CONNECTION BETWEEN TEACHER’S SELF-MONITORING AND FORMATION OF NEW SKILLS

The article is devoted to the topical issue of the formation of pedagogical skills, namely, the role of self-monitoring in the formation and development of English teaching skills. The purpose of the study is to describe the current state of the use by English teachers in our country of a self-monitoring tool to improve teaching skills. In the process of work, the history of the issue in Kazakhstan and in the world practice was studied. This made it possible to formulate relevant questions for the questionnaire, which allowed describing to a certain extent the picture of the use of self-monitoring by English teachers in our society. The survey was conducted anonymously among English teachers at various educational institutions using the Google Form. In order to conduct a sociological survey, analyze the data obtained, describe the results and formulate the conclusions of the study, there were used statistical and comparative analyzes, synthesis and classification of information. The Role of Self-Monitoring and Motivation on Discretionary Advice: Evidence From a Field Study

Despite the pivotal role that self-monitoring plays in a multitude of social exchange situations and the preference of high self-monitors to look good in the eyes of others, relatively little is known about the role of self-monitoring on discretionary advice tie formation. This paper addresses tie formation choices relative to one’s opportunity seeking triggers. Based on the embeddedness literature and self-monitoring theory we develop and empirically test two hypotheses on the interrelation between self-monitoring (trait), motivation (trigger) and discretionary advice seeking (action). Drawing on data collected at a global pharmaceutical company, and based on a quantitative analysis using dyad-level regression models with multiway clustered observations, our findings suggest high self-monitors preferentially reach out to dissimilar others in advice seeking. We find intrinsic motivation to mitigate this effect amongst high self-monitors such that enjoyability positively stimulates self-monitoring ability. Extrinsic motivation, in turn, moderates the positive effect of self-monitoring on the formation of new ties such that external rewards positively stimulate self-monitoring sensitivity. Our findings nuance the notion that high self-monitors are more likely to engage in advice seeking activity than low self-monitors, suggesting one’s motivational preference to moderate this relation as trigger towards actual action. We conclude with discussing the implications of these findings for the study of social exchange processes in an intra-organizational and innovation aspiring context.

Emotional Labor in Knowledge-Based Service Relationships: The Roles of Self-Monitoring and Display Rule Perceptions.

Focusing on knowledge-based service relationships, this study examined knowledge-based service workers’ (i.e., school teachers) emotional labor process and the consequential outcomes for their well-being. The study also examined the roles of two antecedents, namely, teachers’ perceptions of display rules and self-monitoring tendencies. A sample of 1,656 school teachers participated in the study. The results showed that self-monitoring generally had stronger, though maladaptive, effects than display rule perceptions on individuals’ use of emotional labor strategies (ELS) (i.e., surface acting and deep acting) and well-being (i.e., anxiety, depression, contentment, and enthusiasm). Both self-monitoring and display rule perceptions were positively related to two ELS. There were relatively stronger relationships between self-monitoring and surface acting, and between display rule perceptions and deep acting. Surface acting was positively related to anxiety and depression and negatively related to contentment and enthusiasm. Deep acting was positively related to anxiety, contentment, and enthusiasm. The examination of indirect effects showed that self-monitoring was positively related to anxiety and depression and negatively related to enthusiasm and contentment. Display rule perceptions were weakly, but positively, related to anxiety and depression. These results suggest that self-monitoring may be less beneficial than previously thought. Knowledge-based service workers’ display rule perceptions and deep acting may not necessarily be harmful to their well-being, but reflect their role identification and commitment. Theoretical contributions and practical suggestions of this study were discussed.

