A Bibliometric Literature Review on Trends in the Internationalization of Higher Education

In recent years, the internationalization of higher education has become a critical theme, reflecting global interconnectedness and the increasing mobility of students and academics. This study aims to identify and analyze trends in internationalization research from 2015 to 2024. Utilizing a bibliometric analysis of 9,180 articles and 44,000 keywords from Web of Science and Scopus databases, the research synthesizes developments in nine key fields over the past decade. Methods include data cleaning, keyword determination, and the use of Excel for data processing and analysis. The results reveal significant progress in understanding the complexities of internationalization, such as student mobility, societal and cultural integration, educational methods, and quality assurance. The study highlights the accelerated role of digital technology due to the COVID-19 pandemic and emerging national security issues. Conclusions offer new theoretical and practical insights into the role of internationalization in higher education outcomes and predict future trends. The findings have significant implications for policy-making, institutional strategies, and future research directions. This research contributes to the literature by providing a comprehensive analysis of past trends and suggesting directions for future studies, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts from educational institutions, governments, and international organizations. Emphasis is placed on inclusivity and sustainability, with a call for innovative strategies to address emerging challenges and leverage new opportunities in the field of higher education internationalization.

English as a medium of instruction as part of the internationalization strategy at the University of Novi Sad

ABSTRACT University of Novi Sad (UNS) is strongly oriented towards internationalization, which entails the use of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI). This process is defined by language education policy at the macro level (national legislation) and by university policies and strategies at the meso level (university documents). However, so far there have been no studies that focus on the connections between Serbian education policy regarding EMI and how it is put into practice. For that reason I conducted semi-structured interviews with 21 content area lecturers from six faculties at UNS in order to discover how clearly content area lecturers see and perceive their role in internationalization pertaining to EMI, as well as the ways language education policy is implemented at the meso level in terms of training lecturers for EMI and providing support for teaching content courses in English. Finally, I look at how language education policy is realized in the classroom to determine to what extent lecturers rely on EMI pedagogy hoping that the comparison of all three levels of language education policy will uncover weak points and provide a basis for practical solutions that will eventually lead to more detailed and data-driven language education policy concerning EMI.

Muhammadiyah Goes International? Challenges and Opportunities

The idea of Muhammadiyah internationalization emerged as a response to the phenomenon of globalization, where Muhammadiyah tried to ensure that its da'wah movement was in line with the conditions of the times. This approach also includes global social issues such as the fate of workers, gender inequality, nuclear issues, and the environment. Muhammadiyah has a high commitment to the values of Pancasila and tries to contribute to achieving Indonesia's national ideals as stated in the Preamble to the 1945 Constitution. In the international context, Muhammadiyah not only plays a role as an Islamic movement but also as a socio-Islamic movement that tries to respond to various global issues. This article discusses how Muhammadiyah tries to develop the concept of peaceful Islamic da'wah amidst the complexity of the international world. Furthermore, it explains how Muhammadiyah's role in international relations involves active participation in conflict resolution, peacebuilding, and humanitarian activities in various countries. Muhammadiyah's internationalization strategy is explained through programs such as sending its best cadres abroad, establishing schools and charitable efforts in various countries, and participating in international forums. The author also discusses the concept of Muhammadiyah internationalization in three dimensions, namely ideas, roles, and movements. The idea of internationalization involves global socialization of the character of the Muhammadiyah movement and teachings. The role of internationalization includes increasing the role of Muhammadiyah in international forums, such as humanitarian missions, peace, and social activities. Meanwhile, the internationalization of the movement aims to make Muhammadiyah a model of Islamic practice that can be adopted globally. Furthermore, this article describes how Muhammadiyah, as an Islamic movement in Indonesia, is actively involved in the dynamics of the international world to encourage the transformation of the role of religions in overcoming global problems. Through internationalization, Muhammadiyah seeks to be part of a global movement that brings enlightenment, promotes Islam as a religion of peace, and contributes to the development of world civilization.

