The Geography of Art International Scientific Conference has a long history. Geography of Art began in 1994 and was originally conceived as a purely publishing project. In 2009, the first conference was held under the auspices of the Likhachev Russian Research Institute for Cultural and Natural Heritage and its director Yuri A. Vedenin. The topics at the conferences are traditionally very diverse, but the “protagonist” of all discussions, debates, and subsequent collections is invariably space, in all its guises, and its interaction with culture. The original subjects such as the geography of art schools and traditions and the placement of artifacts on the earth’s surface have over time been supplemented by conceptual questions of the construction of spatial images in painting, literature, and cinema. Over the past few years, the conference has been organized by the Institute of Scientific Information on Social Sciences of RAS, the Russian Academy of Arts, GITR Film and Television School, and the Russian State University for the Humanities. In 2021, for the first time, the conference was arranged in a hybrid format: some sessions were held in person at the Russian Academy of Arts and GITR, while some discussions were convened online. This made it possible to significantly expand the geography of our participants. An important topic was brought up—the possibility of generating images of space and transforming the spatial picture of the world by different types of art, including screen art, creating new meanings of places and regions. A separate section was devoted to the concepts of space and the corresponding images in digital media, cinematography and photography. The section discussed the peculiarities of national cinematography from the point of view of forming the country’s image, which can play a significant role in intercultural communication, and regional images created with the help of photography and IT-technology as an attractor in the formation of recreational flows. Among other things, the conference covered the specifics of space perception in the era of digitalization, the creation of representations, and spectacularity. A separate topic was the construction of narrative topoi within the framework of different versions of screen adaptations of the same work. All discussions complemented each other in creating a three-dimensional picture of spatial images by means of digital and screen arts, generating a modified reality supplemented by photo and film visualizations.

Concept of cultural identity and its role in intercultural communication

The effectiveness of intercultural communication will be significant depends on the recognition of the existence of cultural differences, in recognition of the absolute value of cultural diversity, recognition of the right other cultures for existence, preservation and development. Recognition of that the fact that there are other cultures alongside your culture, having their own picture of the world, their values, norms of behavior, and communication, different from your culture is a prerequisite for effective intercultural communication. Intercultural communication advocates as one of the elements of the formation and transmission of cultural values and is a necessary condition for the interaction of carriers of various cultures.

The Translation of Cultural Specific Items in the Persian Translation of Disney's Animated Classic <i>Cinderella</i>

Cinderella is a folk tale representing a component of unfair subjugation and victorious reward. There are various versions of Cinderella throughout the world. The main character is a young girl living in abandoned conditions that are changed to incredible fortune. Walt Disney produced <i><i>Cinderella</i></i> (1950), an animated musical fantasy film, based on the fairy tale of the same name by Charles Perrault. Translation has played a significant role in intercultural communication, and the translation of cultural specific items, the distinctive qualities of a particular culture, is the most important part of the process of translation. Culture-specific items are notions that are specific for a specific culture which may refer to realms such as plants, animals, food, accommodation, vacation, politics, and religion. The purpose of this paper was to compare and contrast the cultural specific items in English version of Walt Disney’s <i><i>Cinderella</i></i> (1950) and their translation into Farsi in the light of Peter Newmark’s suggestions about the translation of CSIs. The study gains significance as the findings can shed more light upon the translation procedures of cultural specific items in Farsi translation of Walt Disney’s <i><i>Cinderella</i></i> (1950) in the light of theories of Peter Newmark (1988). The findings of the research paper show that the translator of <i><i>Cinderella</i></i> has applied the procedure of addition, deletion, cultural equivalent and paraphrase more than the other procedures.