Priorities of self-monitoring of blood glucose in a treatment of diabetes mellitus

Aim. To describe a role of self-monitoring of glycemia in a treatment of diabetes mellitus (DM) and in a prevention of vascular complications of DM. Materials and methods. Data of 57 scientific sources from Russian and foreign literature published within 2005-2017 are considered. Results and conclusions. DM is a chronic disease associated with a development of micro- and macrovascular complications and to prevent them is an important task of modern medicine. In patients with DM an incidence of cardiovascular diseases is 2-3 times higher compared with the general population. Hyperglycemia is among the major damaging factors for the cardiovascular system. Clinical studies have clearly demonstrated that programs of therapeutic management of diabetic patients which include regular self-monitoring of glycemia lead to a better reduction of glycated hemoglobin levels compared to programs without self-monitoring as well as they help many patients to avoid late complications. СКГ rate is correlated with glycated hemoglobin levels. Regular self-monitoring allows you to avoid sudden and dangerous fluctuations in glycemia, including hypoglycemia, which contribute to high cardiovascular risk. The use of self-monitoring of glycemia in combination with structured patient education is associated with improving the quality of life of patients with DM. Current view on self-monitoring implies a certain frequency of blood glucose systematic measurement (varies depending on the type of glucose-lowering therapy and the degree of diabetes compensation) and is an important reference point used by both the doctor and the patient to assess a treatment outcome and to correct it if necessary. An availability of modern glucometers and skills of their correct and regular use turn a patient into an active and valuable participant in a management of DM. Achieving and maintaining the target glycemia levels depends largely on an accuracy of the glucometer since measurement results provide the basis for changing a glucose-lowering therapy if necessary. From the physician's point of view, the most important criterion for selecting a glucometer is compliance with the accuracy standards, and from the patient’s point of view this is convenience and ease of use. Thanks to improving technologies that increases an accuracy of blood glucose measurements, the procedure for self-monitoring of glycemia is simplified, which contributes to glucose-lowering therapy effectiveness and treatment compliance.

The Role of Self-Monitoring and Academic Effort in Students’ Career Adaptability and Job Search Self-Efficacy

This article examines the relationship between career adaptability, self-monitoring, academic effort, and job search self-efficacy among university students. Guided by the career construction and self-monitoring theories, we propose that self-monitoring mediates the relationship between career adaptability and job search self-efficacy. Furthermore, we hypothesize that the indirect relationship is stronger for those with high academic effort. We test our proposed model using two samples (Sample 1 = 340, Sample 2 = 547) of university students from Thailand. Results confirm our hypothesized relationships and suggest that career adaptability is positively associated with job search self-efficacy above and beyond the effects of gender. Moderated mediation analyses revealed that the conditional indirect effect of career adaptability in predicting job search self-efficacy via self-monitoring is stronger for students with high as opposed to low levels of academic effort. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

Public or private products? The impact of cause-related marketing and product conspicuity on consumer response on social networking sites

ABSTRACTThis study examined the effectiveness of cause-related marketing (CRM) and product conspicuity on social networking sites (SNSs). In addition, the moderating roles of self-monitoring were investigated. A 2 (CRM message: presence vs. absence) × 2 (Product type: conspicuous vs. inconspicuous) experimental design was employed. Results showed that CRM messages led to more favorable responses than non-CRM messages in the context of SNSs. In addition, the more conspicuous a product, the more effective a CRM message was. The moderating effect of self-monitoring was found in term of attitude toward the ad. Implications and future research were discussed.

Experiences of Self-Monitoring in Self-Directed Weight Loss and Weight Loss Maintenance: Systematic Review of Qualitative Studies.

The experience and role of self-monitoring in self-directed weight loss attempts may be distinctly different from that within formal interventions, and has yet to be fully explored. We systematically reviewed qualitative studies to examine experiences of self-monitoring as an aid to self-directed weight loss. Thematic synthesis was used to construct descriptive and analytical themes from the available data. In all, 22 studies (681 participants) were included, in which the uses of self-monitoring ranged from an aid to increase adherence to a tool for facilitating analysis. Self-monitoring also influenced and was influenced by self-perception and emotions. Feelings of shame were linked with abandonment of efforts. Findings highlight the centrality of interpretation of self-monitored data, the implications this interpretation has on sense of self, and the impact of broader discourses. Explicitly framing self-monitoring as a positive tool with which to aid analysis may encourage helpful use of this technique.