Analysis of the Role of Internationalization of Vocational Education in Enhancing Students' Global Competitiveness

In the context of globalization, the internationalization of vocational education has become an important way to enhance students' global competitiveness. This paper analyzes the definition and connotation of the internationalization of vocational education, its global development history, and the current situation in China. It explores the specific paths through which the internationalization of vocational education can enhance students' global competitiveness, including international curriculum design, international exchanges and cooperation, the internationalization of faculty teams, and the utilization of international educational resources. The paper summarizes the issues encountered during the implementation of vocational education internationalization and proposes corresponding improvement suggestions and future development trends. The research shows that the internationalization of vocational education can significantly enhance students' vocational skills, cross-cultural communication abilities, and international perspectives

Sustainability Reporting and Corporate Performance: The Moderating Role of Corporate Internationalization

This study aims to investigate the relationship between sustainability reporting and corporate performance moderated by the internationalization level of the firms. The sample for this empirical study is collected from the Financial Times Stock Exchange (FTSE)100 firms listed on Bursa Malaysia for a period of nine years from 2011 to 2019. We examine the sustainability reporting based on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standard with the G4 guideline, in which a content analysis method has been employed to obtain the Sustainability Reporting Index (SRI). The moderating variable for this study is the internationalization level, which is proxied by foreign sales generated. The findings demonstrate that sustainability reporting disclosure has no effect on corporate performance. However, internationalization improves corporate performance but serves no moderation role in the relationship between sustainability reporting and corporate performance. We conclude that there is no evidence to substantiate the claim that companies that disclose more in their sustainability reporting perform better, and this may be because Malaysian corporations are still new to non-financial reporting. We believe that although sustainability reporting is costly, sustainability reporting is able to enhance the reputation of firms in the international market. Sequentially, a highly internationalized firm with more sustainability reporting disclosures may bring wealth to the company in the long run.

Furthermore, the study reveals the moderating role of internationalization, emphasizing the strategic management of knowledge and engagement with diverse stakeholders as pivotal factors in enhancing the positive influence of BDA on environmental performance. These findings offer valuable insights for organizations leveraging data analytics to address environmental challenges in the global business landscape.

Furthermore, the paper discusses the role of internationalization, technology integration, and global mobility in reshaping higher education curricula and management strategies. Key themes explored include the need for interdisciplinary and culturally responsive curricula, the promotion of global citizenship, and the adoption of innovative teaching and learning methodologies to meet the demands of a globalized world. How can virtual and augmented reality facilitate international business?

AbstractWhile extensive research has explored the internet's role in internationalization, there is limited understanding of how augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) contribute. Our objective is to address and fill this gap by investigating the roles of AR and VR in international expansion of services and cultural products. The paper addresses facilitators and barriers for the use of these technologies in international business. It argues that advancements in information and communication technologies have played a pivotal role in fostering the integration of AR and VR into global business operations. The study examines the role of these technologies in inward internationalization, particularly in the tourism sector The article also delves into the disintermediation effects of AR and VR compared to Internet‐based platforms, emphasizing their potential to outperform traditional e‐commerce websites. Additionally, the research explores how AR and VR stimulate the internationalization of cultural products, such as concerts and visual art, overcoming geographical constraints. AR and VR technologies are currently in use by a variety of entities, including national tourism authorities, destination management organizations (DMOs), and service providers in the travel and hospitality industries, such as airlines and hotels. They are also employed by producers of cultural products, such as concerts and visual art. The ongoing advancements in these technologies are expected to broaden their existing applications.

The role of the state in shaping the internationalization of firms in the twenty-first century

The year 2020, with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent crises, highlighted the significance of state intervention in shaping firm competitiveness. However, unprecedented government support for businesses has left us puzzled about the state’s role in firm internationalization, especially in emerging markets and the Global South, where government involvement has been accompanied by democratic backsliding and rising authoritarianism. Our Special Issue moves the current debate forward by exploring how the state’s changing role affects firm internationalization. The objective of this editorial is twofold: stimulating theory development by scrutinizing state intervention in emerging markets in recent decades and introducing the Special Issue articles. Contributions investigate how governments support the internationalization of their domestic businesses by focusing on firms’ institutional embeddedness and the impact of institutions as both resources and constraints to their internationalization. By linking the discourse on state capitalism with business internationalization, our empirical studies advance research on political economy and the state’s role in innovative ways, reflecting on recent geopolitical developments. Our introductory article situates the Special Issue papers in the state capitalism and firm internationalization literatures and discusses their implications for future research.