Ethnic Stereotypes in The Minds of Russian And Tatar Youth

An important role in intercultural communication is played by ethnic stereotypes - stable ideas about the moral, mental, physical qualities inherent among representatives of various ethnic communities. An urgent task is the study of Tatar and Russian people stereotypes living in the same territory. The material for Tatar and Russian autostereotypes and heterostereotype description was the data collected as a result of a free-associative experiment among the students (17-25 years old) of higher educational institutions of Kazan in 2016-2017. The results of the study show that Russian linguistic consciousness in the Republic of Tatarstan has a higher level of tolerance towards the Tatar people. The “other” ethnic environment influences the structure and content of heterostereotypes in the first place due to the greater immersion in the culture and history of other people. The results of the work are intended to help in solving the problems of intercultural communication related to education and upbringing in a multi-ethnic environment.

Competencia intercultural y fallo pragmático: el caso de los cumplidos y los desacuerdos en inglés como lengua extranjera

Mastering a foreign language involves more than having a good linguistic competence. In fact, one of the most difficult aspects is acquiring the necessary pragmatic competence (Hymes, 1972) to perform a specific speech act suitably according to context and the interlocutors’ expectations and beliefs (Yates, 2010; Piller, 2017). In the L1, such pragmatic knowledge is both learnt and acquired throughout the individual’s ‘acculturation process’ (cf. Schumann, 1986). However, it might be a source of misunderstandings and stereotype reinforcement when using L2, especially in the case of intercultural situations, where interlocutors may bring different ‘pragmatic expectations’ to the encounter and where pragmatic failure is more likely to take place. In this paper, I shall focus on the notion of pragmatic failure (Thomas, 1983) and the related concept of dissonance (Zamborlin, 2007) and how they might play a crucial role in intercultural communication. More specifically, two speech acts will be analyzed: compliments (and their responses) and disa-greements. The reason for selecting these two acts is that they might be regarded as extremes in terms of the interlocutors’ positive face. Thus, compliments might be employed as a way to build up positive face whilst disagreement inflicts a clear threat to the interlocutors’ positive face. Precisely because of their “extreme” cha-racter, both speech acts may lead to pragmatic failure in intercultural encounters. As language teachers, one of our crucial roles is hence help our students to develop both their pragmatic competence in L2 but, even more importantly, to raise their meta-pragmatic awareness

The role of intercultural communication in study foreign languages

It welcomes research into intercultural communication, particularly where it explores the importance of linguistic aspects; and research into language, especially the learning of foreign languages, where it explores the importance of intercultural dimensions.

Theoretical Constructs and Practical Strategies for Intercultural Communication

Delving into English language education in Vietnam, this theory-oriented article aims to generate a new debate on critical cultural awareness (CCA) in light of increasing literature on intercultural communication competence (ICC), thus offering practical implementations to academic agents. Once ICC is strongly considered indispensable within communication, CCA can strengthen the power of sociocultural and psychological relationships. This study specifies the role of intercultural communication, aiming to develop Vietnamese learners to reach beyond abstract linguistic features towards language awareness by engaging in cultural and societal plurality. Seemingly, they need use language that advocate the enactment of change, fostering their abilities in their civic life. Coupled with that, they are obliged for learning the power of positive attitudes in terms of intercultural engagement, such as sympathy towards and acceptance of differences. Critical cultural awareness as a contribution to intercultural communication drives two primary aspects, namely social and psychological dimensions. In addition to dragging learners out of traditionally perceived skills related to native-like competences, the framework application expands potential goals and instructional steps that cover learning based on learner voice reflected upon privilege and power. Apparently, it is relevant in response to learning environment driven by social mechanisms which focus on citizenship, expecting that they learn and possess knowledge for certain purposes relating to career goals and social needs. Comprehensively, this study will outline the short examination of language education in Vietnam as a way to understand existing hindrances to be resolved. It anchored this analysis in a theoretical paradigm: critical cultural awareness, which is then critically embedded to involve social and psychological pedagogies. This enables to shift learners’ desire and willingness that hone their learning skills which influences academic success and communicative adaptability. Pedagogical implications are also suggested.