A Study on Consumption Value of University Students in SPA Brand - The Moderating Effects of Self-Monitoring

This study focuses on investigating the relationship between the factors that may have a great influence on purchasing clothing of SPA brand. The structural equation of AMOS 20.0 was used for hypothesis testing and the sample was 294 respondents. The results of the empirical analysis are as follows. First, hedonic value and utilitarian value have a positive effect on consumer innovativeness. Utilitarian value has a little more influence on consumer innovativeness than hedonic value. Second, consumer innovativeness has a positive effect on word of mouth. Third, hedonic value and utilitarian value have a positive effect on word of mouth. Hedonic value has more influence on word- of-mouth than utilitarian value. Fourth, the moderating effect of self-monitoring is significant. Consumer value, consumer innovation, and word of mouth were found to be influenced differently by the high and low self-monitoring groups. Therefore, in order to improve the word of mouth of the SPA apparel brand, the consumption value should be strengthened. And as the role of self-monitoring has been confirmed, the managers need to find ways to use this part strategically.

The Antecedents of Innovative Work Behavior: The Roles of Self-Monitoring

In this study, the authors examined why employees engage in innovative behavior even though innovation is a risky behavior. Employees tend to engage in innovative behavior since they expect positive image gains. Besides, employees tend to avoid innovative behavior because it forfeits their image inside organization (expected image risks). Furthermore, the willingness to engage in innovative behavior depends on individual differences. Therefore, the authors tried to examine the role of individual differences, drawing from self-monitoring theory. The surprising findings were the quality of relationship between employees and their peers did not affect employee image risk and self-monitoring did not moderate the relationship between expected image gain and innovative work behavior.

Effect of self-monitoring of blood glucose on glycaemic outcome among type 2 diabetic patients

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder which leads to complications especially when not properly managed. The role of self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) in type 2 diabetic patients using oral hypoglycaemic agents has been a source of controversy.
 
 Objective: The objective was to study the effect of SMBG on glycaemic outcome among type 2 diabetics in a primary care setting.
 
 Methodology: A randomised control study was conducted between March 2013 and November 2013 at the General Outpatient Clinic of the Family Medicine Department (FMD) in Lagos State University Teaching hospital. A total of 120 diabetic patients were randomised into intervention and control groups; 107 patients (55 in the intervention and 52 in the control group) completed the study. Intention-to-treat analysis was done. Chi-square, Students t- and paired t-test were used to determine variables significantly associated with SMBG.
 
 Results: More than three-quarters (77.5%) of the participants were aware of SMBG prior to commencement of the study. Both the SMBG (8.7% vs. 7.2%; p-value < 0.001) and non-SMBG (8.7% vs 7.7%; p-value < 0.001) groups had a significant improvement in HbA1c at the end of the study. Similarly there was a significant improvement in FBG among both groups (SMBG 153 mg/dl vs. 123 mg/dl; p-value < 0.001 and non-SMBG (158 mg/dl vs. 137 mg/dl; p-value 0.022). The HbA1c at the end of the study was 7.2% for the SMBG vs 7.7% for the non-SMBG group with no statistical difference (p-value 0.174).
 
 Conclusion: The use of SMBG among type 2 DM patients did not result in better glycaemic control compared with patients who did not practise SMBG. It could be due to close follow-up and education of both groups.

Navigating difficult conversations: the role of self-monitoring and reflection-in-action.

