverty line.Research limitations/implicationsThis study contributes in two ways: first, it analyzes a model to identify the Mustahik’s potential for the Zakat institution in Indonesia. Second, it encourages the awareness of Muzakki and Mustahik regarding the role of Zakat in the Indonesian economy. This is expected to prompt their level of participation in optimizing the potential of Zakat in Indonesia.Originality/valueGiven the scarce literature that provide qualitative and critical reviews of the implementation Zakat empowerment programs to alleviate poverty conducted by the Zakat institutions in Indonesia, this research can act as a bridge for future research in performing empirical studies regarding the impact of a Zakat empowerment program on society.

Fungsi Zakat sebagai Jaring Pengaman Sosial di Tengah Permasalahan Covid-19 pada Baznas di Kota Palembang

The COVID-19 outbreak poses a big risk to the economy of the city of Palembang, causing social inequality in society. In this case, the role of zakat as a social safety net is very necessary. BAZNAS acts as a forum for distributing zakat muzakki. The government established BAZNAS under the Ministry of Religion. BAZNAS was established in 2001 by Presidential Decree no. 8 of the Republic of Indonesia to implement Law no. 38 of 1999. Zakat can be a solution to optimize public finances during a pandemic, so zakat as a social safety net plays a very important role in improving public finances.

THE ROLE OF INFAQ AND SADAQAH TO IMPROVE COMMUNITY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

In the Indonesian context, the role of zakat, infaq, and shadaqah (collectively known as ZIS) has gained significance in seeking government assistance for the economy. These contributions have the potential to address poverty and improve the overall economic well-being of the people. To effectively utilize the benefits of ZIS, a well-structured management body is essential to oversee the collection and distribution of these charitable funds. This management body should be capable of efficiently and transparently managing the funds, ensuring that contributions are directed towards the right causes and effectively utilized to uplift the community's economy. This study aims to explore the impact of zakat, infaq, and shadaqah in seeking government assistance for the Indonesian economy. The study also highlights the importance of ZIS, which represents a form of love for Allah and can alleviate poverty. Therefore, a competent management body is necessary to oversee zakat, infaq, and alms, ensuring proper management and promoting economic improvement in the community. The methodology employed in this article involves a literature review, which includes collecting relevant articles guided by the researchers. Through the analysis of these articles, the researcher draws conclusions to be presented in this paper.

Economic Development Justice: The Role of Zakat, Infaq, Shadaqah (ZIS) Institutions in the Covid-19 Pandemic Era

In December 2019, the world was rocked by the coronavirus outbreak, the virus first appeared in the Chinese city of Wuhan. The impact of the Covid-19 virus is not only felt in China, but other countries including Indonesia have felt the shock. The impact caused by the corona virus is multidimensional, social, political, educational, as well as health and economic, where to overcome this impact requires good cooperation between the government, the community and ZIS fund management institutions optimally in order to contribute to handling Covid-19. Islamic social finance is very important and beneficial because it helps many people's difficulties. From this, the purpose of this article is to analyze the roles, prospects, opportunities and challenges of ZIS Management Institutions against the Covid-19 pandemic. This research uses qualitative descriptive method, which is research that uses qualitative data and then described descriptively. This study uses secondary data sources, where researchers can obtain data from existing sources, namely websites, journals, newspapers, financial reports, and books. In this study using a literature study instrument that aims to reveal various theories related to the problems studied, literature studies can also be used as input and basis in explaining how the implementation and mechanism of zakat distribution in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic, so that it was found that ZIS institutions play an important role in building economic justice, especially acting as a social safety net.

Peranan Badan Amil Zakat Nasional(Baznas) Kabupaten Pinrang Dalam Menghimpun Zakat Pertanian Di Desa Kaballangang

Zakat has developed as a significant source of state revenue used to help the poor, as well as to advance Islam, science, other fields of study, build infrastructure, and provide other forms of support. The role of zakat is in line with the economic conditions of the poor and of course they still need several types of assistance services, but they are still dealing with the right to access services in order to increase people's prosperity.
 This study aims to find out how the form of collecting zakat, the form of the role of the national amil zakat agency, and what factors influence the collection of zakat. This study uses a qualitative methodology. This method is explained to be able to understand what phenomena the research subject is experiencing, in this case includes actions, motivations, perceptions, behaviors and so on, through verbal and linguistic descriptions, in the unique environment experienced, and by applying various scientific techniques.
 The results of the study show that: (1) The forms of zakat collection include the establishment of zakat collection units, zakat reception counters, opening of bank accounts, consultations about zakat, zakat pick-up programs, infaq, and shadaqah, household donations, teacher donations. These aspects play an important role in increasing the success rate of zakat collection. (2) The role of the national amil zakat agency in Pinrang Regency includes outreach, the zakat utilization program, and the zakat distribution system. (3) The factors that influence the collection of agricultural zakat in Kaballangang Village are internal factors and external factors

ANALYSING WELLBEING USING ISLAMIC INDICATORS: A MULTIDIMENSIONAL PERSPECTIVE

Wellbeing is an important aspect of human life. In consists of various aspects such as material (financial), relational (family) and subjective (psychological). From an Islamic perspective, wellbeing is viewed in various ways. Normally it is based on Maqasid al-Shariah principles. The objective of the present paper is to discuss wellbeing using the five dimensions or principles of Maqasid al-Shariah, namely religiosity, wealth, physical self, posterity and knowledge. Each dimension will be represented by appropriate variables. The cross-section data employs a simple systematic random sampling in of Alor Gajah district with one of the highest scores of Malaysian Wellbeing Index 2016. Descriptive analysis and correlation were undertaken in this quantitative study with a sample size of 160 Muslim household heads. The correlation analysis revealed various relationship between each Maqasid dimensions. Thus, role of zakat in addressing each dimension could be determined. Zakat: changing the framework of giving

PurposeThis paper aims to show that zakat solves the collective action problem by changing the framework of giving. An additional purpose of this paper is an attempt to fill a critical gap in the Islamic economics literature. This gap concerns the nature and role of zakat in effectively delivering aid to those in need while mitigating the potential for free riding. There is also a general gap in the current literature on Islamic economics that the issues of zakat and charity have not received the same attention as the focus remained mostly on money, banking and the issues of interest and usury. The paper is also an attempt to provide a refocus.Design/methodology/approachThis paper attempts to build an argument to show how zakat can function as a unique solution to the free-rider problem in voluntary charity. The author’s argument is based on a precise theoretical framework, namely the “free-rider problem,” and how zakat can function as a unique solution to this problem. The author also uses game theory to show how reputation can lead to cooperation in a repeated game. The author uses an example from Pakistan to show how reputation can be a disciplinarian of zakat collection organizations.FindingsZakat solves both the free-rider problem in ordinary charity and the coordination problem between members in a large group. The free-rider problem is solved by changing the very framework of giving and the coordination problem between Muslims around the globe disappears because the rates and details of levying zakat are centrally created based on divine revelation.Originality/valueThis paper presents an important topic as it addresses one of the most popular giving practices in Muslim societies, called zakat. It also provides a framework in examining the meaning and function of zakat in Muslim societies.