Globalization, a multifaceted phenomenon, has revolutionized higher education, driving a shift from traditional to diversified pedagogical models. However, this transformative journey presents a myriad of challenges and opportunities for HEIs. The study underscores the pivotal role of internationalization and cultural inclusivity in reshaping the educational landscape. Challenges faced by HEIs in adapting to globalized learning environments, reluctance to embrace cultural diversity, and limitations in fostering cross-cultural competencies among students emerge as focal points. This research contributes a novel perspective by delineating the barriers hindering the internationalization of educational settings, offering insights into strategies for fostering inclusive learning environments. Emphasizing the significance of embracing cultural diversity, the study recommends recalibrating institutional policies and practices. These findings resonate beyond academic discourse, influencing practical implications for real-world educational settings. In conclusion, this research emphasizes the imperative for HEIs to adapt and innovate in response to globalization, fostering inclusive learning environments to equip students with the requisite skills for navigating a diverse, interconnected world. Leveraging these insights, institutions can contribute to societal transformation and the holistic development of students, shaping a future aligned with global competencies and enriched cultural understanding.

Neoliberalism, internationalization, Japanese exclusionism: the integration experiences of international academics at Japanese universities

ABSTRACT The study examines the role of neoliberalism, institutional internationalization, and Japanese exclusionism in shaping the academic environment of Japanese higher education institutions by exploring international academics’ integration experiences at Japanese universities. Specifically international academics’ perceptions of the academic environment, and their practical behaviors while integrating into Japanese universities were investigated via semi-structured interviews with 40 international faculty with various backgrounds. Employing Nvivo12, the interview data was managed based on a six-step thematic analysis procedure. Drawing on the integration experiences of international academics, the data analysis indicates that international academics perceived various subtle and overt constraints while integrating into Japanese universities, and they tend to seek private solutions to navigate their professional and social lives at Japanese universities. Moreover, although no differences in their practical behaviors were found, the study acknowledges the perceptual differences of the participants by suggesting that international academics, particularly those in the Humanities, those without previous experience in Japan, those who possess propaganda value due to their international appearance, and those who are not from countries that use Chinese characters, were more likely to perceive an integration deficit at Japanese universities. The research findings are indicative of the complex academic environment of Japanese HEIs caused by neoliberalism, institutional internationalization, and Japanese exclusionism, which is competitive, exclusionary, and pragmatic. Both theoretical and practical implications for policymakers, researchers, and university administrators are provided.

Internationalization and zero leverage

Despite growing attention on the role of internationalization in capital structure and the increasing adoption of zero-leverage policies by multinationals (MNC), no study examines the effect of internationalization on zero leverage. Using data from the United Kingdom (UK), we present the first empirical evidence of a positive and significant relationship that increases in the level of internationalization both statistically and economically. We find that the motivation for zero leverage differs between MNC and domestic firms (DOM). Whilst the major driving factor for MNC is the maintenance of financial flexibility, financial constraints motivate DOM.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Disclosure, Internationalization and Tax Avoidance: Evidence from Indonesia

This research aims to explore the association between corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure, internationalization and tax avoidance of manufacturing companies in Indonesia during (2013-2015). The three-year-period was chosen to represent the last three years before the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines, which are used to measure the CSR disclosure, transitioned to GRI Standards, which are more structured, flexible and dynamic. Under the GRI guidelines regime, we expected to document the associations among the three main variables before significant impacts of several events on reporting, such as the transition to new standards, the launch of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the implementation of tax amnesty in Indonesia in 2016. Empirical analyses were conducted on a sample comprising 153 firm-year observations. Relationships between CSR disclosure and tax avoidance, internationalization and tax avoidance and the moderating role of internationalization were examined using multiple regression analyses, whereas t-test analysis was used to find any significant differences in each association. The results indicated that CSR disclosure positively affects tax avoidance. Meanwhile, internationalization has no effect on tax avoidance and has no moderating role in the positive relationship between CSR disclosure and tax avoidance. This study is among the early research studies which provide evidence from Indonesia, as one of the G20 countries, investigating the associations among CSR disclosure, internationalization and tax avoidance, as well as the moderating role of internationalization, which has not been given much attention in the literature.