Clinicians draw upon experiential knowledge to manoeuvre difficult conversations, using tacit knowledge that is difficult to explicitly teach. Instead, learners are taught to communicate through role-play and checklists, both of which are approaches that may fail during moments of clinical complexity. We know that difficult conversations may provoke anxiety in learners, but we know little about how they learn to navigate them. Without a deeper understanding, we may fail to equip learners with the skills to manoeuvre these conversations in practice. Using constructivist grounded theory, we applied the sensitising concepts of self-monitoring and reflection-in-action both to explore the process in which trainees engage to navigate difficult conversations and to expand understanding about these theories. We situated our research in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), in which difficult conversations are ubiquitous. Fifteen resident and fellow trainees drew rich pictures about difficult conversations, and shared their drawings and experiences during semi-structured interviews. Interview transcripts were analysed using constant comparative analysis. Participants described how they responded when checklist approaches became ineffective during moments of unexpected uncertainty and complexity. For participants, these indeterminate zones of practice triggered a process of seeing families differently and then pausing to understand problems that arose with the checklist-based approach. Throughout this process, learners actively observed others' communication approaches, negotiated their roles within difficult conversations, and abandoned the checklist to engage differently with families. Our findings suggest links between the theories of self-monitoring and reflection-in-action, and describe the engagement of both processes in the context of NICU conversations. Self-monitoring may lead to the realisation of an indeterminate zone of practice, after which trainees may respond through reflection-in-action. We recognise that training programmes may need to teach a checklist-based approach as a starting point. We suggest that trainees also be given purposeful opportunities and support to depart from checklists in order to compassionately and flexibly navigate difficult conversations with families.

Roles of self-monitoring, fashion involvement and technology readiness in an individual’s propensity to use mobile shopping

PurposeThis paper aims to investigate the relationships between self-monitoring, fashion involvement and technology readiness in the mobile shopping context. Although mobile shopping is still a novel activity in Turkish economical and social spheres, it has the potential to become an important driver of B2C electronic commerce in Turkey. Many Turkish firms have already extended their multichannel strategies by integrating a mobile channel into their pre-existing on-line and off-line channels. However, customers should be ready to actually embrace mobile commerce for the success of these strategies.Design/methodology/approachTo test the proposed research hypotheses, a survey was administrated online to 284 volunteer undergraduate students, who were potential users of mobile shopping channel. The measurement items were developed by adapting and modifying the previously validated 13-item, self-monitoring, 16-item technology readiness index 2.0 and 5-item fashion involvement scales.FindingsResults from a partial least squares analysis showed that the ability to modify self-presentation has a significant moderating influence on fashion involvement and technology readiness relationships. However, the moderating effect of sensitivity to the expressive behaviours of others for the same relationship was found to be insignificant. Further, fashion involvement appeared to have significant and direct influences on both technology readiness and attitudes towards mobile shopping. Finally, strong relationships between technology readiness, attitude and intentions to use mobile shopping were detected.Originality/valueThere has been little research effort conducted to examine the proposed relationships between the cited research variables in a non-Western country. Therefore, these study results yielded valuable insights for both theory and actual practice.

Ethical Decision-Making: The Role of Self-Monitoring, Future Orientation, and Social Networks

Abstract This study examines the influence of individual factors (self-monitoring, temporal orientation) on social networking, and their relationship with unethical decision-making. The study used surveys to measure the unethical intentions and social network data of 129 professionals. Data were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling. The findings provided evidence that individual factors influence the development of social networks and, along with self-monitoring, the likelihood of unethical decision-making. In particular, being in positions of lower network centrality increased individuals' risk of unethical intention. One explanation stems from the need for high situation control to reduce risk and ensure the success of an event, which only a closed network can provide. However, ethical low self-monitor women were also found to have low centrality, so social networks alone do not explain ethical decision-making. This research represents a step forward in our understanding of ethical decision-making through the adoption of multiple and simultaneous factors, proposing an integrated theory of individual and situational factors influencing unethical options.