PECULIARITIES OF WORD FORMATION OF KINSHIP TERMINOLOGY IN THE CHINESE AND KAZAKH LANGUAGES

The purpose of this article is to describe and identify the peculiarities of word formation of kinship terms in the Chinese and Kazakh languages. Research methodology – this scientific study used the basic methods of comparative linguistics, including descriptive, apostolically, as well as structural method. The relevance of the article is the system of word formation of terms of kinship in the Chinese and Kazakh languages, similarities and differences of this system. This article is devoted to the peculiarities of word formation of kinship terms in the Chinese and Kazakh languages. Kinship is a social concept, moreover, a historical-ethnic one, since its development is conditioned not only by universal laws, but also by the way of life, culture, and morality of this or that ethno-collective. But the terms of kinship - these are the words that denote the family relationships be- tween people. They are not only part of the vocabulary of the language, but also the spiritual vocabulary of each language. After all, regardless of the difference between languages and a nation, family ties were always the property of society. Kinship terms are distinguished by their rich history, systemic structure, and also an indispensable role in intercultural communication. Among the Turkic languages, the Kazakh language is considered one of the richest in terms of the number of kinship terms. Chinese is one of the richest languages in the world in terms of kinship terms. This scientific article by the method of concur- rent analysis studies the peculiarities of the word formation of kinship terms in the Chinese and Kazakh languages. Previously, the formation of kinship terms in these languages has not been studied, which in turn indicates the relevance of this topic in the field of Sinology. Formulaic Language in Second Language Teaching—A Case Study of Situation-Bound Utterances in China’s EFL Textbooks

As one kind of formulaic expressions, situation-bound utterances (SBUs) are “highly conventionalized, prefabricated pragmatic units whose occurrences are tied to standardized communicative situations” [1]. SBUs have also played a special role in intercultural communication, because misunderstandings will arise due to a lack of knowledge of using them appropriately. However, little importance has been attached to SBUs in China’s EFL teaching. This study first collects and classifies the SBUs in a being-used EFL textbook, then compares the identified expressions with recurrent patterns in existing corpora. Pedagogical implications will be given at last through providing a teaching worth list of SBUs as a reference for EFL teaching.

The proper name of a person among the Turkic peoples has a special meaning. There is a belief that the name directly affects the future of a person. Therefore, choosing a name for a newborn baby is a big responsibility for the family. Each onymic unit in the language is a reflection of the national consciousness. Onymic units play an important role in intercultural communication. The meaning of anthroponyms in one language may be different in another related language. This article defines the meaning of the name ‘Saikal’ in the Turkic languages, identifies and compares the anthroponymic and appellative meanings underlying this name. The peculiarities of the use, meaning and origin of the anthroponym «Saykal» in other Turkic languages are differentiated. On the basis of modern and historical linguistic data, the transformation of the word «Saikal» into an anthroponym and its use in positive and negative meanings is determined. The word ‘Saikal’ in the modern Kazakh language has a negative meaning. In the Kyrgyz language, the name Saikal is one of the most common names for girls, because Saikal is a heroine who was a fighting girlfriend of Manas Batyr, who was revered by the Kyrgyz people. In the literary heritage of the Kyrgyz people, the image of a woman named Saikal is a symbol of an intelligent, prudent, brave and courageous woman. Various historical and cultural factors may influence the use of the same word in Turkic languages with opposite meanings. Comparing the use of anthroponyms of one language in other related languages, it is possible to to restore new data on the system of common Turkic anthroponyms, their history and the function of individual words as anthroponyms. The data presented in the article will make it possible to understand the peculiarities of the appellative vocabulary underlying anthroponyms, and can also be used in the etymological dictionary of personal names of the Turkic peoples.

Comparison of Body Language in Cross-cultural Communication

Body language plays an important role in intercultural communication. However, there are more obstacles caused by the differences of language and culture. In intercultural communication, the most effective way to deal with the obstacles is to master the meanings and characteristics of body language. This thesis makes a comparison of characteristics and applications of body language in different cultures by comparison method, acquiring the approaches of reducing barriers in intercultural communication. Its aim is to help people communicate effectively in cross-cultural communication and avoid misunderstandings.