Entrepreneurs’ Social Ties and International Digital Entrepreneurial Marketing in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise Internationalization

Digitalization has enabled entrepreneurs to adopt digital tools to create opportunities and reach customers in international markets. Yet, the understanding of international digital entrepreneurial marketing in the global marketplace is limited. Drawing on social network theory, the authors investigate how entrepreneurs’ social ties and firms’ international digital entrepreneurial marketing influence small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) internationalization. Based on multiple case study methodology, the results suggest that entrepreneurs’ bonding and bridging ties facilitate different dimensions of international digital entrepreneurial marketing. That further enhances the intensity and geographic scope of SME internationalization. SME internationalization also reinforces entrepreneurs’ accumulation of social ties. This study contributes to international marketing research by developing the dimensions of the international digital entrepreneurial marketing concept and exploring its important role in SME internationalization.

International visibility of Armenian domestic journals: the role of scientific diaspora

Abstract Purpose Nearly 122 scientific journals are currently being published in Armenia—of which only six are indexed by WoS and/or Scopus databases. The majority of the national journals are published in the Armenian language, solely possessing abstracts written in English, although there are also English-language and multi-language journals with articles not only in Armenian but also in other foreign languages. The aim of this article is to study the visibility of the (non-indexed) national Armenian journals in the WoS database through citation analysis. In consideration of the existence of a relevant Armenian “diaspora” in the world, this article also attempts to estimate its impact in terms of citation statistics. Design/methodology/approach For this end, we have identified citations to the national/domestic Armenian journals in the WoS database in comparison with the share of citations received from “diaspora” researchers (researchers of Armenian origin born in foreign countries and those originally from Armenia who have emigrated to foreign countries). Findings Among the 116 Armenian domestic journals analyzed (not indexed by WoS), only 47 were found to be cited in WoS. Of these journals, almost 12% are citations by “diaspora” researchers, most of which concern Social Science and Humanities journals. Research limitations Although the surnames of Armenians end with -i(y)an, sometimes, the Diaspora Armenians, surnames are changed or modified or they are not ending with -i(y)an, in this case we may fail to identify them. Practical implications This study can help to build new, more deep and comprehensive relations with scientific diasporas. Originality/value This study offers a new understanding of multifaced research collaboration with scientific diasporas and their role in internationalization of domestic journals.

Sustainability practices and student satisfaction in business schools: the role of notoriety and internationalization

Purpose: The objective of this work is to determine whether the effort of business schools in terms of sustainability policies improves student satisfaction through boosting the internationalization of the institution and its notoriety.Design/methodology/approach: The sample considered in this study consisted of 272 Spanish business school graduates. The data was collected via online survey during the first quarter of 2020. To validate the hypotheses and the model, structural equations modelling was performed using robust method.Findings: A commitment of the business schools to sustainability not only has an ethical component but also improves their positioning, leading to greater competitiveness.Practical implications: The results obtained point to sustainability practices facilitating entry processes involving joint agreements among business schools and leading to clear accreditations and/or sustainability policies.Originality/value: The present research focuses on those variables included in the scarcely investigated external factors that should be considered to maintain high satisfaction among business school students.

Anticipating Sino-UK fintech networks and the changing geographies of money as infrastructure

This paper examines Sino-UK financial relations in the fintech sector. Through an empirical focus on fintech payments systems, the analysis locates fintech within broader research on the internationalisation of Chinese finance. Conceptually, the paper responds to calls for more attention to be paid to state actors in fintech development. By examining the relationship between the UK and China in fintech, as part of the UK's wider role in Chinese financial internationalisation, I argue that such a focus on the state needs to be expanded beyond the current focus on domestic policy to include wider questions regarding how fintech sits alongside overseas and international policy concerns. I suggest that one productive way of doing this is to understand fintech as a monetary infrastructure. In so doing, the paper argues that fintech needs to be understood as much as a monetary geography as it is a financial geography.

Direct Versus Indirect Exports in Post-Communist Europe and Central Asia: The Role of Innovation Activities and Internationalization

ABSTRACT The distinction between direct and indirect exporting has been increasingly stressed in recent advances in the theory and empirics of international trade. In particular, the prior literature suggests a hierarchy of exporting decisions determined by firm productivity. We use firm-level data from a wide group of post-communist countries to investigate which characteristics of firms can explain their choice of export modes. We find that firm internationalization, firm size, and per worker revenue are linked to exporting decisions in a way consistent with Lu’s et al. model, while the relationship with innovation performance is more complex.