A novel stepped-care approach to weight loss: The role of self-monitoring and health literacy in treatment outcomes

ObjectivesThe aims of the current study were twofold: 1) examine the effectiveness of an innovative three-step, stepped-care behavioral weight loss treatment, and 2) examine factors that contribute to poor weight loss outcomes and the need for more intensive treatment. MethodsThe total sample for the study consisted of 53 individuals (87% female) with MBMI=35.6, SDBMI=6.4. A three-step, stepped-care treatment approach was implemented over six months. Step 1 included the Diabetes Prevention Program manual adapted for self-administration augmented with monitoring technology shown to facilitate weight loss and participant accountability and engagement. Participants who were unsuccessful at achieving established weight loss goals received stepped-up treatments in 2-month increments beginning at month 2. The stepped progression included the addition of meal replacement at Step 2 and individual counseling concurrent with meal replacement at Step 3. ResultsUn-stepped and once stepped participants lost a clinically significant amount of weight (i.e., >5%), while twice stepped participants lost an insignificant amount of weight. Twice stepped participants were significantly lower in health literacy and self-monitoring frequency. ConclusionsIn this investigation, approximately 60% of the participants were able to lose a clinically significant amount of weight utilizing a minimally intensive intervention with little additional support. Regular self-monitoring and high health literacy proved to be significant correlates of success.

Conceptualizing Humor in Advertising: The Moderating Role of Self-Monitoring

This research paper explores the mediating role of attitude towards the advertisement and attitude towards the brand, and moderating role of self-monitoring in the relationships between perceived humor in the advertisement and purchase intention of the customer. Survey data was collected from 209 individuals after showing advertisements. Confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modeling, and macro developed by Preacher and Hays have been used to test moderation and mediation effect in the hypothesized model. A good fit between the data and tested model was observed. As predicted, purchase intention was positively related to perceived humor and full mediation effect has been found. The moderating role of self-monitoring has also been supported by the data. The findings are particularly salient for national and multinational media agencies in Pakistan as well in the other parts of the world.

Self-monitoring of blood glucose: Is it justified?

Despite the availability of robust evidence demonstrating that lowering glycaemic levels reduces the risks of diabetes-related complications, there has been little improvement in recent years in glycaemic control among individuals with diabetes in Europe and the US. Although widely used, there has been considerable controversy surrounding the role of self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) as a means of achieving glycaemic control. This has resulted in a re-consideration of the prescription of blood glucose strips especially in the current climate of health care cost-containment. Existing clinical recommendations lack specific guidance to patients and health professionals regarding SMBG practice intensity and frequency, particularly for those not treated with insulin. Previous studies of the association between SMBG and glycaemic control found often weak, and sometimes conflicting, evidence. More rigorous longitudinal studies are needed to examine the role of SMBG with special attention to the unique needs of patients using different diabetes treatments, within special clinical sub-populations, and during initiation of SMBG versus its ongoing use. Further understanding of the intensity and frequency of SMBG are also needed to capture variability in glycaemic patterns in order to facilitate more specific guideline development.

The role of self-monitoring in the maintenance of weight loss success

IntroductionSelf-monitoring has been shown to be a crucial part of initial weight loss success in behavioral interventions. However, little is known about the impact of self-monitoring during the period following initial treatment. MethodsThe current study examined the role of self-monitoring on weight loss during an initial 6-month intervention period (Phase 1) and a 12-month extended care period (Phase 2) in a group of 167 obese women (M±SD: BMI=37.0±5.1kg/m2, age=59.9±6.2years) enrolled in a behavioral weight loss program. ResultsCluster analysis identified three groups of participants with low, moderate, and high rates of weight loss success during Phase 1 and Phase 2. A one-way ANOVA revealed no significant differences in self-monitoring frequency between groups during Phase 1 (p=.645), but significant differences between all three groups during Phase 2 (p=.001). High success participants completed the most self-monitoring records, followed by the moderate group. The low success group completed the least number of records. Furthermore, self-monitoring during Phase 2 significantly mediated the relationship between extended-care session attendance and percent weight change during that time (95% CI [−.004, −.001], p<.001). ConclusionThese results highlight the importance of continuing self-monitoring after the initial phase of treatment to maintain lost weight.