Peculiarities of Ethnic Stereotypes Usage in English Political Discourse

This paper aims to highlight ethnic stereotyping in the English-language mass media political discourse, which is an actual issue since the scope of media texts in English prevails in the global information space, which cannot but affect the viewpoint of an average English speaking reader. According to the cognitive linguistic approach, the is considered to be an element of the cultural and linguistic world view and an integral part of reality categorization mechanism. Ethnic stereotypes are very important in the process of intercultural communication since they can increase its effectiveness and eliminate interethnic problems or they can act vice versa. So and hetero-stereotypes play a significant role in intercultural communication. This fact underlines the relevance of ethnic studies. The notions of auto- stereotype and hetero-stereotype are considered in the article, using the examples of English-language political media text headlines. Special attention is given to the headlines of English-language media texts about Russia. Basic features of the modern Russia, formed by the English-language media, are defined by the analyzed political media text material.

The Role of Intercultural Communication in the Process of Learning Foreign Languages

This article with a general methodological orientation was to present the specific nature of forming foreign competence in teaching foreign languages to the students of humanitarian specialties of higher educational institutions. To this end, the results of teaching a foreign language based on the cultural concept was presented. This approach in the language mastering system dictates a teacher to select materials for study in accordance with socio-cultural, linguistic-cultural, and intercultural information relevant to professional interests of students of a particular specialty. The definition of not so much linguistic but the personal traits of the trainee as an area of proximal development also contribute to the formation of a specialist adapted and capable of implementing their professional competences regardless of geographical barriers. The novelty of the proposed approach is to integrate the earliest forms of language mastering with the extracurricular form of work at university. It includes the work on attracting students to communicate with native speakers or with representatives of a different culture through their unifying language in natural communication situations (meetings, scientific debates, and student exchange programs). A purposeful implementation of this approach also allows developing professional, social, and intercultural competencies of students in their inseparable trinity.

Exploring Cross-Cultural Communication Courses in Media Literacy: Case Study of Using the University General Education Program “Citizen Journalism and Actions”

Values are at the center of culture, the core of intercultural communication, and the chief element affecting communication between nations. Currently, educating students regarding appropriate cognitive attitudes and behaviors in intercultural communication, the basis for the acquisition of intercultural citizenship, has become a challenge for educators. This paper presents a case study of an intercultural communication curriculum where students participate in a new community and thereby understand the differences between reality and media representation of foreign immigrants. At the end of class, the concept of &amp;ldquo;access media&amp;rdquo; will be presented to train students on producing community videos that voice the reality they have experienced through the curriculum processes to which they have been exposed. This involves training students to take social action against media manipulation of stereotypical images of foreign immigrants. This case study demonstrates how an intercultural communication process of learning transforms students. The data include an analysis and evaluation of classroom observations, student and teacher diaries, questionnaires, and focus groups to explain how students&amp;rsquo; intercultural communication competence was developed and led to their acquiring intercultural citizenship qualities that include &amp;ldquo;action in the community,&amp;rdquo; in this case publishing their own community video. The article concludes by explaining how intercultural theory plays a significant role in intercultural communication and relationship formation, and provides a guide to assist teachers in Taiwan develop pedagogy of literacy for general education.

In the environment with rapid changing, the digital content of cultural and creative industries plays a unique and essential role in intercultural communication and become the key to promote economy and life quality. This study uses analytic network process method to analyse the content developer of APP services sector, and tries to find the major market positioning factors of APP services. The structure of this research follows the five dimensions and 17 factors mapped with the critical factors of the digital content industry. The questionnaire with the reliability be answered by the experts in the semi-structured way. The results show that educating personnel in digital content industry should focus on technology development and creativity. The key factors in digital content industry are creativity, education of personnel and development of platform, and development of APP, among which the major market positioning is for the entertainment products.

Language Use and Communication in an International Management Setting: The Power to Misrecognize

Linguistic and cultural differences have often been conceived as the main obstacles when communicating in international business settings. While acknowledging that such differences are of great importance, this article goes one step further in investigating the role of intercultural communication in international management settings. Hence, it is our argument that more focus should be directed at group processes within the organization. Based on a short illustrative case of a Danish subsidiary in China, it is argued that the differences in language use and communication style can be strategically used in categorization to divide power between different groups. This is important for understanding the implications of intercultural communication in international settings and how to deal with it accordingly.

Witi Ihimaera’s &lt;em&gt;The Whale Rider&lt;/em&gt; in Slovene, Dutch, and German Translation

The translation of Ma ori literature into european languages constitutes a relatively recent phenomenon, principally because the publication of Maori books in english has increased since the Maori Renaissance in the 1970s (Keown; Auerbach). As recent statistical evaluations of bibliographies have shown, until the year 2007, 126 Zealand books had been published in european translation, with German, French, and dutch counting among the most frequent continental languages of translation (Haag, new Zealand Books 82). the first translations of Maori literature appeared in the 1950s. However, this was sporadic, with only a single book, peter Henry Buck's Vikings of the Sunrise (1938), having been issued in five continental languages. the proliferation of foreign-language publications of Maori texts started in the 1970s and was not only characterized by the general augmentation of translated books but also by diversification of translated genres and authors: the most frequently translated genres include the novel (48%), the anthology (18%), and juvenile literature (8%). today, Witi ihimaera is the most frequently translated author, with his novels making up 22% of the entire corpus of european translations of this literature. ihimaera's books are followed in quantitative terms by translations of those of similarly established authors: patricia Grace, Keri Hulme, and Alan duff (Haag, new Zealand Books 88-92).Despite this obvious success, studies of the european marketing of this literature have identified problematic strategies of book production that have construed translated Maori literature rather as a cultural than a literary product, with european ideas of authenticity and traditionalism often employed as the marketing strategy (Haag, indigenous Literature). this marketing strategy can be discerned on the dustcovers that tend to foster the origin of the books, particularly by showing images of tattooed faces, stone axes, and warfare (Haag, indigenous Literature 57-59). such images draw on stereotypical ideas of primitivism that construe cultures as childlike and prone to savageness. By emphasizing such stereotypes, the publishers try to gain an audience through sensationalist portrayals of Maori culture as ferocious and raw. While scholarship has criticized such marketing, there has been little research into the interest in Maori literature in europe (Knudsen; Moura-Kocoglu). no study has focused so far on the processes of translation and asked whether they have replicated the stereotypes employed by the marketing of this literature.This question is particularly relevant since translations play an important role in intercultural communication. By exposing readers to a foreign and sometimes little-known literature, a distant culture, a different perspective, or shared experiences, they can broaden readers' awareness and understanding of shared values and contribute to their openness to people from different cultures. According to Lawrence Venuti (The Translator's Invisibility), in recognizing the ability of translation to bring different cultures together and enable readers to study common themes and problems, the translator and the publisher must be aware that translation is not merely a matter of linguistics, and that establishing linguistic equivalence, an important criterion in judging translation until the late 1980s (Catford; nida and taber), is not enough. Given that words derive their meaning from a specific cultural context, it seems entirely appropriate that translation theory and practice have, in recent years, turned to both the source and target cultures as something to be studied before the translation of a work can proceed (dingwaney). Rather than evaluating the faithfulness of the translation, the discipline of translation studies has focused on the way in which a translated text functions against the background of the target language and culture. …

The Role of Intercultural Communication in Cyberterrorism

This article analyzes the role of intercultural communication in cyberterrorism. Cyberspace is a common site of meeting and interaction between cyberterrorists from multiple cultural backgrounds. It is also a place where cyberterrorists have to face law enforcement agents. As a result, intercultural clashes sometimes occur. This justifies the necessity for better understanding intercultural communication in Internet-mediated situations. Although there have been published pieces on hackers' culture, this article breaks new ground partly because no literature review has produced work on the role of intercultural communication in cyberterrorism.
